Customer Reviews:
I'm so glad I ignored the negative reviews!.......2007-05-22
I was extremely trepidatious about buying this product after reading some of the reviews here on Amazon, but the recent price drop to forty-some dollars was enough to sway me, and I went ahead and ordered it. And I'm so glad I did!
I'll agree that sixty dollars was a bit steep for this clock, but at the lower price-point, I'm really thrilled with what I got. Whoever says this thing is ugly when you see it in person is talking out of their [...]. The unit is small, sleek, and very handsome. The sound quality is surprisingly robust for a one-speaker radio, and the unit's power cord doubles as an FM antenna, so the reception is amazing. It's true that the display is difficult to read in direct sunlight unless you set the clock to its brightest setting, but that's true of any digital display, including the one on the last clock radio I had, which was twice the price. On my own nightstand, I find this display easy to read from any angle, at any time of day, when set to medium brightness, and its still subtle enough not bother me at night. The button layout is exactly the way I want it, with the buttons you're apt to be fumbling for in the dark large and on the top, and ones you don't want to accidentally press while fumbling tucked away on the back. It's also untrue that the button to reset the alarm is on the back next to the daylight savings time button; the reset button is on the top of the machine, just behind the snooze but too much smaller than the snooze to be mistaken.
As for the complaint that this clock doesn't automatically set itself, give me a break! How often do you really have to set your clocks, anyway? Having a self-setting alarm clock was the whole reason I had to get a new one in the first place; now that they've changed the dates for daylight savings time, I kept having to manually re-set my clock every time the thing decided to automatically set itself again. And before you go shouting bloody murder about the fact that this Sony clock radio doesn't have any place to stick a 9-volt battery, you should be made aware that, even in a power outage, all of the more tedious-to-set functions, like the radio presets, remain saved, and the clock DOES have an internal system that saves ALL data, including the time, in the event of brief power outages (lasting less than a minute). That means the only time you would really need a 9-volt backup, anyway, is in the event of a long-lasting outage, and in my own experience those 9-volts tend to go dead so quickly, in the event of one of those kinds of outages you wind up late for work, anyway.
All in all, I'm really pleased with this machine. It's sleek and versatile. Just make sure you read the instructions so you'll be aware of all its available functions, and bear in mind that it doesn't have the option of installing a 9-volt backup battery for long-lasting power outages, and I think you'll be really pleased.
loved some aspects; really disliked others.......2007-04-28
I still have my fully-functional Sony "Cube" Dream Machine from the 90's, but I wanted better sound, more accurate tuning, and an updated, more stylin' look. This model, which I'll dub the "Tube," looked like the answer. I read the reviews here and was surprised at the strong negative reactions, so I visited a local brick & mortar to see the clock for real. It looked innocent enough - downright purty even. Sure, lotsa buttons, but I thought, "That's no biggie, and how awful can those other features really be anyway?" I returned home and purchased the Tube from our friendly retailer Amazon, which had the lowest price and shipped free. Well, sadly, it turned out that those other features bugged me plenty - enough that I returned my purchase.
Pros: Aesthetically beautiful design, great sound, digital tuning - all I was looking for and more. The alarm buzzer and chimes were not unpleasant, yet still got the job done. Who'd have thought? Loved the Nap feature, which allowed use of the alarm without having to reset morning wake-up time twice. However ...
Cons: 1) The lit blue background panel and lit white numbers of the time display truly were excessively bright at night on high and medium settings. And they were far too dim in the daytime at low and medium settings. I don't want to be messing with display brightness every day - I just want to be able to read the darn clock. Likewise, display visibility decreased noticibly when viewing the clock from any angle other than head-on. The simple design of the older "Cube" was superior; the lit numbers against an unlit black background neither intruded at night nor disappeared in the day, and could be read at any angle. 2) The alarm melodies were truly heinous. Guess I just can't tolerate extraordinary classical music (or perhaps any music) being reduced to single electronic tones no better than one might find in a novelty "Happy Birthday" greeting card. Obvious answer was to use the perfectly acceptable buzzer or chime. But a musical crime is still a musical crime and must be noted. 3a) For me, setting the time, the alarms, and the radio stations - and selecting the preset stations later - was not intuitive in the least. Instead, downright confusing. I am reasonably skilled at operating home electronics, but I just felt stupid after attempting to operate my "Tube." Alarm-setting should be as easy as on my "Cube" (which I can do in the dark by feel) and radio-setting should be as easy as on my Sony under-cupboard radio/CD or Sony car radio/CD. 3b) Part of this problem was the combination of multiple functions on the same button. Another factor was the need to press a sequence of buttons both on the side and the top to accomplish a single task. 4) The nightlight feature was unique and attractive - at first. But I ended up turning off the nightlight once in bed. Just couldn't fall asleep easily with the light shining at the same level as my head just a short distance away - even when on the low setting. The nightlight would have been helpful if it came on by itself as the room darkened, and when shut off at bedtime, then came back on automatically the next evening. But remembering to visit my bedroom at every sundown to manually switch on the nightlight so I could find my bed later at sleep-time? Might as well expend the same effort to turn on the table lamp right beside the alarm clock.
