Music and Photos On-the-Go
With 4.5 gigabytes of available internal memory, the Roadmate 800 will make sure you never run out of tunes. The Magellan Music Manager Tools software lets you simply transfer your .MP3 and .WMA files from your computer to the unit, or you have the option of inserting a Secure Digital (SD) or MMC card containing your digital files. Either way, you'll have enough tunes to take you from L.A. to N.Y. and back. The Roadmate 800 lets you easily browse your music, create playlists (for MP3 files only), and adjust the sound to your personal liking with a digital equalizer. The Roadmate 800's large 3.5-inch color display will also give you the resolution you need to enjoy your favorite digital photos. Simply transfer your files directly into the memory, or plug in your SD or MMC card, and sit back and enjoy.
Magellan Navigation
Of course, the RoadMate 800's main purpose is to make sure you get to where you need to go. To get started, simply select a destination and your RoadMate 800 GPS navigation system will take it from there. By matching letters to the available destinations, Magellan's QuickSpell address entry feature makes it easy and quick to enter destination addresses. An internal address book also stores up to 200 personal or business destinations for quick reference.
Advanced, state-of-art navigation software automatically calculates the most direct route and recalculates it whenever you take a detour or make additional stops. Routing options enable you to choose the best route for you, whether you want the shortest time or shortest distance, or whether you want to stay on or off the freeway. The RoadMate 800 lets you customize every trip exactly as you want. A unique SmartDetour feature will even automatically route around stopped freeway traffic.
Built-in detailed street maps and over six million pre-loaded points of interest make it easy to find the nearest restaurant, gas station, ATM, airport and more. A simple touch-screen menu lets you easily choose a location by category or sub-category. So if you want to find the nearest Chinese restaurant, or the nearest movie theater for the kids, just touch the screen. It has never been easier or more fun to get around town or take cross-country trips.
With detailed maps of all 50 United States, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Canada, you can travel the continent with no need to download new data. A single seamless database built in to the hard drive contains all major city streets as well as federal, state and county roads and highways. And if traveling abroad is in your plans, this GPS system comes pre-loaded with detailed maps of 27 European countries that can be unlocked for a fee.
When you want a clearer view of your route, simply touch the 3D map icon. This will get both a three-dimensional representation, as well as a bird's-eye view, allowing you to clearly see cross streets and helping you to prepare for upcoming turns. If that's not enough, a turn-by-turn voice and visual guidance feature tells you exactly when to make the next turn, and to confirm the voice instructions, the automatic map zooms in to show your turn and switches to TrueView 3D so that you'll be sure not to miss your turn. These automatic functions make the RoadMate 800 one of the most useful navigation aids you'll ever experience.
If you've got a trip with multiple destinations lined up, the RoadMate 800 can optimize your travel plans. Use the Trip Planner feature to enter addresses or select points of interest (POI) before leave. You can choose the order of each destination, or you can let the Multi-destination Route Optimization system calculate the quickest route between each point from your present location. The feature also allows you to add and subtract destinations as you go, and you can save your trip to repeat the same route again.
When you're traveling at night, the displayed map on the RoadMate 800 switches to night view at sundown, and back to day view in the morning. This means that you'll always have a clear view of where you're headed. With SmartVolume, the unit's volume automatically increases at speeds over 45 MPH, which means that voice and audio prompts are always at the right level for maximum clarity.
Best of all, the RoadMate 800 is easy to install and is completely portable. You can choose from a selection of mounting accessories, and there's no complicated wiring required. You simply plug in the power cord and you're ready to go. A built-in rechargeable battery lets you take the unit where ever you need to go, and when you want to transfer it to another vehicle, you simply unplug it from one car and plug it into another. It's that simple. At a mere 10.8 ounces in weight and 3.15 x 1.55 x 6.26-inches (W x D x L) in dimension, the RoadMate 800 is meant to be taken wherever your travel plans require.
