Something to add about transferring media..........2007-12-27
I agree with all the positive reviews. I think this is a great player. I want to specifically address transferring media because I don't see alot of mention in the reviews. For transferring music, WMP 11 works awesome. If the music files are unprotected, they transfer lightning fast (about 1 to 1.5 seconds per song). If they are protected, they transfer a little bit slower but have no trouble playing (I transferred some songs I bought from Wal-Mart download service). It copies album art and all the tag info from WMP 11 with the files. For photos I personally did not think that WMP 11 did a good job getting the photos onto the player. It copies the files in the same folder hierarchy as they are on your system which may be a problem because for photos the player only recognizes files one (or two?) folders deep. It also does not resize the photos and many thumbnails did not show up on the player. For photos, I recommend downloading the "Sony Media Manager for Walkman 1.1" from the website. It works great and all your photos will be copied to the player in the correct format, with thumbnails. Sony Media Manager also works great for copying the music to the player, but I like using WMP 11 better for music since all my playlists, etc. are there. I have yet to successfully get any of my (old) videos to play on the player. They are mostly .mpg and I can't figure out how to convert them (or what format to convert them to [says .mp4 in manual]). I haven't tried very hard though because I don't care about videos on my Walkman. It would be kind of kool to figure out how to correctly convert my old videos so they would work though.
Amazing bass and price and quality. Better than ipods.......2007-12-25
Absolutly amazing I just got this on Christmas Day. I was Really amazed how many functions it had compared to the Ipod. After seeing and hearing this the ipods are junk unless you want alot of memory. Other than that this thing has a alot more technology but i think youve got the point after what it says on the top. Well it comes with 80 dollar headphones in case you didnt know and the bass and quality is just amazing. Its an unatural feeling when you think your whole head is shaking but its not. Another thing its nice really nice shiny not scratchable like the ipods. Also it has amazing battery 33 hours and its true it last me 2 weeks without charging it. Basiclly its get this than an ipod it will be worth you money and they wont jam like them too. I highly recommend.
Great Flash Player.......2007-12-25
I have had my new Sony NWZ-A818 for three weeks now and so
far I am pretty impressed. I had a Samsung YP-T9 4 gig, so
as far as I was concerned the Sony had some big shoes to fill.
For starters, the build quality. It really is a step above all
the competition. It is all metal, cool to the touch, and weighty
for such a small device. The screen is very detailed.
If you watch the included Spider Man 3 demo, you'll know
what I mean.
The sound quality really is special. I'm hearing songs properly
for the first time. There are lots of tweaks for EQ, including
two custom settings.
Caveats are few. There is no FM tuner(I don't care). The sound
doesn't get quite as loud as I would like on some songs, and the battery life is not approaching the 33-35 hours CNET got(probably because I have it maxed out constantly). Oh, and I am having
problems getting used to the cord hanging next to my neck, where it sticks sometimes while working out(probably a personal issue).
All in all, this is a nice improvement on the Samsung. I am very pleased.
It's Crazy good!!.......2007-12-15
The title says it all. Sony has always made great portable audio, with their full rich sound Sig. Now you can have your cake and eat it too, no more sonic stage!! Really, just like the other fine folks, I have owned many daps- cowon, samsung, apple, zune, iriver, creative, rio, meizu, toshiba, kenwood ect. ect. I just have to say this little unit is the best at reproducing full , detailed rich sound. It is incredible with shure e500's, the warmth and soundstage is second to none. The unit is easy to use, the screen is top notch, and the unit is dead sexy and built like a high-end piece of kit.
I also echo the awesome battery performance, and don't let the 5mw output fool you, this baby has enough power to drive some full size cans. I'm a musician too and are super picky about my audio, and I can't stress how good this little unit sounds. I actually had the japanese model "nw a808", but sold it to get the non sonic stage model. The Japanese unit had some extra settings like "on the go" playlisting and a "favorite" shuffle setting plus some other extras. I hope sony adds these to the a818 in a future firmware release.
Even on Head-Fi people are praising it's sound and that says alot, you have some hardcore users there :) One member said he was going to buy another a818 as back-up because he said he couldn't bear to live without it if he lost or broke his. Bottom line, BUY IT!! and sony please release some higher capacity models.
Just wanted to mention a couple of more things, I really like how the "door" on the usb port is spring loaded and snaps back in place to prevent dust and debris from entering the player- Nice! Also even though I am kind of a purest when it comes to sound enhancements, the ones on the a818 are pretty amazing and don't seem to add distortion or coloration to the audio signal. "DSEE" really seems to boost the highs on low bitrate mp3 files, and smooth them out.
