Great Phone But NO Headset Jack.......2007-12-26
Purchased this phone when my older (must have been over 10 years old) wireless VTech performed a nose dive onto the floor and could not recover. I stayed with VTech and bought in to the new DECT technology even though I didn't seem to be experiencing any issues with my wireless router and phone sound quality.
The VTech 6042 is a nice phone with good feature set. The base has a much smaller profile than many older phones and the handsets sit upright in the cradle, so you'll save on some desk space with this new cradle.
The handsets are light, sleek and comfortable and easy to hold. The audio quality is very good, the mute button easy to find when you need it, volume controls for ringer and handset work well and the headset doesn't interfere with hearing aids.
The only fault I could find was with the lack of a headphone jack on the handset. If you are one of those that have long conversations on the phone and have come to rely on a wired headphone attached to the handset, look elsewhere - the VTech 6042 does not provide headphone jacks, so you'll have to live with the built in speakerphone feature. If headphone jack is a MUST HAVE along with DECT technology, look to the Uniden DECT2080 instead.

Many of these phones are defective and will not hold a charge. Vtech replaced mine in two days (sent me new phones first with prepaid shipping to return the old ones.) The new phones work great.
Do not return them to the store. You are going to get more from the same batch of bad phones.
Every company has problems at one time or another. It is how promptly and courteously you handle the problems that really matters. I'm happy with the phones.
Good basic function, strange design choices........2007-12-11
I admit I was taken in with its sexy design and slim handsets. Fortunately, this phone does the basics fairly well. The sound, both from the handset and from the base unit, is very good -- clear, crisp, realistic. The backlit handsets are easy to read, which makes the operation easier and the blue color makes it quite attractive. The LED display is clear and bright, with a blinking number for messages, illuminated button for whether the answering machine is on, and a charge light (on both the base unit and satellite base). The answering machine works very well and is intuitive to set up, so this is the phone's best feature. (It comes with a built-in message that is permanently saved, so it can be recalled at any time.) The microphone must be a decent one, as it records pretty well, although my voice sounds a bit muffled. However, it is better than some other phones I've used. Speakerphone is excellent.
The handsets are slim, so fit into the hand easily and comfortably and the base unit and satellite are small, so they take up little space. The base and satellite each have large, silver-colored toggle buttons that take you to the various functions.
There are some design problems. Headsets are not possible. The slim handsets are comfortable, but sit in the base and satellite units at an angle large enough that you must be careful how you replace the handset. I've dropped both handsets a couple of times and as another reviewer has mentioned, it doesn't appear that they will withstand many more trips to the floor. The slim design also means you cannot rest the handset between your shoulder and ear. Setting up a directory is non-intuitive, requiring going through a sub-menu selection process that is irritating. Redial isn't simply a matter of hitting the redial button -- you must hit call, then redial. However, I've found this doesn't always work. I unplugged both the satellite and base unit during a lightning storm and had to reset everything, meaning I even lost my entire directory and had to re-enter it. Very annoying. I don't know if V-Tech has designed the ring feature this way, but I haven't figured out how to adjust the rings so they are identical. I'd rather not have two different kinds of ringing at the same time, but apparently this is something I must live with. Deleting messages must occur while a message is playing and cannot happen while the message and its date/time stamp is being announced. The lack of a keypad on the base unit was something I didn't think I'd need, but now I wish this phone has one. If you're listening to a recorded menu of choices ("Press 1 for customer service...", etc.), there is often no pause once you press the number on the handset, so you've missed part of the next message during the time it takes you to get the handset back to your ear.
Although the phone does basic things pretty well, there are enough design issues that I simply cannot recommend it. 3 stars is generous.

This is a great phone. I ordered it when my husband came back from Germany and it arrived with in a couple of days. It's not bulky and looks great. The only problem is that there is not a slot for a headset. But great phone and would surely recommand it to everyone.

