1 out of 5 stars This thing sucks!.......2007-12-25

The worst thing ever made, ever! I believed this one worked b/c of other reviews, but wow it is horrible! It doesn't find the best station for you like it says. As a matter of fact it goes to stations that are playing music already quite clearly. In addition, when you do finally find a station yourself it is so staticy that you can't listen to your music at all. DON'T BUY THIS if you want to actually be able to hear your music.

1 out of 5 stars Really???.......2007-12-14

Sometimes I read other reviews in awe. Someone else please let me know if this isn't working for you. I wanted so bad for this unit to allow me to listen to my precious IPod in my car. The possibility brought tears to my eyes - no more garbage radio and my CDs could finally be relegated to back-up duty. Alas, though I know what I'm doing this thing doesn't work. You can get a station with reception but it isn't easy at all and when you get it the static blares in and out randomly - a cacophonous disaster. There is no way anyone could listen to this in good conscious. My wife refuses to let me keep it. She thinks it is stupid that I want my IPod tunes so much that I would be willing to have static periodically blast into the car reducing my hearing senses. She has a point. Will someone please please reference a similar product that can actually allow an IPod to play in the car??? By the way the auto find that one reviewer here says works is ridiculous. It found actual working stations - this will not and did not work. I had to find the most compatible stations myself. Customer service replied within 48 hours but they want a serial number, etc so I have to get it out of my car. If I give them the exact product I bought then why on earth would they need this? Just answer my questions!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Value - Works Really Well - Buy It!.......2007-11-22

Love this transmitter. This is the third one I've owned, and duh!, this one finally does what all the others should have, it charges the iPod while I use it. That alone makes it better than the others. One from Monster - no vibration, very clear reception, and a lot of power. And it didn't fall out of the cigarette lighter, which is a problem I've had in the past.

Good design elements that I've noticed - easier to read light-up numbers against the black background to show you the station, EXTREMELY fast station finder, and even has 3 radio station set buttons to make it even faster.
Also an on/off switch so I don't drain my car battery when I've got it plugged in with the engine off.

All around, a solid unit - I will be giving a number of these as holiday gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to share my music.......2007-11-21

I received one of these Kensington Transmitters as a side gift with a new birthday iPod. It works great! My biggest complaint with iPods, with my kids, specifically, has been that when they have their iPods on, they're insulated from the rest of the family, especially in the car, on their own planet, hiding behind their earphones. So, when I got mine, I wanted to be sure I didn't commit the same sin. Having this unit makes it easy to share the music and podcasts that I'm enjoying with the rest of the family.

This transmitter is completely simple to use. I didn't have any problem. I just plugged it into my iPod, plugged it into the dash, and it automatically finds a clear station over which to broadcast my music. And I live in a very crowded radio airspace, but it doesn't seem to have a problem getting to work. The RDS is a nice feature, too, although it only works in my newer car. It's nice not to have to search back on my iPod to find the name of a song or artist when I can't remember it.

1 out of 5 stars Appears not to work with Nano 3G.......2007-12-11

Despite claims by Kensington that the LiquidFM for iPod FM Transmitter works with the Nano 3G (video), it didn't function as promised. In order to work properly, the iPod's volume control must be changed to approx 75%. However, the Kensington unit totally ignores iPod's volume control, so the sound quality is awful. When contacted about this, Kensington's customer service rep responded, "I understand your concern. I suspect it is partially malfunctioning, I would suggest you to get it replaced from the vendor." Not the response I was looking for. I would have preferred "We've tested it, it works, you have a bad unit." In as much as I didn't want to waste my time exchanging it for another, maybe to find out that it really doesn't work as promised, I returned it to Amazon for a refund.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Is NOT compatible with iPods..........2007-12-13

Pros: Nice screen, Nice sound quality (the 2% of the time it works)

Cons: Doesn't work with iPod (charging, anyway, and says so on the box), Poor signal scanning, Poor signal lock on.

Scenario: 2007 Corvette, City of >100,000 pop., Few regional radio stations, Wanting something to work with my iPhone as a workaround.

Verdict: Failed miserably. Don't buy, even if you own a different MP3 player.

I've been doing the whole iPod/FM transmitter thing for years. Unfortunately, I've never owned a car with an Aux-in jack or a built-in iPod adaptor, and the cassettes never work for me in any of my cars (5 different cars and counting, mostly GM).

My current standby is the Kensington Digital FM Transmitter/Auto Charger for iPod® that's been very highly rated/evaluated for some time now. I have it connected to a 5G 80GB iPod and it works better than any other FM transmitter I've ever tried (that's about 8 different models, so far). It pumps out reasonably good sound quality (for an FM transmitter) with good power and minimal background hiss. My stereo never has a problem locking on to the signal unless I'm in Houston, Dallas, or some other large city with powerful radio interference. Here at home, that's not much of an issue on the daily commute. This has been true for 3 different cars I've used it in.

