A real value.......2008-01-01
This combination cordless phone and answering device is a real value. The phone has excellent range and clarity. The answering device is easy to operate. The design is functional and attractive. The build quality appears to be good.
For under $60, this is a real value.
Brilliant!!!.......2007-12-23
This phone does what it promises and does it brilliantly. My wife and I love the LCD display on the handset. The voicemail feature on my vonage easily translates onto the handset. Additionally, you dont have to store the numbers to be able to identify them. If your service provider has a directory service, the phone automatically identifies the name and displays it when the caller calls. The clarity is fantastic. The range for the handset is also good. My wife usually takes the phone with her to our neighbors place and it works well there too. I picked this up on a deal at Amazon for 53$ and its tremendous value for that much. I would surely recommend this to anyone.
AT&T EP5995 Base Review.......2007-12-08
As typical AT&T products, this system is sturdy and works well. Its easy to install, navigate, and use. Unfortunately, if you are looking for all features, design, and finish, this is also a typical AT&T product. I was disappointed by not offering autodial (speed-dial), the cheap finish, and the amount of effort needed (force) to properly navigate through the menus with the cheap center mouse-like button. For the price I guess its a good buy, but its not the product I was looking for.
Best Phone I've Ever Owned.......2007-12-07
After five years my old Panasonic phone was reaching its end; it started to drop calls, the battery wasn't keeping a charge anymore (even after being on the charger all night), and I couldn't even walk out back behind my apartment without it disconnecting from the base. It was time to retire it so I started doing some major research, keeping in mind the features and performance that I wanted.
The Panasonic was an aging 900MHz and so I focused on phones in the 5.8GHz range. There was a lot to choose from so it took me a while, but I finally decided on the AT&T EP5995. I based my decision on two things - 1) the brand name AT&T because they may be a terrible phone company but they do make excellent phones, and 2) the plethora of excellent features. Having used this phone now for almost a year I can truthfully say it is the best phone I've ever owned.
The phone is very easy to setup as long as you read the manual, which is quite thick and impressively detailed. The base has a digital answering machine that holds up to fifteen minutes of messages and you can also place calls from the base because it has its own set of number keys. There base also has a very large display screen which shows the caller ID information (although the base screen is not in color it is large enough to see everything clearly and it does light up when someone calls you). There are about the same number of function keys on the base as there is on the handset although I rarely use the base except for setting the different functions (time, date, etc.).
One very interesting feature on the base is the optional spare battery compartment, which can hold a battery similar to the one that's in the handset. This spare battery can be kept charged in the telephone base for quick replacement when the handset battery pack is depleted. In the event of a power failure, the charged battery pack in the base will allow you to make and receive calls from the cordless handset for up to three hours.
There are separate directories in the handset and the base. The directory in the handset can store up to one hundred entries. The call log in the telephone base can store up to 50 entries. If you subscribe to Caller ID service you can select a picture or an animation to be displayed with each entry. You can also select a distinctive ringer melody for each entry, the caller's identity is known as soon as the telephone rings. The Pictures and Animations settings allow you to select an image or design as wallpaper for the background of the handset screen. I've never been much on pictures, ring tones, or any of that extra garbage, but that stuff is there if you want it. The full color LCD screen is beautiful and there are even display settings so you can adjust it to your liking.
On the handset there is a Call Log which keeps track of all the calls you receive which can easily be accessed by pressing the soft key under CALLER ID (on the main screen). You can REDIAL just as easily by pressing the soft key under this heading (on the main screen) and then using the arrow keys to go through the numbers stored there. For calls with Caller ID information, the handset will log the Caller ID information and keep a running counter of the number of unanswered calls. These appear on the main screen as "Missed Calls" along with the current time.
The EP5995 can accommodate up to eight cordless handsets, although why anyone would need this many is beyond me. You can add new handsets anytime, but each must be registered with the telephone base before use. Again, this is a pretty painless process, as long as you follow the manual.
