Customer Reviews:
Well Built!!!.......2007-12-23
Been doing a lot of mortgage calculations on this item and I must say have moved a lot of properties because of it! Turbo charged for sure!
Nice, overall, but PLEASE HP bring back the quality!.......2007-12-22
There's been many a good review on this calculator previously on Amazon so I won't delve too deeply into what has already been said. I will, however, off a few opinions that are gleaned fromm over two decades worth of using financial calculators, so I hope someone finds this interesting.
First, there are only three 'true' manufacturers of financial calculators: HP, Texas Instruments and Calculated Industries. Well, four if you count everyone else. But, HP & TI own the student and financial market. TI's calculators use the Algebraic Operating System (AOS) and HP uses RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) and some (the HP-12c platinum reviewed here) offer both. It's a matter of personal choice; RPN is more fluid once you learn it, but AOS is easier and flows math as you were taught in school. That said, once you master RPN, you won't go back to AOS.
Secondly, and this is my big beef with ALL calculator manufacturers. Handheld calculators need TACTILE feedback; meaning, notably, that you have to both KNOW when you press a button and, also, KNOW that when you do, it registers and doesn't do something funky (i.e. NOT register or DOUBLE register). This is beyond important and frequently overlooked by engineering types designing these calculators. Face it, a financial calculator isn't mainstream and it isn't used for insignificant calculations; they're used by investment bankers, accountants, analysts, etc. and these people have to be comfortable in the fact that the buttons 'work' and work everytime.
No one, not a single manufacturer, understood this except HP. And HP understood it to the point that their products were in a class by themselves. That was until about five years ago. Then, HP moved calculator production to China and the first products, notably the HP-12C Platinum and the HP 17BII+ suffered horribly in the hands of users because the tactile response simply was awful. Read the Amazon reviews on these products to get a feel for what I'm talking about here. I have a 17BII+ (2006 production) and call attest that if you don't watch it, it will frequently not register a number. That's useless in a financial calculator.
Fortunately, HP in this latest 25th Anniversary Edition apparently listed to consumers and got 'most-of-it' right on this model. Certainly better than the HP-12C Platinum and arguably better than it's more expensive sibling, the 17BII+.
Here, in no particular order is my Good/Bad list of features:
Good
Follows typical 12C keyboard layout and convention. The 12C is THE standard in financial calculators and HP wisely left the form factor alone.
Faster than the original 12 and Platinum editions that followed. By HP's literature, almost 6x faster, but the big deal here is that it is faster than the horrible Platinum 1.0 version which suffered in TVM calculations.
Re-designed battery door. If you used an original 12C, you'll like the honking big door on this version.
VERY sweet rear labeling of functions; the metal decal attached on the back really goes a long way towards helping one with the keystroke/feature set of this calculator.
Runtime is just insanely long, which is useful since it uses non-standard batteries (CR2032's--better buy 'em now; you WON'T find them when you need them!)
Bad
Tactile response. Yes, it's better than the 17BII+ (much!) but it still isn't in the same league as the older US or Singapore produced calculators of the 1980's and 1990's. Arguably better than a 'cheapie' calculator but not what I would call 'good' by $50+ product standards. Honestly, I cannot fathom why HP won't belly to the bar on this and just spend $5.00 more and put a better keyboard on their high-end calculators. I will say this keyboard is the BEST keyboard HP has in their calculator product line, PERIOD. But that's not as big a compliment as it sounds.
Build-quality. Good. Not great, good. The thing still feels flimsy compared to the older products, plain and simple.
Case. Know what? On the web, that leather case looks very cool. In real life, it's three times bigger than the calculator and twice as hard to carry. A simple leather slip case would be nice.
Other odds and ends.
HP's manual for this baby is honestly worth the price of the calculator; maybe more. One thing I'll have to give HP is at least in this day and age of PDFs and web searches, they still give you an honest-to-goodness manual and a good one to boot. Kudos to them for that one!
As it stands, this HP 12C 25th Anniversary Edition stands as my pick of the absolute best available financial calculator on the market today. I say that because it's better built than it's bigger brother (17BII+) and offers RPN and programming and a familiar keyboard and layout.
However, I wish HP senior staff would puruse these reviews and take heart to producing a calculator with 1980's build quality and 2007 microprocessor guts. I mean honestly, I have a Blackberry with a 2GB memory card; and this thing has 28K? It runs on the 6502 processor; does that ring a bell with anyone over 40? It was the processor in the original Apple II!!!! Why not:
>Build the case out of higher quality plastic? Maybe ABS.
