1 out of 5 stars Won't work with ipod classic.......2007-12-19

Won't work with the latest newest Ipod classic. This is a convenient gadget and transferred hundreds of pictures on vacation for me with my original ipod. Then the ipod was stolen and the latest greatest ipod won't work with the camera connector now all I get is hardware not supported.
A good gadget rendered useless. I'm desperate for it to work again!

3 out of 5 stars I'd probably like it better if I were a Mac user ..........2007-11-16

The camera connector works just fine. I have a Canon SD750 and I can connect the camera directly to my iPod to unload the camera. But since I keep all my pictures in Windows, once I get them onto the iPod, they do not run easily through the picture import wizard with Windows. Side-note, I tried using the camera connector with a mini SD card reader instead of connecting directly to the camera, it did not work. It works just the way is says, but it does not fit my preferences.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't work with Nikon 8800.......2007-11-11

This product may work well with some cameras, but it doesn't work with the Nikon 8800 at all. The camera doesn't recognize media attached through this connector.

But they need to do one like this to video cameras too not only photos

3 out of 5 stars Easy to use digital camera photo importing.......2007-06-14

There were several options available when I was looking for a way to transfer my digital photos from my canon digital camera to my iPod while traveling so that I would have plenty of storage space without lugging around a computer. I have the 60 GB video iPod and thought that it would be an ideal storage solution while traveling. The iPod camera connector works as advertised but with a few notable limitations.
1. The photos are imported slowly - at least 15 seconds per photo
2. The battery life of the iPod is greatly affected. A transfer of 250 photos will drain about 40 percent of the battery when it was fully charged. This means that after each day, I was forced to charge both my camera and my iPod.
3. The photo orientation is lost - when importing directly to my computer the landscape vs portrait settings of the photos are retained so that the photos are displayed correctly. However, while importing via the iPod Camera Connector that information is not retained and photos must be manually rotated if shot with the camera rotated 90 degrees.

Overall, the product was helpful and satisfied my requirements. I would recommend this product to others if you have similar requirements.

#1 it is slower than a USB 1.1 synch.
#2 it eats battery fast.
#3 not for a pro photographer or digital point and shoot cameras over 7 megapixel.
#4 does not synch to nano 1st or 2nd generation.

5 out of 5 stars Photos moved to iPod.......2007-06-17

I bought the iPod Camera Connector before going overseas, and used it many times to download pictures to my iPod. I did notice that the iPod battery was being consumed at what looked to be an alarming rate, but when the pictures were downloaded, and I turned off the iPod, the battery seemed to bounce back. Not once did I ever have the battery die on me during a download, and I downloaded 300+ high resolution pictures on multiple occasions. I was thankful to have it as I didn't want to take my laptop with me.

I always recharged the iPod in the evening after getting back to the hotel.

Perhaps it's camera dependent. I do know that my Olympus camera takes about twice as long to download as my Canon when downloading to the computer. I'm sure that would have an effect on an iPod battery.

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable.......2007-05-30

I bought this product for a trip. Although it worked when I tried it at home, the first time I tried to use it on my trip it failed after downloading half the pictures from my camera. It then mucked up the ipod, nothing worked until I reconnected the ipod to my computer when I returned home.

Basically, I found this to be a very unreliable product and a waste of money. I should have bought extra memory cards for the camera, instead of on this worthless product.

2 out of 5 stars Good idea, until it eats your memory card.......2007-05-23

I went to Australia with this thing, and found it very useful. Transferring photos was pretty easy, and it allowed me to take thousands of pictures over those three weeks. There are many disadvantages though, some of them very serious! There are a few "rules" that aren't really explained in the manual. And if you don't follow these "rules" you could easily lose all of your photos (and you could probably lose them even if you're careful!)

Cons:
1. You have to make sure your ipod is pretty well charged if you're uploading a lot of photos. I could get by just fine with about 200-300 photos at a time taken with a 6MP camera at high jpeg setting. Any more than that, and your ipod will die first and then who knows, it might mess something serious up! I had a 2GB hitachi microdrive for my slr, and trying to transfer a full 2 GB is impossible. RULE #1: Upload as much as possible.

2. If you don't seem to follow a very strict protocol of plugging your ipod in first then turning on your camera at the prompt, you seem to risk your ipod freezing. RULE #2: Be very careful in how you hook up your ipod and camera. I recommend hooking everything together, turning on the ipod, actually going to the "import photos" option, and then turning on the camera. Definitely do not unplug or turn anything off during the import!

3. Be prepared for a disaster! Do not trust this thing completely. This thing actually somehow CORRUPTED my microdrive and destroyed all the photos on it during one of the uploads (fortunately there were only about 100). Be prepared with a second memory card. RULE #3: Don't expect too much.

Pros:

Ok, so the ONLY reason why I gave it 2 stars is that I used it nonstop for about 3 weeks and transferred close to 2,000 photos with it. It was definitely worth it, although I really wish it hadn't destroyed my memory card. Transferring the photos is very easy, but can take an hour or so.

This seems to be a slightly unstable system that has the capability of permanently damaging either your ipod or camera's memory. Maybe if you follow the "technique" I discussed, it won't happen to you, I'm not really sure. Just be aware that there is a risk!

4 out of 5 stars Very useful device to store your pictures.......2007-05-14

If you own an iPod video and a digital camera, then you probably want to consider the iPod Camera Connector to store your pictures during your trips. Although the transfer rate is quite slow and your iPod battery will take a hit while the photo are moved, I love the feeling to have 30GB of photo storage available when I travel without the need to buy extra camera memory cards

1 out of 5 stars Good idea, flawed implementation.......2006-10-08

This iPod accessory is a great idea--it provides a way for you to back up your digital photos while you're travelling. It works just fine if you have 256MB or smaller memory cards in your camera.

However, if you have a larger memory card the camera connector completely fails to work, which is why I rated this one star. The fundamental design flaw is that the iPod Camera Connector powers the USB connection to the camera from the iPod battery, and transferring more than about 256MB of pictures will completely drain a fully charged iPod battery even on a brand new video iPod.

Because the photo copying interface on the iPod only allows you to download all photos from a camera, you can't start up where it left off, and you can't select a subset of the photos to download. In other words, there is no way to back up all of your camera's photos if you have more than about 256MB worth of photos on your camera. Most digital camera owners these days regularly use memory cards much larger than 256MB, especially when on long vacations. This makes the iPod Camera Connector completely useless for most people.

Another problem that arises when the battery drains during photo transfer is that the iPod forgets about ALL photo rolls that have been downloaded so far, even the ones that succeeded. To see the list of photo rolls again you have to press the secret button sequence that resets your iPod. And at that point you can't even view any of the photos in the rolls that were only partially downloaded.

These problems could have been avoided if Apple had only designed the iPod Camera Connector such that you could use your Apple iPod wall charger to provide power for the Camera Connector. These is a serious design error, and I'm surprised that Apple would release something so flawed in the otherwise excellent famly of iPod devices. Hopefully this will be addressed in a future version of the Camera Connector, but until then I wish I had my money back for the one that I already bought.
