Beware!.......2007-12-26
Do not buy this product! This unit will constantly lockup, then you have to wait for hours for the battery to drain as there is no way to reset it. This radio has been out for several months and XM still has not fixed the problems and most likely will never fix them. This is another example of a good idea implemented poorly.
When I bought this for my wife I took her skifi2 to use for myself. Now I feel bad for doing that because the skifi2 is a far superior product.
Worthless.......2007-12-23
I've had this unit for 6 months, and the last couple of months have been a nightmare. The unit locks up about 75% of the time on startup, and the only way to "fix" it is to allow the battery to die. The volume up/power button reset doesn't work. The screen displays "Scanning media 22.29," and won't go any further. I've seen suggestions to update the firmware, but when I attempted to do so, I found out I've already got the latest updates installed.
The buttons sometimes are slow to respond, if they respond at all. I don't like having to look at the unit while I'm trying to drive to make sure that it's doing what I anticipated. I like to be able to push the buttons while keeping my eye on the road. I've found myself in for a few surprises this way - for example, I've pushed 54 and wound up on channel 4 instead... oops. The directional buttons have the same problem.
I've also had the unit randomly do odd things such as change from vertical to horizontal display, and change the channel that it transmits on to the radio.
The unit seriously doesn't like the cold. It responds even more slowly and is much more prone to locking up.
I haven't even been able to successfully use my XM radio in the last two weeks. Unfortunately we paid for a year subscription, so I'm stuck with it. I would highly recommend going with a non-Delphi product. I'd have to say this is the most awful experience I've ever had with an electronic product.
How many bugs can this unit have?.......2007-12-14
I'm about to send back my second SkiFi to Delphi for a replacement. Here are some things that have gone wrong with the units I've owned:
1. Bad reception and repeated "Check Antennae" messages, even when standing in the middle of a field under a clear sky.
2. Screen will not light up when power button is pushed- guy on the phone gives "helpful suggestion" to push down volume and power buttons at the same time.
4. Radio comes on, but screen does not. After several attempts, this finally corrects itself.
5. Recorded songs skip and freeze. Seriously.
6. Screen freezes and will NOT unfreeze. As another poster has noted, you have to drain the battery to get it unstuck. Speaking of which...
7. Don't even bother to get this unless you get the extended battery or only intend to use it in the car. The standard battery lasts 30 minutes on Live XM.
8. Antennae Jack died on first unit after less than three months. Delphi will replace, but I lost a dozen songs I had recorded. Plus the hassle of returning stuff.
9. Again, I am about to send back my SECOND unit in less than four months (my first replacement started showing bugs before the first WEEK was up.)
An on-off switch would be really, really helpful, as the "Mode" button seems very tempermental.
Could be better, but still a great unit!.......2007-11-25
My unit seems to freeze up constantly, especially when playing MP3s. It is quite annoying. Once, the player froze up playing some of the recorded songs, and somehow forgot that I was a registered XM subscriber. I kept getting warnings that my license to play my recorded music would soon expire, even though I was connected to the XM Satellite. Eventually, the message went away (after a week or two), and I never did have a problem playing any of my music, other than an occasional reminder to subscribe if I wanted to continue to play my recorded music. This problem has only occured once.
The freeze ups, on the other hand, is almost guaranteed to happen just about every time I play MP3s, and about once a week when playing some of the recorded XM songs. It is frustrating, but I do still like the unit. At the time I purchased it, this was the only unit I could find that could "TiVO" my XM radio, which is a feature I could not live without! It's great to hear a new song on the radio that I like and be able to save it for future listening! No more "What was the title of that song???" and having to search the internet for lyrics to find the songs I like.
I only wish the screen was color, and the device could be a little more user friendly. I find myself having to "interact" with the radio more than I would like to when changing songs or radio stations, which is a distraction while driving. This may be more of a side effect to having a unit with so many features, and not necessarily a design limitation of the unit itself. I think a better screen, with color and better contrast, would help in this regard.
Humming Explained.......2007-11-25
We recently bought this unit on an incredible sale from Best Buy ($29.99--on clearance to make room for new models). We put the XM receiver on our dash board so as not to have to run wire out to the roof (we aren't using the FM option). This seems to pick up the XM signal just fine. We did have one problem--an unexplained humming when the unit was plugged into the auxiliary jack. We tried to swap audio cables, adjust different settings in the radio and in the xm receiver, but nothing worked. Eventually we dropped into a Best Buy with the Geek Squad team working back in the car audio section. The person we spoke with explained that if you have the battery charger plugged into your cigarette lighter while the unit is playing, it will produce interference and cause the loud humming. So--if anyone does not intend to get the radio hard-wired to to your car, keep this fix in mind.

