Good product - horrible customer service.......2007-12-18
I purchased one of these clocks and was pleased. I decided to purchase two more as gifts. After placing the order, the distributors of the clock - ANTONLINE cancelled my order with no explanation. I emailed them directly over a week ago and have received no response. This is not a good position to put me in given I was planning to give these out as gifts. I will not recommend a product from a company that leaves you guessing as to whether they really want to sell their product or not.
Great clock and I love the projection on the ceiling.......2007-12-12
I've had several projection clocks and this is the best one yet. The ceiling display is huge (almost funny). The clock set itself to the correct time instantly (after a slight time zone adjustment) and with the battery backup even kept the correct time after a power failure.
I only wish it had a remote temperature sensor.
projection clock.......2007-11-15
We love this clock. I'm significantly near-sided and can see the time on the ceiling. It's great.
Great clock.......2007-10-23
Very nice clock. Projected time light is very suttle. No problem with too much light. Easy to start and no problem with it afterward.
bad projector.......2007-10-04
I liked the looks of this model, and the big numbers on the clock, but the projection had a mind of its own! It worked fine the first two nights - after that it would sometimes turn on, sometimes not - if I got it on, then it might go off in a hour or so, and maybe come back on several hours later. After almost a week it just quit completely - nothing would get it on! My husband told me not to buy an Emerson! I should have listened to him - then I wouldn't have had to return it. Don't waste your money - buy a better quality brand even if it cost a lot more!

Excellent clock radio.......2007-11-13
I'm a bit neurotic about these things, and spent a LONG TIME researching clock radios online before settling on this one. It has ALMOST everything I could want.
The best feature is that the times for the two alarms are prominently displayed on the screen, all the time. No more compulsive checking before bed to make sure that the alarm is set for the right time. I also like that you can pre-set each alarm to ring on just weekdays, just weekends, or every day; if you keep to a regular schedule, you really don't need to change anything from day to day.
Regarding the snooze feature: I was a bit worried that the "wave sensor" would be too sensitive, and that I would end up snoozing when I didn't mean to, but so far this really hasn't been a problem. You need to wave your hand pretty deliberately for it to snooze. Also, while you're snoozing, there's a blinking light to remind you that the alarm is not turned off, which is very helpful.
Regarding the tuner: I was surprised to see that this radio has an old analog dial-style radio tuner, rather than a digital tuner. It makes it a bit tricky to find the station you want, but it does tend to stay put much better than other radios. My last one would drift pretty heavily.
There are really just a few things I'm not crazy about:
1. The snooze timer is not adjustable. Each snooze is 9 minutes. Personally, I prefer 7. Many other clock radios on the market today have adjustable snooze, but not this one.
2. No atomic clock. It uses that "SmartSet" business, which is basically just factory-set with a very strong battery. But if it does ever get the wrong time, you'll need to set it by hand. Adding atomic clock capability would make it just about perfect.
3. No digital tuning, but as I said above, it's really not a big deal.
4. The display doesn't prominently show the weekday/weekend option for each alarm. Let's say alarm #1 is set for 7:00, on weekdays only. The display will always show the 7:00 part, but you need to press a button to see which days the alarm is set for (weekdays, weekends, or both). It would be nice to add another indicator -- a light meaning "this alarm WILL go off tomorrow", for example. If you don't change the settings too often though, this isn't much of an issue.
Overall, this radio is highly recommended!
Finally a keeper!!.......2007-09-21
My husband and I went through 4 other alarm clocks before we settled on this one. This alarm clock provided everything that was missing in each of our previous alarm clocks. It has a large easy to read from across the room display (but can be dimmed or shut off and then on again w/a wave of the hand), has two separate alarm settings which you can set for weekdays only, weekends only, and weekdays and weekends also w/buzzer,or radio which each of the two alarms can be set to individual preference. Both alarms are displayed constantly underneith the time (which is suprisingly reasuring feature to have) and my husband likes that the alarm shut off button (radio on/off) is a big round button off to the very left side of the alarm which allows him to turn the alarm off every morning without first putting his glasses on and then hunting for the off button. I love it that once you tap the off button, it turns the alarm off for the day and then automatically resets itself to wake me up again the next day. I also have the option to not shut the alarm off and listen to the radio for an hour as I get ready for work, after which time it will shut itself off until the next day again. All in all a very good buy and well worth the money!!