The clock's faults were surprisingly glaring - seemed like there just couldn't have been any focus group testing on this critter prior to production. A disappointing effort made moreso by the few very attractive qualities that the clock did have. I'm grateful for Amazon's rockin' return policy. Still wanting a new alarm clock, and being a Sony addict despite this experience, I just ordered a different model I'll dub the "Wedge." Sony ICF-C630 FM/AM Clock Radio with AC/DC Operation It is stylin' too, though in a more casual, less sophisticated way. While it has a lit panel display just like the "Tube," the display appears to be dark letters on a green background. I'm hoping this combo provides better contrast and eliminates the need for changing brightness settings daily. Looks like the various buttons might be better conceived also. And hey, I can certainly live without digitally preset radio stations when I only listen to NPR or classical on the bedroom clock anyway.
A great alarm clock.......2007-03-31
Well like all alarm clocks you have to read the instructions on how to set the clock, but once you learn how to set it you don't have to refer to the instructions time and time again, which I find helpful. I also like that there are several different sound settings I can have waking me up. The actual alarm buzzer is soft at first so you are gradually woken up instead of one of those heart pounding wake-ups you get from traditional alarm clocks. You can choose to have the radio wake you up or some other sounds. I love it I use it every morning. It was definately worth the investment.
Sony's Tubular Clock Radio fails on two counts:.......2007-02-18
Okay... this model gets ONLY a 2 from me and here is why:
Yes, I agree the publicity photos are misleading. This is NOT some 'space-age' design with fancy or soothing lights and melodic ring-tones. It is just a stubby round-shaped clock radio... nothing more. It tunes in stations fairly-well, which is why I gave it a second Star.
But I would take all those cosmetic limitations if ONLY the unit had two of the most basic and important features found in virtually every traditional clock radio on the market today:
1. BACKUP BATTERY. Where is it? WHY isn't it there. Come on, Sony... every 2-bit clock-radio protects all those settings and saves the time durning a power outage or unplugging. How in the HELL can you put out such a product without this feature?? And you call yourself SONY? Abysmal.
2. AUTO-TIME Adjust. Again, another shocker. You actually have no option except to manually (spit) sit there and press, press, press those buttons for time and alarm. I couldn't believe it when I read the paper booklet from edge to edge. Again, something most all clock-radios had this for years now. *knock-knock* "Hello? Soooooonyyyy McFly... anyone home?"
If these things are not important to you... hey, go to town with this radio and be happy. The ONLY place my Sony radio is going is back for a refund... based SOLEY on the two complaints above.
Sorry, Sony, but in this case... it is balony.
Why does everyone hate it? I don't.......2006-11-18
I think this alarm clock is great. I don't know why all of the bad reviews. The design is modern and attractive. The szooze feature is great. One tap for 10 minutes, two for 20, etc. The radio sounds as good as a mono-speaker can. The night light feature is an added plus. The only think that is tricky is setting the alarm, but nothing you can't get used to.

Best Alarm Clock I've owned........2007-06-13
You can set four different alarms, it plays chiptunes in addition to beeping or the radio, and the orange/green lighting is pretty cool. Also, it has the rather dangerous but desirable feature of variable-snooze. You can hit snooze multiple times and it will let you sleep accordingly.
Radio reception is poor but static wakes me up just as well as music, and I use the melody anyway.
Excelent Alarm Clock.......2007-05-13
This is an exceptionally well designed alarm clock. When the alarm is set, an orange window on the face of the clock lights up. This window has the time the alarm is set, so there is no doubt that the alarm is set and the time that it is set for.