"Clear stereo" also seems to make the seperation of channels more distinct, resulting in a wider soundstage, very subtle indeed, but nice. "Clear bass" does a fantastic job of boosting the very low end while bringing in no distortion to the bass, resulting in "feeling the low end " but also keeping a the detail. A fender jazz sounds like it should, and a rickenbacker sounds just like it should:) None of that mushyness you used to get with the old "mega bass"
Since I use high bitrate files, I don't use the dsee, but I do use the clear stereo and clear bass quite a bit. The 5 band eq is competent and more than you get on a zune or ipod :) I must say though even without eq you get the full range of the audio spectrum. There is no bass roll-off as there is in other players- ipod, cough cough. So you get a much fuller and "blended" sound not tinny or harsh.
There are many mediocre daps out there, thats why I think when a gem like this comes around so many people want to share their experiance (with some very detailed reviews!) with others. Music is a magical thing and it's great to have something so small, yet awesome to play it on.
One last thing, sony makes premium stuff usually with premium prices. The a818 is priced less than the inferior zune flash or ipod nano. If you take your music seriously or you just love awesome gadgets, then a purchase of the sony nw a818 is mandatory!!! peace out!
Very Pleased........2007-12-13
I really like this product. The other reviews are correct. The sound is amazing. I had an IPOD for 3 years. That was fine but I wanted to try another type of MP3 player. I don't use the earphones it came with because I had Sony earphones that I love. I find 8GB is more than enough for me. I listen to the same stuff over and over. :) And I am happy with the size. I can fit it in my pockets just fine or a tiny purse. I bought the clear case cause I have butterfingers. But the MP3 player seemed sturdy enough without it. But I don't want to take that chance. :) Actually, I am using it right now. It is extremely easy to use. I just drop my mp3s and go on my way. Since I had the Ipod, I had a wall adapter. I switch the IPod cord with the Sony cord plugged the USB end into the adapter. And there you go. Wall charger!!! The battery life is great. If I am running low, it could take an hour or so to fully charge using the wall adapter. I haven't used my computer to do a complete charge. It is great for my needs. Great sound, good size, its not too heavy with the clear case. Life is good. :)

Customer Reviews:
my first MP3 player.......2007-12-26
First I want to thank the several people who write reviews on the various products here at Amazon (and CNet.com).
I was initially going to go with the ipod Nano because it seemed to work well (my boss plays it in the operating room through the FM tuner). Then I liked the capabilities of the Sansa players. What sold me on this unit was the FM tuner and the sound quality based on the reviews I read here. So far I'm not disappointed. I don't like the fact I have to charge it through my computer and the ear phones could be better, hence the 4 stars.
I must say I tried to listen to this player at a chain store (whose second name rhymes with 'pity'. I was told by two sales associates that I couldn't listen to the various MP3 players they had on display and that their supervisor wouldn't like it at all! I was in too much shock to comment or laugh. I don't think I'll be buying from that store for anything.
M
THIS SOUNDS AWESOME!!!!.......2007-10-24
ok let me start off by saying i have bought i believe every mp3 player out there to try and i have had a 30gb ipod video for about 6 months now and have never been satisfied with the sound of any mp3 player ive tried they all sounded tunnelly not stereo enough missing something. so i figured "oh thats just how mp3s sound" I WAS WRONG! well i am 35 years old and have been listing and buying cds since i was 15 or so. and when i started listening to mp3 players i felt something was missing the punch to alot of songs i grew up with and loved was not there anymore the warmth was gone, the sound was weak and did not sound as good as cds on a cd player. so anyways for 6 months now i have been exclusively listening to an ipod at work and in the car (this thing sounds incredible in the car to) for 6 hours a night and ripped many different ways 192,256 and then i tried lossless to see what people are saying about that, and lossless even sounded like crap on my ipod.for you ipod owners the convience is awesome the portability is great but if you really want to hear how great a cd or a song should sound do yourself a favor go to a circuit city, target,or walmart and pick up this new sony mp3 player and listen to the sound, this thing is AMAZING! it has so many different sound enhancing features it is a little longer then a zippo, skinnier, and less thick then 1 to weighs about as much as a feather (lol) seriously though its lite, and the headphones that come with it are not to bad either for earbuds but i use the radio shack koss titanium pro 75 they are incredible headphones. the only problem i have with this and where the ipod rules right now is space but please SONY put out these new NWZ models in a 100+ gig and i'll buy another in a heartbeat. the video looks great on this although small but i compared the ipod with this and although smaller the video on this is more deatiled crisper and the blacks are deeper. also when you look up an album it has a little pic of all the albums where you can just go to that specific one click it and all the songs are there. i know i wrote alot but again this thing sounds better then any other mp3 player out there so if you can do without games and want to hear incredible sounding music (just not alot of music on your player that doesn't sound incredible)then by all means pick up the this new SONY mp3 player you have to HEAR IT TO BELIEVE IT!
