Customer Reviews:
Great phone! very easy to use and cool features.......2007-12-28
I recently had to replace the household phones and ended up getting this set to replace the ones that got fried in a bad storm that we had.
I'm very satisfied with these phones. They are great!
Pros:
Sleak looking, and functional!
Speaker phone on handsets is great and clear.
Hold function is a great add!
Voicemail playback on the handsets (makes life all the easier!)
Headset plugin on handsets
long battery life
program your contacts on one phone and copy them to the rest of the handsets (I love this feature, no need to program the same information 3 or more times, just send the contacts to the other phones in a couple steps.)
Ringer and volume settings (very easy to adjust the volume in all areas of the phone as well as very easy to change the ringer to something else as well)
Caller ID and Phone book browsing: click the appropriate easy to find button then just go up or down, it's that simple. in the phone book you can press the key that corresponds to the letter and find that entry faster.
Expandable to 10 handsets (very nice for me as we have a large house and may need to add another handset or 2)
Cons: This is the reason for my 4 star rating.
I've noticed that on a lot of new phones they don't work well with all of the phone systems for caller ID redialing. If someone calls you out of your area code this phone will not allow for a 1 to be placed in front of that number. There is no setting to activate this feature or deactivate it. The only plus side to this problem is that if some one from your local calling area calls you can actiave an option to take out your local area code from the number so it will just dial the main 7 digits. But you have to write down out of area calls and redial them adding a 1 infront of the number.
I find the lack of a feature for this rather inconsiderate for a lot of users. What is even more rediculous is that I have yet to find a newer phone that has the ability to place the 1 before the number. Not every area of the US allows for a 1 to not be used yet, my area included. They added the ability to take the area code out so why can't they add the ability to add or not add the 1 before long distance numbers.
If it weren't for all the other great features of this phone I would have sent it back.
I hope this review was helpful to you as a potential purchaser of this phone.
I only give them 4 stars because it seems that no one wants to give you the option to either have a 1 in front of the number or not.
Be warned: Uniden phones pulled the finish off our furniture! .......2007-12-27
STAY AWAY FROM THESE UNIDEN PHONES! THEY ECHOED DURING USE - WHO WANTS TO HEAR YOUR OWN VOICE ECHOING BACK AT YOU? BUT WORSE - WHEN WE MOVED THE PHONES TO DUST, THE TWO CHARGING UNITS PULLED THE FINISH OFF OUR GOOD FURNITURE! UNIDEN'S RESPONSE: IT WAS YOUR FAULT FOR PLACING THE PHONES ON YOUR FURNITURE NOT OURS. TOO BAD A WARNING ISN'T IN THE UNIDEN MANUAL! SO SAVE YOUR MONEY AND THE COST OF REPAIRING YOUR FURNITURE AND DON'T BUY UNIDEN!
PICTURE WITH THE PHONE IS MISLEADING.......2007-12-08
The only reason I bought this phone is because I thought I was getting the answering machine base with a handset and TWO more handsets. Was very disappointed when I only got the answering machine base with the ONE handset.
static is a problem.......2007-11-27
I have these phones and there seems to be static on the lines - also the charge does not last as long as my previous phones
Best phone I ever owned .......2007-10-13
For me,the two most important things are clear reception, and range. Both are excellent. This is the best phone that I have owned yet.

Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT!!.......2007-12-31
Great phone at a great price! Very easy to program. I got this phone for my aunt and uncle who are older and they love it!
Another good one by Uniden.......2007-11-04
After my last Uniden died, I went out and bought a v-tech. It cost more (which in turn should have meant it WAS BETTER, right? wrong.) plus it stated right on the front of the box, "recommended for wifi"-and as a vonage user, that was awesome. I plug it in and I can't hear the person on the other end, they can't hear me. I check my phone line with my phone company, they run a test, I go through all of this hassle. I call the store I bought it from, and I can't return it. After all this I came online to my very trustworthy Amazon seller, and I purchased another Uniden...and I will forever on.
The phone itself is very simplistic, not complicated at all. It has the regular features we use everyday (called ID, call waiting ID, voicemail, speed dial) and even some we don't (memos- records up to 10 minutes of any conversation: please read the fine print on this one though guys!)
Overall I just love the phone. Uniden has never let me down in the past, it's clear, has many options, and is a great product.
Exactly what I expected.......2007-09-10
This phone works great. Exactly as described. If you don't need anything fancy, this is the phone for you.
Good but not good enough.......2007-05-31
One of the most important features for me in a telephone is that it must have speakerphone capability, since I'm using it for hours at a stretch, attending meetings and conference calls. I purchased this phone because the speaker phone was one of its listed capabilities, but to my surprise, it just didn't have it :(. Wrong advertisement perhaps. Anyhow, with that exception, the phone performs great otherwise. If speakerphone is a must then this is not for you. That is why I give it 3 stars - it would be a 5 otherwise...

Excellent quality great price can't beat uniden.......2007-09-11
I owned a 2.4 ghz uniden phone. I have voip service and this works great with it. The sound is clear and no hums or static. I highly reccomend this phone for any voip user. I have had other manufacturers in the past but Uniden is by far the best.
Issue after issue with this phone. Not worth purchasing........2007-06-25
I just recently purchased this phone and have been using it for a little over a month now. The phone works good but does INTERFERE with our wireless Internet. Often times people ask me where I am or if I'm outside because the phone sounds extremely crackly (on their end). Also, this phone's base station has very short-range before I'll lose signal. Being that this phone has such short range, from the base station, whenever I pick-up the phone to make a call it takes a while to search for the base station and in some instances CAN'T FIND IT. Whenever the phone can't find the base station I'll have to walk several rooms over so that I'm within 10 feet or so of the base which is absolutely ridiculous and defeats the purpose of having this phone as a multi-room setup!
One of the biggest downfalls, besides wireless interference and short-range base station, and I can't believe that they would even sell a phone with this issue is that YOU CAN'T EDIT NUMBERS IN THE PHONE BOOK WITHOUT ERASING THEM FIRST. This is absolutely ridiculous that you can't move the cursor to insert numbers like a "1" to the beginning of a number or just correct a mistake you made. This means that if someone calls you and you want to save their number you have to write it down and then add it to the phone book so you can include a "1" at the beginning or the phone can't make the call. That is just unbelievable and pure implementation laziness.
I've included a list of pros and cons below which I believe outline the many shortcomings of this phone system. This phone was a waste of money and I would've returned it had the 30 days not have come and gone. The next phone I purchase will most definitely be a DECT phone and one without all the issues below.
PROS
- Expandable phone system
- Wall-mountable base unit
- Speakerphone works like a champ (when the phone works)
CONS (too many)
- Interferes with wireless Internet
- Base station has very short-range before signal is lost
- Can't edit numbers in the phone book (without erasing it, just ridiculous)
- Answering machine message sounds horrible
- Local area code isn't dialed for seven-digit numbers (I saved the area code in the settings but never works like it should)
I don't recommend this phone.
Perfect Upgrade.......2007-06-06
I have had this system along with some additional handsets and love it. It is a great looking phone which means I don't mind having them out. It also has a lost phone feature which is nice. It numbers the phones for you which while I would rather name them myself does enable the lost phone feature to work. It's range is really good as we have it hooked up to a VoIP system in a good size house with plaster over drywall lathe (a hard wall for wireless) and have had few connection problems. The screens are very readable and the buttons are very spaced out and easy to read and push. The phone fits in between the neck and ear comfortably for "hands free" as well as in your hand.
Overall this phone far out performs the TRU885 that we had before and had either lost or broken most of the handsets, but again the construction of our house is a torture chamber for wireless signals. I am sorry to see that Amazon has upped their shipping time on this product, but I wouldn't let that discourage you from buying the product. When I bought my system, it was 3 to 4 weeks and they exceed that time estimate.
A phone that temps you to make and pick up calls.......2007-05-21
I was taking a fair amount of risk when ordering this phone, because it's a new model from Uniden and I couldn't find any user review on the web. It turned out to be worth every penny of it. With a very sleek look, it's easy to set up, has all the functions I ever need--caller id, address book, conference, digital answering system and intercom (walkie-talkie) which is perfect for a family or shared apt. It feels great in the hand and the sound is crystal clear. The only imperfectness I noticed is that there's a little voice delay, which could very possibly be due to my VOIP service. My roommates love it too and I'm happy to have picked it.

