It works. .......2007-11-30
This item works. It is very conservative of battery power and has very good voice quality. The range is also acceptable for a unit that quite inexpensive. Rugged plastic outer shell and good grip rubber. Compact package allows for ease of storage and light weight facilitates your pants not being dragged down to much when hooked to belt.
Ha! These actually work better than..........2007-01-12
the models that brag to go many more miles!
I have tested more than a few and have not found even the 14 mile ones go more than 2 country miles! These are crisp and clear, go just as far as all the others, yet were about 75% less in cost. This is a strange industry with even the 17 mile range ones being sold now and STILL don't really ever get past a few miles. I live in the country, so my testing would likely be generous. These Cobras work as well as any of the others I have tested, including one pair of $100 ones! Enjoy the bargain. I got mine reconditioned for 19.99 and they are terrific! The company sent an immediate e-mail with tracking...good customer serivce.
Nice bells and whistle features, though what I really just wanted was clarity. I knew nothing would go the mileage bragged about, but these seem to be the best. Enjoy!

Cobra GMRS Two-Way Radio Pair (PR 950-2 DX).......2004-07-16
We just rec'd the radios via UPS and couldn't wait to try them out. Aft. putting in the battaries and reading the instruction manual, I went out around the neighborhood while my wife stayed in our apt. I was very impressed w/ the clarity of these radios. I had bought a diff. brand last yr. at Wal-Mart for hunting (in WV Natl. Forrests). They also had a 5mi. range. We were lucky if we could understand each other at 100yds and these were a major brand. Our older 2 channel Cobra Walk-abouts were better than those. Needless to say, I returned them for refund. These new Cobra's are incredible and loaded w/ features. The only thing that has me puzzled is that there's no place to clip the wrist straps that came w/ the radios. These I'm sure, will prove to be a great investment. Thanks Cobra!
Be blessed!

Awesome Radios.......2003-06-12
I must say I was very impressed with the 950DX Radio. This is the first radio I have had where I did not get excessive static while talking. I tried another brand, instead of sticking with Cobra, and I will never do that again. I live in a woody and hilly area and the reception is still good, even from a couple miles away. I would definitely recommend these radios to anyone.

Just OK.......2007-10-08
It's good but not rugged enough. The external ptt button just doesn't work and it's difficult to listen to music when you travel with a passenger in the intercom mode.
They are just ok for the price, but I was expecting a lot more.
good buy.......2007-05-02
These units have a few problems but work well for the money. The units come with an external ptt button you can mount on your handlebars I had the units replaced once and the external ptt button did not work on all 4 units. It is pretty simple to reach down and hit the ptt button on the unit clipped to your belt. The units do have vox but it is slow to react so it is easier to use the ptt button. The units work both bike to bike and as an intercom, however they do not work very well as both at the same time. When 2 headsets are hooked to the same unit the headsets are in constant communication therefor the wind and engine noise is heard constantly making it difficult to hear if someone from another unit is trying to talk.
I would recommend these units to anyone, I think the problems are minor and for the price they work very well.
Not easy but it works.......2007-01-10
This is a great alternative to the expensive motorcycle radio units you find at the parts stores. The intercom is clear, just like talking on the phone. The bike to bike radio picks up a bit of road noise but a little experimenting with MIC placement will help reduce it to a tollerable level. Range is a tricky subject. Nady claims 7 miles. Straight line distance with absolutely nothing in betweeen two radios on a clear day while both radios are held at arms length above your head....... hopefully you get my drift. Real life range is probably closer to 2 miles in most common terrains. Which is fine for motorcycle riding together. Plus you can have as many riders as you want on the same coded channel able to talk to each other. Warning! Read the instructions many times. Untill you get used to it, this unit can be difficult and frustrating to use. Don't give up. Play Satation took some time to learn too. This unit is well worth the money. P.S. You can even plug your IPOD into it to listen while you ride.
Nandy MRC-11X22 Channel Bike to Bike Communicator/Headset.......2005-10-12
For a basic communication device, I feel the radio has too many function buttons. Radio works well using push-to-talk button. The supplied headset is for an open-face helmet. There is no option for a closed-face helmet headset with the initial purchase. You will need to order one separatly. With the helmet and headset I have, hearing at speed above 45mph is a problem due to wind noise. As for factory support, the question I emailed two weeks ago about the headset is still to be answered. Ride Smart.
Nandy MRC -11x22 Channel Bike to Bike .......2005-07-21
Great item. Comes with speak to talk button that can be secured on the handle bars. Makes it easy to talk while driving.
The VOX also works, but found that even with the sensor adjuments feature, either the wind/noise could trigger the VOX, or you had to yell in order to activate. Unable to adjust sensor to a happy medium.
Even with this, it is a great item and would recommend to others.

