Music and Photos On-the-Go
With 4.5 gigabytes of available internal memory, the Roadmate 800 will make sure you never run out of tunes. The Magellan Music Manager Tools software lets you simply transfer your .MP3 and .WMA files from your computer to the unit, or you have the option of inserting a Secure Digital (SD) or MMC card containing your digital files. Either way, you'll have enough tunes to take you from L.A. to N.Y. and back. The Roadmate 800 lets you easily browse your music, create playlists (for MP3 files only), and adjust the sound to your personal liking with a digital equalizer. The Roadmate 800's large 3.5-inch color display will also give you the resolution you need to enjoy your favorite digital photos. Simply transfer your files directly into the memory, or plug in your SD or MMC card, and sit back and enjoy.
Magellan Navigation
Of course, the RoadMate 800's main purpose is to make sure you get to where you need to go. To get started, simply select a destination and your RoadMate 800 GPS navigation system will take it from there. By matching letters to the available destinations, Magellan's QuickSpell address entry feature makes it easy and quick to enter destination addresses. An internal address book also stores up to 200 personal or business destinations for quick reference.
Advanced, state-of-art navigation software automatically calculates the most direct route and recalculates it whenever you take a detour or make additional stops. Routing options enable you to choose the best route for you, whether you want the shortest time or shortest distance, or whether you want to stay on or off the freeway. The RoadMate 800 lets you customize every trip exactly as you want. A unique SmartDetour feature will even automatically route around stopped freeway traffic.
Built-in detailed street maps and over six million pre-loaded points of interest make it easy to find the nearest restaurant, gas station, ATM, airport and more. A simple touch-screen menu lets you easily choose a location by category or sub-category. So if you want to find the nearest Chinese restaurant, or the nearest movie theater for the kids, just touch the screen. It has never been easier or more fun to get around town or take cross-country trips.
With detailed maps of all 50 United States, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Canada, you can travel the continent with no need to download new data. A single seamless database built in to the hard drive contains all major city streets as well as federal, state and county roads and highways. And if traveling abroad is in your plans, this GPS system comes pre-loaded with detailed maps of 27 European countries that can be unlocked for a fee.
When you want a clearer view of your route, simply touch the 3D map icon. This will get both a three-dimensional representation, as well as a bird's-eye view, allowing you to clearly see cross streets and helping you to prepare for upcoming turns. If that's not enough, a turn-by-turn voice and visual guidance feature tells you exactly when to make the next turn, and to confirm the voice instructions, the automatic map zooms in to show your turn and switches to TrueView 3D so that you'll be sure not to miss your turn. These automatic functions make the RoadMate 800 one of the most useful navigation aids you'll ever experience.
If you've got a trip with multiple destinations lined up, the RoadMate 800 can optimize your travel plans. Use the Trip Planner feature to enter addresses or select points of interest (POI) before leave. You can choose the order of each destination, or you can let the Multi-destination Route Optimization system calculate the quickest route between each point from your present location. The feature also allows you to add and subtract destinations as you go, and you can save your trip to repeat the same route again.
When you're traveling at night, the displayed map on the RoadMate 800 switches to night view at sundown, and back to day view in the morning. This means that you'll always have a clear view of where you're headed. With SmartVolume, the unit's volume automatically increases at speeds over 45 MPH, which means that voice and audio prompts are always at the right level for maximum clarity.
Best of all, the RoadMate 800 is easy to install and is completely portable. You can choose from a selection of mounting accessories, and there's no complicated wiring required. You simply plug in the power cord and you're ready to go. A built-in rechargeable battery lets you take the unit where ever you need to go, and when you want to transfer it to another vehicle, you simply unplug it from one car and plug it into another. It's that simple. At a mere 10.8 ounces in weight and 3.15 x 1.55 x 6.26-inches (W x D x L) in dimension, the RoadMate 800 is meant to be taken wherever your travel plans require.
What's in the Box