Don't be Fooled.......2007-09-07
Smartset clocks have a lot of WOW factor. However, don't be fooled. These are not "Atomic" clocks that keep very accurate time. In fact, these clocks are not set by anything external. They are set at the factory and have a long life backup battery that keeps the clock running. When you plugh it in, the display goes through a visual setting process that looks cool. However, these clocks run fast, slow, etc. Nothing actually syncs the time like clocks called "atomic clocks". When these clocks run fast or slow, you have to reset them manually.
If you are looking for accuracy, SmartSet Technology clocks are NOT what you want.
not bad, could be better.......2007-06-17
This clock radio has a lot of nice features, but there are also some quirks and Emerson may have a problem with quality control. Nice features: automatic time setting (but who really believes we will have the same daylight savings time system for another 100 years?), dual alarms each with 7/5/2 day settings, 2-level display that's not too bright. I thought the snooze control activated by passing one's hand in front of the clock would be nice 'til I sat up in bed and the radio shut down - it's too sensitive. Radio does not pull in very well at least the station I like to listen to.
First one I got had some LED elements that did not illuminate. Amazon shipped a replacement FAST - kudos to Amazon - and the replacement had a small defect too, tho not worth pushing Amazon again. (One of the alarms won't show "off," even when it is off.)
Perfect.......2007-05-26
I really like this clock radio. The numbers are large and colorful and the radio is quite acceptable. Not concert hall but good. The clock lights up only when you set off a sensor such as waving your hand near the face. But my cat and bed sheets also do it and it is pretty senstive so the clock display sometimes comes on unrequested. Not a major problem. I like it. I would recommend it; it's fun.

poor radio.......2007-12-03
I currently have an old Emerson Research that does not adjust to daylight saving time since Congress changed the dates and I was looking to upgrade. I returned this item because I could not tune the radio station that I have listened to for over 25 years. I will stick with the older model that allows me to hear the radio station that I like.
I would have rated the item zero stars but the web site would not allow me to do that.
good value.......2007-12-02
This seems like a good value so far. I haven't used the alarms yet, but the radio sounds adequate (for talk radio) and the two-setting switch for dimming works fine. I find the lower setting too low for our daylit room, but the bright setting works fine all the time for me. The buttons seem sturdy enough. It is slightly cumbersome to do the settings, but heck I don't change them very often so it's not a big deal at all. Definitely easy to read display and a good compact product.
Great for the Price.......2007-10-14
I didn't even realize this is an "atomic" clock, until it set itself almost immediately when I plugged it in. Got this for my son, so can go to sleep to music. He had no problem learning the controls as a 10 year old. Nice big number display as well.
Slow.......2007-08-22
This seems to be a good product with one exception. Its sets the time four minutes slow. You can adjust the time to the correct time so what good is the built in timer?
great clock, will work well for me.......2007-05-01
I got this clock as a gift, and could care less whether it sets itself or not, I've been setting clocks since I could walk, not a big deal. Most older clocks have battery back ups, so this is not a new feature.
The thing that makes this clock worth the price even without the smart set is the alarm settings. Dual alarm, and can be set for weekdays, weekends, and a couple other settings. So if you are like me, and have different schedules on the weekends you can set one for the weekdays, and one for weekends. bright display, suprisingly good sound, a good everyday clock, worth the price, whether it sets itself or not. Setting itself is a nice feature though. As many others have explained, this is not an atomic clock, nor does it advertise itself to be. Yes, it is a "Self Setting" Clock, pre-set at the factory defaulted to Eastern Standard time in the USA (Mine was 2 minutes behind my actual atomic clock). The set up is easy enough, plug it in, it set's itself, then press the time zone up or down for the time zone you are in, then forget about it for several years. This new version does have the correction for New daylight savings time settings (2007 versions). Again, check this out, even my mother (who is technologically challenged) loves this clock.