Very good item for the money, my daugthers like it very much. I will like to see a small version that could fit better in kids hands.
Kids Love It but Buyer Beware.......2007-01-18
Bought this item for a Christmas gift for my two girls, ages 8 and 9. We did not open or test the product before Christmas morning. Big mistake. One of the batteries was already dead. When we called the company to find out about getting a new battery, we were told we would have to purchase the new battery ($18.00) since we had purchased the product more than 30 days prior. The battery is only warrantied for 30 days. We were not happy about spending the extra money, but we did and now they work fine. The girls use it when riding their bicycles around the neighborhood and are never further than a block away so we can't really comment on the distance reliability.
These are cool!.......2007-01-02
My son loves these, I have played with them too, awesome sound clarity, way better than I expected. The fact that they are rechargeable , makes them well worth the money!!
Great talkies.......2006-12-30
I ordered these for my nephews for X-mas, although they are still new and they haven't gone to far or different places with them, so far they love them, their easy to use and convenient and the sound quality is great, i actually will be purchasing another set for my self, especially since now they are a tad less expensive than what i paid a month ago. Great gift, actually does what it says it supposed to. Worth the money rather than buying cheaper kid versions that are plastic! Great for adults too!
Not sure what to think.......2006-05-02
Its a cool design and is great for finding someone quickly (assuming they have a two way with them). Can't say that I would buy one again... but for the price and the look, it was well worth the twenty some dollars. I still preffer my 40 channel CB any day

Bait and Switch.......2005-07-01
The seller refused to fulfill my purchase because the seller did not want to stand by the price at which the item was offered for sale. I received an automated message from Amazon indicating that the seller cancelled my purchase, and my purchase price was refunded. I would not recommend doing business with this seller.
Good Reliable Radio.......2005-04-15
I've had a pair of these radios for about 2 years and I've been happy with them. The transmission is clear and easy to understand. I've never really tested them for range. I've tried them in town (flat terrain, 1 or 2 story houses) and they receive up to a mile or so, which is as far as I've ever tried them. If you're next to high voltage power lines the range may be much less. A buddy and I have used them fishing from Kayaks on lakes. They worked well when we were a good ways apart on the lakes with islands and shore line between us. I was well pleased with their performance there. We've used the voice activated mode some. They work well, so well we had to turn the sensitivity down so that their rubbing in a fishing vest pocket didn't activate them. My wife and I have used them around the house more than anything though that wasn't why I bought them. Sometimes we even use them between rooms in the house or I sometimes have one when I'm working out in the back yard or shop and one in the house to communicate with my wife. They've worked well and I haven't had any problem at all with them in the two years we've had them. Battery life is good. I've had building project going in the back yard for about 3 weeks and we used them a lot during that time. I would occasionally ask her to come out and help with something. Most of the time they were just on and not transmitting - which is the usual anyway but they went for several days on a set of batteries that had already been in the radios for a while.
sound great, but jeez, get the basics right.......2004-01-24
These radios sound great - they are clear and crisp and the battery life is great. I also like the way the lock feature works and the fact that you can select high/low power at the touch of a button.
However, I bought a set of two of these, and at one point or another, both of them have refused to turn off. Turn the knob to the off position, it clicks to off, but the radio stays on. One of them works pretty well, only exhibiting this behavior occasionally, but the other one never turns off. Put the batteries in, it's on until they die (luckily that's a long time with these radios).
Secondly, they don't handle cold weather well at all.
Try this: Take one snowboarding, but leave it turned off. After about an hour or two of boarding you'll feel a vibration in your pocket. Yes, the thing has turned itself on, kicked itself into vibrate mode and started vibrating. But there's no display on the LCD! It still thinks it's turned off.
So Cobra, if you are listening, getting the thing to turn off shouldn't be a big technical challenge for you - engineers have been very successfully designing devices that turn off going all the way back to the invention of the light bulb.
Not Much to Add to Other Reviews - Itýs Worth Purchasing!.......2003-08-12
See other relevant reviews under the item "Cobra GMRS Two-Way Radio Pair (PR 950-2 DX)." (Unlike the pair, this product has NiMH batteries and a charger.) I agree with those reviews, which basically say that these radios have great sound quality and range. Just a few more points for people who are trying to decide whether to buy one:
SIZE: About the same size as the competitors. Without the antenna and belt clip, it's 11 cm high, 6.5 cm wide, and 2.5 cm thick. (That's about 4-1/2 inches x 2-1/2" x 1".) The antenna adds another 6.5 cm (2-1/2") to the height on one side, and the convenient off/on/volume knob 1 cm (1/2") to the other. One unit weighs about 180 grams (6 ounces) with the batteries.
SCANNING: The PR950 has 22 channels: 7 FRS (Family Radio Service, channels 8-14), 8 GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service, channels 15-22), and 7 FRS/GMRS (channels 1-7). It has CTCSS (Continuous Tone Controlled Squelch System) with 38 codes per channel. Unfortunately, it can scan only the main channels, the codes within one channel, or the up-to-ten codes in its memory. For example, let's say that someone is transmitting on channel 6, code 17; your scan would be able to find that channel 6 is active, but then you have to do a second scan to determine that code 17 is the one being used. I find simultaneous channel-and-code scanning easier to use. Also, it takes five presses of the "mode" button to start scanning; I would have preferred a separate button.
BATTERY LIFE: In the manual, is given as 24 hours in a "1:1:18 ratio" (I think that means that it is tested when transmitting 5%, receiving 5%, and doing neither 90% of the time). That's a pretty long battery life compared with the competition. The selectable high/low (2 or 0.5 watt) power output on GMRS channels helps save the batteries.
OTHER NOTES: The LCD display has a lot of information, such as signal strength meter, whether power saver is on, etc. A button on the side toggles the backlight and also toggles the monitor-a-single-channel feature (called "Maximum Range Extender"). The wrist strap attaches to the bottom of the PR 950. There are speaker and microphone jacks at the top and a charger jack on the side; all three jacks have rubber covers. The 10 outgoing call tones are useful; when people call you, you can choose to be alerted by call tone, by vibration, or both. The voice activation (VOX) mode with five sensitivity settings worked fine for hands-free transmissions. The end-of-transmission tones or "roger beep" can be turned on or off. You can turn off the keystroke tones and can lock the Channel, Mode, and Enter buttons.
CONCLUSION: Buy this excellent 2-way radio at Amazon.com!

