Heat Issues.......2007-12-17
As always, a crucial point to look for as a gamer is whether or not a wireless adapter will have heat issues down the line. I had this product for nearly fourteen months, and out of the blue it started getting heat issues, giving me 1.0mbps for hours on end if I was on Warcraft or even surfing the internet. After reinstalling the driver, I had about 36.0mbps to even 11mbps with a perfect signal, clearly indicating that it had heated up, or started working improperly. All my anti-virus scans and my spyware scans came up empty (as they should, since I do them regularly), and I have concluded that this heats up.
Simply stated, it heats up quite quickly as other reviewers have said, it is too fat, and that 1.0mbps stuff annoyed me.
Buy Linksys or D-Link instead.
No problems at all.......2007-10-29
I have this and use it with the matching router. I think if you do not have the matching router it may not be the right item. Many negative reviews, but few if any negatives with people using the matching net gear router. This is in my daughters walk in closet as far away from the router as can be and behind as many walls as in my house and still gets a signal strong enough to work. Just beware if you are using any other router than the net Gear wireless 824 V2. 4 star because it does disconnect about once a week.
Not bad.......2007-09-27
It was a little tricky to get it to work. Because, the first time I (unknowingly) was picking up a wrong signal. When I called Netgear, they were helpful (although I had difficulty understanding them, they are in India.) A couple of months ago after a bad rainstorm I completely lost my connection. I called Netgear, but they told me the problem was with my router. So I called Linksys and they told me that I needed to set up a new network. Apparently they claimed that it was "erased" and my connection from the router to my adapter was lost permanently. But they (Linksys) walked me through the steps; they were helpful but also in India so it was again challenging to understand them. Since I got my new network set up I have had no problem getting online and keeping a connection. Other reviews state that their adapter cannot keep a connection for very long. Of course, I'm not a computer expert, but that sounds like either a manufacturer's defect or maybe the adapter or router isn't configured correctlt?
Nightmare! Major issues with connection and overheating.......2007-09-22
Oh, how I wish I would have read all the reviews before buying this thing. I had a terrible time getting it to connect with my router, but eventually got it to work. I noticed the device ran quite hot (within in minutes of being plugged in), but foolishly ignored it. I left it on for 24 hours and came back to find my hard drive *and* motherboard blown. I can't pin it on Netgear's device, but it sure seems odd to me. After getting a new hard drive and a new motherboard, I am looking elsewhere to find a wireless Internet adapter. Save your $12.00! My little purchase cost me over $200.00, huge data loss, and a ton of time to reinstall it all.
Turns off frequently! Irritating!.......2007-09-08
I ordered this when I got a new Dell desktop and needed to connect with the wireless network in my home. It was easy to set up but that is the end of the good news.
This adapter just randomly looses its connection to the network. In the space of one hour, it will loose its connection at least twice, if not three times. Reconnecting is no problem - I just click on Repair and it goes through the motions and connects back right away. I reinstalled it a few times but the same thing happens.
This is a very irritating feature, especially when I am using Skype! I have had enough and I am ordering a new adapter from a different manufacturer!

