Tom Tom One XL like it better than my bmw 550i built in NAV.......2008-01-02

I have this setup with the extended arm in my wife's mercedes 2007 C230, and WoW! only took me about 5 minutes to learn how to use it compared to my 2007 Bmw 550I gps which may look superior but is difficult to use. I like this Tom Tom One XL interface way better. I highly recommend it to anyone that just wants a simple easy to use GPS, well worth the money.

Beginner friendly.......2008-01-01

It's a great GPS for beginners. I first used it to go from New york city to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It brought me to an exit which has construction going on and it did not know and just shows UNNAMED ROAD. So I got lost for a bit. Once I went to a small street it recalculated and gave me so much turns to reach my final destination. I turned it off and did it again and it gave me another way, a better way. I think it was part my fault coz I accidentally entered yes when it was asking if I want to skip tolls. But, feel confident because no matter where it instructs you to go, you are going to reach your destination, only longer if you don't know alternative ways to do so.

Good But Not Great...........2007-12-31

I have this and used side by side with a Garmin 200 W for several weeks before returning the Garmin. Overall this is a good product but a few annoying bugs keep it from being great...here are the pros and cons

Pros

It finds the satellites quickly and keeps the signal. The garmin took 2-3 minutes almost every time from a power up start (this was the deal killer)

The user interface is nicer and has a lot more options than the garmin.

The POI database (such as the POI categories it actually has - it is missing several major US retail chains - see below) is more up to date than the Garmin I bought at same time.

Allows you to set the keyboard to QWERTY mode which the Garmin did not.

The graphics are a bit grainy compared to the garmin

The bluetooth is useless, works only for data transmission/reception and that too with very limited number of phones. No, you cannot use it as a handsfree.

If you take a wrong turn or pass by your destination or do anything to pass by your destination on a 2 lane road, it will not tell you to turn around - it will navigate you through the next set of intersections. In rural areas this can mean a 20 mile trip instead of going back 200 yards.

The text to speech works very unpredictably - it pronounces some name very nicely but mangles others horribly such that you can't recogonize it.

Also it announces street names about a quarter mile before and then simply says turn left or right when you are actually at an intersection and want the street name to turn into. This is annoying. Very annoying.

There is an SD card slot. However the unit works either exclusively with the SD card slot or with the internal memory. Which means that you have to reload everything in internal memory onto the SD card which takes about an hour because of the incredibly s-l-o-w data transfer rates.

Also the internal memory is pretty much full so forget about any upgrades unless you spring for at least a 2 GB or more SD card

Strangely, TomTom doesn't know about major US retail chains like Toys R Us, Payless Shoes etc. This even after I updated the unit with the US Retail POI database file

The color schemes available on the unit and online are completely weird. Seems to have been done by people with zero taste and sensiblity.

The internal battery is useless in cold weather (i.e. if you leave the unit in the car in winter). This after a few weeks. It either dies in a few minutes or doesn't fire up at all. Will have to see how it performs in the summer.

The brightness and contrast are so-so in daylight compared to the garmin 200 w

Easy to use for mom & dad!.......2007-12-31

Purchased the Tom Tom One XL-S for 70 year old parents. We needed something EASY to use and large enough for them to see. We took it on a 460 mile test run and it worked very well and was easy to use. The only problem we had was in trying to find a post office in rural South Carolina...it kept leading us to intersections with no post office. It was good at finding restaurants and gas stations, however, which is what they will be using it for. The ETA was reasonably accurate, we always beat it but it may not have taken into account the different speed limit in different states.

Buggy Maps and Not Really Mac Compatible.......2007-12-30

On a trip to one of the built-in Points of Interest (The NY Hall of Science), my Tomtom XL-S told me to go in the wrong direction through a one way loop in the front of the museum. Then it told me to connect to the highway by going through the paid parking lot at the museum. My wife was onboard with the TomTom until that happened. Now she's back to paper street maps.

So I tried to fix the maps by downloading the latest ones. The package comes with a code for a free download of the latest maps if done within 30 days of first using the unit. Guess what? The link on the coupon now directs me to download TomTom Home 2.0 in order to update the maps. The problem is, there is no Mac version of 2.0. So there are no updates for me. Why advertise about Mac compatibility and then lie about it?

One last thing. On the TomTom website, the pulldown help menu does not list the TomTom XL-S model at all.

IMHO Better than Garmin Nuvi 350!.......2007-12-30

Ok, since there's already so many reviews I doubt mine will get read, however I just wanted to add a few points for those considering this and the Garmin Nuvi 350.

My experience with navigation units includes OEM GUI based navs in Lexus, BMW & Mercedes, the text-based Becker Traffic Pro (used in Porsche's, BMW's, Ferrari, etc.) and now the TomTom One and Garmin Nuvi 350.

I purchased two TomTom's as gifts because of the Best Buy rating by Consumer Reports. I really wanted to get the Garmin Nuvi 350 based on advice from a friend who has done a lot of research and said it was the best for the money, but that would be too expensive.

Let me tell you, after driving using both units I prefer the One to the Nuvi 350. The Nuvi has more features, great battery life, better voice directions and faster calculation, but the One is clearer/easier to drive to, updates faster in tight areas where there are many turns and can be found for less than half the price.

The Nuvi 350 has some nice features; it can play MP3's, it has a long battery life without being plugged in, thus can be used for walking directions, slightly easier to use interface, blue tooth interface for phone and auto dimming. Maybe others... however, most of those features aren't needed in a navigation unit--better save the money and put it towards an unlocked iPhone instead :)). It all boils down to which unit is easier to drive to.

