Amazon.com Product Description
Get in the game with the plug-and-play Sirius Sportster 4 satellite radio receiver, which sports a new slim profile while still maintaining the same great features for which the Sportster series is known. Just like other Sirius-compatible receivers, the Sportster 4 offers a large, easy-to-read display, a rotary tuning knob, and accessible buttons, but now moves seamlessly into your car, home, or boombox. More significantly, the Sportster 4 maximizes the listening experience of Sirius radio's broad sports lineup, with the ability to decode the incoming Sirius digital-quality signal from more than 120 music, news, and sports channels. It's also easily transportable, and thanks to the bundled car kit, lets you listen to your favorite satellite radio programs while driving.
An easy-to-read, six-line display tells you the channel name and number, category, artist name, song title, and time simultaneously. The receiver also lets you program up to 30 presets of your favorite streams, as well as search by stream, artist name, song title, or category. And with a quick press of the One-Touch Jump button, you can instantly switch between the traffic and weather reports for your city or any of the other music, news, or entertainment channels. Other programming details include an S-Seek function that stores your favorite artists and songs and alerts you when one is playing on any of the music channels, direct station tuning via the numeric buttons, and a channel lock option. Time functions, meanwhile, include an onscreen clock, alarm, and sleep timer, as well as a program alert that allows the unit to switch to a preprogrammed stream at a selected time.
The Sportster 4 really earns its stripes, however, with its variety of enhanced features designed specifically for sports lovers. The Game Alert feature prompts you when your favorite NFL or other sports teams are playing on Sirius. The Game Zone lists all of your favorite teams in one virtual category and lets you select a different team from each of the various sports leagues, including the NFL, NBA, NHL, and college sports. And what sports fan could do without the Sportster's instant replay function, which lets you pause, rewind, and replay 44 minutes of live radio? As soon as you tune to a channel, the receiver automatically begins storing the audio for later playback.
The Sportster 4 also includes a built-in FM transmitter that sends Sirius radio programming to your vehicle's FM tuner, so you don't have to make a direct connection to enjoy the full array of channels. Simply set an empty FM frequency on your radio and tune the Sportster 4 to the same frequency. This function also works with other FM tuners, such as the one on your home stereo, but is easily paired with the car thanks to the bundled vehicle kit, which includes everything you need for listening to Sirius while driving. Components include a vehicle docking station, a suction cup mount, a vent mount, a DC power supply that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter, a roof-mount antenna, and mounting hardware.
Sirius satellite radio is a subscription service that provides more than 120 channels of programming, from digital-quality music to news, talk, and sports. It is available only in the lower 48 states--not in Alaska, Hawaii, or U.S. territories. The Sportster 4, which measures 4.5 by 2.9 by 0.6 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a one-year warranty.

Customer Reviews:
Great radio!.......2007-12-14
Overall, a great radio. I do not really care for too much sports, but like the large bright display, which is very convenient while driving. I also have a Starmate, which works well in the house, but I like this radio better for car use. Nice sound, easy to access controls (I'm always channel surfing), bright & easy-to-read display, and very easy installation (I did not use the FM modulator). Just to add one "complaint", I would like an extended suction cup mount.
Looking at other reviews, it looks like last year's models were below par. Make sure you note the dates on any poor reviews before you take their comments to heart.
One flaw.......2007-12-03
Here is the condensed version...
The Sportster 4 is a sexy unit ('bout the size of a deck of cards held sideways) and the features are great. The one flaw is that it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to buy the fm relay adapter. That really disappointed me because here I am buying the unit (which is not cheap to begin with) and it's labeled plug and play. Well, you can plug it in, but it sure won't play because you'll get a signal is almost non-existant and a sound that rivals two dixie cups and a string. I wish Sirius had been up front and let it be known that the adapter ($18-$30) is a necessity. Either that or just include the adaptor itself in the package and tack on the extra cost. I would have gave the unit a perfect review, but I won't because of the fm adaptor issue. Having said that... when the Geek Squad at Best Buy installed the fm adaptor, it was like the heavens opened up and the sun was shining again. It's a beautiful thing- NO INTERFERENCE and crystal clear sound.