What's in the Box

Customer Reviews:
Enjoy your money.......2008-01-02
This 800 has been quirky since I bought it. Things like voice would quit and come back in a few days. Last night it dropped dead in the middle of a trip through the Twin Cities (MN). Not even so much as a skipped heart beat before it died. Didn't help to reset or uplug. It finally displayed "contact customer service". That really cheered me up. Fortunately I had a good navigational device with me (my wife) or I'd still be wandering around. I'm "lost" without a GPS. I've had a 760 for a couple of years and it has a few quirks too. Most of them however it has grown out of such as freezing up. You will get more engoyment out of donating your money to your favorite charity, putting it down the trash disposal or burning it than spending it on an 800. Magellan should stayed with making navigational devices and not trying to incorporate entertainment devices into their products. The only thing I like better about this one over the 760 was the 3D map. They even did away with the second voice for street naming. You can only have one user. With the 760 you can have 3 different ones. I never tried it with the 800 but the 760 is great for yard saling with the trip feature. I just plugged into 110V, got all the addresses from the newspaper, put them in, optimized it and it went one direction when I left, made a complete circle and came back home from the oposite direction. I see several 760 on Amazon so I think I'll buy one. By the way the 800 was used very little.
No Customer Service!.......2007-12-28
I got a Magellan Roadmate 360 product as a very nice gift 2 years ago, this Christmas the power port got wonky so I emailed Magellan for information on where to take it for repair. I got an email back saying they no longer support this "older model" and that the best I can do is to try to trade it in for a refurb at a price. I called Customer service to see what the deal was, and I was on hold/transferred/on hold etc....after 20 min I decided I have no wish to provide this company with any more of my money. I realize that technology changes swiftly, but this is a minor repair and the thing was over $500 and is only 2 years old. I can get a computer repaired after 2years. They Really dislike to have to deal with customers and I would recommend you not purchase any products due to complete lack of support/customer care!
Poor performance.......2007-12-21
Magellan was really promoting how great this unit was. Here is the reality:
- The Maps are OUTDATED! They were at least 4 years out of date when I purchased this unit. When I pointed this out to Magellan customer service I was given a one line response that there were no current plans to upgrade. (Now that they have upgraded the maps they want to charge me!)
- Very slow startup and satellite finding time. There is no excuse for this. Lost and need to find your way? Forget it! You'll be long gone.
- Klunky user interface. Confusing and not intuitive.
- Can't be used as a map! If you are interested in seeing where you are or want to plan an alternate route: Forget it! The unit is so slow and unforgiving it is practically useless as a map. Don't leave home without a MAP!
- Check your routes. Many times either because of outdated maps or who knows what, the unit will take you on a ridiculous route. Unfortunately this usually this only happens when you are lost!
- Poor customer service. Their stance on the maps and slow system response were very inadequate in my opinion considering what I paid for this unit. They gave me the feeling like they didn't care (They had my money!)
- Forget the MP player and the picture viewer. They are obsolete and always were from the beginning.
+ The one positive I can give the system is that where ever you are you can always find the nearest Starbucks!
Overall, the combination of the old maps, slow response time, poor customer service and lousy interface should lead you to NOT buy this GPS receiver. I would be very wary before purchasing any Magellan product in the future.
Do NOT buy Magellan products. I did and NEVER will again!.......2007-12-20
If you are expecting post-sale support, including warranty, from Magellan, don't! It is non-existent!!! It is horrible. All you get is empty promises (read lies). Magellan does not stand behind its (expensive) products.
Lesson learned. I'm throwing this Magellan unit in the garbage. I will NEVER buy or use another Magellan product even they were to give it away for free. I will vote with my money and spend it on something else like GARMIN.
NO customer support.......2007-12-07
Magellan customer service is nonexistent. The documentation packed with my unit says updates will be made available roughly every six months. I have had my Magellan 800 for nearly two years and not only has the company failed to make ANY updates available during that time, they gave me no response of any kind to four (yes, four) separate e-mails inquiring about their update policy. The company's web site now says an update will be offered in September -- but it is September 19, and the last time I checked the site promised an update in July...
