5 out of 5 stars We love this!.......2007-12-09

I read all about the problems of the HR20 before we got it, but since it had so many features I wanted (like the HDTV!), we got it anyway. Keep in mind most people say the unit was much worse in early 2007. I was kind of dreading getting this, after our last box was such a piece of junk, locking up all the time, and losing the signal right in the middle of shows - almost every day.

I've had this for about 3 months now, and the first month there were a couple issues with it locking up, and onetime losing our recorded shows. We've gotten a couple software updates since then, and have not had any problems the last couple months (Nov-Dec 2007).

We love how it easily records shows, shows the name of the show, date recorded, and if it was in HD or not. We love the fast forward thru commercials, when you see the show and hit Play, it actually backs up a bit for you so you don't miss any of the show!

So the last couple months its been working flawlessly, and we love all the features. I just hooked it up to the Internet and now am getting the DirecTV on Demand, downloading shows and movies from the Internet.

1 out of 5 stars A Lot of Hot Air!.......2007-11-25

We recently got DirecTV after seeing their ad blitz for 75 HD channels. They brag about their "digital picture and sound," and their great customer service.
The truth is the only way to get digital picture and sound is with a HDTV and an HDMI. Their picture is actually worse than the picture we got with Comcast. Not to mention there is no two year agreement with cable, no picture loss when it rains, you do not have to pay for "leased equipment, and you do not need an ugly dish hanging on your house.
When we purchased our most recent HDTV, we figured we would replace the DVR we had with DirecTV and get an HD DVR to replace it.
DirecTV told us we would have to pay $299 for the privlige of leasing their receiver from them. In addition to this we would have to pay $50 because we were a new customer "and had not established a credit history with them." Also, we would have to pay $20 for shipping and handling and extend our contract for another two years.
Maybe DirecTV thinks it is in the cellphone business because all they want to do is lock you into long-term contracts and make you bleed money to them forever. Their symbol should be a ball and chain because that is what they really are. Cable here I come!

1 out of 5 stars this was FREE still not worth it.......2007-11-02

Directv Upgraded me from HDTIVO to the this junk for free, after i got it i realized why it was free, as i said its junk. anyone who has the HDtivo receiver will hate this receiver.

I would have returned the receiver in 15 minutes if i had to pay for it.((((((( i am thinking of returning it even it was free ))))))))))))))
ITS VERY slow, the DVR featured are nothing like TIVO, as i was told they were , i don;t get why one channel keeps 90 min in memory while the other one has None that makes NO sense if i want more than 30 min i would just record it.Why the memory clears when you switch between channels, and when i record a program I do not have the option to skip to the end , of jump forward in 15 min intervals. who ever designed this unit has no IDEA what a DVR should do, i am a very upset as i was forced to upgrade so i could get all the new HD channels that they have been advertising.the old receiver would only get the 7 to 10 stations i have had for the past 2 years
Oh i almost forgot you also have to get a HUGE dish , its so big that it has 2 supporting arms on either side so the wind does not move it. all that said you really do not have much choice except they get the message and do a real upgrade in the HDDVR 21 which should be out soon .....

1 out of 5 stars DirecTV must hate it's customers.......2007-10-25

I, like almost everyone else who's rated this product, wish I could give it 0 stars. I replaced an HR10-250 with this "upgrade" and I couldn't be more unhappy. This unit does not buffer programs if you change the channel, there is no way to change tuners manualy, it only records about 1/2 the series you have it programed to record, it can't tell the difference between first run and re-run (and it often records everything EXCEPT first run even when set to record both) you can't program it to record only at a certain time, there are too many problems with this unit to name them all. Don't accept this unit, and if you have one already return it to DirecTV and tell them to make one that works or you'll go to Dish network. Don't allow them to pawn this inferior piece of junk off on their paying customers. We deserve better.

5 out of 5 stars Works great - they've fixed the bugs.......2007-10-22

I was extremely leery of this product because of all the bad reviews, but I noticed that almost all of the negative experiences people had were from over 6 months ago. Hoping that the bugs have been worked out of the thing, I took the plunge. After some initial setup snafus were worked out, I'm now loving my new HD life.