Good phone, but deceptive pictures.......2007-11-07
It is nice to have a corded phone with caller-id built in. But the caller-id screen is not lighted or backlit. The picture clearly shows it is, but it is not and this is very irritating. You cannot see the caller-id unless you have another light on. For the price though it is still a pretty good deal. Do a search for 'bedroom phone' and you will see a few that are backlit/lighted, but they are quite a bit more expensive.

what can i say? i am home sick so decided to order my "in case of emergencies land line" online. the phone is slim and stays out of the way, and for all intensive purposes works...somewhat. you have to play with the cords so there isn't a constant static. whomever calls you can hear you just fine, however, you will endure sporatic static on your end. the caller id works just fine, and like most individual units, blinks when you have a new call. the ease of use for setup and everyday function make this phone user friendly.

I purchased the AT&T Expansion Headset for my AT&T base phone system. I now have the AT&T base phone system with two additional headsets throughout my house. The look of the phone is excellent and clarity and cleariness when speaking on the phone is wonderful! Bought the complete AT&T system with three sets included. Because it worked so well I added the fourth handset. I specifically bought the one that goes with my unit. It is the exactly the same as my original three sets and works well. The only complaint is that for some reason and unlike the other three sets you cannot access the menu from this unit but everything else seems to work fine including caller ID.

I believe I expanded a 6012B system (it looks almost exactly the same as the E598 handset) from two to four without a hitch. Frankly, I chose this expansion handset (and the original handsets) because I liked how they looked (e.g., sort of a sleek, minimal handset design with blue key lighting), but both the original and the expansions have performed solidly (e.g., calls don't drop with good quality voice, decent range, and battery life).
Just be sure to determine the maximum number of handsets your original system will handle before you buy any expansion handsets.

I can use it all over my house (3500 sq feet) and this phone had sound quality and range like no phone I've ever had. haven't had it long enough to know about the battery "issues" but I tend to leave the phone in the recharge cradle so for me that's no big deal. I'm happy to burn the extra 7 calories and put the handset back where it belongs.

I've had this phone for about a month now and think it's a really good one. It's very easy to set up and to keep clean. The display is much better then the last VTech I had, and the voice mail is as good as I could ask for. The speaker phone works great and the price is right. I do recommend this phone.

The phone is great as far as sound quality. However the battery life is terrible. Also there is no battery life indicator to let you know when its low. You can see a battery icon only while the phone is on the charger. Even then it doesn't indicate full or low. Only that its charging. It dies after being off the charger for only 12 hrs. Talk time is like 2.5 hrs. I just returned it. Uniden is much better for battery life.

Positives: When your mobile phone gets a call, you can answer any house phone to pick up the call. That works really well.
If you put your mobile in a strong signal location, these handsets increase the voice quality.
Features that should be there: Passing contacts from phone/base to phone/base. Extra handset price. Registration of handsets is more of a hassle.
Should have these features (doesn't):
Pass contacts from mobile phone via bluetooth (none available).
Default phone type as mobile (for use without a land line).
Global settings for handsets controlled from base.
That said, the ability to route mobile incoming phone calls to the home phone system is enough for us to justify this as it will allow us to more easily drop the land line.
This technology has great potential, but for now, it's simply ok.

The systems works pretty well as an answering machine. As others have said the independent directories are a negative. I primarily wanted the head set to be able to answer both land-line phones and cell phones: it won't. I couldn't find this out before purchase. The head set range is also much more limited than normal blue-tooth.

Great remote extention telephone. Bluetooth auto reconnect works about half the time with my blackberry. If it can't connect, you then have to delete it from the base and re-pair. Takes less than 2 minutes but I have to do it three times a week. Really irritating. Called ATT and they said no phone updates yet. Too bad. Otherwise good product.

