Avoid this product!.......2007-11-28
I bought mine, and it worked exactly one time. I was just doing water running, so it was never even submerged. It never worked again, so I was out $150, since I purchased it before the price reduced. I tried contacting the company, to no avail. It just wouldn't respond at all after that first time. It's not worth what you pay, and the company couldn't care less about the product once it's sold.
stopped working the second time I used it...........2007-11-08
I bought this product from amazon 1 month ago. The first time I used it for swimming it was great...2 days later I went again to the pool and the mp3 player suddenly stopped working, from that moment on, it never turned on or showed any signal of life...I live in brazil and bought it while I was travelling in the US. So far I had no response from freestyleaudio regarding support or something like it..i totally advise any one who is interested on this product to reconsider it..
Ok product, not great service.......2007-10-18
After researching quite a few different waterproof MP3 players, I decided to purchase the freestyle audio sport 1G player. I wanted one that would also work outside of the water. The first player arrived promptly; when I plugged the USB in my computer to charge the battery, my computer didn't recognize the device. After a couple of re-starts, same problem. I tried to power on/off the player and it then got stuck in the "on" position and would not turn off. After 3 calls to Freestyle customer service, they agreed to send a replacement.
The new player worked fine and was recognized by my computer. However, you will have to convert any Windows media files to MP3 (with a free program such as "Switch") before you can load then on your player. I copied files by dragging and dropping, because the optional playlist software you can download from Freestyle Audio's web site was non-functional. I even tried a re-install after the new player came, but the program never populated with the proper MP3 files. Because of this, I have to erase songs off of the player by "formatting" in windows media player. It's kind of a pain.
The player worked great in the water--good sound. Even with the smallest earbuds, however, I found the pressure to painful with a swim cap. I have fairly small ears. If you also have this problem I would recommend not pulling your swim cap over your ears. I only put one ear bud in while I swim and the sound is stil fine. You can still do underwater turns with it--I tend to just tuck the player into the waist of my suit rather than use the armband.
I found out something really annoying after my first use--My player won't remember what song it left off at. According to Freestyle's web site, the player is supposed to remember if you always turn if on/off at the switch (rather than unplugging the headphones). I have always done this, but the player still won't remember. Since it holds a lot of songs, and I only swim for 40 minutes at a time, this is HIGHLY annoying! I have called Freestyle three times (once I got a real person who was supposed to call back) trying to find out about a patch or another replacement. Their service is poor, in my opinion. This product has a 90 day warranty, so I should be able to get another product sent if I could get a real person on the phone!
Bottom line--I recommend with reservations. I think most of the players work as promised. However, I have had 2 players now that each had some sort of problem. Combined with some ho-hum customer service, it's hard to be too enthusiastic about their product.
I love it!.......2007-08-03
I was a little worried about buying an MP3 player off of the Internet, but I am so happy I did! I have the 1GB model and it is totally awesome, so far. I have not been swimming with it yet, but I did submerse it in a sink full of water and it worked perfect! It even floats...which is a good thing!
It comes with a neoprene arm band which is pretty comfy, and the waterproof headphones work very good...the sound is not as clear as through reg. headphones, but trust me they are loud enough...I have quite a bit of hearing loss and they are plenty loud enough for me...
Personally, I would highly recommend this MP3 Player to my friends. It's built well, it's durable, light I can't even tell it's on my arm. It's a sweet deal.
It also holds quite a bit of songs...and is very easy to transfer songs to.
Oh, I almost forgot the greatest thing! It has built in rechargeable batteries, all you have to do is plug in the USB cord and let it charge...and they last a long time.
Great product..........2007-07-24
I did alot of research on these before i purchased them. They sound great in the water. I still havent got the right size for my ears yet. They come with 3 sizes and I just used the mediums that were on there and it seemed like they came out a couple times. They sounded great though, i used it for the purpose of lap swimming and it was amazing. I didnt want to get out of the water.

