This radio does what you need - not what you don't. The reception is good and sounds good. The calls I have placed were received "Loud and Clear". It is compact and comes with any accessory (rechargeable battery and two chargers, waterproof bag, bracket, clip) that you could want. It also runs on AA cells if your rechargeable runs down.
It does not have Digital Selective Calling which is not something I care about. It is not waterproof outside of its bag - also not a concern to me the way I use it.
I am a 25 year boatowner and I think the radio is great.

Great unit for kayaking.......2007-10-03
I do a lot of kayak fishing off the coast of So California, and sometimes get a mile or more off shore. This is a great unit, and the best price-performance that I found available. It is submersible, which is a huge benefit for kayaking, since things tend to get very wet, especially during surf entries and exits. It regularly (nearly every time out) gets dunked in sea water, and when I get home I literally drop it into a sink of fresh water to rinse it out. I air dry it, and it is good to go! (It even works *under water* but it is hard to hear. :-)
I have not had to use the unit for transmitting in an emergency yet, but I do listen to it while kayaking. The battery life is amazing - I have been using it for at least 10 hours a week for almost a month now and the battery is still more than 1/2 full.
My favorite feature is the ability to program the unit with all the recreational channels and have it continuously scan all those channels (plus the emergency channels 16 and 9) and pick up all conversations around me. I frequently listen to Vessel Assist and Coast Guard calls from hundreds of miles away (though usually can't hear the other side of the conversation). Because it is a hand held, the transmitting range is probably not that great, but it is perfect for the two things I care about:
1. Kayak-to-kayak communications while out fishing with buddies
2. Emergency assistance - if I ever "hook a big one" and get towed out to sea, I have the confidence of knowing I can hail a boat to help me out.
Another great feature is the built in NOAA weather. I have traveled all over California and Oregon with this radio in my car, and have always been able to pick up a least one weather station (usually two).
The charging stand is really slick and having an extra battery means I can literally go on a month-long trip without bringing the charger.
All around this is a great package for the money. It would be interesting to see some empirical data about transmit and receive range compared to others in this price range, but from a feature standpoint, this unit cannot be beat.

I bought this radio for safety purposes during a kayaking trip in Glacier Bay National Park. I didn't have a dry bag for it, and kept it around my neck at key points during the trip where it was exposed to rain and seawater.
While I can't say I used the radio extensively, it functioned well when I needed it. We had a brown bear wander into our camp, and I used the radio to communicate with a nearby touring boat so it could keep us advised of the bear's position while we broke camp. The boat's communications came through crisply and they appeared to have no trouble hearing us. The radio also held its charge through four days of kayaking, being turned on and off intermittently. In short, I bought it in case of an emergency and it worked perfectly when I needed it.

Just what I was looking for.......2007-07-01
Our inland bass fishing group had an event where one of the boats ran aground and the crew had to spend the night in the fog and cold. Our FRS radios were unable to reach them. We wanted something stronger and better, something to reach at least a couple of miles.
Several of us purchased this model UNIDEN, the SOLARA and installed them in our bass boats. We chose the Shakespeare 5241-R / 5240-R antenna on ratchet antenna mounts (both sold separately) and mounted them on the boats. The ratchets let you drop the antenna down to the deck so you can cast without worry. It's just a flip on the lever and down she comes, very quick action
I did the installation myself and the others were professionally done. The radios are waterproof and we had several showers that verified this. The only problem we encountered was that on the HI setting the radio draws more power, enough to blow smaller fuses. I found this out in my garage and chose a 10 amp circuit instead of 5 amp so I didn't have the problem. The others found it out on the water. I guess their mechanic didn't test it on the HI power setting.
Range is good and the sound is crystal clear. The speaker is mounted on the face so the sound comes toward you instead of being directed at the floor. Voice quality is very good, not tinny or distorted. The mic cord is short. It's OK from the driver's seat but not comfortable if used from either casting deck.

I installed this radio in a remote area in Fiji as part of a Peace Corps house that my son lives in. It is powered by a car battery that is recharged by a thin film solar array. It draws little power and covers a good portion of the east end of Vanua Levu.

I picked up this radio "rebranded" by a marine retailer.
I've found it works very well. I was also able to connect a handheld GPS to it with very little effort.
The power selection feature is nice for not blowing away anyone near you. The DSC feature is nice for getting the location of family members in others boats.
I really like the one touch "distress" feature, although I've never used it. When connected to a GPS, it will send your location to the Coast Guard. Good for me since my wife doesn't speak english.
I have nothing negative to report other than the mic cannot be removed. However, there is a remote mic available separately.
I would like to include instructions for connecting a serial connector to the included accesory cable (for the GPS) but amazon doesn't allow this. Maybe you can "search" for it.

A very good unit. The unit comes without the rechargable battery & charger, but it has suprisingly good battery life using standard 8 alkaline AA batteries. I have used it for three weeks intermittently and it still shows "full" battery level.

Although, this radio was listed as refurbished you wouldn't know it except for the photocopied operations manual. After putting in the batteries, I found the radio to have a great receiver with excellent audio quality.
The transmit range is satisfactory and what is expected for a portable. In order add an external antenna you have to find an SMA connector with a small profile because the connector is slightly recessed.
The 3-channel scan feature is really handy. The weather radio is also quite good. Overall this is a nice marine portable for a bargain price.

