basic mp3 player .......2007-09-07

this is my third i pod shuffle, the only complaint will be the battery replacement, not an easy task to do. this is a throw away item (500 full charges more or less). Other than that this unit performs quite well. My next mp3 player will be a cell phone with an expandable sd micro card, hopefully up to 2 Gb.

A Poor Introduction to Apple Products.......2007-07-31

There's not much more to be said about this product. It does what it advertises. And with the newest iTunes, Windows support is better and not as completely annoying to install compared to a year ago. But this cheap player doesn't really have much to offer. You are locked into using iTunes to "organize your media" which is very annoying for Windows folks. I guess this is "personal preference" as most people are willing to jump on the iTunes bandwagon.

Other than the software annoyances, the player itself really doesn't impress. Battery life isn't that impressive compared to most other flash players. From what I hear, the battery also dies within 1-2 years AND its not user-replaceable. The biggest problem for most people is that there is no navigational display because Apple wanted to save money on manufacturing. That's inexcusable. The headphones that come with it are terrible and should be replaced immediately with something more comfortable/better sounding.

The manual and website are confusing even for the technologically inclined. The website is terribly managed and you have to walk through several screens before getting to wherever you want to go if you're looking for technical support. Don't expect to get much help there.

All-in-all, if you want to "look cool" and do the ipod thing, this isn't the player for you. You probably will want an iPod Nano instead. If you're a Windows user and you want a good, cheap mp3 player, save yourself the trouble and don't bother with this one. As cheap as it is, its not worth it. iAudio makes some good cheap players that act as a USB Mass Storage device instead of using proprietary software, but you can also sync it with whatever as well.

Frankly, I don't know who this player appeals to.

Okay first off this is a good mp3 player its so easy to use(windows media player i used) its great the buttons though can get warned pretty quick but still this one was a great MP3 player the sound is great it was great until... So then i hooked it up to a mac computer to see if i could use it on their and i couldnt so then i unplugged it and it had all these weird problems i couldnt play my music it bassicly didnt work at all so never hook this up to a Mac computer and really go with iPod new nano video ones seriously plus 60 bucks no way go with the 2 gig c240 for 50 bucks way better or yet the m240 2 gig for just 40 bucks that too gees bad deal to now maybe for like 25 bucks but not 60 way to steep

I love my M230. SanDisk is a fantastic company with great support. I originally purchased an earlier machine and it ended up having a bug. I was offered a new machine. I accepted the offer and was sent this M230.

When the package arrived it had one of the old buggy machines. I gave corp a call and was immediately sent an upgrade and was allowed to keep the buggy machine. My original M230 was stolen so I purchased another one from Amazon (that is how much I love this).

It is amazingly easy to set up. I do not use the included software just copy and paste after connecting the M230. It copies the music fast and after a couple minutes is ready to go.

I use the new, ready to use, rechargeable batteries and after many, many hours have not had to change the battery even once!

I understand that SanDisk is one of the few companies that actually manufacture their own memory. Also customer service is in America (the last time I checked).

This MP3 player is a great bargain for those who are willing to give it as a gift to someone fairly new to MP3 devices or someone who is young and has knowledge of digital music. Control navigation is huge so you can access it easily. All you need to do is plug the cable (which is included with the player) into your computer and all you do is click and drag any music you want to on your player, it's really that simple. This is recommended for those who do not have a lot of music on their computer and are satisfied with a handful of music, or for those who do not mind constantly replacing music. This makes a wonderful gift to anyone who is a beginner to MP3.

Great little player, only a few flaws.......2007-12-17

Ok, I use this thing nearly every day. I love it minus a couple flaws which I'll explain.