However, I have a new iPhone (and payed the Steve Jobs $200 tax-on-idiots by purchasing before the price drop), and it will not work with any iPod-style FM transmitter on the market. It automatically checks for a special chip in the transmitter signaling that it's "made for iPhone." Otherwise, it puts the phone into Airplane mode (shuts off the cell phone) or, alternatively, won't play music through the iPod connector, depending on whether you answer yes or no to the iPhone's prompt after plugging it in.

I thought that Kensington was coming out with an iPhone compatible one, but they have pulled all info about that one off of their website (several months ago, in fact), so I figured this would be a nice workaround. a) plug in the FM transmitter, using the narrow iPhone adaptor, into the headphone jack, b) plug the USB charge/sync cable into the built-in USB jack on the transmitter (it's part of the FM transmitter's cord), c) bypass the need for two devices (charger and FM transmitter) by using this one solution.

Here's what I discovered:

a) the FM transmitter plugged into the iPhone/iPod does in fact work fine
b) the USB charging does not work at all (doesn't even prompt "Airplane Mode?")
c) the USB charging cable doesn't work with my 5G iPod, either
d) you must use the skinny headphone plug adaptor to plug in the jack to the iPhone (and, thus, iPod Touch, too)

So, I thought, at least I'll have the ability to find the clearest FM chanel in the area, right? Maybe that'll be worth it when I do drive to Houston or Dallas and have to face radio frequency pandemonium. Boy was I wrong. The FM scanner that looks for the most empty/clear frequency is absolutely a joke. It put me on about 4 different stations, all of which had clearly discernible (though faint) radio signals on them. Plus, the 2-3 channels I know to be the clearest were never actually selected. The result? Loads and loads of bleed-through and static from other stations interfering with the signal from the FM transmitter to the point that you can't make out the song you're listening too. Probably the worst performing FM transmitter I've ever used.

So, I figured, I should try the frequencies I know to be the cleanest in this area. Well, it was marginally better, but I still got a lot of interference, and I got it on DEAD FM CHANNELS, not the ones that had any bleed through from neighboring frequencies, even. Audio was unlistenable, no matter what the source.

The only up side was that, when I was in a well isolated location with limited interference (in a multistory car park), the sound quality was good, but no better than my old Kensington, and the signal strength was still very weak.

I went back that night and looked at the box. I now notice a pre-printed, stuck-on piece of tape on the back that reads, and I quote, "USB pass-through charges MP3 players except iPod models." This was apparently stuck on after-the-fact b/c the box itself, underneath this sticker, says "USB pass-through charges MP3 player." It looks as if Kensington neglected to mention any of this in its promotional material and is also noticeably absent from the website description. I guess they realized this after they had already built the thing and had them boxed up and had to go back real quick and change the labeling to prevent false advertisement claims. This is a bit of information I would have liked to have known before I purchased it.

In conclusion, the device does not work with iPods to charge them, only to play the music through the headphone jacks. It does a horrible job detecting clear FM channels on which to broadcast. It has very poor wattage such that it will allow the slightest interference from random radio signals to almost completely prevent you from listening to your music. This last point is important because it not only affects iPod users, but also users of other MP3 players as well.

In short, this unit is a total disappointment and should be pulled from the market as other devices do the same job, only much better and for less money.

3 out of 5 stars Does NOT charge all MP3 players.......2007-12-04

I had heard good things about the LiquidFM and decided to give it a shot. I fully know that FM transmitters are a last option, bu there were a number of problems with this transmitter.

First and foremost, it will NOT charge my 30gb Zune. The Zune has been known to be particular with what USB ports it will charge from, but I would at least expect them to test the major MP3 brands.

Secondly, the cord is too short. The reason this is a problem is because the cord is used as the antenna for the transmitter. If the cord were longer, it would be more powerful, and you would be able to place the cord in a better place. The device works best in my car when I loop the antenna over my rear view mirror, maximizing the cord and significantly boosting the signal.

Finally, the device does not always pick the clearest frequency. I would often find it had picked a station with clear audio playing, rather than one with mostly static. I know this isn't a perfect science, but sometimes the difference was drastic.

I expected more out of this device. Despite all the claims, this is just another FM transmitter which does not live up to the supposed features.

1 out of 5 stars Utter garbage.......2007-11-16

I have an earlier model of the Kensington FM transmitter and it works very well with my Treo 680, providing a strong and clear signal. I purchased this unit because it offered the inline USB power plug (allowing me to charge the Treo while listening to music) and for the new feature that would scan for open frequencies. Since I'm traveling longer distances right now, I have to often search for a clear channel every 60 miles or so and thought this would do the trick.

It does find an open channel just fine ... BUT the FM transmission power of this newer unit is so weak as to be non-existent. I tried two different units and neither of them could transmit a signal with sufficient power to be received by the car radio which is just a foot away (and the antenna is no more than 4 feet away).

This new design is utter garbage and a complete waste of time and money. Amazon took it back without question. Save yourself the aggravation and avoid this unit like the plague.