Good Sony MP3 Player.......2007-09-25
I just got this player. I like it very much so far. It is small and fits perfectly in my hand and I love the red metallic look. It is easy to drop and drag in files into folders. It is also easy to navigate and the buttons are easy to use. However, the video capabilities of the player are limited because the screen is so small and it only plays MP4 and M4V files. I have not been able to find a converter that would allow me to convert my mpeg-2 files into MP4 files that the player recognizes so that is annoying. Sony should have provided a free converter with the MP3 player instead of charging $20.00. Overall, I would recommend this MP3 Player because it is fun and easy to use.
Update:
After hours of searching the Internet I found a free program (3GP Converter) to convert mpegs to MP4s that can be read by this Sony MP3 player and Sony PSP. For instructions on converting files go here: http://www.engadget.com/2004/12/21/how-to-get-videos-and-dvds-onto-your-sony-playstation-portable/) Really, it should not be this difficult. It also doesn't help that Sony is charging $28.00 for a silicon case (no clip) and a hard clear case that are not even yet available. What are they thinking? Sony is simply frustrating its customers who can easily abandon them for the more established IPod or Creative Zen. I used a custom skin to protect the Sony MP3 player from bestskinsever.com and will sew up an inexpensive case. I plan to use the pennies that I save to buy a decent pair of earphones.
Finally a superb Sony Player.......2007-09-21
Ok, I usually wait to test the product for a few weeks before posting a review, but this time I can't wait that long. It's been a while since I first started to look decent mp3 player that was easy to use, looked nice and was able to manage several file formats. Every player I tried was a bigger disappointment. I'll try to relate my story and see if this helps you out deciding on a product.
First of all let me say that I'm not a big fan of the iPod. By this I'm not implying that is a bad product, in fact, I love the design. The problem relies in iTunes. The inability to transfer songs you purchases to different players or burn CDs (because your CD drive was not supported) drove me insane. There is no drag-and-drop capabilities, so you must manage your music using their software. If you imported your CD collection to iTunes or if you bought all the songs form their website, this is not a problem, but in my case, my music is completely organized on my PC, so I simply refused to use any bundled software from Apple (or any other provider for that matter). I also tried Creative's Zen, and even though it was packed with features and had a fairly easy software to manage music, it was poorly designed and looked very cheap. Plus, let me stress that I really needed a drag-and-drop player. By far the only one that met this criteria was the iRiver, which was good, but the inability to create playlists made it virtually impossible to find your music (assuming that you have several hundreds). Afterwards I tried mp3's from Sony, Philips, Samsung and other brands that I can't even recall. Every one had its own music manager, but Sony had the most annoying software of them all (SonicStage).
A couple a days ago I stopped by a SonyStyle shop and checked out the new arrivals. Not only did the looks of this player grabbed my attention, but the ability to transfer files directly. This sounded like a bizarre move from Sony, but still, I decided to give it a try. I got the Black 4GB.
After plugging the player to my computer via the USB cable, Win XP recognized the Walkman displaying it as an icon in the Windows Explorer (note that you need Windows media player V11 installed, regardless of whether or not you intend to use it. No biggie.) and I started dropping files and folders. Afterwards I created and edited the playlists all from my PC. File transfer was really fast. Video transfer is also very cool, although the only format supported is .mp4. There is a nice converter out there for free for those of you who would like to use it. Within the player, you can navigate easily sorting music by artist, song, year or even by your created folders. Note that you can still use WMP to transfer your files if you still wish to.
As far as performance, its lightweight, has a 1.8' screen size which is more than enough for me. Battery so far has lasted 17+ hours and still working. FM Radio is a nice feature but it lacks a voice recorder. Picture display is decent, and that's all you get. As opposed to the iPod or the Zen, there are no contacts or calendar options. But seriously, do you ever need that?
I think Sony made a great move by getting rid of SonicStage, I finally feel I've found the player I've always wanted. Bottom line, if this is your first mp3 player or you are just sick of mediocre software for music transfers, look no further, this is the one you need.