The 800 works reasonably well, but be warned of a few things: (1) Although it includes an MP3 player, it will not play music while being used as a GPS (so much for tunes on road trips). (2) The unit is large. Very large. (There is a fairly big screen, which is nice; but the 800 seems larger than it needs to be to accomodate the screen based on competitors' GPS offerings.) (3) It can be incredibly slow to orient itself when you first turn it on. I usually have to wait between 10-15 minutes for it to connect with GPS satellites.
Even with these shortcomings, I'd rate this unit 3 stars if Magellan wasn't so abysmal at supporting its customers. I won't buy one of this company's products again if I can avoid it, and I can't recommend that anyone else do so either.
***UPDATE***: It is now October. The Magellan web site still promises a map update in September. I'll believe it when I see it...
***UPDATE #2: Magellan did finally make an update CD available (for over $60). I purchased it, then found it didn't work. Just made my third call to tech support, and spent my third lengthy period on hold. My update CD still doesn't work. Forget about buying a Magellan product -- I certainly will.

Amazon.com Review
Magellan had a hit with the RoadMate 700, and with good reason: finally, thanks to the 700's big internal hard drive, travelers could simply turn on their vehicle GPS unit and go, without the hassle of loading base-maps. Plus, the 700 offered great features like turn-by-turn guidance with voice prompts and 3D rendering of upcoming turns. Plus, the unit had intuitive controls that offered fast rerouting when you missed a turn or decided to take a detour.
With the successor model, the RoadMate 760, Magellan has kept everything the same, while adding a few features that make this model a compelling upgrade or a great first-time unit for folks who are just joining the vehicle GPS craze.
Enter the destination address, select route method and the RoadMate 760 will calculate the best route for you. |
Design
The overall design of the 760 differs very little from the 700, and that's a good thing. The 2.25-by-3.0-inch screen is exceptionally bright and crisp, and it's even got a brain. A small light sensor on the front of the unit allows the 760 to automatically adjust brightness and contrast depending on ambient light levels. It's a nice touch that helps you keep your eyes on the road instead of focused on fiddling with screen settings during your journey.
Click to learn more about the RoadMate 760's layout. |
The unit's controls are logically laid out, except, perhaps, for the volume and repeat controls. The volume dial is an awkward little thing that is placed inconveniently on top of the unit. Fortunately, this is mostly rectified by the 760's automatic volume system, which turns up the sound when your vehicle cruises above 45 mph. Meanwhile, the repeat button, which resides next to the volume dial and repeats the last voice command when pressed, is quite small and easy to miss, especially when you're driving. It would be nice if such an important control were more prominent.
A slot on the side of the 760 is provided for a memory card; Magellan says future expansion cards will be made available. A flip-up antenna is located on the back of the unit, but if you want maximum reception in all conditions, or if your windshield has a thermal coating, you'll want to spring for a wired external antenna.
Software
Simplicity is the name of the game with the 760, and in keeping with that, the unit's integration with a PC is minimal. The 760 does ship with a reasonably easy-to-use points of interest manager PC application. The software lets you add POI's to the unit's existing database and then upload them to the 760 via USB. With the 760, though, the days of planning routes on your computer and then uploading the necessary maps to your GPS's paltry memory are gone. We think this is a good thing, but we do wish the 760 shipped with an application that allowed users to upload contacts from their Outlook or PC-based address book to the unit's address book. Granted, the 760 does have an IR port for beaming contacts from a PDA or Smart Phone, but further integration with a PC in this one area would be nice.
Installation
Magellan bills the 760 as a complete solution right out of the box, and this couldn't be more true. The main unit easily attaches to an included cradle that doubles as a mounting plate for the vehicle suction cup mount and an input for power and USB connectivity. The suction cup mount is simple to install, and within minutes, we had the unit powered up and ready to go.
