If you have a passion for the outdoors, there's no reason you need to be a GPS expert to be able to take advantage of GPS tracking capabilities. The eXplorist 210 features Magellan's easy-to-use operating system, so you can concentrate on your activities without compromising your safety. When you connect the unit to your PC, the folders on the eXplorist 210 can be accessed just like any drive on your computer, and from there you access the information as you would a folder on your own computer. In other words, if you know how to navigate your PC, you'll feel right at home with the eXplorist 210.

The unit offers 32 MB of memory, which includes 10 MB taken up by the basemap of major highways, airports, interstates, parks, rivers and lakes across North America. The remaining 22 MB is reserved for you to download and store Magellan MapSend programs and maps, or specific waypoints, routes and tracks for your next excursion. A USB PC cable is included, which will allow you to perform software updates, as well as download additional maps. This convenient feature allows you to download exactly the maps and data that you need for your excursion. If you're hiking a section of the Grand Tetons, you'll want to have the area's hiking trails, ranger stations, and elevation contours at your disposal. The eXplorist 210 lets you fine tune the data that you'll need for your trip.

And don't let its compact size fool you. This handheld -- at a mere 2.2 x 4.75 x 1.3-inches (W x H x D) -- will let you create and store up to 190,000 personal points of interest and waypoints, 150 files with 20 routes each, and 150 track logs with 2,000 points each. The included Magellan MapSend Software DVD will help to optimize and manage your data and keep track of updates to new versions of MapSend maps. In other words, Magellan couldn't have made it much easier than this.

The eXplorist runs on two AA batteries that last up to 17 hours. A large, 2.3-inch grayscale, backlit display features an amber glow that makes it easy to read at night. Other features include a vertical profile, a celestial table, and a best-fish and hunt-time calculator. The eXplorist 210 comes with a one-year manufacturer's warranty.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer bewaRE.......2007-11-03

I bought this thing for my father-in-law (whom I LOVE). When he opened it, he tried it immediately ... and it didn't work! OK, so I return it to Amazon, telling then it was broken. They charge me a reshelving fee! If you want this thing, don't order it from Amazon ... you might get my old broken one! Let's see if they publish this!

3 out of 5 stars Software.......2007-08-21

I recently bought this unit and sort of expected to be able to use the MapSend Topo software (v 4.20) that I already had installed on my computer to load maps. Unfortunately the older versions of MapSend will not work with the Explorist 210. My correspondence to Magellan tech support about this issue was a waste of my time. If you're going to buy one of these, expect to have to buy the newest version of MapSend to load maps. Or maybe, better yet, look at Garmin.

4 out of 5 stars Good basic GPS for motorcycle use.......2007-07-28

I purchased this as a basic GPS unit for use on my motorcycle. In general, it fits this use very well when used with a handlebar mounted RAM Mount.

I wanted it to be water resistant, which so far it has been. I was caught in several drenching rains, and the unit kept working fine.

I use rechargeable AA batteries and keep a 2nd set charged while I use the ones in the unit. Generally, they will last a full day of use or more.

Note that you only get major roads by default. If you want more detailed roads, you need to get the optional map CD.

Also, I don't use it for route plotting, just as a tool to generally see where I am. For that, it is fine. If you want plotting on a motorcycle, you might consider a Zumo.

Here is the RAM mount explorist specific cradle:

http://www.gpscity.com/item-npi-magellan-explorist-series-cradle/ramholma5.htm

Note that you'll need the handlebar attachment as well, so you're looking at $50-$75 total.

I did not buy one of the motorcycle-specific GPS units since they were $700-1000. I figure this way, I can leave it mounted on the bike while I run into the store and it's not a big loss. Also, it pops out of the RAM mount easily for throwing into your tank bag if you're gone longer.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2007-06-29

This unit is a total disappointment. To be useful you must obtain maps from Magellan, and the retail price for those maps is $150.00 and they must be obtained from the vendor.

The box states a person can obtain maps for $9.99; however this requires a special code (which is on the box) and when I tried to obtain maps under this offer the site refused to allow me to obtain the maps. I called Magellan several times. Customer service refused to help me saying the maps can only be purchased on line and that their site was working properly. Calls to tech support left me on hold for 20 minutes with a recording telling me how important my call was. In my opinion without these additional maps the unit is very poor because the same kind of features can be obtained for less.

The customer support is simply worthless and the unit is very overpriced for what you get. I am returning the product. I am also angered by the marketing technique that promises a customer something they cannot obtain. Making something extremely hard to do, or even impossible, is the same as lying about what is available. In my opinion this is a scam and everyone should stay clear of Magellan. They cannot be trusted.