Don't buy if you need the FM!!!!!.......2007-11-16
I had an older model, $20 starmate that someone smashed my window and took. I was very satisfied with my Sirius subscription so I decided to splurge a little and get a better model. I have a factory stereo so I don't have an audio-in jack and I must rely solely on FM. This thing is nearly completely worthless using FM. How I pine for my lost starmate! I live in the middle of nowhere and have a wide open band but there is still annoying static even though I have started carrying the thing in my lap using myself as an antenna. I doesn't work on ANY channel - not one. To me it is a $200 doorstop.
Awesome Satellite Receiver.......2007-11-02
I could not be more satisfied with this sirius receiver. Easy to use...good looks...it get complimented anytime someone sits in the car. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a good satellite service and receiver. Mike
haven't listened to regular radio since.......2007-10-24
I have owned my sirius Sportster 4 for about a year now and I love it. I never get in my truck without turning it on. The variety of shows and music to listen to blow regular radio out of the water. I have only two gripes about this radio. First one is that the reception has some dead spots, but those last less than a couple of seconds. The second is that when there is a lot of lightning or electrical activity in the clouds, the reception is a little hit or miss. I don't blame the radio so much as I blame the fact that Satelite radio is still developing. Remember that DirectTV had the same issues and now they are number 1.
If you live in the city, you may need to get the wired FM relay adapter. I live in Miami and there are very few radio stations that are not being used in some way on my way to and from work. This relay essentially turns off your car's antenna and lets the Sirius receiver come in loud and clear.
Anyway...I love my radio. It's the only thing I listen to. I highly recommend this one to anyone that is looking for an alternative to regular radio.

Never buy a sportster.......2007-07-31
Never buy a sportster- I'm on my second and it's horrible. My first worked well for a while and then it kept having trouble "detacting the antenna" I would have to jostle the wires until it decided to detact it. So I brought it back to the place I bought it (luckly I bought the extended warranty)- I've had this new one for less than a year and it's doing the same thing- I treat it VERY well- I don't take it in and out of my car- it ust sit there- I love sirius and reccommend it to everyone just DON'T BUT A SPORTSTER.
Great Unit.......2007-05-14
This unit was shipped brand new in box in a timely fashion. Works Great.
I've Never Been Happier, but..........2007-05-12
What's not to love about the Sirius SP-TK2 Sportster Replay Satellite Radio with Car Kit.
Terrestrial radio will always have its place, but after having Sirius for 8 months, I will never go back and appreciate this unbelievable service.
No more scanning for programming on the road. There are so many choices and most are basically commercial free. The Sportster has a 40 minute cache, so if you step out of your car and keep the unit on, you can rewind and pick up where you left off. I believe leaving the unit on over night will drain the battery. Beware.
My unit is installed on the windshield/dashboard. Set up was easy. Running the antenna wire from the dash to the trunk was the only obstacle, but not a deal breaker. It's a simple installation.
Esthetically, it would be nice to have the unit built in. This was not an option for me.
I purchased a Cigarette Lighter Splitter (google search) so I can charge my cell phone at the same time.
The reason for 4 stars...
Sirius customer service is the absolute WORST. THE WORST. In my past experiences: They don't know the product. They can't assist you on installation. They're uneducated. They can't answer questions. They know how to ask for your name and account number. Beyond that, good luck. Put aside some time to wait on hold and be prepared to ask for a supervisor.
Howard has never been better. CNN. Traffic. Weather. Any format of music at a touch of a button. I promise, you'll never go back. The service is worth every penny.
Best gift ever.......2007-04-07
We bought this for my brother in law for Christmas, and he called to say it was probably the best gift he's ever received. He travels a great deal, and he absolutely loves having access to good programming all the time. This was a great price for the perfect gift.
Sirius has the worst customer service .......2007-02-14
This unit is a piece of garbage. The first unit I got lasted about 6 months. After waiting 2 months, I got the replacement unit which lasted 1 month. And, you guessed it, another 2 months for a replacement, which I haven't even opened yet. I am waiting to receive the boombox that I also had to send back. It has been almost 8 months and I still have not seen it. I have over 10 hours of phone time with customer service, and nobody can seem to figure out how to get a replacement unit to me.
For poor turn-around time, and absolutely wretched customer service, I am not going to renew my service, or recommend anyone else sign up for new service!

