The perfect machine for slides, negatives and old pictures.......2007-12-22
I almost waited too long for this -- by the time I wanted to buy it, HP had discontinued it! Thank heaven Amazon had it; it does just what I want it to do -- prints from negatives and slides, scans, copies, faxes. It's perfect for working with photographic elements. I don't need large amounts of copies; I don't need to fax often. This is available for what I want to do with a minimum of fuss. I don't think there is another product out there that does just what this one does!

Change my five star rating to a two star rating........2007-11-15
The first unit did not work except for the first hour. Getting a replacement unit was very difficult. The replacement unit does not send or receive FAX. Must return original unit within three days or my debit card will be charged for a second unit - and after that I will not be allowed to return it for credit. It came Saturday and today is Sunday. FAX or no FAX working on replacement unit, I have to return the original defective unit tomorrow.
The C7180 is very slow and awkward to use but results are good and maybe I'll get used to the protocols.
The instruction book says that if I use DSL and connect my laptop to the desktop by using an Integrated wireless WLAN 802.11 network setup then speed and reliability will improve. Maybe it will even FAX? Wish I had the money to try this.
Please reduce my original 5 star rating to a 2 star rating.
Great printer, but disappointed about the wireless.......2007-11-03
I purchased this printer two weeks ago and have been very happy with the performance and quality of the prints produced. In addition, the scanner, copying and fax functions work flawlessly. That said, there has been a serious problem (for me).
I purchased this printer over another brand, mainly due to the built-in wireless networking offered. However, I've run into a problem with the wireless radio losing it's connection after the printer goes into sleep mode. When you bring the printer out of sleep mode, it never reconnects. Running diagnostics reveals that the wireless radio is listed as "Not Working", even though it says it is in the menu. Turning off the radio and turning it back on again has no effect. The work-around is to turn off the printer and turn it back on again.
Two chat sessions with HP technical support showed me how to extend the timeout period to 12 hours. This is helpful, but when I pressed the technician as to what I should do after the 12 hour timeout (say after waking up in the morning and wanting to print something), he told me to "turn off the printer and turn it back on again." He said that is basically all he could do for me. This is highly unacceptable and has ruined my purchase experience. I doubt I'll by another HP printer and next time opt for a Canon instead.
Big issues with Windows Vista.......2007-10-20
The software will not install and HP downloads do not work as well.
I have to use an HP 7800 series driver to get it to work. However, a lot of the functionality of the printer is disabled.
Find a printer that was released after Microsoft Vista!