2 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS GARMIN.......2007-06-10

I am a GPS specialist in the surveyors department of Salt Lake County Utah. I work with Trimble GPS equipment that is capable of establishing latitude and longitude down to the size of a silver dollar. I tested the Magellan 210 along with the Garmin etrex Legend. I compared the two units side by side and found both very accurate when compared to Trimble 5800 established points. I liked the Magellan until I looked through the options Garmin had to offer. The Magellan fell far short in this department.
The Garmin had so much more to offer. The map redraw was another draw back. While walking I could turn 180 degrees and watch the north arrow on the Garmin turn with me, but the Magellan took ten seconds to realize I was going in the other direction. I tested the support system for Magellan. I called and talked to a man who could hardly speak english (from India I think). I called Garmin and got guess what? I talked to a man from Kansas USA. I suggest if you want the best GPS for the dollar go to Garmin. They have so much more to offer for the same amount of money. Another thing to think about is, the US military issues Garmin, not Magellan to our fighting men and women. That says at all. Garmin is handheld GPS!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from this one.......2007-11-03

First the first level technical support is terible and the second level technical support is non existant. Letters to the corporate office go unanswered.

I bought it a year ago and have had it in the field twice. It is my fifth Magellan GPS. I continue to use my meridian color.

The base map is terible... for instance it does not show the Hudson or Misissippi rivers. The base map is used at higher zoom levels even when you load a detailed map. This makes getting a "overview" impossible. It took over 1 1/2 months of calls to customer support to tell me that the map as as designed.

The unit is heavy and the battery life for 4 batteries seems the same as the color unit with it's 2 batteries. The size and weight are a tradeoff for the bigger screen.

I use mapsend 3d software and have 3 reistered versions yes one for each of the Magellans that I still own. I dug the XL out last week to give it another try, the annoyance had worn down a little, only to find that the version 1.50 of the software would not let me change back to the XL from using it with my Color unit. I messed up up on this. Support told me that there was no fix except to buy a new copy of the program. If you purchase software you must strictly regulate that it is used only for the XL unit ... If you change it it may not let you change it back.

Magellan is still very good at getting a fix and retaining it and processing the map and gps data..

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Multipurpose GPS.......2007-10-02

This is a great all around GPS unit. This GPS is not for someone who will exclusively use it in a vehicle. Nor is it the best GPS for someone who will use it only for hiking. It is the best of both worlds.

I fish, camp, hike, hunt and drive. So I wanted a GPS that is portable and could do street routing and display topo maps. The XL's screen size rivals most dashboard mounted GPS units. The screen is twice as big as the screens on the other GPS units in the Explorist series. This makes for a great GPS to drive with.

The Explorist XL uses AA size batteries (4) which is a must if you are going to be away from a power source. If you plan to hike with a GPS you need a standard size battery so you can bring extra. I use rechargeable AA batteries in my unit but I always have AA backups in case I need power and don't have a means to recharge.

This unit was an upgrade for me from the Magellan Meridian Color. The Meridian is about the same physical size as the Explorist XL but the Explorist XL screen is twice as big. After owning other Megellan handheld GPS units for about 6 years I like these units very much. But Magellan's customer and technical support is horrible! Also the software for detailed maps can be pricey ($149) but it is a must if you have one of these units.

2 out of 5 stars Avoid Magellan GPS Products!.......2007-05-25

There are some very good Amazon reviewers here doing a fine job detailing the pro's and cons of this item, so I'm not going to waste your time detailing the unit. I own this and two other previous generations of magellan higher end color GPSs, so I think I'm pretty qualified to offer an opinion to my fellow GPS users. I have no axe to grind, don't work for a GPS company and just want to save my fellow explorers headache & stress.

GPS units rely heavily upon firmware, techincal support, map software and map software updates. No mater how feature rich, ergonomic or well priced a GPS unit appears (all of which has drawn me to Magellen GPSs), without the back-end software tools & support, the product is a failure. Magellan (Thales) has failed miserably providing quality in any of these areas over three generations and 4 years of products. I have spent nearly 100 hours troubleshooting their firmware update failures, searching for correct firmware, talking to them about promised map updates that never came, waiting months for warranty returned products that fail withing minutes of return, customizing PC data interfaces to insure reliability, talking to useless call centers in India ...the list goes on and on. If I wasn't a skilled and experenced network engineer/pc geek, I would have shot myself years ago due to the troubles I've run into with Magellan GPS products. I would go out of my way to insure a friend would never buy a Magellan product, and would even go so far as insuring that my boss avoided one (and I don't like him all that much!). Look to the other GPS company for nearly trouble free products and support, becuase you will find neither with Magellan! Nuff said?

4 out of 5 stars GPS Upgrade.......2007-04-15

I have owned a Magellan GPS since 2003, the Meridian Platinum, it recently lost its display forcing me to look for an upgrade. The closest unit to the Meridian was the Explorest 600, but I opted for the Large display on the XL.
I do miss some of the navagation screens the Meridian had. But I am starting to get use to the XL. I laso purchased the Direct Route NA 3.0 and they work well together. Only had it for 2 weeks so I will update this in a month or so.

5 out of 5 stars Magellan Explorist XL Evaluation.......2007-03-18

Signal reception - excellent. Accuracy - excellent. Screen display - best on market! Joystick control - a dream. PC/Unit software interface - OK (you have to understand the logic behind their programming). If you have problems with XL's heavy weight and low battery life - DEAL WITH IT! because you'll be using an exceptionally good product.
