Not worth it, really........2007-12-05
I bought this because of the conjugation feature, the price and the amazing reference to "over 800,000 translations". The conjugation feature is the only thing that keeps me from tossing it in the trash bin. The vocabulary is extraordinarily limited. The huge number of translations can be explained by the fact that each verb is conjugated at least 16 different ways for each of 11 different "persons", not including the infinitive. So a single verb knocks out at least 177 of your 800,000 translations. The keys are hypersensitive, so it's far too easy to enter typos and time consuming to go back and retype. I would not buy another one and believe it would be virtually useless in country.
OK, but vocabulary content is odd.......2007-08-12
I got this prior to my recent trip to Venezuela, because I misplaced the other one I have. It works OK, but I have a couple of peeves with it.
First of all, the "enter" key is right next to the "CLR" key. Add on top of that the buttons are a little small, and you can imagine the problem. Numerous times after entering a word to translate, I inadvertantly bumped the "CLR" button and wiped out what I'd entered.
The second problem is the selection of vocabulary words it contains. It supposedly contains 800,000 words? I'm guessing that includes all the various inflections. Some common words are not included (e.g., vaccination, vaccine, immunization, and many Spanish words on restaurant menus), but there are some very uncommon words that ARE included (e.g., "chuck" as a verb, and "ken," meaning "know"). On top of that, the useful phrases are few.
The words that are included, however, are fully conjugated. You can look up even the future perfect tense, for example, for first, second or third person, singular or plural. That is very helpful for those of use who are still working on the present tense!
Nice Little Machine.......2007-06-20
I believe the $25.oo I paid for it was well-spent.
The up side is that it fits easily in your pocket, quickly finds words, if it can't find a word it will often make a suggestion, conjugates verbs both in the affirmative and negative state, it has some games on it (hangman in single-user and multi-user, guess the translation of a word, race against the clock, test your memory - all with 3 levels of difficulty), and often give multiple translations for a word.
The down side is that for having 800,000 translations it sure is missing alot of the words I run into daily. It is no match for a dictionary. The buttons are a little bit quirky, sometimes giving you 2 letters instead of one, but the backspace compensates for that.
This is the only translator I have ever used. I give it 4 stars.
the best of the three i have.......2007-01-07
The one I have is a TR2250. It is the best of the three i have. I like it because of the verb conjugation ability, like: i will eat, i ate, i was eating, i am eating. My other 2 translators can not do that. Not even close. I get 3 different translations for cat: felino, gata, gato. This thing is small and light, you can slip it in your shirt pocket. I like it. The only problem i see is the buttons are a alittle touchy but the benefits far exceed the negative.

In addition to printing one and two-inch labels for many applications, the highly affordable Smart Label Printer 420 is a world-class label printer.
Customer Reviews:
Decent label printer.......2007-12-01
My workplace uses Seiko 420 and 450 label printers to print address labels and Code 39 barcodes. As with other reviewers, we have found that these printers have difficulty keeping output alignment straight when using labels less than the maximum height supported by the printer (i.e., the 1.13 x 3.5 inch small address labels), even when the label guides are fitted to the label roll. When the printer is upright, output tends to either slant towards one side of the label and can print outside the physical margins of the label. Our solution to this problem is to turn the printer on its side. This usually helps to keep output alignment straight.
We've had no problem using the bundled SmartLabel software for printing single labels, though we typically use Microsoft Word or Excel to print multiple labels at a time. I've noticed that our printer technicians sometimes have difficulty setting up the label printers, but the trick is to ensure that paper size, margins, orientation (portrait versus landscape) are set properly.
Overall, the SLP 420 and 450 printers are decent products, though maybe a bit tricky for mainstream users to set up or troubleshoot. The SLP 420 is slow when printing in Fine mode (203 dpi), so choose an SLP 450 over the SLP 420 if you intend to print many labels daily, because the SLP 450 is much faster. Perhaps Seiko could move the label guides closer to the traction feed in a future product revision to help keep output consistently straight.
It's been good to me so far.......2007-08-24
I have had the Smart Label Printer for over a year and haven't experienced the software issues that others have reported. I'm using a Macintosh, I don't know what the other raters are using (and I don't want to start a religious OS platform war!). I haven't experienced the skewing that another reviewer mentioned.
So far, I've found the printer to be reliable. It does what I ask it to do. No complaints here so far.
One of the worst printers I have ever seen.......2007-05-19
I bought this about a year ago because the Dymo was our of stock and I needed one for some sales materials. First off the software is terrible, it has a really bad time trying to crate printing lists (in fact I had to have Seiko support create a special file for me to get it to work with csv files. It also kept locking up, and I had to reinstall it twice because for some unexplained reason, after printing normally for a few months it started printing garbage. Uninstalling and reinstalling the software fixed that problem.
