Sangean WR-2 Digital AM/FM Tabletop Radio, Walnut

Product Description

The Sangean WR2 brings distant AM and FM stations to your door step through Sangean's advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry. The wood enclosure is acoustically balanced and the enhanced frequency response, front firing speaker provides rich, room filling sound. The acoustic bass compensation and 7 watt amplifier give this small radio a truly big sound. (Stereo FM is fed to the earphone jack). Advanced features include: large backlit LCD display, clock with alarm (radio or buzzer), bass compensation, auxiliary input jack, stereo headphone jack, 10 memory presets, F type antenna jack and RDS. Preset and clock values are automatically saved up to 30 minutes during power interruptions. Additionally, the WR2 comes with a full-featured infra-red remote control!

The WR2 has some very advanced features. The Radio Data System (RDS) displays short text messages on applicable FM stations. The upcoming Enhanced Other Network (EON) is also supported providing traffic information in some areas. The auto-clock-set function will derive the current time from the RDS signal of your local FM station (if you have RDS in your area). The clock may be set for 12 or 24 hour format. When rotating the volume control, the volume level (1-60) will be displayed. If you tape the the volume control once it becomes a full range Treble Control. Two taps converts it to a full range Bass Control. The tuning steps may be set to 9 or 10 kHz on the AM band and 50 or 100 kHz on the FM band. The radio will continue to run 6 minutes during a power failure and preset information will retained for about one hour. The back lighting may be set at 3 different levels of brightness, or turned off. Amazon.com Product Description

Boasting an acoustically balanced wooden enclosure and an enhanced front-firing 3-inch speaker, the Sangean WR-2 tabletop radio offers the sound and features of a living room system in a cabinet that fits conveniently in a bedroom, kitchen, or garage. Any discussion of the WR-2 begins with its walnut-finished wooden housing, which is rich in both appearance and tone. The cabinet's front surface features the speaker on the left side, a series of intuitively placed control buttons toward the bottom, and a generously sized LCD display in the middle with three brightness levels. More importantly, the cabinet teams with the 7-watt amplifier and the acoustic bass compensation system to add warmth and depth to the audio. Complementing the housing is Sangean's advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry, which picks up distant AM and FM stations and reproduces them with unmatched clarity, making music and even talk programs come alive.

Even though the WR-2 is advertised as an AM/FM radio, it offers much more than a standard digital tuner, including a Radio Data System (RDS) that displays short text messages on applicable FM stations, along with support for the Enhanced Other Network (EON) and its traffic information (available in certain regions). And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.

A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (ideal for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I just bought my third Sangean WR-2.......2007-05-25

I bought one for my kitchen, then I got one for my parents, and today I just bought another one for me. I'm very happy with the radio sound, the features and the tuning sensitivity. The display is adjustable for both the on and off modes--an interesting and useful feature. It does take a bit of understanding to set the radio up and that could probably use a bit of improvement so I'd only give the ergonomics 4 stars. The first one I bought was the piano white, I got the walnut for may parents. Both are beautifully made--and heavy radios. Sound is excellent. I also own the Boston Receptor, Tivoli Songbook, Eton Sound 100. These are all good radios, but this one towers over the rest. It's also the least expensive which still surprises me.

4 out of 5 stars Dispaly issues.......2007-05-17

Excellent sound, excellent receiver. But, I bought the unit for a bedroom where it would be used as a clock and occasional alarm in addition to a radio. From its position, across the room, the dispaly was either way to bright, or not bright enough to see the display. And the digits of the time dispaly are not bold enough to be seen at any distance easily. It was necessary to buy a $10. digital alarm clock for our time/alarm purposes. Summary: Great piece of gear, the dispaly may not meet everyone's needs.

3 out of 5 stars Good--Because Most Radios are so Terrible.......2007-04-24

Too bad radios have gotten so poor. They make this radio seem better than it deserves

It is a "tabletop radio" and it works pretty well. Very decent mono sound comes out the speaker. It will tune major FM local stations. It is a fair price. I was hoping I would be able listen to any local FM station (various college stations, etc.), but I can't, the radio circuitry isn't good enough. If you want to tune your favorate big station, use the power button, volume control, maybe even turn up the volume high enough to hear in the next room, it will work great and is easy to use. If you want to listen to an FM station from out of town, this is not a good choice.

Note it has clock radio features, but be careful. For a clock radio, this unit has wonderful sound, however, the user interace is terrrible--it has two rows of uniform buttons that look cool but are poorly labeled and have obscure function. It is important that a clock radio, which one uses when half asleep, be easier to use.