The NETGEAR WPN111 RangeMax USB 2.0 Adapter makes it simple for you to provide wireless internet access to your computer, whether it is a desktop or notebook, letting you surf the web, check email, and chat online. It is up to ten times faster and has up to ten times more coverage than Wireless-G for a speedy network that won't get bogged down when you you stream music and videos.
The WPN111's small size makes it easy to carry around. View larger. |
Easy to Carry, Easier to Setup
About the size of a pack of gum, the WPN111 is easy to throw into your purse or pocket. It supports Windows Vista and is also compatible with Windows XP, 2000, 98SE, and Me. The WG111US features a USB 2.0 connection for wide compatibility and high speeds, and setup is as simple as installing the included software and plugging the device into a USB port. A removable cover keeps the connector protected and clean from knocks, dirt and other potential harm.
Included is a USB cable making it easier to connect the WG111US to a desktop and saving you the hassle of having to reach for the back of the computer each time you want to connect or disconnect the adapter. Additionally, it allows you to place the adapter at an optimal location for the strongest signal. Also included is a cradle that you can fasten to the wall or a desk for a more stable place to keep the adapter once you've found an ideal location.
Fast and Secure
The NETGEAR WPN111 supports the 802.11g protocol standard but is able to provide better performance thanks to Smart MIMO technology that incorporates intelligent internal antennas into the router. The router automatically senses interference from devices such as microwaves and cordless phones, and adjusts accordingly. The upshot is speeds up to 108 Mbps with a longer range and a lack of "dead zones" in your home. The adapter is also backwards compatible with 802.11b networks so you don't have to worry about not getting a connection at specific hotspots.
The adapter supports 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption as well as WPA-PSK for security so you don't have to worry about anyone eavesdropping on your emails or stealing your passwords. The included software makes managing different WEP passwords a breeze as you can set up different profiles for each location you frequent, saving yourself the trouble of having to type in encryption keys each time you connect to a hotspot you've already used.
The NETGEAR WPN111 RangeMax USB 2.0 Adapter is backed by a 1-year warranty.

Avoid Rangemax AVOID NETGEAR.......2007-12-25
I ordered the Rangmax router/dongle pair. The router crapped out after 13 days. Rangemax tech support was useless. Tech support must be outsourced to India because they can poltely tell you to go to hell and eat up your time. I was fortunately able to return the router (to vendor: netgear had washed their hands of it).
Then comes the WPN111: It works. Barely. Using there software, and following their instructions like sacred ritual, I got a signal so weak Windows wouldn't use it. Switching to the Windows manager, I have either a low or very low signal. My laptop, sitting next to the dongle, is a full five-bars excellent connection (TrendNet 'N' router replacing the netgear rat-cr*p). My D-Link 'b' also thinks I've an excellent signal.
All the bad review prior to this, along with this, can be summed up into a single concept: however good they may have been: DON'T BUY NETGEAR.
Blue Screen of Death.......2007-11-25
I have had frequent blue screen crashes, with error messages that make reference to the WPN111 as the cause of the "stop error". Netgear customer support was virtually useless. I was told to download and install an updated driver, which I did, but the problem is still there. The crashes usually occur during large file downloads, but sometimes they occur almost randomly. There doesn't seem to be any obvious solution to this problem, and I will probably switch to another product instead.
Works with Win2K but NOT XP, driver related.......2007-10-30
Purchased months ago at Staples. Installed it on a Laptop that was running Windows 2000 Professional. Rock Solid performance on that platform. It would only require moving to a different USB port if the laptop went into standby, that would be my only complaint on WIN2K, other than that it was excellent and stayed at 108 and large downloads were a snap...Formatted the Laptop and Loaded a fresh install of Windows XP Pro SP2. Can't download large files to save it's life. It will disconnect from the world stare at you until you pull it from it's USB port and plug it back in. Occasionally a 1+ MB file download from the Internet will cause the same result to occur. Tried every driver. Tried unistalling the netgear utility and all associated software except the NDIS software and it still performs like it hates XP. Went on the internet to see if there was a fix and so far the only fix is to return the product to a store and purchase a different brand...that's too bad, I've always enjoyed Netgear products...I guess the production problem in China has now bit Netgear...just a matter of time before Americans are gonna have to start building thier own stuff again...That's a good thing right?
Nothing but frustration.......2007-10-30
One star is too many. Constantly drops connections, refuses to connect to secure networks. (Like Netgear's suggested fix. Just turn off wireless security. No seriously, that's their fix.)
I've installed/supported wireless networks for over five years and this is the very first NIC that was just totally worthless. Works fine for 2-3 minutes and then stops dead.
Doesn't work as good as WPN311 :(.......2007-10-29
As soon as i added this to my XP machine - my RangeMax Router started freaking out and i had to reboot it twice a day (the least) - both of my adapters (WPN311 and WPN111) work great with a LinkSys router. Its a shame that Netgear products don't work with each other, when they are from the same like/package. Not very happy.

