This works great. I use it in my home office, but have also used it in a meeting room that is much larger than the specs say it is designed for. We had about 10 people, anywhere from 2' to 15' from the speakerphone, and it worked fine. The soft-spoken people at the far distance were hard for the person on the other end to hear, but that would have been true with any speakerphone. Polycom makes great high-end speakerphones, but this shows their low end ones are good too.

I am quite suprised that Amazon does not provide a warning in the product description that this device works only on a PC and is oriented towards XP specifically. Well, not only does it not work on the Mac OS, it will not run, as far as I can tell, under Parallels (software the emulates a PC on the Mac). If you are a Mac user.... stay away.

I've had the speakerphone for several months now, here are my comments:
Pros:
Installation is trivial - install software, plug and play. 5/5
Sound quality is great in and out. 5/5
Skype works great with it because it can manage its audio I/O sepearately from windows. You can mute windows and still work with skype.
Cons:
No nice, simple, clear, red disconnect-call button. 3/5
No manual volume control. The volume is control through windows. This means that if windows is off doing its own thing (i.e., unresponsive) you're stuck with all the controls NOT WORKING. A manual mute and volume controls would be much preferred. 1/5
The wire is held inside the back of the unit in a closable compartment. Alas, it is sometimes hard to fit inside that compartment. 4/5

I used the Polycom Communicator on a trip to England, Germany, India, and Brazil. It (and Skype) gave great sound quality in both directions on conference calls from hotel rooms in all of those countries, modulo the occasional minor dropout in the sound.
The build quality is high. It may look a bit plasticky in the pictures, but it has metal speaker and microphone grills, rubber feet that make it feel solid when you set it on a table or counter, a good feel to the buttons and a cool glowing ring of indicator light around the buttons that lets you know when you're on a call, muted, etc.
It packs down so well that I don't use the neoprene case. Having a business quality Internet speakerphone is so great an advantage that from now on I won't travel on business without it.

First, outstanding speaker phone and tool. As previously stated, you will have no problem hearing the people on the other end as the sound is crystal clear.
To be fair, I have found the sound you transmit will be influenced heavily by the acoustics of the room the device is in. If you have a slight echo in the room or office, that will translate via the mic for a hollow or barrel sound on the other end. Otherwise, no one would be able to tell you're on speaker. Even with a bit of an echo, the transmitted sound/voice is clear and never muffled.
We have not purchased the additional mics, therefore I can't speak to whether or not that would remove any resonant sound.

This phone is a good quality phone. When on speaker, typically during conference calls, the sound is crystal clear. And the people on the other end have no trouble at all distinguishing your words. I also purchased the 2 additional mics which compliment quite well. If you plan on getting the mics, make sure you get the expandable version of this Polycom SoundStation2. There are many versions that are similar to this one, and it's easy to get them confused. I definitely recommend this phone!

These have been around a long time and this one works great. Sound and wireless work great.
The only negative is that the battery it comes with is very small (doesn't fill up the battery storage area in the phone) and doesn't last very long on stand-by ... maybe 1 day.
We need to see if this is just a bad battery or if they sell a bigger battery as an upgrade.

Great product but the "buy it together" with extension microphones is wrong. You have to have the expandable version which is considerably more expensive. But, as a stand alone conference phone, it is excellent.

I have been using the wireless conference phone for about a month, primarily for two way client conversations. Clients on their cell phones sometimes have difficulty hearing me. I have also had few a clients using their wireless home phones that have had some difficulty hearing me. This has been only a minor problem.
The battery life is way to short for a phone this expensive. But it's only a small inconvience to charge it. I'm happy with the quality of sound. It is very handy to have a wireless phone because I can pick it up and move it to my next door filing room while I'm still talking to my client.
I would recommend the phone to new purchasers.