Bad Design.......2007-12-21
Huge problem with this design is the motion sensor idea. For this product it has 2 functions/uses, both of which are a terrible idea. First, you can set the clock light to High, Dim, or Motion/Off (not the exact name of this setting). The motion/off is so that after 10 seconds, the light goes off completely. If it detects motion, the light comes on. So the theory is that if you wake up in the middle of the night, you can just wave your hand in front of the clock and see the time. Not a bad idea at first thought. Except...it's a clock/radio designed to sit on your night stand right next to your bed!!! Everytime you move or roll over, the light comes ON (and in "high" mode...not dim mode). Strike One against this time.
Second function of the motion sensor is so you don't have to press a snooze button...you can just wave your hand instead. So now when your alarm goes off, if you just barely move...poof, sleep mode. And the sleep mode is like 10 minutes long! The manual specifically says it only does this when the "alarm" (buzzer) mode is used but that's not true at all. It does it even if you set the alarm to radio mode. Makes me wonder why they even bother to put a sleep button the radio. You can't use it because if you start to reach to hit the button, the motion detector puts it into sleep mode anyway. Strike two. Motion sensor...terrible idea for a product that sits right next to your bed.
The final strike is the touch-sensor you can plug your lamp into so you can just touch the pad on top of the clock to turn your light on/off. So now while you're fumbling around in the dark trying to your alarm off most of the time you end up hitting the light button and turn the lights on...which, if you have a 'significant other' that doesn't get up at the same time, is NOT a good thing. Especially a S.O. that is grumpy in the a.m. to start with. :-) Strike three for this product. I've had it 3 days and it's got to go...returning back to Amazon tomorrow (if I don't oversleep because I barely moved and put my alarm into sleep mode again)
Great Alarm Clock, Easy to Use, Lamp Control a Big Plus .......2007-08-27
Great Alarm Clock: Has all the standard features you would expect in an alarm clock. Being able to select which days for each of the 2 alarms is a nice feature. The big display is easy to read at night without wearing my glasses. Form factor is nice. Unlike a previous reviewer, I've had no problems with the radio.
Easy to Use: Sets itself the first time, 2 Alarms Easy to Set Up. It has heat/motion sensor so you don't have to touch a snooze button, just wave your hand in front of the clock face and you're in snooze mode.
Lamp Control: Plug in any lamp up to 150 W (no fluorescent bulbs). The lamp control button dims the lamp bulb up or down. The button is big, so you can find it half asleep and you don't have to "push down" on the button to get it to work. The lightest touch is all that is needed.
Overall, this clock was much better than I expected. Lot's of thoughtful touches were put into the design of this alarm clock. I'm thinking about getting another one for my guest bedroom.
Great Clock - Terrible Radio.......2007-06-14
I've had this clock radio for several years. If you want to self setting clock, buy it. If you want a descent clock radio, keep looking. The self setting clock is fantastic and the dual alarm feature is nice. However the radio is absolutely terrible. It is difficult to tune because the tuning knob is tiny and it is impossible to to see the few station frequency numbers that are printed in tiny numbers on the dial. So you have to guess what station it is on and wait for the station to say its call letters. For some reason the radio will not stay in tune, so every two or three days I have to re tune it. The latest issue is the volume control which is cutting in and out so it is about to go.
Life it too short to use something so aggravating so I'm going to replace this with a Sangean WR-2.
Also, the sound quality of the Emerson is poor, but I expected that.

Great item!.......2007-09-20
I can't believe the bad reviews for this! We love ours! We have never had a problem with it. Works great. Sound quality is very good. Features are excellent. We're buying another for my daughter!
Ugh.......2007-07-30
CD Player Died.
CD Play Button didn't always work.
Display is way too bright even on low.
Sound quality bad even for a Clock Radio.