>Use a modern processor.
>Give us a removeable memory stick.
>Give it a USB port for programming.
That CANNOT be that big of a deal to incorporate and HP would OWN the calculator market again.
That's my .02 cents worth on the HP-12C, 25th Anniversary Edition.
Cadillac of Financial Calculators!.......2007-12-03
I absolutely love this calculator. It's easy to use and best of all, it allows algebraic inputation. I had a great experience w/ Amazon on this purchase. The original calculator I received was defective, simply a fluke. I contacted Amazon and received a brand new replacement within 2 days!...this more than 2 months after I bought the item. I was overjoyed at how easy it was.
Satisfied customer.......2007-12-02
While in the process of getting ready to take my CFA exam, I came across the dilemma of choosing a calculator: the TI BAII Plus or the HP 12C. Having no previous background on either option, I did all the research online and was initially leaning over to the TI BA II Plus (or Plus professional), mainly because of the big buttons and bigger screen. However, I was then peer pressured by my colleagues to go for the HP 12C, as I was told that every business man in Wall street has this calculator, and I will look like the 'new kid on the block' if I were to get a TI. Needlesstosay, I opted for the HP 12C Platinum edition and am an extremely satisfied customer! In the beginning, I took a couple of hours to go over the functions, and it is very easy to use once you get the hang of it. Infact, there are 2 modes, and if you use the 'algebraic' mode, it is just like using any other calculator. It has all the functions I could ever want and apparantly is much faster at finding results than the HP 12C original. If you're going to take the CFA exam, look no further. The HP 12C Platinum is the ideal selection.
Excellent device.......2007-11-16
This is an initial review, been using a few weeks, good device so far. Instead of repeating everything said in other reviews, will just point out a few things:
1. The case is actually really nice. Yes, too big for your pocket like others have suggested, but frankly I find the calculator alone too big for my pockets. At 1/2" thick at its thickest, it's not something I want to carry around in my shirt or pants pocket anyway. Would rather have the nice, leather, magnetically closing case. Only improvement would be to make a case like this that lets you use the calc without having to remove it. Can't use 12c in this case, have to remove it.
2. For hp 12c noobs like me, use [f][2] to change from the default decimal configuration of 1 to 2 (or however many decimals you want to see). If you get a result with more decimal precision than the 12c is set to show (as in the examples on pg 25 of the manual), it will automatically round the result instead of changing the precision. And info on how to manually change the precision was difficult to find in the otherwise superb manual.
Otherwise, quality device (never used the original 12c so can't compare), love the horizontal layout, all calcs should be this way.

Customer Reviews:
aokay.......2007-12-21
This cash register is well designed for a small use service like mine- It could be a little faster, but all in all, it is perfect for our use
No copy receipt function.......2007-12-15
and won't print on duplicate paper. You can set it to print receipts OR print a sales journal but not both. If you need to record individual sales AND give out customer receipts, then this otherwise nicely streamlined and easy to use cash register is not for you.
The printer doesn't press hard enough for use with duplicate paper rolls and there is no way to program it to print another copy of the receipt. Too bad, this simple feature would make it perfect. It does print a very basic summary report of each department's sales totals with total cash/credit/check sales when prompted. But just the totals.
So head's up if you need a copy receipt or duplicate printing function, this model won't do.
Works well.......2007-12-07
The cash register works as expected. I take it to trade/craft shows and it works out just fine.
Nice (Hard to program).......2007-08-14
This works well once you take about 30 mins to program it. Overall I would reccommend this to anybody.
Great Item for small business.......2007-07-18
I purchased this item for a family member who has a small business. What caught my attention was the size of the cash register and the price.

its a good product.......2007-09-02
what can i say? i taking a math class and i need a calculator that can do a lot of things. so i friend refer me to this product and i am happy with it.
thank you.
Great little calculator for on the go........2007-05-12
Great little calculator, compact and easy to use with all the scientific functions that I need...plus, it does not need batteries!
Good calculator........2007-03-22
This is a fine calculator, and inexpensive. The only shortcoming I see is that it doesn't have a '1,000' separator. This makes large numbers hard to see quickly.