Satisfied.......2007-03-01
You would not believe how hard it is to find a decent alarm clock. All I wanted was a alarm clock that shut off automatically on the weekend but the Emerson Research smart set was the only 2\5\7 day setting alarm clock I liked. After buying two of those and having issues with both, one the radio would lose the station over time and not wake you up, two, a brand new one having a bad LED and poor radio reception. Emerson needs to check their quality and then maybe they will have a great product. Yes this Sony has a hard to read display because of the viewing angle but if you have a small table next to the bed it works just fine. The radio pulls in every station and sounds good and loud for the size of the device. The alarms are really easy to set all you do is turn the knob to the desired time. Plus all you have to do is hit one button to shut the alarms off for the weekend or have two new sets of alarms. This thing gives you up to four alarms. If it had a better display I would give it 5 stars.
Great Idea, but ..........2007-03-01
I agree the features are great, but two problems:1 - the sound is actually worse than you would expect from such a small speaker today; I could live with that, but 2 - the clock display is only readable from a very small viewing angle. You see only the amber backlight if the unit is above your line of sight and the same if it's below the very narrow fixed design height which is slightly below level with your eye. I tried all sorts of props and shims to make it readable, but if I moved, the display vanished again. I gave up and returned mine.
Very impressed.......2007-02-23
I bought this alarm in large part because of the dual alarm feature. I take the bus to work and on weekends/holidays, which I don't always have off, I need to get up earlier. This alarm not only has two alarms that I can turn on and off. Which means I don't have to change my alarm setting!!!! I can also see that it is set, which reduces the going to sleep paranoia on my part. I love it just for this.
But the weekend setting allows me to have two other alarms available for times I have to wake-up and do things on my days off, rarely actually the weekend. This is a really cool alarm system. And I love waking up to music that will wake me up, radio has never worked, so the melody setting is great as well.
Amazon.com Product Description
This clock radio's digital-synthesized AM/FM tuner precisely locks in the most powerful signal for clean, drift-free radio reception. Its AM wide-band tuning, with a frequency range up to 1710 kHz, allows reception of all AM radio stations regulated by the FCC. Seven random station memory presets provide convenient one-button tuning to your choice of FM or AM stations. The dual-alarm system permits two separate wake-up settings, an especially useful feature for working couples, while having dual wake-up stations allows you to select a different radio station for each alarm. A battery-free power backup system eliminates the need for a battery in the event of a blackout or other power failure, and maintains clock and alarm settings for up to six hours of power loss.

Love the preset buttons!.......2007-07-31
The best thing about this clock radio are the preset buttons! We have them on our car radios; why can't more clock radio makers incorporate preset buttons into their designs? I've had two of these for a number of years, and would like another, but can't find anything like this.
Best alarm clock I have ever owned..........2007-04-03
I have owned this alarm clock for over a decade and wish I could find another. There are two features that I find difficult to live without now. The first is the power back up without batteries. It is nice to know you have six hours of backup without worrying about how old a battery is. The second and most important to me is being able to select which days of the week either alarm is supposed to function. This feature is genius and I am surprised not to see it on more alarm clocks.
Not a good receiver.......2006-12-30
I purchased this clock radio several years ago -- and immediately found that it did not receive the radio stations I want, at least not very well. Another radio on the other side of our bed tunes the same stations just fine.
I also was annoyed at the beeps generated every time you push a button. I don't want to wakeup my wife when I change something!
My daughter just gave me a new Timex Model T308 clock radio to replace the Sony. The Timex works great, installed in the same location as was the Timex.
Great Clock Radio.......2002-02-06
I've had one of these for a few years and love it. The best feature is the alarm that can be set for specific days of the week. I have it set for M-F and do not have to worry about the unwanted weekend alarm.
The only undesirable aspect of the clock is that the background it lit and not the numbers...this can make it a bit more difficult to see the numbers some times.
I recently moved and this was one of the casualties of the move so I am looking for another, but would love to find one of these again.
Finally, fully digital clock and radio!.......2001-06-04
I have searched, for years, to find a small clock-radio with digital tuning. It's about time that someone created digital AM/FM tuning into a small space. Sounds good, wakes me up, snooze feature sooths me to sleep, easy to digitally tune...the absolute small radio, and reasonably priced!