The LCD panel has terrible contrast and turning up the brightness to make it easier to read will make your bedroom pretty bright and still not be very legible. We have a crappy clock radio sitting on top of the WR-2, we read the time (very easily) off the crappy radio.

Other reviewers have been enthusiastic with this model. I think that is because FM radios have gotten so terrible. We have a Sony shower radio, and the two big local NPR stations tune in "barely" and "not really" (respectively). Compared to that, yes, this radio is great. But radios can work much better. I had hoped this would have. (Note, I haven't really used the AM function.)

I AM pleased I bought it, but is isn't as good as I had hoped.

5 out of 5 stars Just a clock radio?.......2007-02-09

I took the time on line to read what other reviewers wrote about this particular radio and some other brands. I chose this over another product even though they seemed about the same. This radios had only one complaint, was the blue light. The other radio, people had complained about setting up the clock times.
The blue light has not been a problem b/c we placed this in our bathroom where it could be listened to while getting ready for work, etc.
We have a difficult time with reception at our house due to signal towers on another foothill near us and for some products, like cell phones, and some television cable companies, they do not always work well here. So I was concerned that may be an issue with this radio. It not only works great but I have to agree with other reviewers that the sound is wonderful. It holds up to our other more expensive radio. I would definately recommend this product to others who are looking for great sound.

5 out of 5 stars Super sounding alarm clock.......2007-02-03

This clock is just what I was looking for. The only thing that I would have wanted was stereo speakers. But the other one that I was looking at (boston) really didn't have enough bells and whistles and the sound was much to bassy. I do find it hard to see the clock compared to others.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent receiver.......2007-12-21

I bought this for the RDS feature as I needed it for a project I was working on, and have been very impressed with this radio.

It is extremely sensitive and selective, and picks up even weak stations with ease. This is a plus as most newer receivers are very weak and/or unselective, picking up the "image" of nearby stations making listening unpleasant.

The audio quality is amazing, with a warm, rich sound from the small speaker. I was shocked at how such a room-filling sound can come from this little box!

The display is bright, gorgeous, and readable even from across the room. The RDS feature is wonderful, and this radio even offers the "Alternate Frequency" option to find other other stations in the area that are carrying the same signal (like FM translators for non-commercial stations).

The radio is very well built, sturdy, and easy to use.

If you are looking for a desktop radio that sounds and receives great, you can't go wrong here!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT RADIO BUT..........2007-01-03

Overall a very nice radio w/good sound and looks but it didn't do what I wanted: I wanted to use it w/a timer so it would go on/off automatically. I didn't realize that being digital, using it w/a timer would wipe out the settings. Rather than return it, I gave it to a family member and bought a Tivoli Audio Model One which isn't digital and which doesn't lose the settings when used w/a timer.

4 out of 5 stars Sangean WR-2.......2006-11-11

The WR-2 is a superb radio receiver both in terms of AM sensitivity and FM selectivity. I am very satisfied, also, with its audio performance. The WR-2's display leaves alot to be desired. It is hard to see and Sangean should consider using LED's in place of the technology currently employed. I would rate the box as a 4+ and will recommend it to my friends, as long as they do not have to view the display very often.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Table Radio With Remote Control.......2006-07-19

I'm an electronics nut and I love my radios. Recently I've owned the Bose Wave Radio CD, Sony ICF-M1000, Tivoli Model Two with Subwoofer and now this Sangean WR-2. I loved the Bose for many of it's features but the tuner wasn't as good as it should have been for a radio in this price bracket. Next I tried the Tivoli and although it sounded much better than any of these other radio's bar none it too had a terrible tuner. It required constant re-tuning every few minutes. I wish it had come with a digital tuner that wouldn't drift because I would have kept it. I then bought the Sony ICF-M1000 and although it has a superb tuner it lacks important features such as memory presets and a remote control. Unhappy with the Sony I decided to try the Sangean. All I can say is WOW! This radio has all the features that I've been looking for. It's very attractive and the sound quality is fantastic. I had to adjust the bass of the radio because it was a little "boomy" but once I had that set I was in heaven. The tuner picks up the weakest stations with ease and the LCD display is clear and concise. It also display's the song title and artist. This radio even has the ability to display traffic information. The remote control is the size of a credit card and it's a full function remote. To sum it all up, get this radio. You will be amazed by the sound and with all the features it can't be beat. NONE of the other radios that I have owned has offered as much value for the money and sounded this good and remained in the sub $150.00 price range.