As advertised.......2007-03-09
I had an old scientific calculator from Texas Instruments, and it was terrific. I used it since sophmore year in high school. When I thought I lost it, I purchased the Casio FX-260. It works just as described. Reasonably priced and stright forward. My old TI had an easier memory function, causing a learning curve on the Casio. Wish the memory function was like the TI. No other problems.
button presses not registering!!.......2007-03-06
i bought this for an exam with restrictions about what kind of calculator I could have ... in my prep work I noticed a few times that button presses weren't registering on the screen (might also have explained some of my answers ;-() ... but as luck would have it in the exam it was happening OFTEN ... I was on the alert for it though so it might have always been the case. My fingers were feeling the "click" though ;-( Anyway ... a calculator that can't be relied upon to register button presses is USELESS!
Amazon.com Review
The imposing EL-1192BL calculator is all business. From the no-nonsense layout and extra keys designed to meet the needs of businesses to the integrated printer and large, clear display, this is one calculator that doesn't mess around.
It feels strange calling a calculator ergonomic, but that's the only word that describes the design of the EL-1192BL. The large keys look and feel like those found on a computer keyboard, with beveled edges and slightly concave tops that virtually eliminate input errors. The 12-digit display isn't the standard black and gray LCD calculator users are used to; instead, its bright green illuminated numbers are legible in any lighting condition. It's a touch that anyone who spends hours in front of a calculator each day will appreciate. The printer unit uses two colors (black for positives, red for negatives), and it is very noisy, but produces crisp output. It's an impact device, meaning it uses standard paper rolls instead of the more expensive thermal paper, and a three-line-per-second print speed means it should keep up well with all but the most nimble-fingered users.
As for features, there's plenty of stuff here that business users will like. Dedicated tax keys let us establish a standard tax rate and apply it to our figures with a single keystroke. A correction key let us delete the last number we entered to erase mistakes, and a grand-total key made it easy to total the results from multiple calculations. A switch at the top let us easily select one of six decimal display modes, including floating, fixed (3, 2, 1, and 0), and an add mode. Another switch controls whether decimals are rounded up or down. If you can live with the clatter from the printer and have the space on your desk to accommodate such a large calculator, the EL-1192BL is a powerful adding machine and calculator that will suit businesses of all types. --T. Byrl Baker
Pros:
- Key design is very useful
- Dedicated keys simplify tax computations
- Excellent display

Very nice calculator.......2007-12-17
Our business requires we use a calculator, and this is the first one I have bought. It works great, simple and the tape is a standard tape size so I can get it at my local grocery store. Very nice.
SHARP is sharp........2007-12-13
This calculator is of the highest quality and and rates a superior performance grade for a desktop unit. The print is extremely legible and remains so on the paper even in a closed book (ledger) environment. I highly recommend this product!
Great Home Office Calculator.......2006-06-19
I run a home business and keeping books is a critical part of my daily work. I needed a calculator that had large numbers, larger keys and printed off tape.
Scrounging around Amazon.com I came across several models that would have done the job well. I have had Sharp calculators in my office at work, and know this to be a reliable brand.
I came across this particular model, and having done some on line research, Amazon had the cheapest price of anyone on this model.
I have to say that I have not been disappointed in this purchase. It is a very reliable calculator, the paper tape with 2 color printout is very readable, and the numbers are large, well lit and the keys fit my big fat fingers. It has some great features like percentage and sales tax that you can place the sales tax % in memory. There are other tax functions as well.
This calculator does not take batteries, and that's fine cause it's a waste of money to put batteries in one of these.
This is a good calculator and one that I do recommend for the home office.

Customer Reviews:
Great, with one caveat.......2007-11-15
The construction master is a great product, hands down. The only problem with this "desktop" version is that the keypad is a little funky.
If they raised the keys just a little higher and made them easier to press, it would be fantastic. Unfortunately, you have to press kind of hard to get the buttons to respond. When you're trying to do lots of fast calculations, it gets frustrating, because you have to be very deliberate about each and every keystroke.
Otherwise, great product, great time saver.
Construction Master Desk Top is the Best!.......2007-03-22
I now have 2 of these calculators, plus two hand held models. As a construction superintendent for a major contractor in Wisconsin, I would be absolutely lost without them! As usual Amazon carries what we need, and delivers when we need it.