Bad Design.......2007-06-15
The alarm would not shut-off for 8 hours, it has to be the worse design of product that requires you to keep a reference manual by it side, in order to operate. The secret functions have no labels at all. It is a design that is counter-intuitive.
Do not get buy it at all.
Does NOT Work for Daylight Savings Time - March 2007.......2007-03-12
This product does not work as advertised. It does not automatically update itself for Daylight Savings time for March 2007.
Emerson's technology is NOT based on the 'Atomic' clock technology, which does update itself based on the low frequency radio transmission signal from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Fort Collins, Colorado. (The NIST sends an accurate time signal across the continental United States)
All of our other clocks in our house that were not Emerson's technology did change for Daylight Savings time on March 2007 based on receiving the low frequency radio transmission from NIST's.
To fix this problem, you have to manually change the time zone feature on the clock. Then in a couple of weeks you will have to again reset the time zone back to your actual time zone when the computer chip finally does activate itself for Daylight Savings time.
Display is too bright!!.......2007-01-04
We received this product as a gift. Setup was automatic, and seemingly very accurate. The CD player mechanism is louder than some, but hey, I want to be woken up as we use it as an alarm clock! Other than CD seek noise, the mechanism seems quiet. The dual alarm feature replaces another clock we had, also with dual alarms, but its nice that this clock is day sensitive so you can make weekday/weekend alarm schedules work. In reading other reviews, it appears this clock has been on the market a couple of years, its possible that Emerson has improved some aspects of it. Our clock has a "C" trailing the model number: CKD5809C.
My main problem with this product is that the display is TOO BRIGHT!! Even with the switch set to the dim/low mode, the clock display lights up our bedroom so much that it disturbs my sleep. I prop a book in front of the display, but plan to buy some dark plastic film to attach to the front of the clock to mute the display.
If you like to sleep in a dark or very dim room, do not buy this product.

I purchased this itsm in August of 2006, and less than seven months later, it does not even work!
Ironically enough the day that it ceased to work was the day it was the day the early day light savings took effect.

This is a great clock.......2007-12-14
I've had this clock for two years, and bought one for my mother as well.
My power went off in the middle of the night last night, and I fell asleep peacefully after reminding myself that the clock would keep my alarm settings and reset itself when the power was restored. It was, and the Emerson clock woke me up on schedule. I used to have alarm failures constantly, but with dual weekend and weekday alarms, I haven't had to change a thing, and power blips (which we have constantly here) have never caused me to worry. This is a great product-- I only wish the smart set technology was in my coffee maker too.
AMAZING!.......2007-10-28
This clock is so amazing! It's smarter than me! I came in today thinking it was 11:45 because my stupid cell phone told me so, but my fantastically smart alarm clock told me otherwise! The time changed and my clock knew it before I did! AMAZING!
A Shame It Can No Longer Set Itself.......2007-10-28
I bought this clock about two years ago and then they go and change the day the time changes occurs so now my clock changes the time on me a week early so now I have to set the clock manually in addition to remember when the time changes used to occur so I don't get messed up on time...I mean what the heck is the point then? I know they didn't foresee such a change but the changes forces me to buy a new clock if I want to have a working self setting clock? Ridiculous!
Other than that glaring flaw, however, the clock is good. I enjoy the dual alarms so in case I sleep through or in a "sleep induced haze" turn off one I can have a back up make sure I'm awake...hopefully.
Love it!!.......2007-09-24
I love this alarm clock - and seriously, who says that about an alarm clock. I bought it about 2 years ago when we found the need for 2 alarm clocks (one on each side of the bed). Hubby got my old one and I got this one. I love it - OK, so now that the daylight savings time has changed you have to actually set the clock (at least mine has to be set), but I love the fact that you have 3 options for setting the alarm - M-F, S/Su or every day. Works great because I never have to remember to set the alarm. After hubby forgot to set the alarm (again) this morning, I'm buying another one for his side of the bed.
My only gripe is that the volume is very touchy and the quietest setting is still pretty loud, but that might just be me.
