Setting up the phone for basic operation was easy--we just inserted the battery pack, plugged in the AC adapter/recharger, and connected the phone cables to two standard RJ-11 jacks. (At your site, you may have two lines in a single RJ-14 jack.) You control the features through the base unit's 19 front-mounted buttons; there are also two switches on the side and one on the bottom. The handset has an LCD display and 11 buttons in addition to the usual 0-9, #, and *.
We had more difficulty operating the advanced features of the VTech VT2960. Although an audio menu guides you through the steps, using the advanced-feature set (conference calling, memory dialing, caller ID, and setting up the answering machine), was not entirely intuitive without the 45-page instruction manual.
To test the range of this cordless phone, we placed the unit on the fourth floor of an urban office building, subject to many sources of interference. The handset functioned flawlessly over two floors--to about 100 feet. Beyond that, the signal began to cut in and out. The handset automatically searched for the best channel and switched channels as necessary. Long distance and local calls sounded as clear as most corded phones.
With its full suite of features, built-in answering and caller-ID system, and clear sound, this two-line phone would make an impressive addition to a small business or home office.

I have had this phone for a little over 4 years. For the first 4 years, it worked fine. Recently the handset does not work reliably; I can hear fine but the microphone & headphone connection do not always work - the other person might not hear you. I mostly just use it's basic features. You can dial the number before connecting to the line, which is nice because you do not have to hear the "beeps" in your ear. Overall, I was pleased with this phone and am considering getting another one to replace the defective version.

The sound quality is great, both for me and for the people on the other end. The functions are awesome, and I really like having an answering machine that works with both lines. The only problem I've found so far is that, as the editorial review said, the advanced features are not as intuitive as I would have liked. I'm going to have to keep the manual handy until I am sure I know how to do everything.
My only other quibble is that someone pasted a little sticker over the one-year warranty, to make it only a 90-day warranty. That's probably because I opted to buy through one of the vendors rather than direct through Amazon, but I still think it's kind of cheesy.
But the phone is great!

I purchased the VTECH phone less than a year ago. The sound quality was terrible, and the phone often frezes up not allowing calls in or out. It must be unplugged an reset to work.

Like all VTechs - great price; acceptable function. I've owned this phone for many years. Reading the negative reviews is disappointing. What do people expect from a phone that does everything for less than $100? The sound and other qualities are adequate, not exceptional. Have your ever made a good recording from a small condenser mike? Try getting closer and speaking quietly. Good range. It is sturdy and reliable. The electrical engineer who needs the manual to set the time should change professions. Just *LISTEN* to the menu. I really like the extra battery serving as power backup - very useful where I live.

The phone is easy to use and the answering machine is reasonable. The lack of a keypad on the base station can be annoying because you have to use the tiny buttons on the handset instead. The real problem with this phone is abysmal sound quality. People kept asking me to "speak up" and I kept saying "Excuse me" to get people to repeat things that I couldn't make out. And god forbid that you are taking to someone on a cell phone - reciprocal gibberish. So bad that I had to return this phone. So I cannot recommend this phone to you.

Overpriced & Underperforms.......2006-04-29
I was entering a speed dial number, had to refer to the manual. I had already entered the number and played the letter game to get the name in, back to the manual to figure out what "set priority tag" means, okay, back to the phone ... NOT ... the phone decided to time-out my programming an erase everthing. This pretty much sums up this phone.
Note that the phone is WARM. They have changed something from the prior versions so that when you pick up the handset the mouthpiece section that rests against your chin is actually warm to the touch, and you get a nice "warm plastic smell". Tech support says, "yea, mine is hot, too." Note that my previous phones were NOT hot.
This is clearly not Polycom's core strenth.

