Difficult to Set Up but Well Worth It.......2007-12-03
I am definitely not an early adopter of new technologies. I purchased an IPod only a few months ago. However, what attracted me to the new Denon S52 is the idea of being able to listen to radio stations from around the world. As a young man, I loved staying up all night trying to pull in shortwave tropical band broadcasts. The second reason why I found the Denon to be so attractive is that I could dock my IPod to the receiver. I cannot think of anything more that I can ask of a radio.
I am replacing a Bose Wave Radio with the Denon S52. The beauty of the Bose Radio is that I plugged it in and it was ready to go. Starting the Denon S52up was a lot more complicated and well beyond my technical abilities. I am using the Radio at work and we have secure WiFi Network. I had to use the services of the company's System Administrator to set the radio up. In order to access the WiFi System, the radio needs the System's security code. Unfortunately, there was no way to download that information straight into the radio. The poor System's Administrator had to enter the 30+ characters by hand. It was a text messaging nightmare. With some distractions, it took him 15 minutes to load the characters into the radio.
Once it was set up, the radio turned out to do everything promised. The sound quality is as good as the Bose Radio. With the IPod sticking out of the receiver and the antenna protruding from the back, the Denon does not look nearly as attractive as the Bose. However, what I lost in style, I picked up in being able to listen to radio stations from around the world. If you are going to take the Denon to work, be prepared to do some favors for the System Administrator.

I bought this holder because the holders that came with my Delphi Skyfi 2 were as cheap as you could get.
I've been very surprised by this. The suction cup is very strong. I've never had any problems with it coming loose, nor can I easily remove it without releasing the air lock. The flexible metal bar is very sturdy, so it stays in whatever position you put it in. It comes with a couple options to hook it up to the radio. Either a plastic plate that you can screw onto the back of your radio or a "hook" that slides into the hole that most XM/Sirius radios have on the back.

Please do not buy this product it will fail as mine has making it an expensive mp3 player. Sirius tech support will finally tell you you are tol, buy a new radio.
If you are a life time subscription holder you will be out the $75.00 transfer fee, new radio, new docking stations. Sirius has no interest in waiving the transfer fee or offering a discount on a comparable radio.
Sirius is only out to make a huge buck off you, somebody has to pay Howard.
Have an xm player thats been through it and still works fine.
I'm now a firm believer in the saying "Sirius Sucks"
Great alternative to MP3 player.......2007-02-19
I really love my s50. I bought the home docking unit, which I think is a must for the s50. It records my favorite Sirius content, (which I happen to think is better than the XM content I have had before) over-night in the docking station with its tivo like functions. In the morning I pull it off its docking station and I have tons of content to listen to. I also use the included software to load my favorite pod casts to it. Some of the controls are clumsy, like if paused for too long it will automatically turn off and you lose your place in whatever program you were listening to and you have to fast forward to where you left off. It also automatically turns off when you disconnect it from its docking station, which is annoying if you drive to the gym and want to plug your earphones in and continue listening. To keep from accidentally hitting buttons, as a previous reviewer stated you just have to flip the button lock switch, like most MP3 players; not a big deal. If you are used to MP3 players, and are tired of searching for new music then downloading and transferring from your computer to your player, the s50 is a nice alternative. However, keep in mind that you cannot listen to live Sirius broadcasts when the s50 is not docked. All in all, this is a great way to take up to 50 hours of content with you. I really do recommend it. Taking Sirius shows on the go is very nice and my s50 has performed well over the last 4 months.
Great styling, many functions, needs some improvement.......2006-07-27
This unit is designed fairly decent. It get's a 10 for style and a 7.5 for it's functions. The portability of the device is great. You can record up to 50 hours of music but it must be connected to a dock to receive a signal, which is the devices major flaw. The unit can also be used as an MP3 player in which you can download songs from your computer. Good sound clarity and a nice color screen. In all it's a great unit but I hope sirius develops an addition for it becomes totally portable and able to record anywhere.

The S50 is a piece of crap. It is not a well thought out design. Having the controls on the side...bad idea. Every time I grab the device I push a button. If you are listening to a recorded program when the device is on the cradle and pull the device off the cradle the device turns off and you have to start all over again. The rewind and forward function...If you record a show that is 2 hours long and only want to listen to the last 10 minutes you'll need to slowly and carefully rewind through the whole show 10 seconds at a time. And don't double press the button because you'll jump to the next program. It Only records 2 hours at a time not 4 hours as advertised. Too many other problems to list, but these are the ones that bug me the most.

Kenko 420-800mm alright lens.......2007-06-03
I own this in the Canon EOS mount.. they are in fact all the same, just ships with a different T-mount adapter, and the 420-1600 just ships with a 2x teleconverter.
This is a very light weight lens, especially for its focal length, it has no aperture blades, it's completely empty on the inside, its like an old style hand telescope. When sources of strong constrast/light are coming toward the camera, expect heavy chromatic aberration, free of chromatic aberration in other situations.
However, I've found a particularly excellent use for this lens, which is taking great photos of the moon on a tripod with a shutter release cable on my Canon 30D.
Although be warned, the lens is very physically long, although light, it makes focussing extremely difficult, especially on a tripod, as there is no tripod collar, you attached the camera to the tripod, then when you zoom the lens all the way (linear pull zoom) the lens is over 30cm long (12 inches!), although light because its empty, its supported on the tripod from the camera base, so soon as you touch the lens or camera, or the focussing ring, the image in the view finder shakes like crazy while trying to focus, making it hard to focus on the most useful application with this lens... on a tripod.
You can only use this lens hand held in full day light, and if you're doing so you'll need a shutter speed of 1/500 sec to eliminate blur from your own movement (due to the massive focal length), 1/250 sec is the minimum for sharp shots I could personally get.
And shooting in daylight, whether hand held or tripod, you're going to want to use a 1A sky filter AND a polarising filter (or at least one of them) to increase colour and contrast, luckily this thing comes with a lens hood.
The top of this lens screws off easily, so you can keep the lens pieces clean, if they ever develop fungus, good thing about this lens is water wont damage it, as it doesnt even have aperture blades, just glass and coated metal.
Though since the tip screws off you could cut a circle out of some black card then a hole in the middle and insert it into the middle of the lens to create your own aperture to try and improve sharpness and increase depth of field, and reduce aberration and flare etc.
I hope this helps.
Also, forgot to mention that this lens has pretty good macro capabilities (in terms of enlargement in close focus objects with miniscule depth of field).

I am very new to photography and ordered this lens because it was cheaper and offered a better zoom than most. I quickly learned that lense price is directly related to the F factor or F stop and that the zoom capability is very minor. That being said I struggled at first in using the lens. I am using it with a Sony A100 DSLR camera. This type of lens is designed for shooting very slow moving or still objects with a really good try pod. The f8.6 means that the shutter timer needs to be slowed way down even in bright sunlight which also means that almost ant vibration or movement in the camera will result in a blurred image. Once I learned this I started getting some great shoots from a distance with it, however it isn't going to work to shoot surfing which is what I wanted it for. I can't fault the lens for my ignorance.