That brings up another issue which was support. While I did finally get a very knowledgeable support person on the phone who truly went above and beyond to get things working, it took forever (several weeks) to actually get to that person. They didn't respond to emails or phone calls for as I said several weeks.
This thing has a really hard time loading the labels straight and unless you use large shipping labels it keeps getting skewed or move over to one side. When it moves over to one side it can't find the holes that tell it to stop at the end and just keeps feeding labels. Mine finally broke today. I took it apart and saw that the feeder roller stopped getting tracking with the gears for the motor and so it just makes a bunch of irritating noises. Honestly that might be a good thing because now I have a reason to get a new one.
Seriously this thing is a piece of junk and not worth 20 dollars let alone the 100 that I paid for it.
Easy installation, pathetic documentation, frustrating.......2006-02-21
Installation is easy -- the "quickstart" instructions for that are good. Trying to do anything NOT documented in the "quickstart" instructions, however, requires lots of trial and error and is VERY frustrating. Most of the online documentation is inaccurate or just plain missing. If I ever figure it all out on my own, I will probably like this printer. It's very convenient to be able to print single labels instead of whole sheets of them ... but that's a big "if." Who has that kind of time?
Product Description
Stop wasting time trying to hand feed label sheets to your standard printer. Pick up the new Smart Label Printer (SLP) and you'll have everything you need to print labels easily, one at a time. Just like you want them, when you want them. No ink, toner, or complicated software to mess with. Plug the SLP into your Windows PC or Mac, connect to the built-in USB or Serial port and you're ready to print. With three great models to choose from, you're sure to find the Smart Label Printer that's just right for you.

Customer Reviews:
Never used it.......2002-10-07
I have never used this unit but I have tried many like it. Of all of these I have found that the Franklin units are the best.
The Franklin TES-118 English/Spanish Translator is great. It has Advanced verb conjugation. The more expensive Franklin unit like DBE-1450 Spanish/English are better but the TES-118 is all most people will need.
I don't like the multi-language like the Franklin TWE-118 5 Language European Translator, because the verb conjugations are not included and the dictionaries are a bit small. But this unit is still much better others in its class.
Worthless pocket crowder.......2001-09-10
Save your money. This "dictionary" must have been compiled by experts in Sanskrit. An amazing number of common Spanish words are not included. Many words, in both languages, are mis-defined. It is so awful, that I ended up checking the results against a paper dictionary....which of course renders the electronic device useless.
What can I say good? The conjugation feature is good...IF your verb happens to be in the pitiful lexicon. I also like the test and list functions. In other words, as long as you are working inside the dictionary`s limited set and rule out the wacky occasional definition, it works fine. But, honestly, I would save my money.
Very useful tool, with some limitations........2001-05-15
This little translator (actually a dictionary with verb conjugation, has been a major tool in my learning toolbox. First, the little machine is very well built. Mine has survived abusive treatment on the workplace and in my car, and keeps going. It's been left in a hot car, dropped on pavement, and generally thrown around and it continues to work as before. The little keyboard is surprisingly easy to thumb-enter. The display is large and clear. The verb-conjugation allows you to scroll through conjugations of a verb or search by English or Spanish translation, including compound verbs. It has a 40 word list that allows you to practice. It gives you the word in the language you choose, and requires you to enter the word in the other language.
Now for the limitations. First, there is no contextual information. For example, if an English word has two Spanish meanings, the translator does not give you any information to determine which word you need. In addition, the spelling trainer does not allow you to enter accent marks or tildes, which limits it's utilization for memorization. The machine does not handle reflexive verb forms at all. In addition, the conjugator offers the verb form for "you (formal), he, she, and it" as separate entries even though they have the same conjugated form. The machine also does not allow any form of drills with conjugated verb forms.
The device does have a couple of quirks. It omits some common words, even "cat." Sometimes the -s- key functions as the -y- key in yes or no function questions. I have owned two of these (the first was destroyed by a dog after being dropped in the yard) and this problem existed on both.
In comparison to Franklin's equivilent product, I would say that the Franklin translator has far superior information but that the device is more poorly built. The Franklin translator has a rather flimsey cover. The button's are soft in operation, and you can't tell by feel if the device has accepted the keypress. The display is somewhat hard to read, but it does display far more information including examples, contextual information, and various forms of a word.
I highly recommend the Seiko translator so long as the user is aware of it's limitations. You will still have to use your dictionary to decide which option is correct for your purpose. But I love the Seiko for its small size, ease of use, and toughness. I can carry it with me on my job, and use my free time to carry out drills.
Quick, Simple, and Effective.......2001-02-19
I really like this product because in addition to being an advantage over a big, bulky, written dictionary, it's easy to use and has effective results. It not only can tell you the translation of words from spanish to english or from english to spanish but can also conjugate verbs. It gives quizzes about verb conjugation and vocabulary; it also offers quizzes for commonly used SAT words. I must stress how easy it is to use. I can't even use my sewing machine but i figured out how to work this in not even an hour!