The quality of the conference phone is not near as good as the Polycom phones on your conference room table. You have to be pretty close to the phone and speaking into it for others to hear you clearly. If all you want to do is listen to others talk on speakerphone then it is fine....good for listening to conference calls on speakerphone.
Just Stopped Working One Day.......2002-02-23
Suddenly, after 16 months of use, the phone just stopped working. Neither the handset nor the speaker phone works and the LCD display has gone blank (but the LEDs light-up). I called the customer support line and they recognized the problem. But they will not replace or fix the phone without charging me ... since the one-year warranty period ran out four months ago. Obviously I am not going to pay ... for a refurbised phone, especially since I was never really happy with it. Its duplex feature never quite worked well and the mic was not sensitive enough and the speaker volume never went high enough. Overall, the quality of Polycom's home products are drastically inferior to its office products.

Great for a small business.......2007-10-25
I purchased the Poycom SoundPoint SE-220 to replace an older SoundPoint telephone (made in 1988), that was damaged by lightning. After I plugged the new telephone in and connected it to my phone line, I called my father who is a long time "telephone systems" employee. Even with his trained ear, he had to ask me if I was on the speaker phone or not. That made me smile about the money I spent on this telephone. I am on the speaker phone around six hours every work day with sometimes 75 to 100 others on confernece calls. Sound quality in these calls is essential to my day-to-day operation, and was my reason for selecting the Ploycom telephone. Pickup from the built in microphones on this telephone works well from anywhere in my office and I have to be careful not to talk too loudly into the phone, which I used to have do with my old SoundPoint. Making and taking calls is simple with this telephone and I am very satisfied with my purchase.
The drawbacks I have found - The speed dial menu system is still a bit old fashioned and therefore a bit clunky to use. However, speed dial functionality has been improved over the 1988 model I had before by allowing caller ID entries to be saved directly into speed dial. Also, in this new version of the SoundPoint telephone there is some excessive "dead time" after you hit the flash key to pick up another call. This may have a configuration parameter to fix the flash delay, but the setup menu isn't intuitive enough to let you know if that parameter will fix the dead time or not. The book is also not clear on what all of the options parameters really do.
Outstanding sound quality.......2007-08-29
I've been using this phone for a few weeks, and the sound quality (speaker and receiver) is excellent. The phone doesn't have a lot of bells & whistles - basic speed dialing, caller ID, conferencing capability. The speaker phone is outstanding for a desktop phone - I've tried lots of the "consumer" brands and none of them had a speaker phone that was even mediocre. I also like the voice mail indicator, if you use the phone company's voice mail feature.
Bottom line: good basic two-line phone with an excellent speaker phone.
Help for a hearing impaired home-office user........2007-06-12
After several disappointing hearing assisted and speakerphones results for a home office needing two lines, the Polycom SE-220 speaker phone has ended our search. The user can not only hear and be heard, but with a hands free bonus. Single user operation does not need the multiple microphones of higher priced Polycom business conferencing products. Based on previous reviews, both the power and phone lines are surge protected and we have had no problems from occasional fluctuations experinced here. Works for us!
Disappointing product from the polycom brand.......2007-05-19
Having been a long time user of Polycom's higher-end conference room phones, I purchased this lower-end office phone with confidence. Unfortunately, this product hasn't lived up to my expectations of quality.
Specific complaints: The speakerphone experience is relatively low quality compared to the higher end polycom phones, both in terms of speaker quality and microphone pickup. The microphone is particularly bad with multiple local participants in the room (something noted by Polycom in the documentation). Worst of all, the speakerphone has a *terrible* audible interference problem with my GSM based Blackberry -- even if the phone is not in use! -- requiring me to sit the phone on the other side of the office. The GSM buzzing interference is worse than any other electronics product I've ever used including low-grade computer speakers. Also, the clock can't keep time -- drifts by about 10 minutes a week.
I'm a fan of Polycom in general, but in this case learned that it's probably worth spending the extra dollars on one of the higher-end models.

Overall everthing i expected - tremendous quality of speakerphone lets confrence calls pass at great clip. Only changes i would make are the screen should be backlight and the menu is clunky to quickly get to missed calls and then a quick callback

Excellent phone from my side. However I have asked a few callers about the clarity while I was talking on the speaker phone. Most advised that I sounded like I was talking in a barrel. I tried it with just the front mic and with the rear mic engaged. Neither got perfect grades from my callers, and neither was as perfect as the AT&T Speaker Phone I use in the office.