Can you say Software Quality Assurance?.......2007-12-19
I've had my SKYFi3 for just a couple of days now, but I've spent a lot of that time reading reviews like this and talking to Delphi customer service trying to get the thing to work right.
Some of the problems I was having were solved by uploaded the latest firmware (ver. 1.19). However, this hasn't solved everything.
I too have had a problem with hangups. I just got a 1Gb microSD card for it, and now I have a whole new assortment of problems. For some strange reason, it almost never plays the song that I ask it to. It also has a nasty habit of stopping as soon as the backlight shuts off (usually 3-4 seconds after the song starts).
After reading these reviews I found that it's true that keeping the backlight on does SOMETIME prevent the hangups I was getting with recorded songs. That's minimally acceptable if you have the unit in a dock (i.e.- external power). The thing's a real power hog. I swear you can use it as a hand warmer with the backlight on.
The bottom line is that the firmware is not ready for primetime. That's sad considering how long this unit's been on the market. Many of the menus are not the least bit intuitive and the firmware is full of bugs.
Terrible Device, Horrendous Customer Service.......2007-11-01
Shortly after purchasing the unit, it began to malfunction. After it was turned on it would freeze in the startup screen. I looked through the instruction manual and there are no troubleshooting solutions to this problem. There is no a reset command procedure listed in the manual, and it would not turn off even when the power cable was disconnected. I was left with a useless piece of equipment for the remainder of the long car trip that I was on.
After returning home, I went online and found out that many other people who bought this product had the same problem, and also could not figure out a way to restart it. I upgraded the firmware (after letting it completely drain batteries and restart), but I still had the same problem. Other users have stated that they only experienced the freezing after installing the firmware upgrade. This leads me to believe it is a hardware problem. Only after contacting customer service, were they able to tell me how to restart the device (Volume+ and Mode at same time). However sometimes I have to restart the device 5 or 6 times before it starts working. I notice it freezes when the temperature is anything outside of 70-80 degrees, so even though it is a car stereo receiver you cannot leave it in your car.
The Delphi automated telephone system that answers customer service calls is horrendous. Once connected to a service representative, they were extremely nice, knowledgeable, and helpful, but getting there was a guessing game with many dead ends. On 2 separate calls, I followed the instructions to be connected to customer support for XM satellite radios, and then I would get either an operator saying "this number cannot be completed as dialed, please hang up and try again", or the phone would ring for a few minutes without being answered and an operator's voice would say "no one is available to take your call, please hang up and try again". On the 3rd call after going through the entire menu, I was told that the customer support office was closed, even though it was well within the hours of operation that I found on the website. The only way I was able to get in contact with a human being, was to follow instructions for a different division, wait on hold for that division, then have my call forwarded to the correct division and then be placed on hold again. As a company that is founded on electronics for a variety of applications, including communications, I think it is absolutely ridiculous that Delphi has such a terrible customer support interface.
Now the device has started malfunctioning again with the same problem, and I went through the same hassle to contact customer service. I was given an address to send the receiver for a replacement under warranty. However I am required to spend my own money on shipping to replace a very expensive yet defective product.
I am a very dissatisfied customer of Delphi, and based on my experience I would not recommend anyone buy Delphi products in the future.
Unreliable, Don't Bother!.......2007-10-01
I have been through 2 Delphi XM recievers in three and a half years. They both broke after about a year and half. Go with Pioneer! They have a much more reliable product.
Yuck.......2007-09-28
Well, as others have mentioned, the sound is fine. But, I had no complaints about SkyFi2's sound either. And beyond that, I've had nothing but trouble since I opened this thing.
1) It's very slow to boot up.
2) It is very slow to change channels and to register the buttons you press.
3) The remote is not as useful as the SkyFi2's remote.
4) The car console doesn't have a "jump" feature like the SkyFi2's did, so you need to use the remote to do that.
5) The "enter" button only sometimes acts as an "enter" button, and the rest of the time it changes the display mode, and there's really no way to predict when it'll work correctly.
6) This one's not the unit's fault, but I made sure my new car had an auxiliary input so I can hook up the radio--but when I hook it up to the car's power and auxiliary jack at the same time, there's a loud, high-pitched feedback, and the only way to avoid that is to not plug it in. But if it's not plugged in, it obviously doesn't work. So it can't work with the auxiliary jack.
7) The FM transmitter is not very good, and I had to purchase a separate modulator to hook up directly to the FM antenna.
I honestly wish I had never upgraded, and I'm going back to the SkyFi2 as soon as I finish typing this.
Stick it back in the oven, it's not done yet.......2007-08-14
After two weeks with my SkyFi3 I'm returning it. On paper this is a great piece of hardware, but the constant lockups and choppy recording of shows make this thing completely frustrating to use. If Delphi hasn't managed to get the bugs worked out after several months on the market they may never get them fixed.