I previously used the TiVo HD box from DirecTV (HDR-250), which has excellent image quality but was very slow to respond to commands. The new box is very responsive and the image quality is excellent. I'm a professional video editor, so image quality is everything to me; I'm very critical of and distracted by noise and compression artifacts. While not perfect (what is?), the image quality is much better than I had hoped. It's very good.

So far it has not failed to record a show, and it's very easy to set up series recording events and single-record events. I love that an icon is displayed in the program guide when a show is scheduled to record. My TiVo used to drive me bonkers because you could not tell at a glance if a program was going to record or not - this is a feature that my old Ultimate TV (remember them?) box had. My TiVo would also take forever when you hit the record button or set up a Season Pass, displaying the "Please Wait" icon for a full minute while it looked for recording conflicts. The HD-20 records instantly, no waiting at all.

4 out of 5 stars Guess I got the good one............2007-10-20

I guess I got the good one. I've had none of the drop out problems and while I had a problem with the system being VERY slow initially, I called DirecTV and reset the box and it's been great for the last few weeks. The picture is very good, the speed of the system is good, and I've had absolutely NO drop outs of either audio or video since having the system (about 3 months).

As I say, I'm guessing I got the good one (at least for now) but I have absolutely no complaints with the box.

Now if we can just go back to having FREE TV like we had years ago. There's something about paying for television and still having to sit through commercials! :-(

1 out of 5 stars JUNK and a BAD COMPANY.......2007-03-21

Stay away from this receiver and direct tv in general. Had heard all the hype by cable companies, online reviews, etc. but decided to give it a try. Big waste of time.
First the company will blatantly lie to you about what you will receive in high def. For example they'll tell you that you're going to get your local ABC, CBS, ABC affiliates in high-def even if they know better. Then once they've roped you in they admit the truth but give you absolutely no recourse. Why purchase the subscription to only find that you can't watch the super bowl, world series, etc. in high-def? I mean watching baby elephants in the sahara is nice in discovery HD but not too many people have "baby elephant watching parties" while super bowl parties are the norm.
I was a subscriber for less than 48 hours before I opted out to avoid the early termination fee. The receiver itself was below average with the above bugs noted. Particularly annoying were the exceptionally long wait times while it downloaded software updates and re-booted the system. On average took 4- 6 minutes while staring at a blue screen.
Customer service? Non-existent. Rude and un-helpful. Spoke with 8 representatives before I finally got the truth regarding my particular situation and then was berated by this representative and told what a good company Direct TV was and my upset wasn't justified.

3 out of 5 stars Good picture, but buggy.......2007-01-20

Allows you to receive DirecTV's HD channels, can attach OTA antenna to fill in the HD channels that DirecTV doesn't offer (yet). relatively easy-to-use interface.

Good: Automatically switches to the best resolution for each HD station; very clear picture and sound quality with HD channels, lots of outputs, including HDMI for digital to digital throughput.

Bad: DirecTV's HD receivers have the reputation (deserved, unfortunately) of having dropout problems. Even installers admit that these boxes will occasionally drop audio for 10-20 seconds, and often at the same time either pixelize the image or drop the signal entirely to a blue screen. This usually occurs just as the mystery you've been watching for 45 minutes is about to be revealed. Mine also reset the favorite channels every week or two; I'd notice because I would press the channel-up button but nothing would happen. This only happens if there are no channels to move to. I'd go through the tedium of picking the 80 favorite channels I wanted from the 600 available, but it would clear them again within a few weeks.

I had to have DirecTV replace my box after I documented 1-2 dropouts every watched hour; that was up to 40 interrupted hours in a 20-hour viewing month. It has gotten better, but I still have occasional sound dropouts every week. If I didn't get free DirecTV with my home rental every month, I'd probably give up and switch to cable.

Bottom line: It's what you need to get HD from DirecTV. Just don't expect it to be perfect

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-04

I own the receiver for almost a month and it has been working great. There are no pauses or lags, and it brings a much better HD experience than I expected.

1 out of 5 stars Resets galore!.......2007-01-02

If you like spontaneous resets during your bowl parties, this is the receiver for you! There's nothing better than entertaining a room full of friends and family with hand- and shadow-puppets while this POS resets. Takes a full 5 minutes to cycle through the reboot and DirecTV initialization. Meanwhile, you get a blank or blue screen on your HDTV! Count on 20-50 of these resets during any given football weekend.