1. If you like podcasts and ever wanna fastforward or rewind them, this Sansa has a tendency to skip to the next or previous track after you've been holding rewind or fastforward for a couple minutes worth of MP3. In other words, it fastforwards a couple minutes then auto skips to the next track so it's fustrating if you listened to 20 minutes of something already and wanna jump to that spot on the track.
2. It doesn't let you delete tracks from the Sansa, you have to plug it in the computer to delete tracks.
3. 512 megs isn't quite enough for me, but it works.
4. It has a funny way of organizing tracks. It auto groups things by the same artist, which is ok, but the display will show the entire artist, album title, song title bla bla bla like 20 feet long and slowly scroll past so if you're driving in your car, you have to wait to see what's playing or what's next.
5. The lighted display doesn't stay on long sometimes. This again is a pain if you're driving at night and have to wait for the title to scroll slowly while the light goes out after 4 or 5 seconds.

For the most part these issues could be addressed by firmware updates from Sansa, but I don't know how much they listen to customers. I've suggested they change some things and hopefully they do.

Voice recorder makes this a plus........2007-12-12

I bought this as an MP3 Player for my commute into Washington DC last year because it was cheap enough that if something happened, I wouldn't be as distraught as if I lost a $300 ipod.

Well, I've actually wound up using this more as an FM radio with acceptable performance, and as a voice recorder to record some personal phone calls on the speakerphone. I am sure the sensitivity of the microphone is not as good as a dedicated voice recorder, however that advantage would make this a buy again for me.

this is not a bad little player for the price if you have even a little bit of tech know how and are on a budget and hate Ipods and the like the even sell them at Dollar General now for $18 but alot of package for such a small little thing lmao. it was easy to set up the driver that comes with the player and then get songs onto the player was no prob just drag and drop files or folders as you would any other type of flash drive just make sure you make and modify your folders and files on your computer and not once there on the player the ear buds are not too bad and i am part def in both ears to boot and yes rechargable batteries are a must and with something this cheap there are bound to be a few defective ones and what do we want for chinese companies these days with all the recalls lol over all not a bad player for the money although the controlls could be better but then again for the price what do you want people a gold plated scan disk player or ipod sheesh

I purchased this for my [...]son, and for the price it's not too bad.

It's very easy to use. You just plug it into the USB port on you PC and copy the songs over. You can use either Windows Explorer or MP3 player software. I used MusicMatch. There is no cable to loose.

The controls are simple to use as well. My son has no problems using it.

The only thing I didn't like about it is the headphones. They are very cheap and have terrible sound quality. I had an old pair laying around the house and used them, and it sounded just fine.

I wouldn't have purchased this for myself, but as an inexpensive player for a child, it's not bad.

Not user friendly for such a simple product.......2007-05-22

It took a VERY long time to get music downloaded. The instructions are not clear and music would not transfer. When I finally got it loaded, I had difficulty getting it to play. The directions are not good. There are few buttons but I still had a hard time figuring it out. I would not recommend this player even though it is working ok now.

Intermittent power connections _et al._ doom MP3 utility.......2007-05-09

With different AAA batteries, and both before and after "stretching" contact springs (I was getting desperate), this seems to intermittently lose power. When it's restored (almost always by just reseating the battery) it's lost its place to one degree or another, restarts at the beginning of the current track, or perhaps in the middle of the previous one, occasionally at the beginning of all tracks.

As if this wasn't bad enough, the backlighting is uneven, the contrast low, and the font too small for older eyes, so it's difficult to tell what's playing anyway. The big power / play / pause button is indeed too easy to depress. The small skip-to-next/previous-section lever (above the power button, on the side, barely visible as a tiny sphere in some photos) is too easily tripped (and there's no way to fast-forward or fast-reverse through a track). Workmanship in the volume control is poor; the "-" lower-volume function requires much more force than the "+" raise-volume. The earphone jack was intermittent with one set of headphones. And there's no clip to carry it (depending it from the headphones puts all of its modest weight on the earbuds is not cool, sticking it in a pocket risks toggling power or fast-forward buttons).