EXPENSIVE JUNK!.......2007-05-21
Wow, was I fooled. I purchased this to swim with. The pedometer button on top stuck within 3 weeks and would only unstick here and there. It was also difficult to see in moderate or bright light, and it would only recharge while the computer is active (stops charging when computer hibernates.) So if you want to charge for 2 hours, you have to be on the computer for that time...stupid. Do what I did...buy a 4GB iPod Nano for the gym and hum to yourself while you swim. (Rhyme is unintentional)
Very disappointed: product deteriorated quickly and no tech support from Oregon Scientific.......2007-01-13
For the first few months I had this mp3 player I loved it. It's lightweight and was great for swimming laps. Within five months, however, the sound quality deteriorated markedly (treble faded in and out) and now, at 7 months, the player will only work if I hold it face upwards and stand still(think of the way you hold an egg in the palm of your hand). Forget about swimming with it, walking the dog, or any of the other forms of exercise that you might want it for. Hitting the reset button solves the problem for about 10 minutes . . .
Although tech support at the Oregon Scientific website promises a response within 48 hours, I have never received one. All in all, I would not purchase anything from this company.

Update vrsion (MP121) is vastly superior.......2007-08-07
Oregon Scientific's newer version (MP121)is light years ahead of the original(MP120). Here are the improvements over this model: I swim a 1/2 mile several times/week and found this to be flawless: great sound, new, improved earbuds with ear loops really stay in place (during active crawl stroke)... no water in ear (added benefit for people like me who are prone to swimmer's ear). Bigger, easy to read screen with a much more user friendly menu interface (don't have to scroll thru all your songs...you can search by artist). I would strongly advise going for the MP 121 (also on Amazon) and give up the extra 1/2 gig of storage on this model in exchange for a much superior product. The only reason I give the MP 120 2 stars is that it has worked trouble free for over a year(I had a problem when I first got it, Oregon Scientific replaced it promptly)
Oregon Scientific MP3 needs help.......2007-07-07
I have a Oregon Scientific 120 and a 121 model, both are lacking in headphone department. They won't stay in while swimming. I tried the Freestyle audio and their head phones get wet and stop working. The only MP3 player that works like it's suppose to is the product by "Swimman" where they waterproof a Ipod shuffle from the inside, pared with their waterproof headphones that are like using bose ear buds under water this unit is a dream and highly recommended!!!!
Random isn't random.......2006-10-28
Shuffle setting isn't random, plays different order but that same diferent order every time, the headphones stink!
NOT Waterproof .......2006-07-25
I used this for lap swimming and was very careful to close it exactly how they tell you to, but it only worked for about 2 weeks before water leaked in and the mp3 player wouldn't turn on anymore. While it did work, I loved it, but for the money, I would have liked to use my new mp3 player for more than a few weeks.
Waterproof MP3 Player 1GB.......2006-07-19
I purchased this product because I cycle and kayak and wanted a mp3 player that would hold up under adverse conditions, which this product seems to do. However, it has several major disadvantages.
1. Can only charge the battery with a USB cable and computer, thus making it difficult to carry on weekend camping trips and recharging.
2. I have used 3 different laptops all fairly new with windows 2000 or XPpro, and all computers have problems recognizing the player when you plug in the USB cable.
3. There is no play list manager, so you have to scroll through all songs to find the ones you wnat, with a 1 gig memory that is a lot of looking for a song, on a screen you can barely see.

Headphones are non-adjustable.......2006-08-11
The headphones that come with this product are non-adjustable. They curve over your ears and meet behind the head. I am only 5'1" and the band of the headphones bang into the base of my neck and are very uncomfortable. Unfortunately the headphones are hardwired into the bottom of the unit, and so they can't be replaced with ones that fit better. The manufacturer says "sorry, that's all we have." Considering that this is their top-of-the line product, I am very unimpressed.
If you are under 5'4" don't buy this!
The MP3 player itself seems to work fine, although sometimes it doesn't shut off immediately.
Great for swiming long and short distances!.......2006-07-19
I have had this for more than a month now and had taken it to several places. Swiming at the sea or in the pool. The sound is quite good with the water earplugs. 1 G gives you enough variety on songs for a couple of times without changing them and if you are tired of them you can always use FM.
Of course, the friendliness is not that of an iPod but once you set it up and start swimming you just need to go on and enjoy your swim.