Enjoy your money.......2008-01-02
This 800 has been quirky since I bought it. Things like voice would quit and come back in a few days. Last night it dropped dead in the middle of a trip through the Twin Cities (MN). Not even so much as a skipped heart beat before it died. Didn't help to reset or uplug. It finally displayed "contact customer service". That really cheered me up. Fortunately I had a good navigational device with me (my wife) or I'd still be wandering around. I'm "lost" without a GPS. I've had a 760 for a couple of years and it has a few quirks too. Most of them however it has grown out of such as freezing up. You will get more engoyment out of donating your money to your favorite charity, putting it down the trash disposal or burning it than spending it on an 800. Magellan should stayed with making navigational devices and not trying to incorporate entertainment devices into their products. The only thing I like better about this one over the 760 was the 3D map. They even did away with the second voice for street naming. You can only have one user. With the 760 you can have 3 different ones. I never tried it with the 800 but the 760 is great for yard saling with the trip feature. I just plugged into 110V, got all the addresses from the newspaper, put them in, optimized it and it went one direction when I left, made a complete circle and came back home from the oposite direction. I see several 760 on Amazon so I think I'll buy one. By the way the 800 was used very little.
No Customer Service!.......2007-12-28
I got a Magellan Roadmate 360 product as a very nice gift 2 years ago, this Christmas the power port got wonky so I emailed Magellan for information on where to take it for repair. I got an email back saying they no longer support this "older model" and that the best I can do is to try to trade it in for a refurb at a price. I called Customer service to see what the deal was, and I was on hold/transferred/on hold etc....after 20 min I decided I have no wish to provide this company with any more of my money. I realize that technology changes swiftly, but this is a minor repair and the thing was over $500 and is only 2 years old. I can get a computer repaired after 2years. They Really dislike to have to deal with customers and I would recommend you not purchase any products due to complete lack of support/customer care!
Poor performance.......2007-12-21
Magellan was really promoting how great this unit was. Here is the reality:
- The Maps are OUTDATED! They were at least 4 years out of date when I purchased this unit. When I pointed this out to Magellan customer service I was given a one line response that there were no current plans to upgrade. (Now that they have upgraded the maps they want to charge me!)
- Very slow startup and satellite finding time. There is no excuse for this. Lost and need to find your way? Forget it! You'll be long gone.
- Klunky user interface. Confusing and not intuitive.
- Can't be used as a map! If you are interested in seeing where you are or want to plan an alternate route: Forget it! The unit is so slow and unforgiving it is practically useless as a map. Don't leave home without a MAP!
- Check your routes. Many times either because of outdated maps or who knows what, the unit will take you on a ridiculous route. Unfortunately this usually this only happens when you are lost!
- Poor customer service. Their stance on the maps and slow system response were very inadequate in my opinion considering what I paid for this unit. They gave me the feeling like they didn't care (They had my money!)
- Forget the MP player and the picture viewer. They are obsolete and always were from the beginning.
+ The one positive I can give the system is that where ever you are you can always find the nearest Starbucks!
Overall, the combination of the old maps, slow response time, poor customer service and lousy interface should lead you to NOT buy this GPS receiver. I would be very wary before purchasing any Magellan product in the future.
Do NOT buy Magellan products. I did and NEVER will again!.......2007-12-20
If you are expecting post-sale support, including warranty, from Magellan, don't! It is non-existent!!! It is horrible. All you get is empty promises (read lies). Magellan does not stand behind its (expensive) products.
Lesson learned. I'm throwing this Magellan unit in the garbage. I will NEVER buy or use another Magellan product even they were to give it away for free. I will vote with my money and spend it on something else like GARMIN.
NO customer support.......2007-12-07
Magellan customer service is nonexistent. The documentation packed with my unit says updates will be made available roughly every six months. I have had my Magellan 800 for nearly two years and not only has the company failed to make ANY updates available during that time, they gave me no response of any kind to four (yes, four) separate e-mails inquiring about their update policy. The company's web site now says an update will be offered in September -- but it is September 19, and the last time I checked the site promised an update in July...
The 800 works reasonably well, but be warned of a few things: (1) Although it includes an MP3 player, it will not play music while being used as a GPS (so much for tunes on road trips). (2) The unit is large. Very large. (There is a fairly big screen, which is nice; but the 800 seems larger than it needs to be to accomodate the screen based on competitors' GPS offerings.) (3) It can be incredibly slow to orient itself when you first turn it on. I usually have to wait between 10-15 minutes for it to connect with GPS satellites.
Even with these shortcomings, I'd rate this unit 3 stars if Magellan wasn't so abysmal at supporting its customers. I won't buy one of this company's products again if I can avoid it, and I can't recommend that anyone else do so either.
***UPDATE***: It is now October. The Magellan web site still promises a map update in September. I'll believe it when I see it...
***UPDATE #2: Magellan did finally make an update CD available (for over $60). I purchased it, then found it didn't work. Just made my third call to tech support, and spent my third lengthy period on hold. My update CD still doesn't work. Forget about buying a Magellan product -- I certainly will.

the actually works fine but i have purchased a map update. i received the dvd but the update process does not recognize the correct serial number. i have called magellan support about 7 times over the past two weeks. each time the promise a new authorization code within a specific time frame. once as short as 4 t 6 hours and more recently within two days. i still do not have an auth code that works and i am finished trying. i would strongly recommend not purchasing this unit or any magellan unit for that matter. their map updates don't work and neither does their support department

Magellan ROADMATE 800 North America.......2007-09-05
This unit has worked well since I bought it about six months ago. However, it does seem to have some heat related problems and shut down several times on a trip in 90 degree plus weather. Last week I tried to unlock the international maps and the web site would not allow orders. Magellan now tells me that this problem should be fixed by the end of September. Can you beat that. At least 5 weeks with no capability to unlock international maps.
I bought a Garmin nuvi 370 that comes with European maps installed for $ 425.00. The maps alone, if you could get them, are $ 250.00 from Magellan. Based on customer service I cannot recommend Magellan products.
This is the best.......2007-08-14
Hands down top of the heap for all mobile GPS units. This is the 5th one I've recomended oor purchased for someone else. Over 6 million POI'S. When they update the maps in Sept. 07 I would hope they would also update the POI data as well...Bank of America buying up smaller banks leads you to a list of weird ATM'S
Watch Out.......2007-07-20
I Purchased the Magellan RoadMate800 in January 2006. After six months the power pin which is used to connect the recharge adapter to the unit failed. The unit was sent in for repair and returned. Now one year later, once again the power pin connection failed. This time however, the product is no longer under warranty and Magellan wants to charge for the repair. Two friends own the same 800 model and have experienced the same power pin problem. This is an obvious flaw in the manufacture of the product which Magellan refuses to deal with equitably. Recently Megellan formerly a subsidiary of Thames Corporporation was bought out by Shah Capital Partners, LP, Ajay Shah, Managing Director headquartered in Santa Clara, CA. The unit itself works well and is as accurate as any units out there, however, the power pin problem is a major flaw which would not allow you to recharge your batteries.
