A great MP3 Player!.......2004-05-02
I've been waiting a long time for an MP3 player and after spending a lifetime looking at the many there are, I finally chose this one. I chose it because I liked the shape of it. It's easy and comfortable to hold. The only reason it got 4 stars and not five is because:
1)The headphones it comes with you shouldn't even try to use them. But then again, I was already planning on using my other ones.
2)You can't upgrade it. The memory that it comes with is it, there is no place to put a memory card in.
Other then that, it is wonderful. The carring case looks good and has no problems that I know of but I have never used them, I just put it in my pocket. I used to have a regular CD Player before this and it was so big and bulky I couldn't carry it around. Now I can have music anywhere I want because it is so compact. I use MP3 files and can hold between 20-25 songs. It all depends the size of the songs. You can also use WMA files but I don't know how to use that. The sound quality is great! With a large download into the MP3 Player, the battery life will soon diminish. But it does come with a battery charger. Although I was very dump and put a non chargeable battery in it and it spilled battery acid everywhere the first day I got it. The battery it comes with is rechargebale. It is a great MP3 Player and should serve most people's needs.

Dated.......2006-02-08
I bought this MP3 player (specifically the 128Mb Key006 model) a year or two ago. Even though I consider myself to be quite knowledgeable with consumer electronics, it took my son to tell me that you could indeed change the volume and skip tracks!
Its quite handy, but it is very basic. I should imagine you could buy a better player for the same money these days though.
I have a strange problem with this player though. When I put it into charge mode and plug it into my USB port on my PC, the indicator doesn't go green. I can only assume that it isn't charging, and I have used up many AAA batteries. One of the things that attracted me to the player in the first place was the fact that it could be charged via USB, therefore cutting down on the need for batteries. Alas, that feature doesn't work for me. I'm currently trying to install the up to date firmware, though I suspect I won't have any luck as the thing is supposed to turn green and doesn't. Anyone who knows anything about this problem, please feel free to email me.
Other than that, the player sounds great, includes the great MusicMatch software for free and has a handy neck strap with those controls. Had it been a year ago, and the recharge facility worked for me, I might have given this a score of 4/5. As it is, I'm being generous with the score I've given it.
The Fast Forward Problem for Podcasting.......2005-12-17
The problem is, as many of us have pointed out, there is no fast-forward button associated with the device. Thus, when you wanna find a position in the middle of a very long podcast or story, you'll need to let the player play for a very long time before you can find the position. It's been driving us crazy, hasn't it?
The problem can be more or less solved by using MP3-file splitter software. Split your, say, 1-hour long file into 10 or 20 files so that you can jump to different parts of the recordings. You can basically find the software for free. I am using "Fast File Saw & Joiner".
I got the unit from Microdirect for 20 pounds. It's cheap and memory is enough for me because I don't really mind changing music with my laptop everyday.
its ok.......2005-12-10
There is volume control-- its on the neck strap, is orange, its not hard to miss. However nowhere in the instructions does it say this, it took me a bit to figure it out, cause it kinda in a weird spot.
Its nice and metal, not easily scratched, and pretty light.
There is a switch that you have to flip to either charge or playback/add new songs, with that comes 2 lights, green for charging, orange for playing, adding songs, pausing. Its an ok little Mp3 player, once you figure out where the volume is.
Decent playback, backwards functionality.......2005-11-30
Philips seems to always make sure to throw in a few counter-functional elements into their products, and this one is no exception. The lack of shuffle or repeat functions is forgivable, the lack of fast-forwarding is not. This function is replaced by "super-skip", which lets you scroll through the folders pretty quickly. Nice, but nowhere close to necessary on a player that only holds about 50 tracks. In addition to this, the player shuts itself off after being put on pause for more than a few seconds. This doesn't only make the pause function worthless, it's also a major problem if you listen to podcasts or audiobooks. Say you're an hour into an mp3 and have to pause a bit to pay for a coffee or whatever. Once you're ready to keep listening, the player has gone to sleep and you'll have to leave the player running for an hour until you get back to where you were. Just plain stupid. There are much, MUCH better players to be found at this price, so even if you only need a player for music purposes, there's no reason not to look elsewhere.
Beware that the control pad, which is separate from the player, has a history of malfunction. These are being returned to the electronics store where I work on a regular basis, and you will not be able to operate or even activate the player until you receive a new one.
just too cool.......2005-08-10
I bought the player about 6 mths back, its just cool. The controls are optimum and you can't expect more from a portable mp3. The sound quality is great with absolutely no distortion also at the maximum volume level. The earfones with the player are just excellent with that dynamic bass effect. You can enjoy any kind of music on this small machine, as I wud say.
However I had a problem once, that the player doesnt turn on and could also not access the data. But dont worry if u come across such a problem. You will have to restore the firmware using the firmware manager that comes with the player and then it is fine. Never had the problem again.

Great for running!.......2006-09-16
From the MP3 players I've used for running, this is definetly my favorite. Arm band works great, & head phones are very comfortable & stay in place while running. Only negative to this MP3 is 128 MB of memory is not enough, beside that I love it!
Great for running.......2006-03-15
I've had mine for about three and a half years. I've had zero problems with it. I just drag and drop the songs using windows explorer.
Compared to an ipod it is a little clunky, you can only go through the songs in order, you can't just play 'random', but it is designed specifically for runners and in this it truly excels. The headphones are by far the best I've ever seen for exercising because they lay across your neck, and then rise up to your ears. You don't have to worry about them falling out.
fairly good product.......2005-09-08
The things I liked: lots of music storage, REALLY easy transferring music files, rechargeable battery is nice, multiple Velcro attachment places on the arm band for smaller arms, different musical settings (eg "rock", "hip-hop")
Things I didn't like: the buttons are WAY too small which makes them hard to find and to press, headphones don't fit well (not the ear pieces- the band that goes around your head).
Overall I like the device but the small buttons are a real problem and in that regard, I preferred the old Nike PS3. Different headphones can be purchased to go with the player so the headphones aren't such an issue. A few cool but mostly useless features it had were that the name of the current song would scroll across the "face" of the device and the face lights up when buttons are pressed. This last feature would be nice for running in the dark except that you're not really in a position to see the outside of your arm when wearing the player.
It was ok in the beginning then broke down.......2005-04-19
I was in the gym and it went on and then off. I then proceeded to try to turn it on and it did not work. I didnt not even try to fix the product b/c I read all of these awful reviews on amazon. I personally just went out and bought and iRiver iFP-890. I read the reviews on amazon and it was quite helpful. Again did not buy anything that is made by Nike Phillips b/c it seems to me it just doesnt work and it is a waste of money.
Not made to last........2005-04-10
It busted after about a year's worth of average use, both the unit and the headphones shortly thereafter. But when it did work, had decent sound.
