Amazon.com Product Description

These days, virtually every new gadget that comes to market strives to be the latest and greatest "all-in-one" digital performer (cell phone/camera/music player/garage door opener. It's refreshing to know that there is still a company that continues to produce stand-alone products that are built with quality -- not quantity -- in mind. Boston Acoustics has taken its two decades of high-performance engineering and created an AM-FM clock radio that has few rivals. The Boston Acoustics Receptor Clock Radio is an AM/FM radio with alarm clock features that's been designed to deliver sound comparable to the finest radios ever made.

The Boston Acoustics Recepter Radio delivers high-fidelity AM/FM radio for home or office use. View details.

The Receptor offers 20 presets for your favorite AM/FM stations. View larger.

Boston Acoustic's stylish radio is small in size, but big on sound.
The Heart of the Receptor: BassTrac Technology
At the heart of the Receptor is Boston Acoustic's BassTrac technology, a proprietary Boston-designed circuit that tracks low frequencies and prevents audible amplifier distortion. Unlike conventional "limiters," BassTrac doesn't merely chop off the tops of the distortion-inducing signal peaks. Instead, it actually preserves the waveform's shape so the fidelity of the signal is maintained, while preventing distortion.

For those of us who can't explain the difference between AM and FM to a room full of first graders, this basically means that the Receptor is designed to give you all the bass without any of the distortion. The result is a full, pleasing broadcast at any volume for any type of music. In other words, the Receptor will give you a rich and smooth sound, whether you're cooking to fusion jazz or waking up to the traffic report.

Ideal for either home or office use, the Receptor features a high-sensitivity digital tuner that "locks in" distant AM and FM stations that other radios can't find. With its purpose-built Boston speaker driver, the radio is capable of receiving a wide range of frequencies and has a unique ability to pick up even the weakest of signals. With its precise digital tuning, stations are cleanly separated for maximum clarity.

An Ideal Bedside Companion
The Receptor weighs in at about four pounds and measures 7.625 x 4.25 x 6.125 inches (WxHxD) -- the ideal size for a bedside (or kitchen) table. The radio includes 20 presets for 20 stations, and the dual independent alarm clocks can be set to music, buzzer or both. Like any good clock radio, the Receptor includes a built-in snooze and sleep functions. And a battery back-up stores both the presets and the alarm settings during power outages, giving you the peace of mind that you'll never have to worry about getting to work on time.

What's so refreshing about the Receptor is that there is nothing ordinary about its functionality or design. Small enough to fit anywhere in the house, it's nevertheless powerful enough to create an exceptional presence in any room. And while it's technology is more advanced and complex than you'll find in most any other table-top radio, its controls are simple and straightforward. A wonderfully easy-to-read LCD display that indicates time, station, and alarms makes operation a breeze, and two large old-fashioned knobs (volume and tuning) are as easy to use as it gets without compromising on control.

5 out of 5 stars Great Clock Radio.......2007-12-26

This is a great radio, clock and alarm! I gave it to my 70 year-old mother for a birthday gift and she loves the rich, bass sound, the small footprint, digital tuning (with knobs) and wonderful reception. This would make a great gift for anyone!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent radio.......2007-12-21

Very nice radio. Good tone, picks up hard to get stations with no trouble. Glad I bought it, and the price was just right in comparison to Bose and Cambridge high end radios.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Clock Radio, Worth The Price!.......2007-12-19

I'm really enjoying my Boston Acoustics Clock Radio. Great sound from such a small unit. Bass and sound are very adequate. FM reception is fantastic with just the antenna wire that came with it, with a short wire hooked on to it. AM is good, but the Grundig g4000 does better on its internal antenna. I got me a Terk AM antenna that I use with the clock radio that really boasts reception. With the Terk it does slightly better than the Grundig. The display is just right in the dark in the dim mode. You can also set it to where it shows the clock even with the radio on.
Just press the display till you hear a beep. Very easy to set too. I also like the 60 minute snooze. I'd highly recomend this radio to anyone.

Boston Acoustics Receptor Clock Radio (Charcoal)

I needed a good radio for my wife to listen to at night. She specifically wanted better AM reception. We live on Cape Cod (MASS)and have difficulty hearing Boston stations, for instance.
The FM reception is great with just the little short wire antenna AM reception is better than the previous inexpensive clock radio. I even bought an external AM antennae recommended by Amazon (users) It helped some and as one user mentioned, it doesn't necessarily have to be connected to the radir, just put near it and the "dial" moved for best reception. Not perfect but OK. Strangely people in the midwest, the carolinas and Canada can get this station WBZ better than I can just accross Cape Cod Bay.
But back to the radio. It does have a rather bass tone to it but it is clear and has a rich sound. There are plenty of presets , and once set you can scroll through them, one to the next. There is also an Auxiliary setting and a imput for a minijack in the back. I have XM radio in my car so took advantage of getting an inexpensive small XM tuner (they had an Audiovoix one for $19 that I actually got for $6 - bought the home kit for $30 and connected it to the BA unit through the Aux connection. I had to go to Radio shack to get the correct male / male plug (about $8). BA sends you a plug that is miniplug to 2 RCA plugs which would not do what I needed. For a second subscription it is only $6.99/mo for the second set (car being the first).
My wife has regular AM/FM and 20 presets AND XM (170 channels and 10 more presets on the XM tuner) XM comes in clear as a bell on Cape Cod and the whole setup has moved to Florida for the winter and works well there as well. I hate to say this but the radio programing in parts of Florida is very poor. XM to the rescue 100% of the time down there. The radio is easy to use and program and has interesting features. Just read the instructions. We are 100% satisfied - a great product at a reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars GrannyV.......2007-12-12

I have purchased many clock radios over the years and they all had bad reception, poor quality sound and just didn't hold up.