PROS
- Drag-and-drop, no software needed!
- Ability to create/edit folders, playlists from the Windows explorer
- Design
- Crisp Screen
- Lightweight
CONS
- Limiter amount of video formats, only .mp4 supported
- No Voice recorder
- No accessories in the market yet.
Sony's first iPod killer.......2007-09-03
I'm not the first to say that Sony has not had a good track record with their "Network Walkman" series of MP3 players. With their restrictive ATRAC formats, horrible SonicStage software, and just the whole year-behind feel to their products, Sony MP3 players have never caught on, which is a shame considering they were at the forefront of the portable cassette and CD generation. Well, the wait is now over, and I've gotta say, Apple should be worried.
The 4GB S616 is priced $40 below its current 2nd gen Apple counterpart, but has a lot more to offer and is super sexy. Now, I'm a self-professed Apple fanboy, but this has got a lot to love, too. For starters, it can play video--and if you have 320x240 MP4s converted for an iPod, the videos will work perfectly.
And then, the screen--it is BEAUTIFUL. Not as bright as a nano, but it is bigger than the nano's and the colors are rich and vibrant. With a 320x240 resolution squeezed into a 1.8" screen, the screen is amazing. It is small for extended sessions (don't watch "Lawrence of Arabia"), but perfect for a few music videos or an episode of Scooby-Doo. Honestly, the screen is so nice, when I have a still photo on, it almost looks like one of those fake, store-demo models.
Next, formats. It can play MP3, WMA, PCM, and the ever-important AAC audio formats, MP4 video, and JPG photos. And yes, you can listen to music while viewing your photos. Also, it has a built-in FM radio for when you're looking for something new. Personally, I'm just glad they nixed ATRAC.
Then, there's battery life. At 33 hours for audio, it bests the nano by 9 hours, and has a whopping 9 hours video viewing, the S616 has got to have one of the longest battery life spans out there for a player this size with these features.
And the always important audio quality. This thing sounds great. With Sony's 3 clear audio technologies, this thing sounds better than my nano. Really. I'm no audiophile, but the difference is noticeable.
Finally, size. This thing is SMALL. It's 1.5x thicker than a nano, but almost an inch shorter and about the same width. Amazing, especially considering the size of the screen and the fact that it plays videos.
I know, lots of love. But there are negatives. One, it's not fully Mac-compatible. Yeah, Sony says it won't work, but because it's plug-and-play, it will mount on any Mac OS X computer--I'm using it on my Macbook. The only problem is, you can't unmount it (it'll just keep reappearing), so you'll have to log out, then put your Mac to sleep twice to get it out. A hassle, but only if you're syncing stuff daily. Also, because it relies on WMP11 on PCs, you can't create playlists for it on a Mac.
Also, if you're used to the iPod interface, searching for stuff can be a pain. Don't get me wrong, it's a clean, usable interface, but Apple's got the iPod made for speed and convenience--every thing you need is right on the iPod's clickwheel. On the S616, the volume buttons are on the side, there's the five-way control, plus a back and an option button. Button overkill for a person coming from only using iPods.
I was going to give the S616 five stars. I wanted to give it five stars. But the lack of Mac support kills it for me. Yes, it works on a Mac, but not perfectly, and for that, I have to take away a star. But if you're looking for an inexpensive, feature-packed alternative to the ubiquitous iPod, look no further. The Walkman has finally arrived.
Product Description
The DVP-NC85H five-disc DVD player offers 720p/1080i upscaling through an HDMI connection (High Definition Multi Media Interface). HDMI allows the transfer of uncompressed digital audio and video signals to other HDMI equipped components, providing an uncompromised picture. It also features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, which delivers accurate and vivid images to the television. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include a 12bit/108MHz video DAC (digital to analog converter), and 24 bit/192KHz audio, providing high-quality video and audio processing for vivid images and crystal clear sound.
Amazon.com Product Description
Store hours upon hours of entertainment in Sony's DVP-NC85H/B five-disc carousel changer. This versatile unit plays DVDs and a variety of older disc formats, such as VCD and SVCD, as well as your favorite music CDs. And since the unit supports HDMI connections, you're sure to get the best picture possible.
HDMI Compatible
High-Definition Multi-media Interface (HDMI) is an interface format that provides uncompressed digital audio and video directly to a digital television. It represents the current state of the art in high-definition video and sound because the information never has to be converted into an analog format. Another benefit of HDMI is that it puts all that information into one cable and one easy-to-use connector.