Could not install driver with Windows XP.......2007-11-19
I didn't get to experience the lousy connections that others apparently did because I could not get Windows XP to accept the driver (either from the included CD or from Zonet's website). Caveat emptor.
100 to 300 meters range??? Not even close!!!.......2007-07-05
The unit is small, stylish, easy to use and the drivers are easy to install. My complaint is that I get 18mps speed (vs 100mps when using the ethernet line) when the pc is sitting on the same table as my wireless router. However, when I moved the pc to another room
< 20 feet away (through 2 walls), I could not get a connection. Last time I checked my metric conversion table, 20 feet = slightly > 6 meters. I realize that 2 walls definitely degrades the signal but I have no problems getting 54mps with my Centrino-equipped laptop. This thing needs line of sight for it to work. It is pretty much useless for me. My advice, get a better unit.
Driver does not work.......2007-06-23
I bought this product few days ago.The driver does not work properly.I used driver from included cd as well as downloaded from Zonet web site and trid several times on laptop as well as desktop and get error 10 when driver installs and when I check connection it says" partial or no connection, you can not connect to internet".Zonet tech support was of no help at all.I am returning the product.I give it zero star, but that is not included in rating options so I clicked 1.
easy wireless but range is limited.......2007-05-17
easiest wireless adapter you can buy, but the range doesn't appear to be anywhere near 100-300 meters. I get low signal strength at less than 100 feet, passing through 2 interior walls (no brick).
Zonet Weak Signal.......2007-05-02
Don't buy this if you want a decent signal! It is much weaker than my 802.11g PCMIA card and it's even weaker than my 802.11b internal Compaq card. (I.e., Excellent, Good, Fair signal strengths). On the other hand, if signal strength is not an issue (e.g., wireless router in same room as desktop PC) it works alright. Of course I haven't tried it from 100 meters to 300 meters. I just figured if it only gets a "fair" signal from 15 meters, it probably won't be very good at 100!