Great Quality Radio.......2007-11-13
I bought this radio a few days ago and I'm extremely happy with it. Coming from Icom radios I was expecting this to be a low quality item but I was plesantly surprised. The radio is very well made and seems like if it will last many years through rough abuse. I'm planning on using it mainly as a way to communicate with other hunters and since it has both VHF and GMRS frequencies, it's a great buy. One of the guys I hunt with has the same radio and lives about 4 miles away here in South Florida and even though we have plenty of building between our houses, we were able to hear each other clearly using both the VHF and GMRS so it should work great in both land and sea. So if you're thinking of buying it, don't think anymore because Cobra really did a good job putting this radio together.

I just received two of these radios earlier this week, primarily to use as GMRS radios.
Having used them now for a few days, I'm so far impressed with the quality and reception. My biggest gripe is that the PPT button is sometimes hard to locate just right, since it is covered by the same flexible plastic which covers the light/lock button. I think these two buttons should be separated.
Regarding the squelch delay mentioned by another reviewer, the delay occurs only when CTCSS or DCS is enabled, AND the rewind function is enabled (it is by default). Even then, I timed it closer to 1/2 second. In any case, here's how to get rid of that delay: For close to ZERO squelch delay, disable CTCSS/DCS, and disable REWIND. The REWIND is by far what causes the longer delay, it seems to me. Turn it off, and by far most of the delay is gone, in fact I would say it is close to instant squelch unlock. Only problem I have is, I would LIKE to use both the CTCSS/DCS and REWIND features. Doing so will increase the squelch delay to 1/2 second or so (which is not uncommon with many radios), so you will have to decide what works for you.
This radio is VHF/GMRS only, not FRS. FRS frequencies 8-14 are FRS only, and are not shared with GMRS. This radio is not marketed as an FRS radio, therefore FRS frequencies 8-14 are not included. Frequencies 1-7, and 15-22 are GMRS (with 1-7 only being shared with FRS).
Overall I'm real happy this these radios.

Pros: Covers Marine VHF, GMRS and overlaps FRS. Comes with everything you could possibly need, especially Li-rechargeable, drop-in charger, AC and DC power cords, and AA battery case. Good controls, metal frame, swivel-off belt clip, easy to read display. Detachable antenna with SMA connector and wrist strap. The documentation is better tha most.
Cons: Squelch (uncoded) and coded squelches take 1 second to unlock. FRS frequencies 1-7 are fixed to GMRS power and frquencies 8-14 are not included.
This is a very complete product especially for the money. You will not have to buy any accessories except perhaps the remote mic. Especially impressive is the inclusion of an AA battery case in addition to the rechargeable battery pack. You get both AC and DC power cords.
There are several subtle things that are "right" about this product. The audio is much stronger than most handhelds. There are actual knobs, not pushbuttons, for squelch and volume controls that are easily manipulated. The controls are logically arranged. The drop-in charger has a plate that adapts it for charging the battery alone, without the radio. The RF squelch will open the tone or DCS squelches allowing accurate, single-control setting of the RF squelch threshold or opening up of the squelch for receiving weak signals. The backlight is orange and bright enough to read easily. The LCD display is easy to read from a normal viewing angle.
I have not had enough experience with the "say again" feature to determine its usefulness but it is well implemented. The audio quality is as good as the original transmission and you get 20 seconds of stored audio. Replay is counted down on the display and you can cancel playback by merely tapping the PTT.
Weather reception has several interesting alerting features including WX alert and SAME monitoring. I did not test these as of this writing, but the WX reception is excellent.
The only negatives I could find about this radio involved the squelch and the lack of FRS power levels and FRS frquencies 8-14.
The squelch open or unlock times were annoyingly long. Uncoded squelch open time on VHF marine or GMRS bands was the better part of a second. This may not seem like much until you consider the fact that most people start speaking just a fraction of a second before they key the mic. With this radio it will lead to the guaranteed loss of up to the first two seconds of audio. For those with a long "uhhhhh" before their real message, that will work. But for most others, it will result in a lot of missed calls. The unlock time for coded squelch (tone or DCS) is almost exactly one second, making performance here slightly worse.
Given the completeness of the product, the fact that a power setting for FRS compatibility and frequencies 8-14 are missing is puzzling. Still, I believe in actual use this limitation is more than easily overcome.
After testing it looks like I'm going to be getting a few more of these. You really can't beat them especially for the price.

I just purchased two(2)of these transceivers from Amazon and I'm very satisfied. I have purchased at least five other sets of GMRS/FRS transceivers from local consumer sporting goods, Home improvement, & electronics stores, only to get a "retail/consumer grade" product that only looked/felt & performed like a little kids toy. This professional grade product feels & works solid and is a great deal at only $119.00 ea.

I purchased this Cobra MR HH425LI VP VHF Radio to use out on the Delta. After using it I have found that the range is very low, maybe 2 miles on a good day if you have a open view to the receiving party. It is easier to hear others then it is to communicate back even on the High power, when close they get static, if they can even hear you, the coast gaurd towers can not even pick you up on the relays when I tried to contact them about a piling in the water. I would highly suggest that someone really does some shopping if this is your only means of communicating to the coast gaurd or vessels unless you are going to be within a mile of your contact, you can get that out of a walkie talkie. The radio is fine for monitoring stations but I really needed more out of my VHF radio, we are going to hook it up to a external antenna on our boat but this doesn't help to be able to use it in our dingy so I would suggest that people look else where when shopping for a hand held VHF radio, this radio was definately over rated.
