Apple iPod Shuffle.......2007-12-19
I own 2 of these, and I just bought 2 more for family members. This is a great little unit, and perfect for the gym, or going away on vacation. I wanted something that didn't take up any space or get in my way during exercise and this fits the bill. Holds a decent amount of music and the battery life is better than I thought.
absolute garbage.......2007-12-12
The name of this products makes certain inferrences- mainly, that thing thing can shuffle songs. Oops. It doesn't actually play anything in a RANDOM order. It just sort of shuffles everything ONCE, then continually loops through that playlist it generated. This playlist is also extremely poorly shuffled, with songs from the same artist frequently playing one after the other. How random.
Save your money and buy a real mp3 player, not this thing that can't even do what it is named for.
Nice but not compatible with Windows Media Player.......2007-11-26
The iPod shuffle is small, plays fairly well and is at a relatively fair price, but if you are comfortable using Windows Media player then this item is a nightmare.
Mac users seem obsessed with attacking anyone if they prefer Windows software but, hey, I like Windows Media player. For me it's just easier to use, faster with way more options than iTunes.
There are many other very good mp3 players out there that work great with Media Player and in the future I will avoid all iPod products. Not to mention once your battery dies then the item is as good as junk.
Just to be clear, I do like the shuffle but I hate iTunes.
Apple 1GB Shuffle - A steep price for a starter MP3 Player.......2007-11-17
The third generation of the iPod Shuffle is similar to the second. It's a great MP3 player for working out or running, especially if you are a die-hard Apple fan. However, the steep price means you had better review all your options before you choose this.
Pros
- Small size
- Nice case design
- Many color options
- Highly durable player
- Apple reputation
Cons
- High price point
- Less durable shell
- Proprietary dock for syncing
- Small capacity (1GB) with no expandability
- iTunes software with limited formats (MP3, AAC)
- Competing products offer more capacity for less $$
The Form Factor
This little guy is small! The body has a spring loaded clip on the back so you can clip it to your shirt without any extra case. Apple added a few extra color options, including the popular purple. It comes in a composite case. The 2nd generation's case seemed a little bit more durable.
The basic controls remain the same (fast forward, rewind, pause, and play) to access your music collection. There is a headphone jack which you also use to mount this on the sync dock. A standard USB B port would have been preferable to this as well.
Storage Capacity
Apple made it available only in 1GB sizes, same as the 2nd generation. It would have made more sense to bump it up to at least 2GB. The competing Zen Stone Plus by Creative offers 2GB (twice the songs), an FM tuner and the ability to see song titles for less money. Sandisk also has some lower capacity Sansa models at similar price points.
Creative Zen Stone Plus 2GB MP3 Player
Zen Stone Plus 2GB Black
SanDisk Sansa M240 1 GB MP3 Player (Silver)
SanDisk Sansa c150 2 GB MP3 Player (Black)
Sandisk Sansa Express 1 GB MP3 Player
SanDisk Sansa Express 2 GB MP3 Player (Black)
SanDisk SDMX7-2048 Sansa c250 2 GB MP3 Player
SanDisk SDMX3-2048 Sansa M250 2 GB MP3 Player (Black)
Durability
Apple definitely deserves point for the more durable player in this group. Even with the new player composite body, these guys do hold up to a lot of abuse.
Software
When you only have 1GB to fill, having to use iTunes software to do it seems excessive. Competing players have even worse software, but allow you to drag and drop files on these devices like USB thumb drives. Once again, if you LOVE Apple and iTunes, the software is not going to be an issue for you.
For those that care about file options, Apple's software allows only MP3 and AAC. You can convert other formats to these, but be aware of the limits.
Sound
The sound this unit produces is pretty good for it's size. However, it's just ok. I still feel the first generation shuffle sounded much better, but the trade off was it was much longer.
Price Point
This unit is pricy at about $80. As of October 2007, 1GB of flash memory is going for under $10 retail. That's what makes this price somewhat hard to swallow. Once again, Apple's reputation is well deserved. This particular model requires you to pay a premium for it.
If you just want a really small player and you are open to brands beyond Apple, the Creative Zen Stone gives you 1GB for $40 and 2GB for $65. Sandisk Sansa has similarly priced models.
If you must have Apple and need a small player for high impact workouts, this is it. If you want to stay with Apple and can afford it, stepping up to the Apple iPod nano 4GB will cost you $140 ($60 more) but gives you 4 times the capacity and the ability to play video.
Overall this is a good player at a price that could be less. Weigh your options and choose the player that's right for you. Enjoy!!!
More bang for your buck.......2007-11-16
At first I was hesitant to buy the shuffle, am I selling myself short, Will I miss the video feature of a full-size iPod? The only thing I have been disappointed about this product is the fact that I bought the silver one just two months before the purple one came out. This ipod is great for working-out and traveling, the other ipods are too bulky for these activities. I take it everywhere with me. I LOVE IT! Now if they can just stick more memory into that tiny little body.