Awesome device.......2007-11-16
I've been using this for my car and it works great. i hardly get any cut outs except in the hills. I have very Satisfied with this product
what a piece of crap !.......2007-06-18
Lets see, SUCTION mount does not hold on days that are too hot, too cold, too humid, too dry etc..(get the point ?) Plastic cradle corrodes and breaks. CHEAP magnetic antenna does not work worth a damn. Wire from antenna breaks after a couple months. And the best part of all, Sirius does NOT carry parts and you have to buy a NEW receiver and then go through customer service (and "hold" and "Hello" my name is "Bob"/Sanjay" etc) to get old receiver deleted and new receiver up and running...Sirius has made a few bucks and now they don't give a damn. Heck just listen to Stern. He and Robin GOT PAID and now just "phone it in"....They are boring...
Same problem here.................2007-01-03
I installed this system for a good cutomer of mine and experienced the same problem. After only several months the "antenna not detected" started up. Went with a Shakespear marine unit since it was going on the roof of an RV. I think they should supply the cradle and mount and let the customers choose whatever antenna their installation requires. I tried to mount the original antenna on the inside of the windshield with a suction mount I found. But with Sirius units the antenna really should be on the roof and the original antenna just can't take it.
Antenna corrodes.......2006-06-29
I have had the sportster replay installed in my explorer for about 7 months now, and a few weeks ago I had problems with my antenna. I kept getting antenna not detected errors, however sometimes the signal would come through very weakly. After checking the antenna I found that the plastic piece that connects to the magnetic antenna was very corroded. When I picked it up and played with it a little bit, pieces of the plastic began to flake off. It was pretty obvious that the connection wasn't going to be working properly like that. Sirius recommends that this antenna be installed on the roof of your car, it's even highly magnetized so it won't be blown off. It should be weatherproofed better.
Be warned: designed to malfunction and Sirius will not honor the warranty........2006-06-11
Mine is only 5 months old, with 7 months remaining on an alleged 12 month warranty. Lasted 5 months then one day radio suddenly could no longer acquire a signal. Checked antenna connection on back of docking station - OK. Checked antenna wire for nicks, cuts or kinks - OK. Popped radio into another docking station and it had no trouble acquiring a signal. Finally, pried open back of antenna to have a look...completely corroded inside, no WAY it could be transmitting a signal to the docking station in that condition. Sirius recommends that the antenna is installed outside the vehicle for optimal reception (there is even a high-powered magnet on the bottom for this purpose) and then supplies you with an antenna that can't take more than 5 months of weather!
Contacted Sirius via phone and e-mail. Their final word after literally a WEEK of runaround: "Sorry, the warranty doesn't cover the antenna." They said they were "happy to help!" and directed me to a website where I can PURCHASE a new antenna at roughly the cost of a whole new docking station. Worst customer service I have ever encountered. Expect hassles, frustration and perpetual problem-ridden-equipment expenses.

Replay.......2007-07-31
I've had the same problem with my original sportster radio and the light flickering out. Thankfully mine was under warranty but unfortunately it took 3 mos to get my new radio from Sirius. They said it was due to alot of customers coming in and not enough radios to go out. Basically it was poor customer service and that's it. They gave me every excuse in the book. But I still love the radio and the stations. Sirius just needs to get their customer service in shape.
Unit having problems 14 months after activiation........2007-05-04
I am basing my review strictly on the hardware, and not the Sirius service. For the first 14 months, the unit worked great. I purchased the home kit, and have it tuned into my home stereo. I also purchased an outdoor antenna, to make sure the signal came in consistently.
In month 15, the backlit display started to (and still does) dim and flicker, especially when I was pressing buttons. Then, the lights behind four of the number buttons went out completely. Although the signal and reception is still working, it seems like the display light is failing.
Of course, Sirius warranty is only for a year, and they are unwilling to budge. I also called technical support, and they basically said there was nothing to be done, now that the unit is out of warranty. What is especially frustrating, is that this seems to be a known issue with these units, from what I can gather from reading posts at online Sirius forums. The soldering of certain connections was poorly implemented, and will eventually fail.
I like the Sirius service, but am not happy with the quality of this receiver.
Do your research!.......2006-02-09
I own a previous version of this model (the Sportster without the replay option).