20 Years Old and Still Going.......2001-10-04
My mother bought me a white Sony Dream Machine when I was in high school. I still have the same clock almost 20 years later, although its more of a beige color now. It's always functioned well, with easy buttons to manipulate, and is a decent radio. It hasn't gained or lost a single minute! It's not a fancy clock, with a ton of glorified features such as CD player, nature sounds, etc.; just a plan alarm clock that does the job its suppose to, and does it well. It's getting time for me to buy a new one, not because it is malfunctioning, but I've dropped it so many times the top buttons have broken and its difficult to change the time now. I could keep on using this excellent clock radio, however people tell me its time to move on. When I finally do step up to the plate, it will be another dream machine with none of the fancy stuff that really doesn't serve the basic function of waking a person. Do I sound melancholy about a clock...sure I do; I'm letting go a piece of my childhood and one heck of a clock at that.
Faithful Companion.......2001-09-13
I've owned the same Dream Machine for 16 years, and only recently has it decided to stop working. The only problem I've had with it was that at some point many years ago, it didn't seem to care that it had a back up battery and would lose the time after losing power for 30 seconds.
I wake up to the radio, and have found it to be plenty loud when waking, although the buzzer may be too quiet for some.
In terms of longevity and reliability, I highly recommend it.
horrible!.......2000-10-14
I recieved a this clock as a gift. it was blue though. the alarm was horrible all it gave was a beeping sound that gradually got louder. it never woke me up. the other choice of alarm was to be woken up my a loud radio. that sometimes worked but it was very annoying. after about a year of use the alarm stopped working and wouldnt go off at all. i ended up throwing it in the garbage where it belongs. the stero on it was horrible as well, but with no antenna, what else do you expect? i think there was a cords that hung from the back and acted as an antenna but it was useless. if you need an alarm clock to wake up early in the morning for work, id advise to stay clear of this one.
Awesome, except for the color!.......2000-09-02
I received a Dream Machine as a graduation present and I must say it has served me faithfully for many years. In fact, my younger sister has been using it at her college so our family as a collective has gotten at least 9 good years out of this product. My only complaint is that it used to come in black and now it is only offered in this cheesy white color. The color is the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5.
As for the quality of the alarm and waking up, it is true that the actual beeping of the alarm is not very loud. However, this problem is easily rectified by setting the alarm to the radio setting and then pumping up the volume to either your favorite station or even some nasty static (for those deep sleepers). It's pretty hard to oversleep when the alarm goes off and static is blasting in your ear.
The best thing about his machine is it's simplicity of design and use. It's gives you exactly what you need and no frilly extras, all in an elegant and space-conserving cube design. One of the aforementioned needed features is the backup battery. You simply attach a 9V battery to the bottom and you never have to worry about not hearing your alarm because the power goes out.
This really is a great product . . . now if only someone at Sony would get a clue and offer it in different colors . . .
I don't always wake up!!.......2000-08-09
I got this alarm a couple years ago and now I'm using it in college. Unfortunately, I have had some incidents in over sleeping because the alarm wasn't loud enough and this was costly - academically. For people out in the market for a loud alarm clock, I personally wouldn't recommend this one.

Time Always Wrong.......2007-07-01
Got this for my Mom because the power at her house fails several times a year and wanted to get her a clock she would not have to re-set. It worked great for a year but now it is setting itself 2 hours fast and there is no way to correct it manually;-(
Worst Clock Radio Ever.......2007-02-19
It's no surprise Sony discontinued this item. This is the worst clock radio I've ever owned. There are a number of problems with this item:
- The radio-controlled clock-auto-adjust function does not work at all in my location.
- ALL settings including time, alarms and radio presets are lost whenever power is lost.
- The display is difficult to read at a distance or at a slight angle.
not so good.......2006-08-21
This clock is being returned. The time display is virtually unreadable. You CANNOT read the time if you are laying in bed and the clock is above you. Plus, the auto time set absolutely does not work. Finally, no battery back up.
For $50 this is a total waste of money. Sony should know better.
Doesn't deserve even 1 star in my book.......2006-08-06
This clock is unreliable and that's unacceptable. For the second time in a few weeks this clock has reset itself to the wrong time - once 4 hours and 15 minutes later than the actual time (eventually it reset itself to the correct time), then this morning 1 hour and 5 minutes earlier than the actual time (no reset so far). If today were a weekday, I'd be late for work. I'm now in the market for a new clock.
Things I haven't liked about this clock since the day I first bought it:
- The time is difficult to read unless you're looking at it almost straight on - mine is on a shelf about a foot higher that my bed so I've propped the back side of it up to angle it down and I must still rise up to read the time clearly.