Customer Reviews:
Dlink loves to consistently crash (blue screens!).......2007-01-12
My Windows XP system was running very stable and fast. Ever since I installed this 802.11 adapter, I'm getting blue screens consistently when I'm doing heavy internet activity. If I just leave the machine up with the connection up but NOT using the connection, it blue screens rarely.
What is worse, its somehow even crashing my machine when I connect other USB devices ( I disconnect the devices properly, telling windows to eject them). This never happened before installing this adapter.
Considering how stable my machine used to be (3-4 months avg up time before I'd restart it), it's pathetic that it now blue screens every couple of hours. They haven't addressed this issue - their driver on the website is the same it's been for 2-3 years.
I've tried a fresh install twice already and am now looking for a better product from some other manufacturer!
Bottomline: DON'T BUY this if you value the stability of your system.
PS: I wish there was a 0 star rating. This doesn't deserve even 1 star.
Does not handle hibernate/stand by modes. Gives Blue screen crashes on Windows XP.......2006-08-10
I have been using it on a desktop (XP Media center 2005) fir a year now.
The adapter's driver is problematic. Whenever I resume from hibernate or standby, the driver crashed my computer. Talked to tech support and they could not help me at all. (I had followed all the directions specified in the manual for its installation).
So I currently don't hibernate my PC :(
Works well on a freshly restarted machine though...
Unless they have an updated driver, I would not recommend buying this. (I am using the driver it shiped with and have not seen any updates to it on dlink's web site)
blue screen of death on usb equipment ...........2006-03-14
when usb card or device uses more electricity ten the usb
port can offer (usually 500ma) it goes to blue screen
especially on laptops...and on small pc s.
the reason i think is with in the 108 acceleraton argorythm
that could suck up more than usb port can give , hence error occurs.
so if you dont want your pc/laptop to go blue ,
dont use the super-G mode.
i think 5ghz router users must have a backup adapter like this
at hand.
Performance is OK but could be better.......2006-01-22
I have seen the "Blue Screen of Death" a few times, but it is not something that happens all of the time. I can't complain too much about the product considering I picked it up at Fry's Electronics for $19 after a mail in rebate. I needed a USB adapter because the PCMIA card interface went bad.
Pros:::
(....)
*The extension cable is a nice add-on. Even if you don't need it for the AG132 it fits other USB devices as well. The AG132 is a little more bulky than most other USB devices so it can get a little crowded near your USB ports. I did not see the performance gain from plugging the adapter into the extension cable. In fact, performance was slightly degraded. (which was a surprise)
*Can be switched between laptops and desktops
CONS:::
*Occasional Blue Screen of Death. (When this happens it tends to happen when the system is booting into XP)
*Occasional when the system comes out of standby you can't get a signal no matter how close you are to the access point. In order to get a signal you have to remove the card, wait a few seconds and plug it back in.
*Performance could be a little better.
Overall Recommendation:
If you can pick this up for a good price, then you will probably be satisfied. If you are looking for solid performance as your main focus, then you might want to look elsewhere.
I don't know why wireless manufacturers not putting external antenna adapters on wireless devices. If the AG132 had an external antenna adapter I would give it a higher rating.
If you are looking for performance geek, then check out the Buffalo family of wireless cards.
If you are looking for something to connect a home or at the local coffee shop, can deal with some minor issues from time to time, and can pick this adapter up for a good price, then I say go ahead.
If on the other hand you want the best performance 100% of the time, or if you have to pay full price for this adapter, I would look for another manufacturer

Crashes my PC.......2005-10-26
I'd like to report the same problem as the people above - this adapter works great *when* it works, but it crashes my PC at least once per day. I've spent an hour+ on the phone with technical support, and so far nothing has helped. For the record, I'm running XP Media Center Edition with SP2.

Best reception after testing many others.......2007-08-14
After trying a whole assortment of adapters from a variety of manufacturers, this one, and another one also from Hawking, consistently gave the best results. I have Version Z2, which another reviewer has posted a picture of. I used the drivers and software from the CD in the box. The current Amazon picture is the first Version.
In order to have the adapter that will have the best chance of connecting, I tried many--including Belkin, Linksys, Netgear (several), Buffalo, and Motorola. This Hawking performed the best, and often was the only one that would connect when the others wouldn't. I took the rest back.
I feel quite satisfied with this one, after trying so many others.
Works.......2007-04-02
I live on the first floor on Upper West Side in NYC and it regularly detects at least 10 networks.
Sometimes freezes up, I then shake it a bit and/or blow into it, and it starts working again (I suspect that everything I do is just a placebo, though).
Not having any experience with other adapters, I say it does what it is supposed to do.
HWU54G - G I wish it still worked.......2007-01-30
Hola,
1st, Amazon has 2 different pictures under the item description, the 1st item pictured is actually the HWU54G revision Z, the 2nd picture (the one I currently own) is HWU54G revision Z2. You can view more information on Hawkings website [...].
So this product gets 2 stars for the 2 things that it actually does. The unit does connect wirelessly to your router. I had to use the USB port in the front of my computer to connect to my router because the rear USB ports were too far out of range from my office to the living room
< 8 feet. Connectivity wasn't terrible, but was only 'good' according to windows wireless network detection, for the short distance I was expecting a bit more.
Secondly, the product just quit on me after 1 year. I'm no expert at computers or wireless networking but I was able to figure out the little yellow exclamation point in the device manager means that something strange is afoot. I received the Code 10 error: Device will not start, so I contacted tech support (India) and they told me I needed to update the drivers. I updated the drivers, same problem. India had nothing else to share with me after I emailed them back. Our IT guy at work said these thumb drives used for networking can be a big buggy so I since purchased a more permanent PCI network card that I've not had any problems with so far and connectivity is quite a bit better.
If I'm able to cash in on the supposed 2 year warranty I will edit the post but so far that has been a no go. This product may work well for those traveling that don't leave their computer hooked up their LAN 24/7, but for the money you may as well buy a PCI card (if you have the space) and not occupy the USB port on your desktop.
works fine w/ Linux and Windows XP..........2006-12-16
no problems under either OS, and was especially happy with the Ubuntu Linux compatability....getting many wifi adapters to work w/ Linux is difficult. This applies to VER 2, have not tried VER 3.
you get what you pay for..sigh.......2006-06-30
I'll keep this short and sweet. I know my way around computers and wireless networks. This Hawking USB wireless adapter gave me the following issues:
1) slow to connect, sometimes taking 5 minutes
2) sometimes would never connect
3) poor signal strength
4) it died on me finally!
I replaced it with a US Robotics USB adapter and that adapter does what it should. It connects very quickly once windows boots. It ALWAYS connects. It gives a great speed, and web-pages come up fast.
I don't recommend the Hawking USB wireless adapter. The money savings is not worth your time and heartache.