So, when I ordered the "Boston Acoustics Receptor Clock Raido" I was very skeptical, but OHH! what a clock radio. It sounds better than my stereo. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Amazon.com Product Description

Realize the full potential of high-definition digital radio technology with the Boston Acoustics Receptor Radio HD, an AM/FM clock radio that delivers brilliant CD-quality sound. The next-generation tabletop device not only radically upgrades the performance of traditional analog AM/FM signals, but also receives digital broadcasts and their associated wireless data services over existing AM/FM radio bands. The result is spectacularly brilliant clarity, fidelity, and room-filling sound never before heard on any radio of any size.

Digital HD radio broadcasting represents a revolution in radio listening by ushering in a boundless array of entertainment and information possibilities. Across the country, AM and FM radio stations are upgrading to digital HD Radio broadcasting, which enhances both the sound and the programming options. Some stations are broadcasting data over traditional AM/FM bands, including song titles, artist info, weather and traffic updates, and more, while others are broadcasting digital "multicast" channels with alternative programming. The Receptor Radio HD sorts it all out to bring you your favorite current programming, the expanded listening choices, and the song and weather data--all without requiring a subscription.

The Recepter Radio HD's impressive audio performance stems from Boston Acoustics' years of experience in designing and manufacturing high-performance audio equipment. The key to the radio's topnotch sound is its Boston-designed wide-range driver, which is optimized specifically for the radio, and its digitally equalized amplifier outfitted with proprietary BassTrac circuitry for full, satisfying, distortion-free bass regardless of the volume level. The audio performance is coupled with the radio's AM/FM tuner and its 20 easy-to-access station presets. The digital technology even enhances the AM and FM bands' audio fidelity--AM sounds more like FM does today, while FM signals boast a CD-like quality. Best of all, the static, hiss, pops, and fades commonly found on today's radios are virtually eliminated, ensuring crystal-clear reception.

Adding to the radio's value are a host of other features that add to your convenience and enjoyment. The iPod/MP3 player port, for instance, invites you to share your favorite tunes over the Receptor Radio HD's high-quality stereo speakers. Meanwhile, the headphone jack lets you listen to digital HD radio privately so you don't disturb others. You can also adjust the tuning, volume, and station presets either manually or with the credit-card-sized remote control. Additional features include a sleep timer that lets you fall asleep to music; two independent alarms for waking to music, a beeper, or both; and a power backup that stores presets and alarm settings should a power failure occur.

The Receptor Radio HD measures 7.62 by 4.38 by 6.75 inches (W x H x D), while the included second speaker checks in at 4.38 by 4.38 by 6 inches. The entire system is also backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Sounds good, but stopped working after about 3 months........2007-12-26

Summary by a 25 year old tech geek: Don't get this radio unless you win it somehow, even then, just sell it, it isn't worth your sanity and time.

I got this radio as a present last year for Christmas. I was excited because of the HD stations out there. I wasn't disappointed in the HD, because I knew that HD for radios didn't mean High Definition, it means Hybrid Digital. So it means it can receive analog and digital signals. Its a slick marketing scheme with a few perks, so do your research before you buy anything electronic. That being said, You can really only recognize a quality difference on an AM HD station on any HD radio.

Anyways this radio in particular has never moved in the house since I received it, but it stopped turning on about 3 months after I got it. Since even the analog signal receiver side it is in the digital circuit, nothing works. The digital circuit is shoddy at best and is not intended to last long. Now its just a great big paper weight.

2 out of 5 stars Great Sound and Clock But Unreliable.......2007-11-29

Bought a Receptor at Radio Shack. Hooked it up and it sounded great. The radio came on in the morning - perfect. Shut it off for the day. Came home and the unit would not turn on again. Fussed with it for 30 minutes - nothing. Display was on and showed signal, volume, all the signs of radio life. But nothing came out of the speakers. I will return today for a replacement. But the three strikes policy will apply.

1 out of 5 stars disappointing purchase.......2007-10-21

I received the radio promptly but could not plug it in, because the power cord was missing. I rang up Amazon in hopes perhaps Amazon had the missing part, but no, I had to pack everything up and ship it back (try getting parking near the Alexandria UPS store. Just try). Could it be replaced, I asked. No, Amazon told me, Amazon isn't carrying this model any more. Talk about a lot of time and trouble wasted!

2 out of 5 stars What A Disappointment.......2007-09-20

Boston Acoustics Receptor HD Clock Radio (Platinum)
This radio does nothing well. It has trouble receiving local and HD stations, so that the sound goes in and out constantly. It has far too much bass (which cannot be adjusted)so that it is almost useless as a radio unless you are listening to something that is all about the bass line. And it doesn't always work - sometimes it turns itself off without warning (no, I am not setting it to sleep mode by accident), and loses the presets regularly. I highly recommend you stay away from this overpriced, very disappointing radio. I will certainly never buy another BA product after this experience.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Radio.......2007-09-14

I purchased a refurbished Boston Acoustics Receptor HD Radio from Beach Audio. It was defective when I received it. I notified Beach Audio, got a Return Authorization Number from them, sent it back and received a refund immediately. A reputable seller, in my opinion.