It just now reset again during my Rose Bowl party!

Here's the best part: DirecTV knows about the problem! And has done nothing to fix it, just keeps selling them like hotcakes to unsuspecting buyers like you.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid the DirecTV Trap..........2007-07-09

I am currently trapped in a DirecTV contract. Every time it rains, the TV signal is lost. Additionally, DirecTV nickles and dimes me to death. They advertise you can get programming starting at $29.99, but you will not get out for anything less than about $60.00 once they add all the hidden fees. Additionally, you must pay an extra $5 for each additional TV. We also have the DVR service which is so unreliable, we have to use a VCR as back-up to ensure we get our shows recorded.

Recently, we had to move and suspended our account during the move. After we reactivated our account, we were charged late fees for bills we never received. Our contract was extended another two years without our consent. We called DirecTV service, and they do not care.

Once my contract is over, we will be cancelling DirecTV to go back to cable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Basic Receiver.......2007-03-11

I have 3 of these in bedrooms in our house, and they are a great and reliable basic receiver we also have an HD DVR in the living room. All our receivers work great. In the 15+ years we have had DirecTV service, all our hardware has worked flawlessly. When I have set up new programming options and now local channels, they were prompt and courteous in helping me. The HD channel line up is great and more to come. No, I don't work for them and don't even have stock in the company.

1 out of 5 stars Direct TV DVR is the worst thing to happen to mankind since .......2007-10-25

I recently called Direct TV to have them move my system to a new home. They told me they would do it but only if I returned my Tivo receivers. I was given a Direct TV DVR when I signed up and promply unplugged it and set it aside - it still resides in a box somewhere. Let's just say as someone else - it was a high school science experiment gone horribly wrong.

I paid $250 out of my pocket for the move in order to keep the Direct TV TIVO's I purchased at Walmart. Direct TV has gone so far as saying I purchased leased TIVO machines and that they are the property of Direct TV - something I wholeheartedly dispute.

As another has said, the Direct TV DVR holds no comparison to its TIVO older brother. I will go to all lengths to protect my TIVO's from harm...Direct TV will never get them back. In the meantime, I plan to go on happily and blissfully watching the programming given to me by my TIVO's.

Do not under any circumstances sign an agreement that provides a Direct TV DVR. You will feel completely eviserated once you turn it on. Instead find a TIVO Direct TV DVR on ebay and forgo the lease agreement from DIRECT TV. You will be a much happier experience.

1 out of 5 stars It died and hubby is doing the happy dance........2007-08-23

The Direct TV DVR died this morning. After putting up with this DVR for quite some time much to my husbands displeasure it finally died. Hubby is so happy right now as he has HATED the thing with a passion since we got it. He misses the TiVo that we use to have and loved but also died.

He had bought a couple of used Direct TV TiVo's from a friend with plans on putting in a larger hard drive and getting a TiVo back up and running. Now he'll be able to do this.

When you get a Direct TV DVR you don't own it, it is leased. Even though I had to pay $100 to lease it and then another $5 a month. Direct TV will only replace THEIR unit if you pay for a $70 service call and it is deemed a qualifying reason that the unit broke (whatever that might be).

Do yourself a favor and buy a used Direct TV TiVo it is by far more superior.

    2 out of 5 stars A Dumb DVR is NOT a TiVO!.......2007-07-15

If one had never seen or owned a DVR, this one does record programs you ask it to and when it works also provides the crystal-clear picture DIRECTV is famous for. Based on my initial experience -- (2 out of 3 new DVR units failed within 24 hours) I will be getting my 3d HD box in two days, I can tell you that if you've owned a TiVO equipped DIRECTV box, you will never be happy with these.

I owned the Samsung Series 2 TiVO boxes for DIRECTV before on our non-HD TV and last year bought DIRECTV's own HD-TiVO model (which was great), and they have been loyal, trusted friends for a total of 7 "machine years". They operated intuitively, perfectly, without fuss or complaint, and their simple operating system was the envy of my friends who had other DVRs. Our 20-year old bedroom TV blew, and we got second new HD TV, and I needed an HD-DVR for DirecTV and leased their HD model. The first one the installer brought would not power up right out of the box. Luckily there was a second receiver on his truck, and he installed it and got it working right in about 4 hours. Then, 3 hours after he left, we suddenly began to lose channels. Called DirecTV and got tech support (good tech support). Turns out that this unit is defective too, so they are sending us another one in two business days. In the meantime -- we get just a few channels we watch in the bedroom.