Great Phone!.......2007-08-05
I love this phone. It is sleek, efficient and has so many functions. Very easy to use and takes up hardly any space. The reception is so much clearer than my previous cordless phone.
a little noice in the background.......2007-06-05
The phone works well. However, from time to time you can experience some voice in the background. Easy to use.

A two-handset cordless phone system from Uniden, the DXAI5588-2 delivers a high level of signal clarity and comes loaded with features. Caller ID and call waiting compatible, the DXAI5588-2 has a 30-number caller ID memory, as well as a 10 number speed dial for your most important numbers.

A built-in digital answering system provides up to 13 minutes of recording time, with a selectable 1 or 4-minute maximum message length. Memo recording allows you to record messages and notes for later recall, while remote message check lets you stay on top of messages, even while you are away from home. Customer Reviews:
Only one at a time.........2007-12-07
The DXAI 5588-2 has many nice features. However, I've purchased many cordless phones in years past and never had a set of 2 that you could not use together. If you are upstairs and your wife takes a call for you downstairs, the upstairs Uniden phone is useless because only one phone can be used for incoming calls.
Yet another crummy phone.......2007-11-29
Bought this about a year ago. Despite the two handset bases placed in optimum conditions, we couldn't get a signal in over half of a 2400 sq' one-level house. The call quality was static-filled unless you were standing in the same room as the base unit. Battery life degraded quickly; 6 months in, I had to buy a pair of replacement rechargeables. They've also lasted 6 months and both handsets resumed beeping low battery warnings 10 seconds into the call before abruptly ending the connection. If you press handset buttons or pick the handset up off the answering machine during message playback (say, to start punching in the phone number as your caller recites them), the message playback stops. What a miserable phone and into the bin it goes. I'll never buy Uniden again.
Not very good........2007-10-08
I have owned this phone for about 1 year. The answering machine is now full of static. Most messages left I cannot understand. Also, from the beginning I could be sitting a few feet from the base and if I turned my head wrong the line would be full of static.
Static is terrible!.......2007-09-14
We have owned these phones for almost a year. They seemed fine for awhile. I like that they have a volume control. I don't like that you can't listen on both handsets at the same time. These have gotten progressively worse in the static arena. At this point there is a terrible humming on both handsets. Changing the "channel" doesn't seem to help at all. I would definitely NOT buy these again and wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
Into the garbage with this one.......2007-08-29
I've tried every place in my house can't hear a thing on either handset even with the volume on high. Most of the time all I get is static. I should have read the reviews before I purchased this item. Apparently Uniden doesn't intend on staying in business if they allow their name on a piece of garbage like this.

Great phones.......2007-12-26
I have one of these phones hooked to my computer and two handsets throughout the house. I have used them for some time now with no problems at all. My hearing isn't real good, but I have no problem with these phones. My wife and I think they are just great, and highly recommend them.