Customer Reviews:
Great, Inexpensive Little Communicator.......2007-01-05
We have several of these little communicators, and we love them. When my husband is outside or in the hangar, I can talk to him when I'm inside the house. We also use them when we're both inside. It beats yelling when we're on separate floors. We have additional sets at our weekend cabin where we sometimes have quite a distance between us. I have no idea if they actually reach 2 miles, because we don't use them in that capacity. We have owned several other communicators, and this is our favorite for our particular use. They don't eat up batteries like some of the others did either. I would definitely recommend these to someone whose needs are similar to ours. They're excellent for that use.
Limited range; best features require separate accessories.......2006-02-09
I cannot for the life of me imagine how this company can, in good conscience, claim that these radios have a range of up to two miles. OK, maybe if the two people using them are in a flat, empty field with direct line of sight. Maybe.
In my suburban neighborhood, these radios have a range limit of one block, which is about a quarter mile. It doesn't matter whether you use the FRS or the GMRS channels -- the results are the same.
I was attracted to these radios because they have voice activation (VOX), but even when it's set to the maximum sensitivity, you have to either speak unnaturally loudly or hold the radio up to your mouth to get the voice activation to pick up your transmission, so you're not getting a hands-free operation that way. The way around this is to purchase a headset, which is $9.95 + shipping.
The reviewer who is using these as an intercom system in his home has probably come up with the cleverest and most appropriate use for these, since their range is so limited. Of course, unless you want to be replacing batteries all the time, if you wanted to keep them on all the time, you'd have to use an adapter which is -- you guessed it -- sold separately for $9.95 + shipping.
To be fair, these radios are incredibly cheaply priced, so what can one really expect? But at the same time, I think it's fair to expect that I would be able to communicate farther than just across the street.
****
UPDATE: I was so dissatisfied with these radios, I attempted to return them to the manufacturer. Manufacturer would not take them back. They told me that the radios have a "limited range" when near buildings. So unless you plan to use these in a building-free zone, don't waste your money!
Do not know how I lived without them.......2004-12-24
Bought 3 of these to call my children when they are in their bedrooms. Works great, no more yelling! I leave them on and I don't get any static.

Customer Reviews:
High expectations...Low results!.......2005-02-24
This is a copy of my review of the SmartHome Intercom/Hand-held review as this radio is a part of that package...
I was thrilled when GE came out with a base/intercom station and rechargable hand-held radio conbination. Being an owner of previous GE models such as the GE 35840 (see my review about that one here on Amazon) and the GE 35810, I was enthuastic to try the new model. Was I disappointed!
I expected the SmartHome line of radios would have similiar features as the previous models of GE radios, but it was nothing like it. No weather broadcase reception. The scan didn't scan the CTCSS codes. No programmable memories available. Features that made the 35840 a great little unit were left out of the newer model.
The base station didn't have a rechargable battery back-up option. It will let you put AA alkaline batteries in them, but who wants to waste their money on replacing batteries when the base station could have been designed to use the same rechargable battery pack as the hand-held unit. Poor design!!!
Well, maybe the performance will be good!? NOT!!!!! The sound quality was terrible. Sometimes it was difficult to make-out what the other person was saying. Man, was I REALLY disappointed!
I know what you are thinking..."Hey, you just got a bad unit." I thought of that, too, so I bought a second set. Guess what? SAME STORY!
GE really bombed on this one. Their previous radios worked great and were, in my opinion, one of the best deals on the FRS radio market. This new "SmartHome" stuff just was not a SMART idea on GE's part. They should have built on their previous successes and utilized a great platform like the 35840 and made a rechargable unit and base station based on that platform. Why re-invent the wheel?
Anyway, don't waste your money on the SmartHome setup. The older GE's like the 35840 and 35810 are a good buy and you can still find them.