There are two satellite subscription services--Sirius and XM. Over the last few months the two services have begun to diverge a bit and you should really compare the programming choices available. Sirius is, by most standards, more "hit based" in their music. If you listen to rock, pop, or even some of channels that play deeper cuts, you'll hear more recognizable hits and more repetition on Sirius. XM, even on their "hits" channels, plays deeper cuts from the various artists and appears to have less "repeats". If you like specific genres of rock (heavy metal, punk, new wave) Sirius has more dedicated channels for those choices than XM.
Sirius offers Howard Stern for those who care. They unceremoniously dropped Fox News in January, but they provide two NPR channels, one Public Radio International stream, two CNN streams, and relays of English shortwave broadcasts. XM offers Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, Fox Talk and a consolidated public radio stream grabbing programs from several sources. XM carries Air America, Sirius has a Talk Left channel with a variety of hosts. Both services carry CNBC, Bloomburg and BBC audio. Sirius adds BBC1 Rock, CBC1, and CBC3 alternative music. XM offers Canadian content, but not from the CBC.
Sports? Your choice. If its NFL football or NASCAR, go with Sirius. If its Major League Baseball, go with XM. If you like other pro sports or certain college divisions check out both and choose the one you like.
Audio quality on Sirius, while advertised as 100% digital comes across as an average sounding FM station. It is certainly not CD quality, and doesn't even come close to the digital sound you get from the "music" channels you find on cable or direct satellite TV systems. The sound quality on Sirius talk channels (Discovery Radio, Talk Right, Radio Classics) is very poor in many cases. If you own a typical car audio system lacking a true graphic equalizer (like the one in my Ford Expedition) you may find the audio distorted on these channels. The only fix is to choose one of the preset equalizer choices (such as "News"). It cures the distortion but clips the audio bandwidth. On the other hand, my Bose Wave system in my office handles all Sirius audio quite well, although Sirius music still sounds the same as FM radio on that unit.
The plug and play option is nice--I move between the office, car, and boombox with ease. Outdoors, the boombox receives quite well without having to contort the antenna. Be careful with either system in your office. In large cities both services provide earthbound relays for indoor reception. But for most of us, to hear Sirius in the office you will need access to outdoor mounting of the antenna, a drop ceiling where you can place the antenna in the attic, or one heck of a big window facing the path of Sirius's moving satellites!
The choices you'll find on satellite far surpass your FM radio. With the soon-to-be advent of HD FM, Sirius and XM may become less desirable options. For now however, they are both good choices for those who want more from their radio! I rate the service a "3" because the audio quality is not as advertised, and because the two services can cancel a channel or alter a music stream at their whim. For folks who invested hundreds of dollars in docking systems for Sirius and woke up to find Fox News, Air America, or their favorite music stream dropped or morphed, it can be a costly mistake, especially if you are forced to migrate to the rival service to hear your favorites.
Great choice if your looking for Sirius Satellite Radio.......2006-02-04
An enthusiastic 2 thumbs up for this unit!
I've had the Sportster for about a month now and I couldn't be happier. Let me elaborate...
1.)This unit has the advantage of 30 slots of memory for 30 different radio stations. All available at the click of a button on the unit or the remote.
2.)Pause/Rewind. You can pause any broadcast and then get up to 44 minutes playback. If you used the save feature you can also fast-forward to skip items your not interested in.
3.)You can save up to 20 song titles to memory. Anytime one of these songs in played anywhere on Sirius Radio you will be notified so you can listen if you want to.
4.)Good quality stereo FM sound that is uninterrupted unless you go through tunnels or behind buildings.
5.)All the NFL, NBA, NHL etc. All live and you can set up this unit to notify you when your team/broadcast begins. (And with the save feature you can listen to your team score that touchdown again and again.)
6.)Fully functioning remote. Actually this is the best way to change channels while in your car (the buttons on the unit are small and may be difficult to use safely while driving if the Sportster is on the car dash).
7.)Easy setup of antenna and suctioned holder (removable) for in car use. (Suction works great if moisten before applying.)
8.)There is a kit available to use the unit in your house.
* One important negative;
The magnetic antenna that attaches to your car hood or roof will scratch the paint IF you repeatedly remove it (for instance, to prevent theft while going into a store). I had to cover the bottom of the antenna with a sticky-back cloth tape to prevent direct contact with the paint of my car. (this did not cause problems with the antenna's magnetic function as the magnet is so strong it still stuck to the metallic surface with no difficulty)
All in all a satellite radio that I've enjoyed much more than I anticipated. For the extra bucks you get a lot of extra features, which, if you listen to a lot of radio, is a good value. Recommended!