Performance
Out on the road, the 760 performed flawlessly. After entering a home address and quickly acquiring a satellite lock on our position, we zoomed in on the neighborhood and tapped a few points of interest on the touch-screen, including a restaurant, an ATM, and a gas station. A friendly voice guided the way, announcing upcoming turns and even pronouncing street names. Meanwhile, a 3D representation of upcoming turns made it clear what maneuvers were next. We especially liked the split-screen view, which offers a traditional map view plus the 3D display. Keep in mind, though, that the points of interest database preloaded on the 760 does not contain everything--we found that it offered just a smattering of all the restaurants and businesses in our area.
Entering physical addresses on the 760 was a snap, thanks to the unit's QuickSpell technology, which anticipates the words you are trying to enter with surprising accuracy. Another great touch is the 760's ability to adapt to changes in your plans. Rerouting is as simple as hitting a few buttons on the touch-screen. The unit will also detect low speeds on the freeway and attempt to plot a detour around traffic. Very cool.
Although the 760's touch-screen interface is a little rough around the edges, overall, we found it straightforward and simple. Our only notable gripe was that it was impossible to edit an address once it was entered. Instead, the entire entry had to be deleted first.
Final Thoughts
While the RoadMate 760 is expensive, it packs a lot of utility and power into a single device. The integrated hard drive, coupled with stunningly intelligent and adaptable routing functionality, make this a must-have for those who need the very best in vehicle navigation.
Pros
- Excellent turn-by-turn navigation and rerouting capabilities
- Just turn it on and go. All the maps and points of interest are preloaded
- Solid and fast satellite reception
Cons
- Minor user interface and controls problems
- No integration with a PC address book

Amazon.com Product Description
There's no denying that the RoadMate 700 is one of the best in-car GPS navigation systems available. Can it get better? Magellan answers that question with a resounding "Yes!" with a new version, the RoadMate 760. With innovative features like "Smart Detour," intelligent route optimization, an enhanced points of interest database and more, the 760 adds even more brains to an already brilliant companion.
Don't worry, the 760 offers all the good stuff folks love about the 700. You still get the same WAAS reception that delivers accuracy to within three meters. And the same massive 20 GB hard drive is present, fully-loaded with detailed maps, as is the intuitive, user-friendly, touchscreen interface. With the 760, gone are the days of having to fiddle with selecting map regions from a CD-ROM and then transferring the data from a PC. Plus, if you keep your addresses on a PDA with infrared connectivity, you can upload addresses from your PDA address book to the RoadMate wirelessly and then navigate to them with ease. Each of the 760's three available user profiles are allotted space for 200 addresses, making a total of 600 addresses quickly accessible. Of course, the most important address, home, is just a few finger-presses away from any menu. You can select destinations by entering an address or intersection, selecting an address from the address book, touching a point on the map, or by choosing among more than 7 million points of interest such as airports, gas stations and restaurants, nightclubs, and more. And fortunately, all of this is ready to go right out of the box and the 760 also ships with the newest device firmware. You just affix the 760 to your windshield with the included hardware, plug it in via the included cigarette-lighter adapter, turn it on, and start navigating.
It's deep within the 760's software that this new model really shines. The new "Smart Detour" function automatically routes you around stopped traffic on the freeway and plots alternate routes to help you keep moving. Meanwhile, new route optimization features let you sort multiple addresses and destinations by shortest time of travel to all of them, and you can now view any destination on the map prior to routing it. New points of interest functionality lets you limit your choices to destinations that fall within a 3.5 mile corridor along your route. You can also easily route to gas stations, restaurants, ATMs and other locations along the way by touching their respective icons on the map. There's even a new SmartVolume feature that offers automatic volume control by raising the volume level when the vehicle exceeds 45 mph. And last, but certainly not least, the 760 includes maps for all of the contiguous 48 states, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada, and yes, even Europe (additional unlock fee required for European maps).
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly Poor Update Service!!.......2008-01-01
I purchased a 760 in 2006, with the promise that updates would be available on a regular basis. Several times in 2007, the unit itself prompted me to go to magellangps.com for new updates, but the website said each time that the update woldn't be available until "x", X being a few months in the future.