About the only neutral thing I can say about this is that now that I've retired it from MP3 usage, and removed its battery permanently, it works fine (so far anyway, but my faith in its quality is badly damaged) as a (too expensive for its 512MB) very very slow (even on USB 2.0) flash drive.

I heartily recommend AGAINST this product (and won't be buying Nextar again).

Quit Working after Two Years.......2007-12-17

I purchased this in early 2006 to use to work out with. Since then I have used it close to everyday and utilized the expansion slot for most of that time. Two days I tried to start it up and it was dead. I changed multiple batteries to see if I had a bad one, but not. It is done for. Before this it had signs of giving up the ghost, such as the sound would wildly fluctuate if I bumped the button. I believe I paid in the $80 range for this brand new and I am disappointed that it wasn't more durable. It was never dropped and was well taken care of as well. I guess it is time to join the cult of the iPod. Well, it worked great when it worked, hence, the three stars.

Greate player, easy to use.......2007-11-08

Bought it as a refub for $17. The most that I like is that I can connect it to my computer with usb cable, and the player shows as a disk, then I just delete the music file that I don't want and copy over the file that I want, without go through the sync up process like the ipod. It comes with a FM tuner as well. Unlike the ipod, once the bettery is dead, dead as the player. Just keep some rechargable betteries around, this thing can last forever. It also allow me to expend its memory up to 2 GB with memory card, which costs like nothing these days.

Great little mp3 player!.......2007-10-22

I've owned the e130 for over a year now and have had no problems with it whatsoever. I think I paid around $60 for it at the time. I chose this particular player for a number of reasons--it has an expansion slot for up to a 2GB SD card, an FM tuner, runs on one AAA battery, comes with a USB cable so you can use it as a storage drive if you're in a pinch (which I've done many times at work!). The earphones are probably middle-of-the-road; they're still better than a pair of $6.99 tin-can sounding ones, and I haven't had any problems with them falling out of my ears. Battery life is decent; I bought 4 rechargeable AAAs and a charger for around $30 total and they're still charging fine even a year later. All in all, it's a great little mp3 player that, to me, is a step above the iPod Shuffle.

The headphones that come with this mp3 player have very poor sound quality. The buttons are very difficult to use and the volume blasts all the way up for no reason. It also drains batteries. I decided to buy an iPod and liked it a thousand times better.

Sony Sucks.......2007-12-12

Buying this product was a huge mistake. I urge you to refrain from buying any type of Sony product that uses Sony Connect. It is the worst software when it comes to adding music to the player.
The player itself was okay, great battery life, so-so screen, great idea with the USB connect. All of this is washed out because of Sony Connect. It makes adding music to the player because of share rights. Basically CD's that you own and burn to your computer are useless. Customer service is terrible. That's right Sony, I am calling you out of your hole. I will never buy another Sony product (which I consider their other proucts great) because of my distaste for Sony Connect.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. I HATE YOU SONY!

JUNK! 1 STAR, Updated Review.......2007-10-18

I decided to update this review after only having used my player 2x, and having for only three days. First off, I see why all the complaints of the software. The software used to transfer your music is a program that puts the music in a format only recognized by Sony players and gives them a extension that is unable to be converted by any media player that I researched. So if you spent hours upon hours of ripping your CD's to the player, you think, great, the music is put in a seperate folder so if I decide to upgrade my player to something besides the Sony, I can drag and drop them for easy transfer. WRONG! Once they are converted over to Sony's proprietry Garbage software, they become use-less unless you want another Sony player, and for the price there are many other brands I researched that are better and cheaper EX. Samsung, Sandisk...I thought this would be a good starter player, it only cost me thirty five bucks with shipping, but I should have taken my money are threw it in the garbage, just like I did the Sony Bean MP3 player when all the buttons froze, and I couldnt get anything up on the screen but the word Selection. What a piece of Junk. Never again Sony. They might make some good products, but MP3 Players isnt one of them. I didnt even feel like returning it since it would have cost me more money to ship it back,and then wait for another to arrive, what to have that one break again. DONT BUY THIS PLAYER. Even if you are just going to put a few songs on it, go with something 10bucks more such as Samsung or Sandisk. At least you wont have a expensive paperweight.