The battery life is exactly as the manual states: 5 hours (of straight talk time) or 3 days off the cradle. I have had the handset off the cradle for three days and in that time I talked on the phone for about three hours so I know it's true. As for the sound quality I find it excellent, and AT&T was thoughtful enough to include a volume control on the handset (located right next to where you place your thumb when talking). Just keep in mind that we live in a digital world and there are all manner of electronic devices that can cause interference when talking on a phone such as this. The best solution I have found for keeping the line clear on the phone while talking comes straight from the manual itself...
"Other electronic products can cause interference to your cordless telephone. Try installing your telephone as far away as possible from the following electronic devices: wireless routers, radios, radio towers, pager towers, cellular telephones, digital telephones, intercoms, room monitors, televisions, VCRs, personal computers, kitchen appliances, and other cordless telephones."
I placed my phone on the opposite side of the room away from all my electronic devices (TV, computer, etc.) and I have not had any connection issues yet. Occasionally there has been some noise on the line, but this is very brief and is usually the result of me moving too far away from the base.
These are just a few of the features that I prefer and which are very impressive and easy to use on this phone. All in all I am completely satisfied with this purchase. I would recommend getting the spare battery (AT&T model #00249) because this is an extremely handy feature to have if the power goes out and I haven't seen it on any other phone but this one. Extra handsets (AT&T EP590-3) and the spare battery can be purchased on the AT&T web site for a pretty decent price.
Totally Pleased !.......2007-12-06
I selected this phone for the primary reason that it has a base dialer and more importantly the base LED screen I am able to read without eye glasses. As with all cordless phones the screen is too small and I have to put on glasses to read the caller ID information. I have found this phone to be exceptional in every way. It is user friendly and the sound quality is excellent. I looked at many phones online before making this purchase. I highly reccomend this phone!

No more microwave interference........2007-02-17
Buttons are easy to read. Good reception both indoors and out. Wide volume range. Initially purchased the base unit and a single handset. Plan to order two additional handsets.
Packing it up and sending it back.......2007-01-23
After about 15 minutes of use, voice quality rapidly deteriorates to the point that conversation is impossible. It then stays in that state for at least a day. Returning it to Amazon.

Customer Reviews:
same problem as Andrew.......2007-09-12
My phone has the same problem as the previous reviewer: it worked fine for about a year, but then the cordless started saying "can't connect." I purchased a new battery for this, but it still refused to connect.
worked okay but cordless lost its ability to connect in 9 months.......2007-07-16
This phone did the job initially, but after nine months of light use, the cordless unit lost its ability to connect to the base. I tried the manual's suggestions of power cycling both the base and the handset, but this didn't solve the problem. So essentially, the phone is not really usable. I'm planning on buying a new unit soon.
Outstanding phone!.......2007-06-25
I purchased this phone after having purchased a different model ATT speakerphone. I couldn't use the first one because the speakerphone volume was far too low even in the highest setting. My dad purchased an E5908 model, loved it so I thought I would give it a try. And I love it!
There seems to be two different "E5908" models out there - one made by V-tec (black face) and another made by AAT (silver face). I wonder if those with the negative opinion of this phone don't have that silver-faced unit from AAT.
I've been using mine for about 6 months now, and never had any problems whatsoever. The volume control functions well, the speaker is crystal clear, and the features are outstanding. Highly recommend getting this E5908!
great phone recommended by CR.......2007-03-11
i chose this phone because it was recommended by Consumer Reports. So far it has been great. Voice quality for recordings is good, which is the main reason why i purchased it to replace my last phone. I also chose this phone for the 5.8 GHz operating frequency so it won't cause issues with my wireless router operating frequency (2.4 GHz). I also like the feature that it has a corded phone that works if the electricity is out. It is like having two phones in one because the cordless phone can be placed in a different location from the corded base. I have also found that both handsets can be used in a single conversation.
It is Just Right.......2007-02-21
The AT&T E5908 is just the right size for our needs. We did not need two lines or several handsets, we did need an easy to use answering machine with a speakerphone; and thatis what we have. Bravo to AT&T.