Considering my prior experience with an AT&T cordless phone (E5965C), and some of the negative reviews posted here, it was with reluctance that I purchased this unit along with an expansion handset (EP562). This is the only cordless phone I found that has all the features I'm looking for (bluetooth capability, being able to listen to messages from both the handsets and the base unit, a spare battery stored in the base unit allowing the phone to be used during power outages, blinking light on each handset for new messages).
I've had the phone for about a week now and have had no issues at all. The phones were a breeze to set up and configure. The user interface is easy to understand and navigate. Voice quality is very good. The Bluetooth connection works very well for me. I've yet to experience a disconnected call.
Battery life is much improved over my other AT&T phone. The handsets can go more than 1 day without being charged.
My only complaints are a few relatively minor issues. The system has a telephone directory where you can store names and telephone numbers. Directory entries are stored separately on each handset and the base unit. There is no way to transfer directory entries from one handset to the other or to the base unit. With a set-up like mine if I want to have the same directory on the two handsets and the base unit they must all be entered manually. Rather tedious. I like the idea of having separate directories but it would be nice to have the ability to transfer individual entries, or the entire directory, between handsets and the base unit.
The same goes for the caller ID log. The system stores the 100 most recent incoming calls. These calls must be cleared off of each handset and the base unit individually. It would be nice to have a global setting that would clear out the Caller ID Log on the entire system. Again, minor issues.. :)

I purchased the i5803 accessory handset to add to my existing system. The integration was seamless. I now have four handsets on the system and they all work just fine.

My family already owned four of these phones in my house and loves them. My sister recorded her own voice so when they ring my parents know its her. I bought one because of the long battery life and compatibility to the other phones in the house. There are newer versions of this phone which have the color and a little more flare but personally I do not need the bells and whistles in a phone.

I have had these phone hand sets for over 10 years but the 2 that are used the most started giving us trouble with the key buttons. I did not want a new phone system and looked for new ones in the store but they do not sell this kind anymore. I was real happy that I found them on Amazon. I put the old ones in the house where we could still use them but not often and replaced them with the new hand sets. Each handset works off the main station. All you have to do is plug the charger in a wall socket for each handset. You only need one phone connection for the base. I now have 6 handsets working in my home. Each one will hold 50 telephone numbers, has caller ID and can be used as an intercom between all the handsets. I love these phones and am so glad that Amazon had them.

This phone was a little frustrating to set up. The basics are very easy but to add names and numbers the phone doesnt give you enough time and you have to start over to do your inputting.
I like to turn off my ringer when I sleep. The headset has a ringer and instructions to turn it off were clear. As I slept I heard the ringer go off. WTH, it must be coming from the base??? No instructions there. Called Vtech and the first agent mentioned the base asking me to pick it up... as I picked it up the cord came out disconnecting the call! I called back and the next agent had no clue where the ringer on the base was - actually stating that the base had NO ringer.
I made sure that when the phone rang the next time I knew where the ringer was coming from and it was the base. I called again and found an agent that knew exactly where the ringer was and how to turn it off the base.
The space for your ear is very small and your ear must be just against this small space or you will hear nothing. I am thinking of getting an ear piece to plug in and see if that would bring up the volume.
Overall, for the price, a good phone that could use some louder sound and clearer detailed instructions or agents that know their products.

Does not register Caller ID every time. Had my sister call and does not register. Also called from my cell phone-nothing. Also did not set time on handset when received first call.

I had bought this phone two years ago.....same company, same model. I couldn't help but notice that the quality of the casing is not the same. It is not as well made as my original phone and feels very lightweight. However, it still has the same great features. My favorite is the ability to turn off the ringer which many phones, even the much more expensive, do not allow. The clarity of the phone is very good. Not a bit of static. It isn't expensive, but with a large family, expensive can be costly. It's already been dropped twice in the first week and it's fine.

They don't tell you this but only one of the phones actually dials out. What this manufacturer was thinking when they made this package is completely unknown. Ostensibly, there is one phone for actually using and the other is one that is paged. You cannot add on or modify the system. The static is nearly always present, you need to change the channels often. Don't waste your money on this system.

You can't be on both handsets at the same time, i.e. 2 people can't pick up to simultaneously speak to the caller - calls have to be "transfered" from one handset to the other via a "transfer" button! They don't tell you this in the description, but now you know why it's so cheap! Pay the extra and get a better model, one where you can be on both handsets simultaneously!