An added benefit of connecting the DVP-NC85H/B to your set with HDMI is that the unit can "upscale" commercial DVDs, which are rendered at 480p resolution, to a digitally interpolated 720p resolution, which makes for a much sharper picture.
For analog sets, the DVP-NC85H/B includes a 108 MHz 12-bit digital-to-analog converter for sharp picture and clear action. It features composite, S-video and component video connectors, as well as optical digital, coaxial digital, and RCA analog audio outputs.
Precision Cinema Progressive
While other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level, Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. This makes the picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because the technology uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle the differing pixel behavior. It also uses separate algorithms to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are virtually free from motion artifacts.
Precision Drive 3 System
Sony's DVP-NC85H/B delivers excellent picture and sound quality--even from damaged discs. How? The unit's Precision Drive 3 system allows you to playback some DVDs that may have been damaged or warped without a degradation of picture quality. This feature comes in handy when watching rentals or other heavily used discs.
MP3 and JPEG File Playback
The DVP-NC85H/B plays MP3 sound files and JPEG photo files. Simply insert the disc and use the remote control to navigate through your folders to your files.
Customer Reviews:
I really love this player!.......2007-12-21
After over 40 hours of play time thus far, I just love this DVD player. Some might think it's slightly slow but I am not that impatient! I think it works extremely well and the only slight drawback is that it does make some mild mechanical noise while loading or waiting to be loaded. This is not a big deal at all and it stops as soon as a disc is loaded. It's totally a minor thing. I can't believe that I was able to get this fabulous 5 DISC SONY DVD Player for $120!! Merry Christmas to Me! ;-) (yeah!)
Great Picture, Great Sound & Easy To Use.......2007-12-12
I bought this unit to replace several CD players and a single disc DVD player. It is all I hoped it would be. I've got it hooked up to an HDTV and a Home Surround Sound System. Picture and sound quality are great. The system was easy to kook up. The manual is fairly straight forward. The multi disc feature makes it easy to load up on music and sit back and enjoy without the need to swap out discs. I'm not into random play, so negative comments in some other reviews had no impact on me. I bought it based on the features I knew I would use and wanted. The price also was quite good. I would highly recommend this unit until an HD version comes along that can match it.
Buy this instead of a CD changer.......2007-12-02
My Denon DCM-390 died after 3 years. Just up and died. (It had replaced Denon's earlier, cheaper model that had lasted for ten years (it was cd-r's that killed the beast).
When my first Denon died after 10 years, I upgraded. I trusted the brand. And HDCD! (woo hoo cares.) It was always glitchy, anyway.
3 years. $300. I paid $200 for the one that lasted 10 years!
So I painstaked over this purchase. I wanted a disc changer. Our Music stereo is completely separate from our DVD/5 channel surround sound setup (we don't do network television).
Why consider a DVD changer to replace your CD changer?
The higher bit-rate sampling? The cheaper cost? The wider compatibility? The flexibility when your dvd player finally dies?
What the hell, I thought, let's try it.
(Sorry Amazon) I bought this one directly from Sony. Refurbished for $95 with a 3 year replacement guarantee.
After my experience with the higher end (not super-high end, I know) Denon, I was more interested in how long will it last than how perfect will it sound.
Yippee! It sounds better than the Denon ever did. Even with the HDCD discs.
Sure, it takes longer to load--it acts more like a DVD player than a CD player--but, man, it sounds great through my Denon amp and Polk speakers. It sounds even better through headphones.
I was tempted, almost convinced that I needed to spend another $200 at least to get a quality CD changer (with a 1 year limited warranty). I was sure there must be a reason the Cd changers cost so much more than the DVD/CD changers. I'm glad I didn't.
I'll be happy if I never hook this thing up to a TV. It sounds great!
good dvd player.......2007-11-19
Good upscaling dvd player. A big improvement over my old non-progressive player. Haven't had any reliabilty issues yet, but only had for 2 months. I am enjoying this machine!
Works perfect as I expected.......2007-11-05
This player was a replacement for my 1992 Sony that was quite similar to this one. The 1992 worked well for years and had slowly passed away. The new one works perfectly as I expected. The controls are on a bevel slanted towards the top though and not as easy to see and use as my old Sony. But still a very very good product.

Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT!!.......2007-12-26
My son got this for Christmas and my Daughter got an Ipod. The Walkman is SO much easier to use! Very user friendly, has FAR MORE features than the ipod and you don't have to deal with the "i" software or syncing thru apple. This player works fabulous with Windows Media Player. It's fast and so easy to upload, select, sync...everything you need to do in no time flat! The iPod is confusing, the buttons are strange and not very user friendly. I wish I had bought one of these for my daughter and not wasted my money on a iPod! This is a FABULOUS player for songs, video, pics...EVERYTHING! Very Easy to navigate!! I LOVE IT and my son is THRILLED!!!
Great!.......2007-12-25
Congratulations to Sony. This amazingly compact device works perfect right out of the box. Loading MP3s and WMA files was simple. The sound quality is excellent. Well worth the price
Don't be fooled by low price, they soak you for the add ons!.......2007-12-13
Don be fooled by the low price, the docking station and cradles are limited, and very expensive. They get you in the door and then soak you for the extras... Ipod looks like better deal when you price it out...
I love this player, but..........2007-12-12
its great in every way except that there are not many accessories for it. no armband holder, no speaker docs or much else. maybe that'll change but its easy to use and sounds awesome.
Excelente!!!.......2007-11-23
Es un articulo excelente, respaldado por la incomparable calidad Sony, el sonido es genial asi como la resolución de video y la capacidad, 100% recomendado.

This thin, slider-style phone also features a 2-megapixel camera/camcorder, fast Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR connectivity with music streaming, Memory Stick Micro expansion, Web browser for viewing full Internet sites, email access, an FM radio with RDS, and EDGE data support.

With AT&T's Mobile Music service, you can access your Napster subscription service for music downloads to keep you booming out the tunes for up to 20 hours. |
AT&T Service
The W580i operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"), with availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. This third-generation, high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go.
The phone has a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. AT&T's MEdia Net service lets you do more than just stream videos--it enables you to receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. It also features AT&T Mobile Music, which provides access to the Napster subscription music service in addition to Music ID song-recognition software, music videos and The Buzz music news portal. (A MEdia Max subscription bundle is recommended for accessing AT&T's Internet, video, and music services.)
Phone Features
The W580i Walkman phone offers a full-function digital audio player that's compatible with MP3 and AAC files. The front of this slider phone includes dedicated music control buttons, and it includes Sony Ericsson's innovative "shake to shuffle" feature. With Shake control activated, press and hold the Walkman key and flick your wrist. A vibration lets you know that the track has been changed--a new song from your current playlist is randomly selected and automatically played.
With the TrackID service, you can identify any song that you can hear by just recording a snippet of sound using the microphone. After sending the file for recognition, you'll have the name, artist and album sent to your phone. Other Walkman features include MegaBass enhancement for added depth of sound, a flight mode that lets you keep listening to tunes with the phone's network connectivity turned off, and Disc2Phone software for easy transfer of song files between phone and PC. It also includes a built-in FM radio with RDS, which displays the name of the currently playing song (when tuned to compatible radio stations).
This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones. You can connect your laptop (either via Bluetooth or wired USB) and enjoy dial-up networking--surf the Internet, send email, and access files from a server.
The built-in 2.0 megapixel camera captures stills and video--and playback of video or still pictures is only limited to the memory card size. Picture effects and custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be setup to fit your personality. It provides support for PictBridge technology so you can print your photos without the need of a PC (either using USB or Bluetooth). And the W580i makes it easy to send snapped photos directly to a blog or an online photo, complete with text. This phone is also compatible with RTSP/3GPP streaming video playback
You can even take your favorite tracks to the track with the W580i, which will count your steps, your calories and monitor your running speed/distance/time with the integrated motion sensor. Your workout results are stored in your phone so you can monitor your progress.
The phone also ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and IMAP4 protocols, while the included Access NetFront Web Browser allows you to surf full HTML web sites. It also supports RSS feeds, allowing you to use your phone to view up-to-the-minute news and other content from selected Web sites and blogs. Just subscribe to the feed and let it come to you. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages.
The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard. This means the phone can be used with the included Sony Ericsson Sync Station software, which lets you synchronize your Microsoft Outlook calendar, contacts, notes and tasks on your PC with the phone.