As an engineering contractor I travel to many client offices during the day and use many types of office phones. I purchased this phone for one of the desks in my small engineering office back in 2006. When this phone works it is the best office phone available at any price. Since the phone was purchased, it has been replaced 3 times during the waranty period due to severe failures. Polycom has told me these failures are due to its connection to a "digital" phone line, but my phone service provider insists that my phone lines are both analog (Qwest says that they have no digital phone lines in my area). Anyway, I am searching the web now looking for a different phone to purchase. I am also about to call Polycom to report anothher failure with this phone and have it replaced yet again under warranty.
I have just read through the reviews again for this product to see if other people have had similar experiences. I find that many people have experience the same problems that I have. Interestingly, some people report that their phones are working fine. My Polycom SE-225 also works great for about 2 to 3 months before it experiences a failure. By the way, I purchased a commercial quality uninteruptible power supply after the first failure, but the next two phones also failed even with the phone power cord and phone line protected from line surges.

My partner and I each have a Polycom Soundpoint Pro SE-225. I bought them in March of 2005. August '05 mine went dead and I had to send it in for a new one. My partners went dead 2 months after mine and she got a refurb. Both times line two died. A year later, her line two is out again.
Polycom gave me these choices since it is out of warranty. Send it in and wait 30 days for a refurb for about $135 plus $35RMA charge, 10-day turn around for $175 plus $35 RMA charge or Emergency plan $227 + $35RMA. Total: $262 (next day shipping). I found a new one at Office depot for $199.99. Polycoms logic is pretty mind boggling when it comes to customer service. They oughtta charge about $50 bucks to fix it and charge for shipping that's it. Their pricing structure is not well thought out and it's an insult to the customer.
Other than that, the phone is excellent when its not having a problem. My only gripe is the display is not lighted. So if it's dark you can't see caller I.D. which is kinda dumb.
For the money, not at all reliable.......2007-08-17
I work from my home office, and am on the phone an average of 5 hours a day. It is essential that I have a clear, reliable speakerphone. Unfortunately, Polycom's Soundpoint Pro SE-225 did not deliver in either case.
I have had three of these phones in the last year, two of which were replacements from Polycom. All three had the same problem - suddenly the phone will not recognize digit dialing. The first replacement came from Polycom and worked for three months, the second for about nine, and now my warranty is out and Polycom will not address that this is a recurring problem. Effectively I have a $250 lump of plastic that now must be thrown away.
Additionally, audio quality, both incoming and outgoing, are marginal at best. Often incoming call volumes on speakerphone will randomly drop to inaudible levels. Resetting the phone resolves this temporarily, but it does return. For outgoing calls I am often told that my volume is very low, and the only resolution is to put my mouth right next to the microphone.
Polycom, for what its worth, is a well-known company. I have used them in corporate environments around the world. However, their products are marginal at best, and their support is abysmal. While it may be more effective in corporate environment where a $200+ phone can be thrown away, in the home consumer market this is not acceptable.
I encourage others to look elsewhere, which I am once again now forced to do.
Speakerphone Good - But Problems.......2007-04-28
I have two of these phones in different locations. The speakerphone generally works very well, but occasionally at full volume gets into a feedback loop that can only be stopped by muting the microphone. Unfortunately, on most calls, I need to go to full volume, especially on conference calls. People always complain about not being able to hear me well when on the corded handset. I would replace these phones if I could find something better, but can't.

THE PHONE WORKS ABOUT AVERAGE EXCEPT FOR THE CALLER ID FEATURE WHICH IS PRACTICALLY USELESS. THE SCREEN ON WHICH THE NAME AND NUMBER OF THE CALLER IS DISPLAYED IS VERY SMALL AS IS THE PRINTING AND WHEN THE PHONE IS HUNG ON THE WALL IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO READ ANYTHING ON THE SCREEN WITHOUT BENDING DOWN ABOUT 12 INCHES BELOW THE PHONE. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PHONE IF YOU WANT TO HAVE CALLER ID.