During the HD-DVR fiasco, I let the DirecTV technician talk me into replacing my legacy non-HD TiVO for $100. Big mistake! All of those TiVO features are not there. You basically just have time recording features, but if you don't tell it what to do, it is a "stupid" machine and does nothing. I cannot tell you how many times in six machine years, one or another of our TiVOs recorded a program on its own that we would have been disappointed to have missed (and either we didn't know it was coming on or didn't know to watch at all). We could let them totally manage our television viewing. In fact, we grew so dependent on our TiVOs that we really never gave much thought to what else was on TV. On or another of the 3 TiVOs got it all.

If DIRECTV wants to make more bucks by marketing their own cheaply-produced DVR receiver, I have no problems with that, but I do not know why DIRECTV has done its customers the disservice of abandoning TiVO receiver DVRs, but in my opinion it is a terrible mistake to force me to choose between TiVO and DIRECTV.

As much as I like DirecTV's programming, picture quality, and everything else, I will quit them at the end of my lease agreement, unless I can have TiVOs back -- on ALL my TVs. So -- if DirecTV reads this -- wise up and make nice with TiVO and offer their units as an option OR make a better DVR.

If you have to upgrade a DVR for HD with DirecTV, I would recommend you find a used or new-in-box TiVO unit on E-bay or the Internet. If you are used to TiVO, you will not be happy with this DVR -- even when it works flawlessly.

This may be a good system if you live in the desert. If, however, you live where it rains; it is essentially worthless. The signal goes out in the lightest of showers and when you get a thunderstorm, forget about it. You will be without television for the evening.

DirecTV's claim that, "DIRECTV delivers a digital signal 99.9% of the time, rain or shine." is quite simply untrue. At the moment, my television signal is out - AGAIN. I am on-line using my cable. It is undisturbed by the rain. If you live where it rains, do yourself a favor and stay with cable. Much better service and no lease commitments

As familiar as family, with all of it's foibles and flaws, thousands of the faithful are pushing the small stuff like war and gas prices aside in anticipation of what really matters. Game 1. Week 1. Dolphins. Steelers.

And how do we as Americans prepare for such a highly anticipated event? We buy things. Not wanting to miss a moment in the action we acquire DVRs and have games bounced to us from outer space directly to our (0% until June financed) LCD, HD TVs. We TiVo games and Google stats. We have game results "texted" directly to our cell phones. The frenzy is intoxicating! I too must join the masses and see 14 games every Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (Yes, the fact that there is only one TV has crossed my mind, that can be solved, by getting ...... MORE TVs!) .

And how do I get 14 games every Sunday at 1:00 p.m.? What's that? I cannot purchase the NFL package through my cable company? But why? MLB does it. The NBA does it. The NFL has granted exclusive rights to DirecTV, blah blah, revenue, blah, blah. The NFL would like to thank you for your interest, blah blah. But we couldn't care less that you are willing to pay through the nose so you can see the football you want to see blah, blah. OK, OK, I'll do it, I'll get my programming delivered in an entirely different manner so that for only 17 weeks, only on Sundays, I can watch football. And this is what happened next....

Day 1 (Thursday, 1200 hours): Called DirecTV to clarify a few things that I could not find on their site, for example, how long is the contract and when will you be picking up my first born? By the way, I was expecting the answer to the first part of that to be "1 year." Wrong.... it's 2 years. I tell the sales person/zombie that I would like to have it installed by Monday at the latest because there is something coming on that I would really like to see. She says that will not be a problem (LIE #1). After a few other questions, I tell the sales person/zombie that I am going to order it online, she states that it would better if I ordered with her, she could get the order in immediately and give me an installation date and time (LIE #2). After processing the order, she says the installation date looks like Saturday but then quickly changes it to Tuesday. She says she will contact the installers and get a firm installation time that is before Tuesday. She says she will call me back in a few minutes (LIE #3). A couple of hours later, I call the customer service center. The operator tells me that there was a glitch in the computer system and it failed to reconcile the order with an installation time. She says that this happens sometimes with their computers, maybe 1 in a 1000 (did I mention I am an IT Manager with over 20 years experience? IMHO, seems they should get that fixed). Then the catch, it usually takes 24 hours to clear, so call back tomorrow and maybe they can schedule the installation before Tuesday.