Software, not great, but best portable design.......2007-09-23

I had a Sony bean for about 18 months until I dropped it and broke the volume/song selector toggle. Actually, that was the fourth or fifth time that I had dropped it, but the only time that did any damage. I really wish that this device was still available, as it seems that Sony discontinued it. Mine didn't have a ton of memory, but it was unbelievably easy to use.

I loved how easy it was to switch between songs, playlists, and repeat styles on the go, no need to even take it out of my pocket. I have not found a single other mp3 player that lets me use it on the go without pulling it out and looking through things. I hate the design of iPods and the newer Sony players are nowhere near as easy to use on the go.

Good product for the money.......2007-09-02

I bought this for my daughter the Christmas that they first came out. She used it so much, I bought one for myself about a year later. Hers died with some sort of overload or short to the USB port but Sony promptly repaired it. Neither of us have had any problems since.
I'm from that older generation, tech worker but not enough time/resources to be much of a tech player. I found it easy to use.
My daughter and I both just replaced our PCs with new systems running Vista. The move of the Sony Sonic Stage software to the new systems was painless, though you must be connected to the internet to retrieve the necessary software.

Great Product for a Great Price!.......2007-07-14

My iPod having died on me a while back, I was hesistant to buy another this time around when I developed the need for an mp3 player. Intrigued by the bean's design, I hesistantly bought it. I am thoroughly and pleasantly surprised. It's design is awesome, the perfect size for a smooth fit in your hand, with handy features. The screen glows in the dark, and songs can be arranged in folders and searched for on the player. There's also a cool screensaver with fruit. The color is a nice pearlescent white, and the usb port is nicely sheathed and protected. The headphones also deliver quality sound. I see some previous complaints about the software, but I found none. I'm very technologically challenged and was sure I'd have to have a friend set it up for me, but it was quite easy to set up and transfer files. The software also connects to a music store, and the buyer will recieve a gift certificate for five free songs from sony. Overall, a wonderful, stylish, functional product.

I bought one of these, needing a cheap, easy to use mp3 player. Mainly for falling asleep with, jogging with, and just enjoying music in general when not at the computer. The price is unbeatable. It does the same as an ipod will; more actually, since this has a screen. I have had mine for about 2 years, and today, while it was in my pocket, the LCD screen shattered. It sucks, because I can no longer see what is playing, but I can still use it. Now I think of it as a downgrade from a nano to a shuffle.

Very annoying! Don't buy it!.......2007-12-05

I'll keep it short. (The review is for the 256MB version). One word - Annoying. The fact that Philips FORCED you to use the musicmatch software to load songs is very very annoying. Difficult to use. And as another reviewed said, it doesn't resume. Once stopped, it goes back to the first song. That't annoying too. You'll be better off with just buying a cheap MP3 player and a separate powered mini speaker. Doesn't look as nice but at least it works fine! Really regret buying the Philips!!

I have two of these the first I bought for $150 more than two years ago and the most recent I got for $60.
I have had very little trouble with using the features or transfering files.
Don't use Music match though. With XP windows, media player works fine for tranfers. But there is a neat piece of free software called Shoqbox Buddy which is excellent - for transfers and creating playlists. Shoqbox Buddy works fine with Vista.

Cons: There is no way to expand memory - wish it had a SD card slot. Also I occasionally have to reset the unit to get it to start - using a pencil to press on the reset button at the back of the player.

