Ideal device.......2007-12-14
Plug your iPod in (pretty much any model created in the past 4 years) and it will charge. Simple device, and for those that have a iPod that requires the dock connector cable, an extra one is included.
I had the previous generation charger which was larger -- this one is incredibly small and still lets you use the international changeable plugs.
You can use some powered USB hubs as well for charging iPods away from computers, but having the AC adapter is convenient for traveling.
The price isn't super cheap, but considering that the USB/dock cable included is $19 on its own, it makes the AC adapter only cost $10 -- not bad.
Not absolutely necessary for everybody. Perhaps I could have gone with a generic alternative, but would be slightly worried that it could blow up or something, and I also have some of the Apple international adapter plugs that work well with this adapter. In other words, the Apple white always looks cool and the small form factor is excellent.

I assumed that this charger would recharge my iPod faster than the usb connection on my computer.
But it doesn't and it's to expensive. I have seen third party chargers for much less.

This came with my ipod when I bought it. It's nice to have around to charge your ipod if you don't have a computer around. Just plug it in and it'll charge the ipod in a couple of hours, and you can listen while it charges. Does what it says it will.
Having said that, I think it's kind of ridiculous that people are calling this a "must have". Obviously, it's not a must have, there's already a perfectly good way to charge your ipod. It's a handy thing to have around if you aren't always attached to your computer, and have an extra $30 that you don't have a better use for. If you are always going to have your computer with you when your ipod needs charging, then go spend your money on something else, because this gadget is pretty redundant.

Maintaining connection is tricky.......2007-09-12
I bought this unit when my other travel adapter would not maintain a connection. I still have the problem with this unit, though it is not quite so extreme. The tip will make a connection only when it is in precisely the proper position. I have to secure the cord under my Al PowerBook so it doesn't move, then rotate the tip and bend the cord until a connection is made--and watch for several seconds to be sure the connection is maintained. Without an indicator light on the tip, the only way I can be sure I still have a connection is by continually looking at the battery indicator on the menu bar. Many times I don't notice I have lost the connection until I get a low battery warning. Never a problem with the original Apple adapter. I use this adapter only because my setup makes it very inconvenient to take the Apple adapter with me.

I was a little surprised to see the negative reviews on this product. I bought mine after pricing other units and finding this one to be the lowest cost. Others questioned its reliability, so I was concerned about taking this on a camping trip. But switching between the car and ac adapter was easy and my partner & I ran both our iBooks and her iPod from the one adapter over a two week trip. It's been great. I use it all the time now.

This product is wonderful. The reason why some of the other people have had a hard time with this adapter is that the powertip system sticks out a bit from the back of the Mac. If you are not careful with how you handle your laptop with the power connected - it can easily break the tip or the power connector to your Mac. The stock power connector has a very small head and it is rounded. The Kensington smartip system has what I would call a very "normal" type of connector. The downside to this mobile power freedom - is that you have to watch how the plug is resting on whatever surface you happen to be computing on.
Otherwise - great device, power my mac anywhere and charge my ipod to boot! Comes with the three tips listed in the tech details.
The tips are not poorly made and do their job as designed - just watch the connector !!
Kills your battery.......2007-03-09
I was still getting over 3 hours per charge before I bought this charger as an extra to keep at my office. After a month of using it, my battery now only holds a charge for 30 minutes. I'd recommend just ordering a new charger from Apple. Hopefully Kensington will give me my money back so that I can immediately spend it on a new battery.

This was the only product I could find locally to replace the power adapter on my Mac when it suddenly went up in flames. I had this less than a month when the tip broke off inside my laptop. According to the local repair shop, my motherboard was destroyed and it will cost $1000 to repair. Even if it doesn't damage your laptop this isn't a good product - falls out frequently, isn't great at holding a connection. Buyer beware!!!!

This is not the appropriate charger. This charger can hardly charge while the device is in use and intermittently will stop chrging. If you are using anything over a 20gig it is difficult to tell whether or not it is actually charging. I am disappionted that this is offered as a replacement charger and still have not found a charger that matches the specs of my original.