Day 2 (Friday, 1400 hours): Called DirecTV to schedule an installation. On hold for 10 minutes. Get a guy who sounds like under his breath he is saying "Shoot me. Just put me out of my misery. Honest, I want you to." But, lo and behold, I get an installation date of Saturday between 1 and 5. It blows most of my Saturday but hey, I'm getting 14 games every Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Day 2 (Friday, 1800 hours): Shortly after arriving home from work, I get an automated message on my answering machine. It is DirecTV telling me I do not have an installation date and I should call to schedule one. Called DirecTV to schedule an installation. On hold for 20 minutes. Get a girl who says the installation is indeed already scheduled for Saturday between 1 and 5 and she does not know why I got the recording. Instead of reading these signs that are clearly telling me not to go ahead with this, I shrug it off and I am happy that in less than 24 hours I will have complete access to 14 games every Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Day 3 (Saturday, 1400 hours): Receive a call from the installation technician confirming the installation and the equipment, 1 receiver. I say, "No, I ordered a DVR." He says: "Oh, don't tell me that, the work order says a receiver." I say, "No, a DVR." He decides to come by anyway.

Day 3 (Saturday, 1420 hours): Two technicians arrive and walk to the back to look around. They speak among themselves and on a cell phone. About 10 minutes later one technician says that they will try to have someone bring a DVR to them but in the meantime they are going to go on another service call. They will be in touch.

Day 3 (Saturday, 1445 hours): Technician calls to say that because it is Saturday, he does not think he will be able to get the DVR and another installation will have to be scheduled but he did correct the work order to read DVR instead of receiver. I call DirecTV and talk to Armando. I explain to Armando that the tech came with the wrong equipment and he said that the work order was wrong but he fixed it and I would like to have my installation done today by someone with the correct equipment. Armando says he is going to call the technican (LIE #4). He puts me on hold for 30 minutes and then the line went dead. I call back and speak to Sean (or Shaun or Shawn). Explain the situation again to Sean and tell him that Armando hung up on me. He says he has to call the technician (LIE #5).. Sean puts me on hold for 10 minutes and the line goes dead. Argh!

Day 3 (Saturday, 1530 hours): I call back again and get a very nice woman whose name I will change to protect her from being associated with the other imbeciles that work at DirecTV. Let's call her Daisy. I explain to Daisy in what is now my shaky, frustrated, busting blood vessels so as not to yell voice, what has happened thus far and I tell her that while I understand that this is not her fault I am having issues with the way this is being handled. She assures me that not only is she going to help resolve the situation but she is definitely not going to hang up on me.

    - She says that the technician has noted that I had to get the landlord's permission. I said "what?" She said that tenants of an apartment have to have permission from the landlord for the installation. I said that even under the best of circumstances, it would be hard to get in touch with the landlord who lives out-of-state, but certainly, getting in touch with her between now and the time a technician gets back would be impossible. I said it was a condo and that they had given verbal permission for the installation. She says that would be sufficient (LIE #6). On top of that I said that the technician did not mention anything about this when he came by so how did he know that I did not have it? I said he came, he said he didn't have the DVR, he looked around and he left. She said, "I guess he didn't say anything about the tripod then." I said "What tripod?" She said that he also noted that we would need a tripod which is an additional piece of equipment that we would have to pay for. I proceeded to accept these things and push forward on the installation.

    - Daisy said we would call their office in Miami. This office metes out the work to sub-contractors and we would track down a technician that would come to my house with a DVR (and a tripod). Daisy calls Miami and conferences me in. Miami transfers the call to the sub-contractor. The sub-contractor says they will check the paperwork and soon cuts off the call. Daisy is shocked that they hung up on us. She starts the call to Miami again and again they transfer us to the sub-contractor, and again, the line goes dead. Daisy is even more shocked that they hung up on us again. Me? Not so much, I begin to laugh hysterically. We call back again and speak to the sub-contractor and, wait for it, the sub-contractor says that work order did not come to them! The technician number that the job was assigned to is one of their technicians but the work order did not get to them.