- The time-zone switch labeling didn't match the diagram in the instruction manual. After two days of the clock resetting itself at midnight to Eastern time, I figured out I needed to set it on the Eastern time setting to get Pacific time. That's just careless on the part of the manufacturer or the manual's writer or editor. (Hope that individual never goes to work for NASA!)
- The buttons are tiny.
- Time setting manually is not very intuitive or perhaps just doesn't work when the clock is in its random time mode - I'm still looking for the manual which, like a fool, I didn't keep next to the clock after the first 6 months!
This clock's gotta go!
The simplicity of the RCA RP3720 Clock Radio is looking better all the time.
great alarm clock.. missing key element.......2006-05-31
great alarm clock. no battery!!?
didn't realize until i gave it as a gift to my dad. He didn't want to hurt my feelings and left it in the office as a clock. Next year, i get his computer UPS so he can use the alarm clock.
If your power ever went out, NOT WORTH IT

Customer Reviews:
Sony Clock radio.......2004-03-14
This is a great radio, but i'm taking it back. It has a nice small footprint, taking up only a little room on a nightstand. The nap feature and dual alarms are very nice features too. My primary reason for returning this radio is that the display is too bright, even at it's lowest setting. It's bright enough to keep me awake at night. At it's highest setting, this clock radio could double as a nightlight. Second, there is no battery backup. Third, the power cord is black. A very sharp contrast for a white clock radio. It just dosent look right.
everything I wanted, one thing I didn't.......2003-10-12
What I was looking for was a clock radio that had a digital tuner and a simple alarm on/off system (I seem to have a problem with pushing switches too far and not waking up.)
When I got the sony home and played with it's features I was floored, this is one of the best designed clocks I've ever seen. They put a lot of thought into this one, for example, you can set which preset radio station to wake up to. So if you want to use the sleep feature and go to bed listening to Beethoven's 5th on NPR but would rather wake up to some AC/DC you can do it!Also, the nap feature allows you to quickly set the alarm to go off in 15,30,40,etc minutes so that you don't have to reset your alarm time. And if you hit the snooze button it adds time, so instead of 10 minutes more sleep you get 20, or more!
However, I'm an insomniac, and find that I can only sleep well when the room is dark. If you are like me and can't handle any light in your room, then this is not the clock for you. SERIOUSLY. On the highest brightness level you can make shadow puppets on the wall. And on the lowest you can use the clock as a reading light (if you hold it close enough to your book).
So, even though this would have been the perfect clock for me I had to return it. Hopefully one day clock manufacturers will realize that a simple on off switch for the back lighting is all that's needed to let millions of people enjoy their products.
Beautiful styling!.......2003-04-28
As others have stated, the LCD display is very bright, but that's not that big of a deal for me. This unit has surprisingly good sound for being mono. I like the nap feature and the direct tuning buttons. Reception is very good, as I have been able to pick up a station in Charlotte, which is 90 miles away. I agree that it is odd that the alarms are limited to one being buzzer and one being radio. I listen to the radio when I go to bed, and keep it at a low volume. Luckily, I am a light sleeper, and the volume is enough to wake me. While shopping for clock radios I noticed that the majority of them have a traditional "dial-type" volume, even though the tuner is digital. If the volume were digital as well, then the user could set a preferred volume level for the alarm. I also thought it was unfortunate that Sony did not include a battery back-up.
Great Clock/Great Price.......2003-03-24
I love this clock, find it very easy to program. The only drawback I have found is that the LCD display is a little bright for me even in the lowest setting. Do wish it had a battery back-up!
Looks great: with a few minor drawbacks.......2003-03-05
This alarm clock/radio is great overall. The alarm and radio stations are very easy to program. There are a few of drawbacks to this clock: 1. The power cord is very thick, and black; whick looks odd with such a small, white clock. 2. There is no battery back-up in case of a power outage or blown fuse etc...kind of scary if you can't afford to be late for work, school etc. 3. The LCD display is always on and is a bit too bright. Overall it's a very handsome, user friendly alarm clock/radio.

Customer Reviews:
Great clock radio.......2003-11-18
Someone gave this to me as a gift and I used it for both wake-up calls and playing music for a few months. It works well and I like the big illuminated numbers and the snooze button. However, after I got a laptop, I used that as an alarm instead...so I'm selling this clock radio.