The base failed after 3 days ... the noise was so loud it was unlistenable. I followed each troubleshooting section until there was nothing left on in the house but the phone. Both handsets received the same noise. (The older phone that I replaced was still fine.)
I wrote to the vendor but have not yet received a response.

I purchased this product for home office use. I found the cordless phone to be very clear when talking. Very easy to set up. Plug and play. Does not have voicemail light for services provide by your LEC>
Substandard warranty arrangement.......2007-10-22
I generally like the phone. However, one problem has been that about 5% of the time when I try to use the handset, either starting on the speaker-phone or picking up the handset initially, the other party can not hear me, even though I can hear them. Even if I switch to speaker-phone, the other party is still unable to hear me.
AT&T agrees the phone is defective and can be replaced under warranty. However, they require the phone and all original components be shipped to them in Texas, and then (sometime later) they will send a working phone back. Why they think that a business is able to go several weeks (or more) without a phone is a mystery to me. I called back to ask specifically if they could charge the replacement to my credit card and send it to me before I send my existing one back (most electronics manufactures seem to do this). The rep informed me that they don't have any such capability and cannot send any replacement phones out until the phone being replaced has physically been returned. Fortunately, I am still able to return the phone, but it will be for a refund, not for warranty. And its replacement will not have AT&T on it.
User unfriendly.......2007-07-30
Sound quality is good & the portable unit works great but the base unit is so user unfriendly it is not worth owning. I'm going to end up putting the base in the basement, so I can still use the cordless unit, and putting my old two-line at&t back in my office.
Well designed, a few problems.......2007-06-30
I've probably purchased about 10 2-line phones over the years. The category is always pretty severely hampered in terms of features and usability, and I'm guessing that's because it's in between home use and office use. Nonetheless, two lines can't be that uncommon can it?
Anyway, let me start with the good.
* This is the first 2-line answering machine phone that I could set up completely without a manual. The base station has lots of dedicated buttons that are big, and obvious.
* The corded base combined with a cordless handset is a great idea. It means I don't have to hunt down the handset to use it.
* Decent sound and tone quality when talking to folks, although some describe the sound as a bit "hollow". However, I found that older folks who are hard of hearing can hear my voice very well with this phone.
* There is an option for the answering machine to "chirp" when it has a saved message. Very handy when you walk in the door, you know you have a message without looking at the machine.
* You can charge a 2nd battery in the base unit, this doubles as a battery backup if power goes out. Unfortunately, the 2nd battery is not included.
* A mute button for speaker phone. How many phones don't have this?
* The wireless handsets can be speaker phones as well.
* Overall, the thing feels "natural" to use.
Now the not-so-good:
* The Answering machine works well enough, but sound quality is really marginal. I haven't tried the outgoing message, since I prefer the anonymous outgoing message. But the saved messages have fairly poor quality, like the sampling rate is way too low.
* Entries in the phone book cannot be selected once the phone is off the hook. That means you have to select an entry from the phone book, hit either line1 or line2 speakerphone and then pick up the handset. It's not horrible, just awkward.
* Why will no machine maker include a "save as new" option for messages? This should be a no-brainer, since it's value is immense. Maybe it's too costly to implement.
* Phone book entries put in the base are not pushed out to the handsets and vice-versa. The manual tries to turn this into feature, but it's not.
* speaking of which, why will nobody offer an ability to transfer phone book entries to/from a PC? Or do people like entering phone numbers and names repeatedly?
Overall, you realize you pay huge premium for that 2nd line, and there are tradeoffs, but this appears to be a decent choice given the alternatives. Phones are sort of personal in terms of what you do and don't like, so pay attention to the negative reviews as much as the positive.
Don't buy this phone!.......2007-06-27
Don't buy this phone. It's the worst piece of garbage that I have bought on line. It has the worst sound, cord and cordless, that I have ever heard on a phone. The cordless has no range, it is constantly losing a signal. It seems to sound ok on the other end of a call.