Really works great. Long run time, good sound, well made. I've got three of them.
Impressive!.......2007-12-26
I have to say this little MP3 player is great. I got this as a Christmas gift instead of the pricier iPod Touch. I was definitely skeptical at first, it seemed small and cheap the last time I looked at it in the iPod Store. Truth be told, I was somewhat depressed that I didn't get the Touch. Well, after opening the box (kudos to Apple for making such neat packaging) I was impressed. It's really sturdy- it's got a good solid feel and some weight to it, and it's very portable. The included charging / syncing base it came with is really neat (what with the grippy bottom and nice long cord). Apple really thought this through and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed.
Oh, by the way- if you care about sound or comfort at all I would recommend that you buy some better headphones. The V-MODA Bass Freq Earbuds - Bling Bling Black are great if you listen to a lot of rock.
Older Generation First ipod.......2007-12-26
I am not a young adult who purchased this ipod. This was my first time using any type of ipod. I found it to be perfect and easy to use, an excellant type for a no fuss user. Very compact, fits just about anywhere and easy to place in a pocket, clip onto a pocket. I would recommend this to anyone and I am very pleased with this ipod.

I was disappointed that there was no engraving as advertised ....This was a Xmas gift & I would have been happy to pay extra for it, but was advertised as FREE in large letters!
Didn't work for me.......2007-12-23
I strongly believe Apple is a good product but this is the second one I purchased and both wouldn't hold a charge.

It's about time a company makes a product that my daughter loves and can take a beating!!! Also I love the fact that it requires no special software to run. It's so easy to load music and my daughter already can copy and delete music files.
THANK YOU!!!!
Also the Shaker is dependable... when dropped it keeps on playing :)

SanDisk Sansa Shaker 1 GB MP3 Player (Blue)
Good for the money. Good for kids when you don't want to spend money for ipod. Easier for them to use.
Perfect Player for the Pre-teen..........2007-12-19
This was the perfect December birthday gift for my newly-turned-8-year-old daughter! She was utterly speechless when she opened the many layers of wrapping and saw "my own ipod". Big Sis corrected her: "MP3 Player." I was very happy that it came pre-loaded with a few songs just perfect for her age. She and her two companions were able to start dancing to the music as soon as the package was opened and the battery inserted. I just LOVE this little device. The built-in speaker is perfect for sharing the tunes. It gets plenty loud for them all to hear, even over their chatter, but not so loud as to be annoying to us folks. The speaker sound is quite good for what it is and considering the audience. (Don't expect it to sound exceptional to the trained ear.) She also isn't able to turn the volume up too loud with headphones --a nice plus for the young age group. She loves that she can `shake' it to the next song. Most of the kids who have this will probably be great at Name That Tune with the fast succession of shakes I've heard..."I can name that tune in one note"...shake to the next! It comes with all the necessary accessories including software and the cable to hook it up to the computer. I've used neither of those, however, as it's so easy just to put the card into my card reader and drag and drop the music she wanted. Though I find it not to be a problem, my biggest time-consumer was downloading a free converter to convert my wma files to mp3, as this player only recognizes mp3 format. But even that is not a detraction to this great little player. I've read other reviews that the bottom falls off, etc., but I really don't see how that could happen unless it was forcibly pulled apart instead of the little `twist/click' it takes to remove it and replace it. It does take smaller hands than, say, my husband's to get the right grip on the bottom. The design is quite good for the aimed market, namely 6-10 year olds I'd say. Even younger if headphones aren't being used. And I'm going to plug the brand itself. I bought my husband a Sansa last summer because the price was right. But I was happy with the quality, sound, and size, too. And after my 8 year old's birthday her sister turned 13 and I got her a different model Sansa--her favorite feature of that model is the FM tuner so she can record her favorite songs on-the-fly (something not even an ipod can do). I won't be looking at the more (overly) expensive models of MP3s anytime soon! I highly recommend this player and this brand!
Very kid proof - highly recommended .......2007-12-15
I bought one in blue for my kids - 3 years old and 5 years old. Very kid proof and durable. They have really given it a beating, and it still works great. It's easy enough for young children to work. The built in speaker is great, so are the dual head phone jacks. The only reason I gave this product a 4 star rating instead of 5 is because the battery runs out quickly and the bottom lid always falls off. A piece of tape and rechargeable batteries solve those problems, but maybe on their next version they could fix those things. Over all, I would buy it again.
Simple MP3 player for kids.......2007-12-03
Purchased this for a 9 year old and it is just great for the price. Picked it up for $30 delivered with 1GB of memory. Would highly recommend for someone looking for simple MP3 player. No screen, but well worth it for kids requesting MP3 player.