As many people have commented, what Apple charges for their iPod chargers is just short of highway robbery. This LITTLE device (it really is quite compact) has been perfect for charging my significant other's 2nd generation Nano and even including the exorbitant shipping cost (it's high, but not completely unreasonable given the oddly cheap price of the unit) it's a bargain and a half. It takes several hours to charge a fully drained Nano, but at this price, I can wait :)

This charger causes all my Ipods to freeze up when charging and I usually must do a reset before being able to use it again. It works fine as a USB charger just not as an AC adapter.

If you loose or break your charger adapter for your iPod, I suggest you purchase this one, it is reasonably priced and it works very good and you don't have to spend alot of money to replace the one that came with the iPod. This one is just fine. This is a must buy.

Very good charger! I was skeptical to get such a cheap charger for my not so cheap iPod, but it works wonderfully. Very good deal. And fyi, it does work with a voltage converter for travel.

I ordered this to replace my old car adapter when it bit the dust on a recent trip. The first unit I ordered didn't work. So I contacted the seller and they promptly sent out a replacement, which didn't work either. I tried both units in wall sockets and in the car in the cigarette lighter socket. Neither unit worked even though the iPod charged just fine in it's cradle at home. I'm contacting the company about a refund, and expect them to respond quickly. They were very good about sending out a replacement product as soon as I complained about the first one. The customer service was great, I wish the product were as good! The reason I only gave it four stars was that I paid for express shipping, and it took over a week to get the original adapter. The replacement took about four days, even though it was being shipped in the same state. I took off a star for slow shipping.

This kit allows you to charge anything with a USB charging interface along with your iPod. The power LED is a bit bright on the AC charger, but the charger does the job. The kit is simple to use and doesn't need instructions and doesn't come with any... The retractable cord is ideal for travel and it is solid enough to with stand it.

The charger worked once. When I removed it from the wall electrical outlet an electrical spade just came off in the wall. These items are so cheap that they break the first time it is used. I wouldn't buy this item again.

I bought Apple usb charger for $35 about a year ago but from recent trip I lost the charger. I did not wanted to spend another $35, and found a deal and it also come with car usb charger and iPod adapter cable! and it only cost less than 80% of apple's usb charger! What a deal!
I had for about a month and all of them does the job. Specially, I like the re-tractable ipod adapter cable. This is a must have for all iPod users!

The USB Adapter for the iPod Shuffle fills a product need created by Apple. The reality is this adapter should have been included with the product instead of the mini-doc. Or, a standard USB port connection should have been used. Either way, this is a handy accessory for your iPod shuffle, and it works with both 2nd and 3rd generation models.

This unit is not only smaller than the Apple shuffle dock, it's also cheaper.
Cons
Clearly this is a low end accessory. Failure rates are inevitable, so at these prices it pays to buy a few to have a backup. Additionally, secondary USB ports and USB hubs may not work with this one, so you have to use a main port.
This unit is worth a try. I feel like you can do a little better on price, so shop around. If you have the Shuffle, though, it pays to get some version of this adapter.

Nice, Compact Little Piece of Kit.......2007-11-12
Yes, the original iPod Shuffle charger has got a much better design to it, the way the Shuffle fits snugly inside that little lip and plugs in at the same time, the way the entire dinky assembly stands up on the table like some defiant little piece of Jobsian sculpture. This doodad hasn't really got that kind of evocative power, but then again, that's not what it's about. This is a very simple and straightforward piece of gear; stick one end in the USB and the other in your Shuffle, and you've got power, baby. And it works just fine.
It does seem to me that this device charged the Shuffle just a little bit faster than the factory rig does. No, I didn't time it; I've got no way to test this scientifically, so can't offer hard data, graphs or flow charts.
All, in all, this is a nice little piece of kit. No wires to tangle or tie, which is the single best feature for me. It's one simple little piece, and it goes in your pocket just like pocket change. Take it to work, wherever, and in no time you're charging your Shuffle. And, the price for this strikes as a good value. I recommend it.