Great radio and great service.......2007-12-17
I purchased the Sportster 5 about a month ago and it's the first sat radio I've owned. Out of the box, it comes with everything you need to install in your car. It's a breeze to install yourself for most people, unless you've never installed anything in your car before. If worse comes to worse, ask someone you know for help before you pay $50 to get it done. Don't use the FM transmitter if you can help it though - I've heard and read a lot of horror stories about them. My head unit didn't have a AUX input, but it did have a CD disk changer input in the back of the unit. I just purchased a cable that takes that disk changer input and converts it to an AUX input, for a direct connection. It works amazingly well.
Navigation is straight forward. There are some cool features like a thin profile, 15 different color combonations and a small remote control that's actually more useful than you might think because it allows friends or picky wives and/or girlfriends to change the channel without reaching across you. There's also Sports alert that will notify you when one of your favorite teams are playing (selectable in a menu) and the score will display even when you're listening to a music channel. You can store favorite artists and/or songs and the radio will alert you when a song or artist from your list is playing anyhere and anytime. The radio will also store 30 channel presets. There's also a function where you can pause and rewind music you've listened to up to 45 minutes, then fast forward.
Some complaints that I have are I wish the remote had a backlight. I also with there was a "previous channel" button. The antenna is also finicky sometimes when you drive under a bridge in traffic or through a McDonalds drive-thru, but it's bearable and a necessary evil. It doesn't always lose the signal, but I thought it's worth mentioning. The radio wouldn't be worth anything without the service, and I have to say that Sirius is excellent to say the least. It's worth every penny and I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Best Sirius Sportster Yet!.......2007-12-05
I upgraded to the Sportster 5 from the SIRIUS ST4-TK1 Starmate 4 Plug-and-Play Satellite Radio Receiver with Car Kit. I have to say the new Sportster 5 is the best radio they have released and far superior to the Starmate 4.
Sound quality is comparable between the two units. I choose not to use the FM modulator. I'm in the DC area and there are far too many strong radio stations. Plus, using the auxiliary jack provides all-around better audio quality.
The big improvement for this generation is the color display added to this very thin radio. Very nice looking and customizable for basic text and background colors. Text is clear and the screen provides plenty of information on the 6-line display. Makes a huge difference on legibility. The multi-color display also allows Sirius to display more text information without appearing to clutter the screen as much.
One of the innovations I particularly like is the "game-ticker" feature that has been added in addition to "game alert". The ticker places the score for your favorite game on the main display of the Sportster in color, regardless of whether you are tuned to the sports channel or not. So, you can monitor your game scores while listening to music.
On the downside it would be nice if you could choose a greater variety of display colors and different background images. Also, the menu and memory buttons are a bit cramped around the tuning knob and need to be spread out. But, this is a distinct improvement over previous models.
Note: Current radios are selling from various vendors for less than $160 w/o a rebate.
Decent Unit, Poor Customer Service.......2007-12-03
I got the radio 1,5 months ago and it died on me when I unplugged it from the power without turning the unit off for the first time. Warranty service told me I should have turned off the unit before unplugging it. However, my car provides constant power thru the lighter output. On the other hand, I know many cars don't do that and the power shuts off when the engine is turned off (thus if you don't turn off the unit before shutting off the engine, yours might burn too). Since that doesn't sound very possible, the reason why the unit completely dead cannot be what they told me it is (Mine might be a lemon in this case). Anyhow, the warranty service said they will ship a new one out in 24 to 48 hours, when I called 3 days later, they said it was back-ordered and won't be shipped until 2,5 more weeks and they didn't offer anything to have a temporary replacement.
I am not sure if that's a common problem or not but it died on me when I unplugged it.
Other than that, the unit is easy to operate, the remote is very handy, most of the screen colors are useful (you cannot read the titles on some color schemes), FM radio reception is working fine (but it also depends on the quality of your radio that's installed in your car, I'd say hard-wire the unit if you have the means).
Sirius advertises the radio as "100% commercial free" music, but beware, the entertainment channels (actually anything other than the music channels) are full of commercial that drives me nuts.
If you are spending a little too much time in your car, this radio is fine, but the customer service isn't.