    - Daisy checks with her supervisor who tells her to ask for a manager in Miami. The Miami office checks it and accuses Daisy of altering the order! While we are on hold with Miami who is now trying to find out where this work order actually went, Daisy rechecks the order and finds that it is exactly the same as it was when I placed the order on Thursday, including the DVR! What does this mean? It means that the equipment on the order was right. The technician either had the wrong order or lied to me (liar).

    - Miami gets back on the phone and says they tracked down the technician who has the equipment and, get this, he told me he would be back out this afternoon to do this install - a) I wouldn't be on the phone right now if he told me that and b) he couldn't have told me because I've been on the darned phone for over an hour now! (liar). Miami asks about the permission. I say that I understand that permission from the condo is sufficient, she says that it is not and the permission has to be in writing. I ask how I was supposed to know about this and she says that I should have been told when I placed the order!!!! Well, I wasn't!!! At this point I got quite angry. I asked why I wasn't told this? How was I supposed to get this kind of paperwork? Miami tries to lay all of the blame on the person who took the order but I point out that her technician did not say word one to me about this. I tell Miami to back off and I tell Daisy I want to speak to her supervisor.

    - I tell Daisy that I appreciate her help but this fiasco is unacceptable. I do not want to yell at her but I do want to speak to her supervisor. Daisy tries to calm me down but now I am furious. I sit on the phone with her while we wait for her supervisor to become available, that took another 10 minutes. Then, she goes to transfer me and I am on hold for another 15 minutes. I guess they didn't think I would notice that they were trying to give me time to cool off before putting me through to the "Resolutions Specialist." I noticed. And, after two hours on the phone, I was not happy to be on hold AGAIN.

    - Denise, the "Resolutions Specialist" tries to control the situation from the get go by telling me, in a very calming voice, what I've been doing for the last two hours. Obviously, this was not going to work for me. I interrupt her and explain about what is now at the crux of the situation, the permission form. She puts me on hold for 5 minutes and then tells me that there is another form that I can sign which essentially puts the responsibility on me. That made complete sense to me and by now I would've signed away my soul. She says she has to call the technician to make sure that not only did he have the DVR and the tripod with him this time, but he should have one of those forms for me to sign. Back on hold again. Eventually she returns to the phone with David who now tells me that I have to have a signed permission form from the landlord AND the condo association!

Day 3 (Saturday, 1800 hours): I've had it! Cancel the order.... I do not want anything to do with this company EVER! Even football is not worth this.

This is by far the worst piece of junk made. It worked for about 1 1/2 days and died. I lost the NFL's game of the year! It just freezes up all the time and when it does you lose all recordings that are not saved. Waiting for dumbrectv to send another. The only reason I got this from them was after 3 HD boxes dieing in 2 months. I did not want to try another. Look where these things are made at - south of US border, do I need to say more!!!

If it weren't for the NFL Sunday ticket I would have gone with DishTv.

    Come on Amazon - Choice between 1 - 5 stars - how about 0 - 5, because this is defiantly a ZERO........

1 out of 5 stars The DVR Plus is horrible.......2006-05-01

This Directv's first attempt at creating a dvr. Previously they used TiVO's technology and branded it with their name. We purchased one when our first dvr looked like it was failing and we've been sorry ever since. The software to run the dvr is overly complicated:
*It's hard to switch between favorite lists - requires about 5 steps.
*In a season pass, selecting only "first run" episodes makes no difference - they all record.
*Also in a season pass, the dvr will decide on it's own which episodes to record - and not inform you. For instance, it will record every practice, qualifying, Busch, trucks, and Sports Car broadcast, but not the actual Nextel Cup event itself.
*The delay between screens can be up to 10 seconds after pressing a button on the remote.
When calling for support on these issues, we've been told that they know about all its problems, that they're all software related, and that a fix will be at least 2 months in coming.
I don't know about Directv's other dvr, but we will be replacing this dvr with an older one that WORKS, shooting it with a couple .45 rounds, beating it with a sledge hammer, boxing it up, and sending it back to Directv.