excellent product for the price.......2007-11-16
We have had these phones for over 3 years and haven't had a single problem with them. I especially like the 2-way intercom and handset finder features.
Good Product.......2007-06-27
Lots of features. Good phone, expandable to add other handsets. I would reccommend. Unlike my old cordless, only draback is when you clear caller ID on one handset, it does not clear it on the other handsets.
Features Fall Short of Promise.......2007-06-02
We've had this system, expanded to 10 handsets, for 6 months. When our old phones and baby monitor died I wanted to buy a new set that could double as an intercom system and baby monitor, both of which are features advertised with this system. I found to my regret that this is a decent expandable system, but does not live up to its promise regarding advanced features.
PROS:
- Expands to 10 handsets fine. The extra regular handsets interchange with the original chargers fine. Only the 2 waterproof handsets have to use their different base.
- Voice mail indicator light on the top of each handset works with the phone company's indicator tone (i.e. stutter dial tone).
- Dedicated voice mail button can be programmed to dial your retrieval phone number & code for one touch message retrieval.
- Each handset has a number (based on the order in which you register them with the base) and a nickname. When you turn on room monitoring or intercom, it gives you the list in numeric order to scroll through, but also shows you the nicknames ("Kitchen", "Johns Room", etc.).
- Redial has the last 3 numbers dialed, not just the last 1.
- Good backlighting shows up in the dark.
CONS:
- None of the bases are wall mountable.
- Each handset must be configured individually. The phone book can be entered on one then told to copy to each of the others (one at a time). All other features including speed dial settings, voice mail key, ring tones, etc. have to be set on each handset.
- Ring tone choices are poor, and grating. There are no remotely "normal" ring tones that are not either gratingly high pitched and metallic, or too soft to be heard. We resorted to the musical tunes but the handsets don't ring at the same time, so it's still a cacaphony.
- The intercom feature has it's own painful ringtone that can't be changed.
- The "intercom" is more accurately termed "in house calling". The receiving handset rings, and a person must pick it up and answer it. There's no way to make it automatically go to speakerphone. So if the kids choose not to answer the phone, you can't just tell them to come downstairs to dinner anyway. So much for our plan to quit shouting up the stairs! There is one brand that works the "correct" way. Unfortunately, I forgot which it was, since I ran out of time and motivation to package up 10 Unidens and send them back in order to by the other system.
- Speakerphone won't turn on until after a few rings when calling out. You can't turn on speakerphone then dial. Our old AT&T 2 handset system allowed us to hit the speaker button to get a dialtone, then dial the #.
- Speakerphone volume max is low; it's borderline if you're using the room monitoring feature for listening to a sleeping baby.
- When room monitoring is on you cannot make or receive calls. When there is an incoming call you'll get one odd tone, then you have to quickly turn of monitoring and then answer the call.
- Handsets cannot be used as monitoring receivers (the listening end) while on the base. So they have to be well charged ahead of time, and may not make it through the night.
Recommendation: All of the manufacturers have their user manuals online. Before buying a system, download the manual and read through the details of how the features work. If I had done that, I would not have purchased this phone.
Nice phone.......2007-04-12
This phone has tons of features for the price. Sound quality is very good, however, range from base could be a little better.