But yesterday, there WAS an update available. For $80 (well, I could live with that if it was a good update), but - a really, really HUGE but - it was NOT available by download, and the DVD they offered could ONLY BE USED ON A PC!!
I was stunned, and called their customer support, which confirmed that I COULD NOT UPDATE THE UNIT ON AN APPLE COMPUTER!
What a HUGE ripoff. I now have a $300 paperweight . . .never again!!
Bad unit.......2007-12-26
I bought it when it came out first in late summer 2005. When it works, it is fine. If freezes often and sometimes will just refuse to "see" the satellites even in wide open areas. Maps were old and often would miss many addresses that were old and in urban areas. (But I suspect that might happen with any GPS unit).
Upgrade was suggested to overcome these problems. DVDs arrived in time as promised. As son as I connected the unit to start the upgrade, the unit died! Tried different power cord, CLK adapter cord, different outlet... still dead. Am jumping the hoops of technical support for the last hour but I am not sure when I will get this back in order (if ever). Will update on the Customer Service experience when it is complete but I must admit I am dreading it already - 1 hr on the phone and nowhere closer to the solution...
support keeping me on hold.......2007-12-23
I am waiting to talk to a support person for at least hour now. They are keep on putting me on hold. I guess Magellan GPS does have many issues as lots of people call them for support. Since I am on hold, it gave me the opportunity to write this review.
Magellan: Give better support or soon you'll be out of business!
Unit is good, support really bites.......2007-12-21
Had the unit now for 2 years, Dec '05. The unit works well. Only complaint is no updates on the maps until Dec '07. But I keyed in an extra digit during product registration, and that is what the unit uses to "unlock" the device to update the map. So far 3 phone calls in a week to the "help" line, and nothing as to helping me out. I may have paid the upgrade fee for nothing ! Advice- if you do not need support, buy Magellan. If you may need some help - keep looking. I know my next unit will not be Magellan.
Roadmate good. Magellan Customer Service bad........2007-12-04
Last year I bought a Magellan Roadmate 760 for myself and for my Dad. Both had to be replaced - mine before I had it a month, my Dad's after about 6 months. Amazon replaced mine with no hassles. Magellan replaced my Dad's, again with no hassles. Both replacements have worked well. HOWEVER, when it came time to upgrade the maps, the nightmare started. First, I tried to place an order with Magellan only to find out that the web site was down for repairs and that customer sales do not actually take sales orders. After a week I was finally able to place the first order, only to have the $20 off coupon rejected. I called customer service and was told that the only way for them to fix the problem was for them to cancel the order and I would have to try again. So, even though I thought that this was a very stupid way to do business, I placed a second order for my GPS upgrade and also placed an order for my Dad's upgrade. A week or so later one disk arrived and the amount for the disk sans $20 off was posted to my credit card. No one had ever canceled the first order. I called, and called, and talked to one unhelpful person after another from 10 AM until 6 PM. Finally I was told that they could send me another disk which I could return (paying the postage) and then they could take the charge off my credit card. That didn't even make any sense, so even though the issue was still unresolved, I moved on to problem #2, where was my Dad's software. Apparently, it and my second order (the one that was not suppose to be canceled) were on hold, for no discernible reason. And, just to add insult to injury, when I followed the instructions to upgrade my maps, the software I had been sent erased my GPS unit and then stopped with a "copy failed" error message. Technical support, instead of sending out a new working disk, decided I could pay to send my GPS in to them and they would upgrade the software. Since I was currently looking at an expensive and rather useless paperweight, I had to agree. I also had them cancel all software orders. And believe me that took some explaining in very small words to make the current customer service person I was talking to understand the concept. I will probably still get the disks and my account will probably still be charged and I don't think I can go through this again. And, since I haven't gotten my GPS back from Magellan yet, I don't even know if I have a working GPS yet or if I have spent a lot of money and ended up renting the unit for a year when they don't send it back and don't understand the concept or remember that they even had the GPS. These were uniformly the most useless customer service people it has ever been my misfortune to have to talk to. Next GPS unit will be a Garmin!