Awesome Must Have Mp 3 player!!.......2007-12-26
This mp3 player is small in size but packs a punch for the music lover at a great price! Easy to use and quick to drag and drop your favorite songs. Take it to the gym or wherever. No hassle with any batteries, just plug it in to your USB to charge. You don't have to subscribe to any specific mp3 providers either!!! Easy to clip on your shirt, pocket, etc. A must have for any age!!
A lot of bang for your bucks........2007-12-25
This refers to the 2GB Sansa Clip.
I own an ipod 30GB, but I have to get the Sansa Clip because iPod does not play protected WMA format offered by Netlibrary and OverDrive. I am very impressed with the features of this little gadget; it beats the iPod shuffle by A MILE. For $60 (I got mine at Best Buy for $45 on sale), you get a little display (believe me it is important because I owned the first generation ipod shuffle and it was mad as hell when you are away from your computer, pushes the Play button but nothing happens). You also get equalizers, FM tuners, protected WMA support (very important to me). I will say the music sounds more lively as well.
I do not give it 5 stars because it is not as sturdy and well-built as an ipod. It looks very nice but it is very fragile. This is expected because Sansa needs to make money to stay in business, isn't it.
In terms of software, you need a bit of tech savvy to use it, unlike Ipod, where things are expected to work out of a box. For example, you should know how to update the firmware, to re-format the gadget, and to use Windows Media Player to sync audio files (for mp3, just drop your files to the Music folder, though). I downloaded a 4kbps protected WMA file and never got it to play until reading the specifications: the WMA has to be sampled at 16 kbps or more. So I downloaded the CD quality version of the file from Netlibrary and it plays fine.
In a nutshell, I highly recommend this player: you get everything you pay for and some. Don't buy the shuffle, Period. If your budget allows, spend a little more (about $130 plus tax) for the ipod Nano 2nd generation. Having said that, I would say ipod Nano is not an option for me because of the protected WMA issue.
Great gift idea.......2007-12-22
I am giving this as a gift, so it's tough to make claims on the performance of the product, but it's compact size and the Sansa name sold me!!
Fantastic and even cheaper if you look in the right place..........2007-12-19
It's amazing that they can fit so much in such a little machine, and so cheaply. SanDisk makes some of the best MP3 players for the price, and they manage to do so without skimping on audio quality. Remarkably, you can find the 2 GB version of this player at one of the big blue box stores for $44 right now, which is an even better deal.
Great device for anyone who just wants good audio.......2007-12-14
I'm not interested in looking at pictures or watching video on a tiny screen. All I want is a device that will play my WMA-format music and that I can use in the (noisy) gym where I work out. Small, light, easy to use, hard to accidentally turn on or off, great-sounding, with a bright screen and built-in clip -- the Sansa Clip meets all my needs better than most mp3 players and at much lower cost.
The earbuds provided with the Sansa Clip are serviceable, but I use separately-purchased in-ear buds (V-MODA Bass Freq Earbuds - Bling Bling Black), since they help reduce the competition from gym noise. The combination is terrific.

It needs an AC Adapter, other than that...........2007-12-20
I really like this device, and for the price, you can't beat it, the only thing I can honestly say about it, con-wise, is it needs and AC Adapter.
Great Little player, other than that.
My Teen LOVES it!.......2007-12-11
Bought this last year for my 16 yr. old and she loves it. She had no problem getting it loaded and running in no time flat (little web ferret!). She uses it constantly, with NO complaints. Still hasn't filled it all the way up with music. Plenty of room. Having it able to charge off the computer is GENIUS. No batteries to worry about. Love it so much, My 12 yr. old is getting one this Christmas.
Sansa C240.......2007-11-29
This proudct does exactly what it is suppose to. It works with windows vista and xp. I also say I used 9,10,11, windows media player and they all worked. I am thinkin about getting an ipod nano instead though for Christmas. I loved it but it is not as good as ipod nano 3rd generation but better than ipod nano 2nd generation.
Nice player, great price.......2007-11-26
Got this for my son's 14th birthday. Very happy once I got one that worked (had to return the 1st one but very easy policy). The player is easy to use with WMP or just drag and drop. Would have liked to be able to recharge battery without plugging into computer but is working fine and has good battery life. The expansion slot is a plus - can really get alot of music on there. Price was great and free shipping is fabulous.
Overall a wonderful value.
Sansa c240.......2007-11-06
This is a great alternative to an Ipod Shuffle. It is about half price and features the same amount of storage, plus a screen (!) FM radio, voice recorder and picture viewer. The pictures don't look great and the quality of the voice recorder isn't as good as it could be, but overall it's a great bargain. I've had mine for 8 months and i'm about to upgrade to one of the sansa e200's

THANK YOU THANK YOU.......2007-12-26
It's about time a company makes a product that my daughter loves and can take a beating!!! Also I love the fact that it requires no special software to run. It's so easy to load music and my daughter already can copy and delete music files.
THANK YOU!!!!
Also the Shaker is dependable... when dropped it keeps on playing :)
SanDisk Sansa Shaker.......2007-12-26