Great speaker.... terrible Microphone.......2007-09-21
I've used the Polycom 300 for about 6 months now and my experience has been very mixed. The sound from the speaker is great. However, everyone I speak to with this phone complains that my voice sounds like I'm talking from inside a sea-shell or a tin can.
They have trouble hearing me and I find that I have to hold my head about 10 inches from the mic in order to be heard clearly. People hate talking to me when I'm on this phone.
Unlike the digital polycom units, this one doesn't have external microphone inputs... so there's really no way to remediate the poor sound with a better microphone.
It is what it is.
My recommendation would be to consider other products before this one - or at the very least, wait for the price to go way down.

I work from home on a regular basis and this product solved the problem of not having a good solution for conducting conference calls from my home office. As stated in the literature, it doesn't pick up past about 7 feet from the phone but I actually think that is a good thing since any possible background noise (i.e. dog barking in another room) doesn't come across the call and distract the participants. Great phone and great buy. Highly recommended for small conf table or home office use.

I am an independent consultant who needs to make a lot of calls, frequently long conference calls and quite often to Europe. After researching numerous options I settled on Skype as providing the cost and flexibility I needed to facilitate my needs which includes making calls on the road. I then needed to optimize the way I communicate with Skype and progressed from the built in microphone and speaker on my laptop (too much feedback), to a headset, both bluetooth and wired (OK but tethered to the computer with wired and comfort in hour two with Bluetooth), to a speaker phone. Having used the Polycom speaker phones for many years in Corporate America I was familiar with their superior build quality and excellent audio clarity and performance. I also considered wireless Skype phones but the chargers and auxiliary hardware I would need to carry on the road ruled them out.
The Polycom C100S has been great with no issues on microphone or speaker setup and performance. I do note that the clarity of the calls is better on "wired" high speed connections as opposed to "wireless" connections but even the "wireless" is adequate. The "wired" connections are clear with excellent tonal range and performance. The reviewers who have had performance problems may want to try a "wired" connection to their high speed internet before they bail out of this product.
The only knock I would have is that the built in USB cable does not look as robust as the rest of the unit and is a bit difficult to wind up properly so that the case closes cleanly. The unit is self contained in the convenient carry case and requires no additional cables, power supplies or other accessories - very portable. All in all I am quite pleased with the product and would repeat the purchase again.

This speaker phone is great! It is small, portable, and gives clear sound that is largely echo-free (a frequent problem with skype that tries to save on bandwidth) though perhaps not quite up to the best headphone. My only gripe is the limited microphone volume which listeners sometimes complain about.
Low microphone gain.......2007-03-22
I am the founder of a European software company and travel a lot. The Communicator device sounded like a dream come true for conference calls on the go.
I purchased my first device last January and the microphone gain was incredibly low even at the maximum Skype setting. I figured it was a defective device and returned it to Amazon for a refund.
A couple of months later, I decided to give Polycom another try by ordering a second device, hopefully from a separate batch. I thought the probability of encountering two defective devices in a row would be very low. I was wrong. What does that tell you about Polycom's QA?
FYI, I kept Skype's automatic device volume settings turned off and set the mic gain at 100%

These units are expensive (compared with a headset), but so much more convenient. My parents overseas love some gadgets and hate the rest, but this fits the bill for them. I called them 45 minutes after the unit I sent them arrived in the mail and they answered. Instead of relaying messages they were both online and clear.
Noises in the background can be a distraction (a teakettle boiling on the same counter for example), but in general the sound is just great. And the speaker works much better than my internal laptop speakers for watching videos and listening to podcasts.
I am worried that the little wrap up cord will fail as it has to be stretched and prodded to go back in its nice holder each day, but no problems so far.