Other features include:
- 2-inch LCD with a 240 x 320-pixel resolution and support for 262K colors
- Up to 1000 contact entries, each with five number fields
- Built-in pedometer and fitness applications
- Picture blogging with Google Blogger
- Mobile email and messaging via AOL/AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN
- Java support for online and offline 3D games (preloaded games include PacMan and Ms. PacMan)
- USB 2.0 wired connectivity with mass storage capability
- PIM functions including calendar, tasks, notes, alarm, calculator, stopwatch, and timer
- T9 text entry technology
- 72-chord polyphonic ringtones and MP3 ringtones

Good phone, good features, but horrible keys........2007-12-25
I have owned this phone since late August 2007, and it's the best phone I've owned yet. I put my Motorola Razr through the washing machine one Friday night after our football game, long story, but I was looking for a new phone anyway. After I bought the phone, I heard one of my friends say that he bought the same phone two weeks before and his buttons had cracked straight down the middle, and I totally thought he wanted me to return my phone because he didn't want anyone having the same phone. He was not kidding, because five days later, my first key broke, the number 5.
Now it is December, I'm looking for another phone, not because this phone isn't great, but every student at school has a slider. It's been a great phone except every key has cracked down the middle!
Great Deal.......2007-12-21
This phone is so cool. It has so many features that I still dont know about. Tons of music and FM Radio.
Great purchase. I would recommend to anyone.
This is my 3rd phone to purchase through Amazon.com and they do a great job of providing you with the information you need. Dealing with the phone providers is a different story but it has nothing to do with Amazon.com and how they do business.
Very disappointed with the W580i........2007-12-19
My previous phone was the Sony Ericsson S710a, and loved it. So I thought the W580i would be an improvement from that. But sadly it's not. And for the price through Amazon being $.01, I should have bought a different phone even if I had to spend more.
Good:
Clear sound.
Small but good clear screen.
Bad:
Keys cracked right after I had it a month. Amazon didn't seem to know their own return policy as, of the 8 representitives I spoke with, 4 said it could be exchanged with no problem for a different phone, and 3 said they would research it only to send a standard denial email, and one had the courage to say all of them were wrong, apologize for being transferred, and tell me what did I expect from a free phone.
No light on the camera
So so camera, there is pixel lines in every picture
Horrilbe speaker phone
Don't even think about using the speaker to play music.
Sometimes will receive an error of death.
Slider feels flimsy, and I worry that it will eventually break.
Battery life isn't great.
Wrist strap hole is useless
Overall it's a basic phone aimed at teens. Wheras the S710a I would say was marketed towards an older crowd. So I was a sucker for buying this, and now I have to live with it for my 2 year contract. I will most likely end up buying a phone off of eBay within 6 months just to get away from this one.
I recommend a DO NOT BUY...plenty of other phones are better than this one.
Amazing Features - BAD Design.......2007-12-17
I've been a die-hard SonyEricsson fan for years...ever since the T616. I held onto my S710 until it's very last breath. When I finally had to make a change, I pondered and compared for months. Call me a nerd, but form and function in mobile phones is incredibly important!
Upon first receiving my W580i, I was ecstatic. The feature set and user-interface are AMAZING! The size is exactly what I wanted...I can't even feel that there's a phone slipped into my pockets.
As an avid texter, it wasn't long before the keys on the numeric keypad started cracking. The keys on the slider are now disloging from the case as well. I filed a return with SE, but how is one meant to function without a cell phone for 4-6 weeks while they repair? Further...there's nothing being done to prevent it from happening again?
For light use, this phone is awesome. For a power user...hold out for something else!
Love it, but be wary.......2007-12-11
I've had this phone for almost a month and I've loved every second of it. I'm a long time Nokia user and finally switched to Sony for the slider and alleged superior vocal quality. I love the w580i for its small size, functionality, and endless array of features. Unfortunately, my pampered little phone has already had a button break, something I find unacceptable before at least the year mark. Also, the sound is not much better than my former Nokia (even after the Nokia had broken in half...love the flip phone). But like I said, I still love this phone. It is snazzy and fresh and cooler than lime jello on a hot summer day.

Customer Reviews:
excellent choice for worksite.......2007-11-29
We're using the Sony on work sites, where it competes with noise and dirt. This Boombox holds its own! Makes the day go faster, which ain't half bad!!
Good - Except for the Cord.......2007-11-27
This is almost the perfect jobsite radio. The D battery supply works well since the other jobsite radios require that you own a certain cordless tool to operate their units. I can get two days on a set of D batteries and do not need to crank up the generator unless we are cutting or grinding.
The handle feels cheap - partially because the unit is so heavy and the transformer on the cord adapter is retarded. A built in transformer would have been too easy to do, what is another 1/2 pound when the transformer on the chord is stored in the secret compartment anyway.