Great phone.......2007-01-05
The phone does everything that is promised. The sound quality is good. The navigation is really easy. The speaker phone works well. The ring is pleasant. The buttons have a nice feel. It's easy to hold and nicely compact. I plan to get a few more to replace my other phones.
works just as I'd expect.......2007-01-04
This is my second uniden cordless phone purchase, the first was for home, this one I use in the office. I do a lot of talking as part of my job, and I spend at least four hours a day using this product. Either with my headset or directly against my ear, the sound is clear, crisp without any distortion at all. The range is pretty impressive. When I need to have a private call I frequently walk away from the office into the courtyard outside. This phone continues to work through walls, and trees a half a block away from the base station. I highly recommend it.
A very good choice if you're looking for a handset speakerphone........2006-03-12
I bought this phone because I wanted a good handset speakerphone, so I can talk on the phone while my hands are busy without fumbling with a headset. This phone got great reviews (see the reviews for the
Uniden TRU8860-2 5.8 GHz Digital Cordless Phone with Dual Handsets and Caller ID), and in general I've been very pleased. Now I can talk on the phone while cooking, and waiting on hold for half an hour is no longer painful. I like it so much I'm even going to buy another one of these for a friend. I would have given it five stars except that the rings are pretty bad.
Speakerphone and Clarity: The most important feature to me is the speakerphone, and it works great. I can hear it very well even from a distance, and unless I'm very far from the headset no one on the other side can even tell I'm on speakerphone. Other reviews have said the sound is tinny or blurry, but I have had no problems with it, either on speakerphone or speaking directly into the headset. I haven't, however, compared it directly to other recently made phones.
Volume and Rings: I have quite sensitive ears, so a very important feature to me is volume control, both of the ringer and the speaker. This phone has six! volume levels for the speaker, and separate settings for speaker phone and normal, which I find extremely convenient. I often have to adjust the volume depending on the other phone, and this gives me enough range to always get an audible but not painful level. The volume control of the ringer is less flexible. I had to set it on a relatively soft ring since the louder ones were annoying and too loud. It's soft enough that if it's next to me in bed and it rings when I'm asleep it doesn't scare me half to death. However, I'm not sure I can always hear it from another room in my apartment. (I have another phone I use just for the ring.)
Size and comfort This phone seemed quite small compared to my previous phone, but I find it comfortable to hold. Most of the time, however, I don't hold it at all because I just leave it on speakerphone! The buttons are responsive and easy to dial.
User interface: Of all the many features, the only ones I ever use are turning on and off the speaker phone, and redial. Once you hit "talk" and dial, there's an annoying delay before you can turn on the speakerphone. However, if you just hit "speaker" initially instead of "talk" this isn't an issue. There is no redial button but there are up and down buttons that let you easily scroll through recently placed calls. The most problematic design issue is that it's relatively easy to hit the talk button by mistake and turn off the phone in the middle of a call.
Charge: the charge lasts about three days for me when I leave the phone off the base, which I find perfectly adequate.
Signal Range: Other reviewers have complained that the range is very small. I've used the phone only inside my small apartment, so don't know how far it can travel from the base.
A bit disappointed.......2006-01-02
I just bought this Uniden Tru8860 - charged it up the full amount of time required. It is a bit staticky and muffled. When I talked to a friend she could not hear all of my words and thought I was talking with a blanket over the speaker. Could not hear her that well either. The ring choices are a bit annoying and tinny sounding. I have put it back in the box and it is being returned tomorrow. My last Uniden which I had for several years was wonderful! Too bad the quality is not the same.

Customer Reviews:
Walk Away.......2007-06-26
I was hoping this phone would be better than my 2.4GHZ Uniden.
The 2.4 has a range of about 125ft. I can keep the non-base headset in the shop at 100 ft and it works fine.
The 5588 starts hissing and popping at the back door -- one floor under the headset. I can't make it 1/3 the distance of the older model. BY the time I get to the shop the phone quits.
So instead of ditching my old 2.4, I've maxed out the recharge ability of both 2.4s. This is really irritating since the 2.4 kills my Wi-Fi connection and the 5.8 does not.
Time to buy another phone set and since I can't count on Uniden, it will be a Panasonic. Both Unidens go into the garabge (after recycling the batteries).
Does the job & inexpensive.......2007-03-28
We have these land lines in several rooms and they have worked just fine over the last three or four years. I like the fact that you can add phones to the system. We had some other larger Uniden phones that work as the "main" phones and the compatibility is perfect. They even work pretty good away from the base set when you are outside in the backyard. The features like caller ID etc. is a bonus. I must admit the phone book feature has never been used but we could if needed. If I had one complaint it might be the size is too small. I think they wanted to have the cell phone size but it is not the same. For man size hands the keypad is a little small but you get used to it by using corners of your thumb. Otherwise everything works fine for these extra phones to have in other rooms. I'm not sure why one of the reviewers had so much static but there is no problem whatsoever here. The only time we have had static was in a bad storm but I believe that is normal. We bought them for the inexpensive price to have as extra phones and they do the job. If you want some supplemental phones these will do the job.