Netgear has no WinXP x64 support.......2005-09-20
I have entirely all Netgear equipment in my home network (routers, hubs, wireless router, wireless cards). I try to stick with the same brand for best compatibility. Despite the sometimes common firmware "quirks" of routers restarting, etc. I've stuck it out with Netgear.
Despite some Linksys products that may be less "buggy", I've stayed away from majority of Linksys products based purely on physical design. Most Linksys products are like the ugly giant-sized block legos you used to hate getting as a kid instead of "real" Lego.
So when I needed a USB wireless adapter, I quickly bought Netgear without hesitation... only to discover Netgear doesn't and will probably not ever have suppport for Windows XP x64 edition.
After some googling, I discovered that Ralink RT2500 based wireless adapters have FULL O/S support across the board (Windows 98/2000/XP/2003/64-bit, Linux, Mac OS X).
Disappointed at Netgear since their products are NOT cheap especially in their 1st year and even after that it's only OK with a [...].
Returned the WG111U and bought the ASUS WL-167g (RT2500 based) instead. The Netgear WG111U is way too FAT for what you think it should be. The ASUS is slim like a 4-pack of stick gum. ASUS just works, looks good and best of all it's more than half the price without any [...].

Software may mess up your computer.......2005-08-04
I installed this device and it's accompanying cd software according to the included instructions, and it totally messed up my computer (running Windows XP). The software seems to be severely flawed because it first eats up all of my CPU usage (suddenly in task manager it says "System" is using 99%), then it messed up my Windows XP SP2 firewall, and then it disabled my Norton Antivirus. If this software wasn't from Netgear I would have thought it was a computer virus! Oh, and the wireless usb adapter doesn't work, of course. I had to switch back to my wired networking.
The only reason I am giving it two stars instead of one is because it seems to work fine with another computer in my house. Go figure. Netgear's support and website aren't useful either.

Customer Reviews:
Seems to work pretty well.......2008-01-01
Knock on wood, but this adapter seems to work really well. I don't use the software that came with it (except for the drivers). In other words, I let Windows XP manage my wireless connection using the TRENDnet adapter to connect to the network. I got this from MicroCenter for $8 (with a rebate) a few weeks ago. For the money, this thing is pretty great. Still, $18.99 (the Amazon price on 1/1/08) is not a bad deal.
Trendnet TEW424UB.......2007-12-23

small, works well.......2007-12-21
it works well when the signal is strong, not able to connect if signal is week
It doesn't work........2007-12-15
It worked only couple of times...and that's it. It never worked again. It shows all available wireless networks but it will never connect. At the same time, my other wireless (in-build laptop wireless adaptor) connects with no problem. So it's a junk! DO NOT BUY THIS!