Poweful tool for the scene shop.......2006-03-08
Building scenery for the theater we are always under a time & acuracy crunch. The Construction master pro DT helps us to handle both foot and Inch manipulations and construction detailing. The rise & run & diagonal calculations are a timesaver when we are dealing with raked platforming or out of true flats. The compound miter key has already saved me hours of fussing on oddball scenic units. The ability to store risers heights in the stair calculations allows us to easily determine stair details by using our stock, but not building code compliant stairs. The calculators flexibility is one of its greatest assetts and one of its great drawbacks as well. I wish that there was a help system in the unit remind the user of how to use some of the more arcane controls. The included instruction book is great, but a book is not the fastest way when you need to use a function now that you last used months ago.
Construction Master Pro Desk Top.......2006-01-15
This Calculator was a Replacement for my son-in-law. It was a Request. He is a Contractor, and has been using the Construction Master Pro for years. It works Great for Him and is his Calculator of Choice.
Lost without it.......2005-05-02
This is the latest incarnation of a tool I've been using for a few years now. The more I use it, the more dependent I become. Provides quick, accurate answers to almost all shop problems & equations. The memory function is a little confusing at first, but practice makes perfect. Excellent tool, well worth the money. There's a pocket sized version available also, called the "Ultra Measure Master", also very handy.

I LOVE THIS CALCULATOR!.......2007-03-24
I've had this calculator for the longest time now... I bought the first one in middleschool and my two youngest brothers ended up borrowing it from me. It lasted me through my second year in college (math models class) and I just bought it again for pre-med stats class in college. It is a great calculator...its all you need for statistics without having to carry an expensive and heavy graphing calculator around. Make sure when you buy a Ti calculator that is is a solar or a battery calculator. you can see this by looking at the model #. example:
TI-30XIIB This model ends with a B so it is battery powered. S would be solar. Hope this helps!
Great Calculator.......2006-11-13
I got this calculator for my little sister and she loves it! It's got great functionality and the scrolling memory is very useful.
fine calculator.......2006-09-17
i'm taking the civil pe exam next month, and picked this calculator up as it's one of only 5 or so that you are allowed to bring. the calculator is fine and does everything you would want it to (short of the little programs that you may have gotten used to on your graphing calculator). to the reviewer from june 2005. what an idiot!!! the exponent button is the same "carrot" or up arrow that is on almost ALL calculators. 5 to the 25th power is 5 "UP" 25. and square roots aren't hard. if you have big long number as the person was saying, type square root, then ANS, to get the root of your last ANSWER. this guy is just a total retard. any normal person with about 5 minutes of playing around can figure out how to do Everything he or she needs on this calculator.
Calculator review.......2006-03-11
Product is fine portable calculator wehich efficeinty does calculations in math, trig, stat etc.
Written instructions are the poorest I have seen in 40 years using calculators and computers. Do you know of a real insturction manual? Harlan Rainey
Calculator dies after a short while.......2006-01-26
Bought this in late '04. Practically unused and sitting in its protective cover. I go to use it this semester and... nothing, it won't turn on. Open case and battery is good. Call TI, they tell me it is out of warranty and to have it serviced I will have to pay $7, +$4 shipping, +$5 return shipping. More than calculator is worth. I had an old TI-30 that lasted more than 5 years of heavy use. What happened to TI quality? I can't recommend this piece.

All you need in a desktop calculator.......2007-09-20
If you want a desktop calculator that's easy to use, has a large, bright display, a selectable two-color printer, and all the usual business features including date and time stamp capability, buy one of these inexpensive little jewels and do your monthly bill-paying in style.
A Practical Plethora Of Print-ulating Possibilities!.......2007-01-03
My life changed for the better on the day I added this machine to my desk. No longer do I have to tabulate the incoming checks for the office using an abacus! No longer to I have to scratch the list on a flat stone with a piece of charcoal! The 21st century has arrived, and it IS the Canon P170-DH Printing Calculator!!! Numbers are tabulated in no longer than it takes to hit the * key. The display shows my progress with a pleasant green glow. Big, easy-to-use keys hearken back to those giant learning calculators I used in elementary school, which gives a nice sense of nostalgia while using this product.
When I first opened the box, I thought, "Things are going to be different from now on." They certainly were. The Canon P170-DH Printing Calculator holds a place of honor next to my bright red Swingline stapler.
Summary: Calculator is adequate; does what you expect it to, just a wee bit noisy.