With all due respect to the other two reviewers, I think they need to figure out how to check their Windows Sounds and Audio Devices settings. The problem they both reported can be easily fixed by going into their Windows Control Panel, then to Sounds and Audio Devices settings, and finally increasing the Sound Recording slider to 100% (which can be found on the Audio & Voice Tabs).
This device is outstanding. It is vastly superior to any other brand of Skype USB speakerphone on Amazon (or in the market). It is sleek and compact, easy to carry around. It really gives the best hands-free Skype experience. Additionally, the speaker is very, very good. When I travel, and am doing work in hotel rooms, I listen to music from my iTunes. It is much better than listening to music from the speaker on my PC, or tethering myself to the laptop with headphones. It is also great for playing presentation audio or Podcasts. Communicator is designed by the same company that created the legendary Polycom SoundStation conference phone...the triangle-shaped conference phone found in 90+% conference rooms worldwide. These guys really know their audio! I highly recommend it to all mobile workers who use Skype regularly.
I have recommended this device to many of my family members who use Skype regularly. Those who have purchased it so far absolutely love it! And those who havent' had a chance to pick it up yet...they will be receiving it as a stocking stuffer this Holiday Season. :-)

I had to return this product.
The specifications were not detailed enough when I read the information online. I needed microphones for an audio tape deck (stereo) for documentation. If it were phono or RCA connectors it would have been fine I believe. The connectors on this product were telephone jack connectors. While all the other print information for this Polycom product looked fine, unfortunately it was the wrong choice.
Again, nothing in the online text for the product explained that the connections were telephone connectors.

The product worked rather well for about 8 months with occasional use. Though it saw only light occasional use it failed (no power, no reason why). I called to have it returned via RMA and was promptly issued an RMA number on October 2nd (10/2).
Things became very busy for me and I expected to see the unit any day for the past 4 weeks. Nothing came in. Today (11/2) I called to find out why the replacement unit had not yet been returned. I was told that it had been received on (10/10) and was ready to ship. I was also told that for purposes of "stock control" RMAs were held for 30 days before shipping. I was told that the unit (even though it was ready to ship) would not be shipped until 11/10 but never fear! It would be shipped via 3-day Air. Whoopee! (sarcasm).
As I do the purchasing for my department and have done better than 10 RMAs this year I have NEVER had a product take so long to be replaced nor dealt with a company that seems to have a punitive "hold period" on RMA cases. We have been without this conference phone for more than 4 weeks and will be without it for another 2 weeks before receipt of the replacement unit. All the while, no conference phone.
To sum up. I'm not at all happy with this company's RMA policy. I don't expect next day service but for a $300 phone I expect much better service than I received.
Decent speakerphone for the money.......2003-07-18
No question about it, Polycom make the best speakerphones. This particular model is a compromise; its better than many phones but far from the best that Polycom can do. Here's the scoop.
This model uses three microphones (one in each corner of the triangle), all of which remain active the entire time. Depending on your room acoustics and where you sit/stand, you may sound like you are talking from inside of a deep well (kind of a hollow echo). Better Polycom models (like the Soundstation Premier) avoid this by only leaving one microphone active at a time, and with higher quality components and circuits. For example, noice canceling circuit to to remove background noise, a feature lacking in this model.
That said, you may still be happy with this model, as it costs a whole lot less than the Premier version and is way better than the built-in speakerphones included in many desktop handset units. To decide you need to consider how important the quality of your conference calls is, and what kinds of acoustics the room that you'll be using has. If you need the best, go with the Premier, otherwise this is a solid model.
Wonderful speakerphone.......2000-08-05
After getting frustrated with typical multipurpose phones (handset, speakerphone, answering machine, caller ID, potato peeler, and inflatable raft all in one) I went looking for an excellent speakerphone. This gets my highest recommendation. The sound is clear, the ability to carry on a two-way conversation without noticable pausing or clipping is wonderful, and the system is compact and easy to use. One slight caveat: though the microphones are sensitive enough for everyday use and the speaker can be turned up loud enough to make the party at the other end of the line clearly audible, there is a certain threshold below which you cannot hear the individual at the other end of the line - in this case, a handset can be superior. (I didn't downgrade this system from five stars for this, though - all speakerphones seem to have this problem.)
Definitive Speakerphone.......2000-06-20
I've never been inside a major company that used a speakerphone other than this one. Great full duplex sound. Expensive, but worth it.
