The worst consumer product I have ever bought.......2007-11-14
This is a classic example of General Electric's vaunted six sigma philosophy. It is clearly a six sigma product...six sigmas in bad design:
-It has 10 number memory dialing, but you can only enter the number, not the name that goes with it. You want to call your good friend Taylor? Good luck which memory location you stored the number in.
-A mentioned by others, the cord situation is a disaster.
-I bought this in Argentina, where I am currently living, but the caller ID appears to have been set up to only work in the U.S.
-It practically falls out of the cradle if you so much as look at it.
-The battery case does not stay open.
-No clue in the instructions how to set the date and clock.
In my entire life I cannot recall a single consumer product that I felt was more of a waste of money than this. When I buy from GE from now on, I'll stick to light bulbs.
This is a DREADFUL phone.......2007-10-03
I don't how well it works, but I DO know that everything is HARD CORDED as in you can't replace the cords. You can't make the line connecting the jack longer without adding a connector (which never works) and you can't modify the base to handset cord, either. GE made a phone that you buy and have to use within 6 feet or so of your jack. If you're using it as a wall phone, you'd have about 18 inches of mobility.
Phone Works Fine For Me.......2007-05-27
I've had this phone for years. I keep it in my bedroom, just to have a phone handy. I have several cordless phones, but I bought this phone so I would still have phone service in case of power failure. The only problem that I noticed when I first bought the phone was that the cord is welded into the phone, and can't be removed. If you want to lenghten the cord you can't use a regular phone cord, you will need to buy a phone extension cord. Then, plug the phone cord into the phone jack at one end of the extension cord, and then plug the other end of the extension cord into your wall phone jack. I did this and had no other problems. As far as batteries go, most all corded phones that have Caller ID will need some type of battery. You will need to buy your own batteries. The batteries time was sufficient for me, and I only used cheap no-name batteries.
Great phone except a battery hog.......2007-02-18
I have used one of these phones for over 3 years. The sound quality is good. The caller id function works well.
The only problem is that it uses 4 AA batteries every few months. Unless you use rechargeable batteries, you will spend more on batteries than on the phone itself. However, this is true of all corded phones that I have owned with caller id, and we have several. Many years ago, I owned a stand alone caller id display that used 1 AA battery that lasted well over a year, so why are these such battery hogs? Manufacturers should display average battery life on the box along with the number of batteries it uses.
Buy Anything But This Phone..........2006-09-23
We bought 2 of these phones and I have never encountered a worse waste of money in my life. On top of what the first person said may I add that the battery compartment NEVER stays closed and if you miss hanging it up by one miniscule your phone is off the hook. Have always liked GE products but this has sent me looking to other companies...

One of the best considering what is available.......2007-12-31
Well, I have bought and returned a few phones for my bedroom. And I have read many of the reviews on many phones. Here is the scoop. The phone base is weighted somewhat and just right for me. I had bought a cheap, very lightweight $8.00 Walmart phone and every time I picked it up, the phone went flying off the nightstand and crashing to the floor. The handset on this is also slightly weighted and very comfortable. You cannot read the caller ID at night because it is not backlit. But from what I am finding (look up bedroom phones), the ones that are backlit are way to bright to sleep through and much more expensive. I have a Uniden cordless phone in my kitchen that only lights up the display when a call comes in or when I pick up the phone to make a call. I have not been able to find that in a corded phone. I needed a corded phone because we lose our power often. I have an LL Bean tiny wind-up flashlight that requires no batteries. I am considering keeping mine by this phone in the bedroom for when I get a call after dark. It is also handy for when the power goes out in the middle of the night. I would say this phone is a good buy for the money. The sound quality is very good also. I had a cordless phone in the bedroom and the sound quality was very poor. This one is definitely worth the money in my book. (Fyi, Amazon sells Wind 'N Go flashlights that are larger than the LL Bean mini that I also own and they are great).
Crappy product + HARD-WIRED phone cords.......2007-10-03
I bought this cheap phone b/c it was cheap + had caller ID. I have since had to buy a hands-free headset that needs to plug INTO a corded phone to use. So now I have to buy another phone in order to (comfortably) attend teleconference meetings that can last an hour or more. What a waste.
I am also afraid that other single-line phones will be hard-wired now, too, and it is so hard to tell from photos.
Update: the caller ID function is now broken! When I scroll and choose a name to dial, the phone randomly chooses a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT number to dial, even though the number shown in the screen is the one I WANT to call!
ge slimline phone w/ caller id.......2007-07-28
this phone is great unless you'd like to add a longer cord to move around your kitchen at all, the cord is permanently attached at the phone base so that's not an option.
Just say "No!".......2007-01-27
Permanantly attached really short handset cord and batteries to make caller id work. What where they thinking?
What was I thinking? I can't believe I bought something before user comments were posted. I figured I couldn't be dissatisfied with a basic corded phone. I was wrong.
Short Cord Syndrome.......2006-12-06
I agree with the other reviewers, this is junk. Ditto the short cord syndrome, with another detail added, the line in cord enters the unit in the center-bottom and has to wind around a confusing series of twists to exit one end or the other of the housing. The problem is every time you move it; which you have to do often because of the short cord syndrome, it displaces this cord so you have to tape it down to get it to stay put (very frustrating). I'm online looking for a quality replacement for this unit now. I would give it 0 stars if that were a choice.

Hard -wired cords? WTF???.......2007-10-01

Cheaply made.......2006-08-15
I bought this phone about a month ago. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had no problem reading the caller id information. However, the phone has a very short cord and it cannot be replaced. I called GE (Thompson) and they informed me all of their corded phones are hardwired. How ridiculous is that! Cords are easily damaged, yet they cannot be replaced. It is very difficult to find a corded wall mounted phone with caller id that doesn't look hideous.
Do Not Order This Item.......2006-07-31
This phone has all of the features that you are looking for and a venerable brand name.
Reasons not to buy it include:
o Poor sound quality
o Non-Replaceable handset cord
o Low quality, hard-to-read display
I read a review that noted the handset cord issue, but a photo showed a standard jack and plug. It turns out that the handset cord has a nice, industry standard plug at one end but the other end - not depicted in the photos I viewed - is hardwired.
Even if one could overlook this "feature," it demands the question: Can the rest of the engineering be just as amaturish?
Mine is on the regifting list.
Will return this phone........2006-04-06
I thought the display was broken so I got a replacement.
Apparently the display was not broken, you just to tilt the phone to see the display clearly. You cannot see the display head-on.
Terrible Phone.......2006-03-18
I purchased this phone today and put in 4 batteries, only to discover what an utter waste of time this purchase was. It didn't work. No display. The ring is annoying. The cord is too short, and can't be replaced because it is wired into the phone. Then I remembered that GE products are now made by a company named Thompson Electronics, and that I had a problem with an item, manufactured by Thompson, several years ago. I can't believe I repeated that mistake.