The sound is much better than the Bosch box even though the Bosch box looks way more cool. This unit could use a GFI and a whip antenna like the Box has.
Overall, this is the way to go. I hope Sony upgrades the chord, antenna handle and adds a GFI in the next version.
Good value - has everything.......2007-11-02
This boombox arrived quicker than the music CD's ordered at the same time. It came quick! Nice machine. Sony seems to have pulled it off again. I have had this machine for only a few weeks so far, but my initial reaction is that it is a great value. JB - Reno
Solid Unit!.......2007-10-24
While I admit I am partial to Sony products, this item met my expectations in all facets. Solid bass, digital tuning, streamlined controls, easy synchronization to almost any MP3 or external audio device and heavy plastic construction makes this item 'every bit as advertised'. My application of this boombox was for my garage/workspace and even though I likely won't be getting it wet anytime soon, it certainly will be subject to dust and cold/warm temperatures and it appears to be tuff enough to stand up to it. Although I'm not crazy about the D.O.T. or Hunter Orange color, it is a good, quality item for the price...and, as far as my research indicated...is the ONLY item on the market built to withstand exceptional/tuff environments.
BUY THIS!.......2007-10-03
One very small complaint: The digital display won't properly show the volume level (like I really need it anyway) but works fine for all other function (weird). Otherwise I love it. I bought it for pool-side use at my condo complex and it blows everyone else's little alien-head looking radios away! I strap my MP3 player to the handle and kick it on battery power for hours. Haven't had to change them yet and I've had it for months. Well worth the price. I even left it in the rain for a short period of time with no consequences.

Amazon.com Product Description
Designed with serious music fans in mind, the Sony D-NF430 CD Walkman lets you listen to your favorite CDs, MP3s, and radio stations in style. The sleek portable player is ideal for listeners who already have extensive music libraries, as it comes with bundled software to burn and play back everything from MP3 to ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus tracks. The latter is an advanced audio compression technology offering multiple bit rates, allowing you to create music compilations tailored to your listening preference. More significantly, a single CD-R/RW disc can store up to 490 ATRAC3plus selections when burned at 48 kbps, thus saving money, time, and storage space. And if you're just starting your digital music collection, don't fret, as the D- NF430 is compatible with Sony's Connect Music store and its vast online music archives.
Listeners who want a little more variety in their music can turn to the built-in digital AM/FM tuner, which also offers accurate drift-free tuning of select TV and weather stations. The tuner is ideal for catching a special report on NPR, listening to the ballgame, or receiving a quick 24- hour weather forecast. And switching between those stations is quicker than ever thanks to the 51 station presets, including 30 FM, 10 AM, four weather band, and seven TV presets.
The D-NF430 offers a wide array of playback modes (18 in all), ranging from repeat and random play to track programming to bookmarking. The five-direction control key, meanwhile, makes navigation a breeze. The CD Walkman's no slouch from an audio perspective, either, with such features as a parametric equalizer that lets the user set not only the amount (in dB) by which a certain frequency band is boost or cut, but also the width and/or center frequency of the band; Digital Mega Basss sound, which employs digital processing technology to produce rich, deep bass tones with extremely low harmonic distortion; and a two-position Automatic Volume Limiter System (AVLS) that maintains the volume output at levels below the distortion threshold for cleaner sound reproduction. Best of all for joggers and other active users, the D-NF430 offers Sony's skip-free G-Protection technology, which ensures quick recovery from horizontal and vertical shock.
Other details include an easy-to-read three-line LCD, multilingual support for LCD text and ID3 tagging, a set of earbud headphones, and an auto-shutoff feature to conserve battery life. The D- NF430, which runs for up to 413 hours on a single AA battery (not included), measures 5-1/2 inches in diameter and 1-1/4 inches tall and is backed by a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box
D-NF430 CD Walkman, earbud headphones, remote, software, user's manual.
Customer Reviews:
Great little player!.......2007-12-24
I had been trying to decide between a CD or mp3 player. I walk a lot, as well as work out at the gym. I basically like to either listen to the radio, or play disco (yes, disco) music to get my juices flowing.
I settled on the CD player, as I really don't want to bother downloading songs, when I have a dozen CDs that will do what I want.
I am absolutely delighted with this player. The sound is clear, and the radio stations come in strongly. Even while on a treadmill, the player never skipped.
I was not completely thrilled with the controls, but in short order, learned to master them. Forget about the earbuds, which I could not keep from falling out of my ears. I bought a separate set of Sony earphones. The remote control is a nice touch, but