Cannot load songs.......2007-06-09

I spent 3 days trying to get some songs into this MP3 player and I finally gave up. Every time MusicMatch Jukebox starts coming up, it will give an error "MusicMatch Jukebox has experienced an error and must close". I can see the PSS120 as a USB hard drive and can copy files to it using Windows Explorer, but I cannot listen to them on the device. Unless you get the songs downloaded thru MusicMatch, the PSS120 serves only as a storage device.
I emailed Philips customer service and described the issue in detail. Their email answer was to read the FAQ. What kind of answer is that?
I then called Philips. The customer service rep asked me to uninstall everything and reinstall it. She would not stay on the phone. She said to call back when I have done that and still have a problem. I told her that I have already done that several times on multiple computers and still get the same problem. She said to "try it again". Needless to say, I got the same error and decided not to call Philips again.

I am very dissappointed in the product and even more dissappointed in Philips customer service. I was considering buying a Philips large screen TV, but after this experience I will not consider a Philips product again.

Revolutionary product - The only negative is the software. Although you won't use Windows Media Player to install the music, you must not have WMP version 11 (you can have v.10) on your computer to download music into the Shoqbox. Versatility and sound is 5 star.

I bought this thing all the way from US and VPOST to send it all the way to me in Malaysia and found out that it doesn't work. It is really frustrating. Now I have to send to out local service centre to repair.

It just.. died........2007-11-15

This player was a gift from Christmas, the display was difficult, and the option menu was difficult and annoying to go through. I would go through batteries constantly. After the first few weeks, it started to get lags, and the start up was incredibly slow, the next problem was, it would just suddenly turn off, and drop information. The lags and stalls started growing longer, and longer, and eventually it stopped accepting any information from the USB, and died. All in all, it lasted about three or four months.

I purchased 4 of these for my kids. They are very basic with nothing fancy but my kids love them. No fancy options and must have USB 2.0 to use or it has problems. Not recommended for the high end user but ok otherwise. You get what you pay for. Don't use disk unless you have windows 98 or ME.

Powerful little thing.......2007-05-21

I was a first a little hesitant about buying thus recorder since it recorded in WMA format. I personally don't like that format since I work with audio a lot (I like wav or mp3). But I couldn't find anything else that would record a long period of time that wasn't VERY expensive. So I just went with this. It worked great for what I have used it for:

College classes
Kidnapping a friend and taking him to his birthday party
A political conversation among friends.
Self-dictation
Band concert (tweeked in audio program and came out nicely)

It has two microphone sensitivities ( Dictation [low] and Conference[high]).
I have normally use it on the HQ stereo setting and I have been quite pleased with the stereo recording. For the more technological people - I have imported the files into a audio editing program and the wave images do appear in stereo. It also has a microphone jack that I have yet to try, but I know that Olympus sells a lapel microphone for it, but I am also going to try on of mine as well.

Durability: 4/5 - held up well unless I dropped it, then the USB cover came off
Ease of Use: 4/5 - Menu screens are fairly easy to navigate and the USM is "plug & play" it acts as an external hard drive.
Battery Life: 4/5

I think everything about this recorder is great . . . with one exception, the bulge in the back from the battery. I just hate it. The recorder is, well could be, remarkably thin, but that battery makes it me crazy. With all the battery types available today, why would Olympus choose the AAA size. I guess I'm being too picky about something so insignificant, but it just bothers me. There are many good qualities about this product. I especially like its USB connection. Regarding the size, I find it more than adequate for voice recording. I seem to have loads of space. I suppose if I was using it for music I would want more space. But for my needs, I am quite satisfied with this product.

I am an auctioneer and purchased the WS-310M and ME-15 Mic to record the entire auction, from beginning to end. After reading the book, familiarizing myself with the product, it worked flawlessly the first time I used it. During my break, I pushed "Rec" again which pauses the recording, and after the break pushed "Rec" again. The recording continued without making a separate file. It did a fantastic job of not only recording myself, but you could hear people asking questions, etc. from the back of the yard. Copying the files to my laptop was quick and painless. I strongly recommend this product.