Amazon.com Product Description
Note: The Uniden TRU5885-2 is no longer being manufactured. You may want to consider purchasing instead the newer Uniden TRU8885-2 5.8 GHz Digital Cordless Phone with Dual Handsets and Answering System.
Some of us need much more from our phones than just a little redial button. Sometimes a flash feature simply isn't enough. For users who demand extensive features, Uniden's TRU5885-2 delivers. Functioning at a quiet, nearly interference-free 5.8 GHz, the two handsets use digital spread spectrum transmission for exceptional range and minimal static. The three-line handset LCDs work in conjunction with caller ID services, storing 100 names and numbers in addition to the speed-dial presets.
The dual speakerphones (both on the handsets and base) let you talk hands-free or get the whole family in on the conversation. The phone also features an integrated digital answering machine with all the features you'd expect, like remote message check. And yes, the phone does feature the basics, like flash, pause, hold, and redial with memory storage of the last three numbers dialed. In addition, you can dial either from the handsets or from the base. Note that this phone is not expandable beyond the two included handsets and chargers. NiMH batteries and a one-year warranty are included.
What's in the Box

Customer Reviews:
5.8 is not the same as 2.4.......2006-05-06
A previous reviewer (Murphy) misunderstood what the difference between 5.8 and 2.4 is in these phones. He said "The range on this phone is SUPPOSED to be more than TWICE that of a 2.4Gz phone. "
If he would have called Uniden, Panasonic, Sony, etc, they would have told him that the range for a 5.8 phone is actually supposed to be LESS than 2.4 but A MUCH CLEARER CALL and MORE SECURE.
I tested this with 2 phones each from Panasonic, and Uniden (2.4 and 5.8) and compared them also to my old 900Mhz Sony and 900Mhz Uniden. The 2.4Mhz phones had the best distance and the 5.8Mhz had the best quality sound.
Best Phone Yet.......2005-08-23
This phone promises alot. And it delivers! Sound of the answering system is clean and clear. Just read the product info-yeah it does all that! The amazon price with super saver matched ebay so why not buy it new in the box?
Had it one year and audio cuts out -- no help from Uniden!.......2004-09-22
I've had this expensive system for one year and it is currently not functional. The audio cuts out randomly -- you can sometimes hear very faintly, but usually, not at all. I changed batteries, but the problem is now worse. The "help" offered by Uniden was to use only THEIR batteries. SO now I can spend another $30 on more batteries and that doesn't guaruntee that the problem will be solved. Not bloody likely! Crap product, crap service!
Rock solid, crystal clear, great features (READ MANUAL!).......2004-07-09
This is a really good phone that's taken a lot of drops and keeps on ticking. It's solidly constructed, well-engineered, and built much better than the GE/Motorola disposable phones. Plus, it looks a heck of a lot better than the other phones. I've had this since it first came out, and there's been no problems despite the accidental drops or what have you of daily heavy usage. The built-in speakerphone on each handset continues to be a stunning feature. Also, the battery life is ridiculously long, and this makes up for the lack of a battery meter. Think of this phone as a Toyota and the others as GM. Which would you trust if they made your life support systems? Enough said.
The only thing that could have been improved upon:
-Expandability of handsets limited (not really a problem for most).
-There is no instant synchronization of stored numbers from one phone to the other (something I miss about my old Sony phone).
-As mentioned before, the only warning of a low battery is an audible alert/led msg (while you are using it) that the battery is low. From that point on, you only have about a minute or so of talk time left.
Like anything in life, you get what you put into it. Read the manual. Learn what this phone allows you to do. Despite a previous poster's comments, this phone easily allows you to toggle on/off the 1- (by pressing *) and the area code (by pressing #) of your caller ID listings. It's in the manual, if the previous poster had actually bothered to read it before posting his mental spasms (a priceless moment).
There is a newer model out (TRU8885-2) that addresses the few shortcomings of this phone and adds some cool new ones like a smaller and better base station, albeit imo it does not look as nice.

disappointed.......2004-07-07
my fiance and I have both had uniden 900 megahertz for almost a decade. When we met, we both had the same phone and continued to use them for five more years! I loved uniden, so I was really excited when this new cool looking phone came out. we waited for the price to drop somewhat and finally bought it. Well, I'm not so impressed. the main thing is that it cuts out or breaks up when i'm in my office. Every phone conversation I have to walk into the living room b/c it gets somewhat better reception out there. it's worse than my cell phone by far. i don't really use the fancy features. answering machine works well, it's very modern looking, but i'm upset every time I have to move around the house to get good reception. I think there have to be better phones out there, esp for the $$$$.