When you're in a big city with one turn after another, when you approach an "X" or "Y" intersection instead of "+", when the highways split funny, etc. in those cases I prefer the One. I don't recall once making a wrong turn with the One, however when my friend and I went to New York City (following Nuvi 350 directions), he made 3-wrong turns (didn't get on the correct highway) and lost 15-minutes, according to calculations, before he let me drive his car to actually get us to where we were going. Driving to his Nuvi 350 was a chore compared to the One. I almost took a few wrong turns myself... constantly had to read what's coming up next on the screen (it's TINY); It's dangerous and I'm sure the people driving behind us weren't very happy with the way we were driving.

Sorry for the run-ons, but if anyone is considering the Garmin Nuvi 350 over the TomTom One, I seriously hope that you try both before making your decision. I feel that the One is much easier to drive to, which to me is the point of having a GPS navigation unit. TomTom One certainly has some drawbacks to the 350, however given that the One can be found for hundreds cheaper, it's definitely the best buy. Two other friends have also purchased TomTom One's since.

First time GPS-er.......2007-12-29

My wife has always had difficulty with knowing which way she's facing when coming out of a store or office. No, its not a 'girl' vs 'guy' thing...she just has trouble orienting herself. When she saw a friend with a TOM-TOM One she thought it was the greatest thing going. And when she's driving she has the same orientation difficulties. She received her Tom-Tom for Xmas and used it successfully within 2 days. It was easy to set up, easy and fun to use. And now she won't let me play with it. 'Nuff said?

Couldn't live without it, now........2007-12-29

I gave this to my husband for a birthday present this past summer. I can't imagine how we ever traveled without it. I'm a avid map reader and excellent navigator, so I never saw the need for a GPS. I'm sold! We love to try out new routes around the busy traffic in Atlanta. I love being able to have an ETA. It's a fabulous product and a great price. My husband downloaded John Cleese's voice for the TomTom. It's so much more fun to hear him give directions than the factory voice.

An outstanding GPS but unfortunately Refurbished units are a Crap Shoot.......2007-12-14

TomTom One is an absolute delight to use in the Northwest area. Its fast, accurate, very easy to setup, and intuitive to use. But, I had to return the first two units to get one that worked. Despite the issues noted below, I would buy a TomTom again. They are really very good at what they do when they work.

The first one locked up. After two hours of online trouble shooting, TomTom sent a replacement. This one worked but had to be reset after each use or it would not start. More online troubleshooting, and finally a replacement that worked.

My online search indicates that about 15% of users experience the lockups and reset problem, even on new units. One gets the impression that failed units are being recycled with little or poor refurbishing. (Perhaps their repair work is outsourced?)

Very well trained & friendly online support, but other than reloading faulty software, there is little they can do but authorize a replacement.

If all you want or need is a simple to use get from here to there navigation without add-on frills and entertainment, you will love the TomTom One. It makes for a fun trip.

However, be prepared for frustration with refurbished units. It would be smarter and much less frustrating and very worthwhile to search for a new unit at discount.

I purchased a Tom Tom One that was refurbished. While I had concerns about buying something that had been refurbished, I was quite pleased when I opened the box as the unit looked brand new. I've had it for over a month with absolutely no problems. Considering the fact that updated maps are expensive and that all these GPSs will be obsolete is another year or two, why pay more?

A great GPS.......2007-11-25

This unit is a great little GPS. I would rate it higher except for the suction mount for the windshield. The unit itself picks up the satellite signals well and calculates position very fast. The touch screen menus are very intuitive and user friendly. The suction mount...well...sucks. It does not stick very well to windshields and tends to release at the most inopportune times. The computer support prograsm works very well especially with the new downloadable upgrade. The only problem I have with the software is probably a user issue -- I can't seem to get it to use country roads in deference to The larger highways like scenic or "avoid highway" routes on other competitive models. I end up using the "via" setting to trick it into using the rural roads.

Bait and switch.......2007-11-05

I ordered a NEW TomTom One GPS from Amazon on October 2, 2007. I was sent a refurbished unit. I emailed Amazon 4 times starting October 3 to resolve the issue and had one "I am sorry" reply. I called and was told nothing can be done on the phone. I wrote a letter to Amazon on October 8, 2007 with copies of their ad advertising a new unit. It is now November 4, 2007 and I have had no reply of any type. The unit was charged to my card within within 8 hours of the order.

I have a unit I can not review because I can not open the box without losing my ability to be able to return the GPS. I have no GPS that I can use and my money is gone.

Amazon has made no attempt to reply to me in a month. No real service available. Careful what you buy - they do not reply.

NO REAL REVIEW OF THE UNIT AFTER A MONTH AS I CAN NOT USE THE UNIT UNTIL THIS DISPUTE IS RESOLVED.

Tom Tom Rocks!.......2007-11-04

This is an awesome GPS device. It is very easy to use and offers alternatives when asked for. The many options incuding language, alternative routes, avoiding tolls, points of interest really makes getting around so easy. This is my second tom-tom; my first was stolen! So, be careful and don't leave it in your car!

Must have for the Tom Tom One XL.......2008-01-02

Just bought a 2nd extended arm mount. I use this in my wife's C230 Mercedes, works great since her windshield is at a steeper slope being a sport sedan. I have it setup so the Tom Tom One XL is sitting perfectly on the dash so you don't have that shaking effect while driving. The only thing I would have changed would be to have the AC connector on the right side of the unit instead of the bottom, I have the unit basically sitting on the dash from the arm but it sits on the ac connector sticking out the bottom of the unit.

The alternative mounting device is great. It comes with a flat adhesive base that you stick anywhere on a flat surface (I have mine under the mirror and above the radio). The suction device works like an octupus with a death grip. If you have two cars, buy one for each car and swap the GPS between the cars. Great buy.