Best Functional MP3 Player - Period.......2006-05-24
This is the best thought out mp3 player on the market period. Just load mp3s, set it on shuffle, and go on with your day - be it walking, running, swimming. I bought it for the distance/pedometer/stopwatch functions, called "sport" mode, which works well. And, well, waterproofing helps all things electronic in Seattle.
There are three different modes (music/mp3, FM, and sport) and the monochrome display uses three different backlight colors so you know what you are looking at. The battery length is good and the sound quality is solid, including a handful of preset equalizer settings to adjust to your preference.
In sport mode, the player's design is packed with nuanced features. One of the many really neat features is that the display can electronically flip itself upside down, which lets you glance at your distance, steps and time easily on your arm or waist. Other nifty features: an alarm (useful for long timed runs/laps), goal distance/step countdowns, an electronic metronom (an adjustable rhythm beep for pace/provides distance stats), regular headphones with adjustment ringlets (helps secure the wires from flapping around), metric and imperial/US measurement adjustment (good for marathon/triatholon training, laps, etc), and as mentioned below, the break away beltclip. (There's a BMI calculator but I never use it).
In music/mp3 mode, it is straight forward. The FM mode is simple as well and a nice addition (no AM).
You don't really need any software other than the device driver, though they supply you with MusicMatch Jukebox. It appears as a USB drive so you can just drag and drop mp3s onto the player.
The area that this product seemed to lack dealt with instructions. For example, the instructions don't say anything about setting the stride other than "correctly measuring distance depends on accurately setting the average length of an individual stride". Since I was replacing a pedometer, I knew to measure ten strides and divide it by ten to come up with an average and that you need to change it for jogging/running strides versus walking strides. However, if you don't do this sort of culumative averaging or setting changes, I could see someone being disappointed or confused.
As for the complaint that it turns off, I've noticed if I somehow bump 1) the power button hard, it will shut down or 3) the sport button, it will reset the pedometer and shut down. However, there is a button hold function that locks them from being accidently pressed and solves the problem. Again, this could have been addressed in the instructions more thoroughly.
If you use common sense and look at the instructions occasionally, you'll figure it out fast and become endeared to all nuanced features it offers even faster.
great device, features.......2006-03-22
After doing extensive internet research on waterproof players, I selected this one. I can not be happier. It comes with both sets of headphones (water, non-waterproof). I tested the non-water, they sound good, but haven't used them much since the main reason I bought it was for swimming.
I use it very often (4-5/week), and do not think the controls are bad at all. This has to do w/ the fact that 99% of my use of it is swimming, so all I do is press play, and volume up/down. I loaded it w/ about 900Mb of music, set it on shuffle, and forget about it. I wear it on my googles' strap, and do not feel it there much; except for the long headphone cord which I also wrap around the strap, so it's no big deal at all. Battery life is great. I have not run out of battery during my swims (40-60mins). I charge it when I remember, usually about once per week.
The problems I have found are real minor. When you turn it on, it does not remember the last song played; I find myself fast-forwarding the first song all the time. Using the shuffle feature, that does the trick since the next song is usually one I have not heard.
One of a kind, much utility, good design, good battery life.......2006-03-21
I purchased this product to use during weight loss (gym use) and to use when out on the water in my boat. To tell you the truth, I have yet to test the waterproof capabilities of this mp3 player; I mainly wanted the waterproof capability for insurance against a drop into saltwater and against sweat. The battery run time is good. Once in a while (and I've had two units that have done this), the until will just shut off in the middle of your pedometer count and mp3 playback. I don't know if it hits a file it doesn't like or what, but this happens about 1-2% of the time. Also, sometimes the pedometer won't count, again, one or two percent of the time. Shutting the unit off and powering it on again fixes these problems. The arm band will not fit on your bicep if you have a large arm; you'll have to wear it on your forearm or use the clip on your clothing. One really nice feature is that the clip "breaks away" if the cord gets caught on something. Also, music can be organized into folders and played back just as it was laid out on your PC; no special number is necessary like on previous Oregon Scientific models. The huge storage space, two sets of headphones (use the rubber ones even for working out as sweat can damage the others), arm band, etc. make this a great package. Radio reception is not 100%, and can even get staticy just from the swing of your arm. But local stations or city dwellers should be just fine.
