With 4.5 gigabytes of available internal memory, the Roadmate 800 will make sure you never run out of tunes. The Magellan Music Manager Tools software lets you simply transfer your .MP3 and .WMA files from your computer to the unit, or you have the option of inserting a Secure Digital (SD) or MMC card containing your digital files. Either way, you'll have enough tunes to take you from L.A. to N.Y. and back. The Roadmate 800 lets you easily browse your music, create playlists (for MP3 files only), and adjust the sound to your personal liking with a digital equalizer. The Roadmate 800's large 3.5-inch color display will also give you the resolution you need to enjoy your favorite digital photos. Simply transfer your files directly into the memory, or plug in your SD or MMC card, and sit back and enjoy.

Magellan Navigation
Of course, the RoadMate 800's main purpose is to make sure you get to where you need to go. To get started, simply select a destination and your RoadMate 800 GPS navigation system will take it from there. By matching letters to the available destinations, Magellan's QuickSpell address entry feature makes it easy and quick to enter destination addresses. An internal address book also stores up to 200 personal or business destinations for quick reference.

Advanced, state-of-art navigation software automatically calculates the most direct route and recalculates it whenever you take a detour or make additional stops. Routing options enable you to choose the best route for you, whether you want the shortest time or shortest distance, or whether you want to stay on or off the freeway. The RoadMate 800 lets you customize every trip exactly as you want. A unique SmartDetour feature will even automatically route around stopped freeway traffic.

Built-in detailed street maps and over six million pre-loaded points of interest make it easy to find the nearest restaurant, gas station, ATM, airport and more. A simple touch-screen menu lets you easily choose a location by category or sub-category. So if you want to find the nearest Chinese restaurant, or the nearest movie theater for the kids, just touch the screen. It has never been easier or more fun to get around town or take cross-country trips.

With detailed maps of all 50 United States, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Canada, you can travel the continent with no need to download new data. A single seamless database built in to the hard drive contains all major city streets as well as federal, state and county roads and highways. And if traveling abroad is in your plans, this GPS system comes pre-loaded with detailed maps of 27 European countries that can be unlocked for a fee.

When you want a clearer view of your route, simply touch the 3D map icon. This will get both a three-dimensional representation, as well as a bird's-eye view, allowing you to clearly see cross streets and helping you to prepare for upcoming turns. If that's not enough, a turn-by-turn voice and visual guidance feature tells you exactly when to make the next turn, and to confirm the voice instructions, the automatic map zooms in to show your turn and switches to TrueView 3D so that you'll be sure not to miss your turn. These automatic functions make the RoadMate 800 one of the most useful navigation aids you'll ever experience.

If you've got a trip with multiple destinations lined up, the RoadMate 800 can optimize your travel plans. Use the Trip Planner feature to enter addresses or select points of interest (POI) before leave. You can choose the order of each destination, or you can let the Multi-destination Route Optimization system calculate the quickest route between each point from your present location. The feature also allows you to add and subtract destinations as you go, and you can save your trip to repeat the same route again.

When you're traveling at night, the displayed map on the RoadMate 800 switches to night view at sundown, and back to day view in the morning. This means that you'll always have a clear view of where you're headed. With SmartVolume, the unit's volume automatically increases at speeds over 45 MPH, which means that voice and audio prompts are always at the right level for maximum clarity.

Best of all, the RoadMate 800 is easy to install and is completely portable. You can choose from a selection of mounting accessories, and there's no complicated wiring required. You simply plug in the power cord and you're ready to go. A built-in rechargeable battery lets you take the unit where ever you need to go, and when you want to transfer it to another vehicle, you simply unplug it from one car and plug it into another. It's that simple. At a mere 10.8 ounces in weight and 3.15 x 1.55 x 6.26-inches (W x D x L) in dimension, the RoadMate 800 is meant to be taken wherever your travel plans require.

1 out of 5 stars Enjoy your money.......2008-01-02

This 800 has been quirky since I bought it. Things like voice would quit and come back in a few days. Last night it dropped dead in the middle of a trip through the Twin Cities (MN). Not even so much as a skipped heart beat before it died. Didn't help to reset or uplug. It finally displayed "contact customer service". That really cheered me up. Fortunately I had a good navigational device with me (my wife) or I'd still be wandering around. I'm "lost" without a GPS. I've had a 760 for a couple of years and it has a few quirks too. Most of them however it has grown out of such as freezing up. You will get more engoyment out of donating your money to your favorite charity, putting it down the trash disposal or burning it than spending it on an 800. Magellan should stayed with making navigational devices and not trying to incorporate entertainment devices into their products. The only thing I like better about this one over the 760 was the 3D map. They even did away with the second voice for street naming. You can only have one user. With the 760 you can have 3 different ones. I never tried it with the 800 but the 760 is great for yard saling with the trip feature. I just plugged into 110V, got all the addresses from the newspaper, put them in, optimized it and it went one direction when I left, made a complete circle and came back home from the oposite direction. I see several 760 on Amazon so I think I'll buy one. By the way the 800 was used very little.

1 out of 5 stars No Customer Service!.......2007-12-28

I got a Magellan Roadmate 360 product as a very nice gift 2 years ago, this Christmas the power port got wonky so I emailed Magellan for information on where to take it for repair. I got an email back saying they no longer support this "older model" and that the best I can do is to try to trade it in for a refurb at a price. I called Customer service to see what the deal was, and I was on hold/transferred/on hold etc....after 20 min I decided I have no wish to provide this company with any more of my money. I realize that technology changes swiftly, but this is a minor repair and the thing was over $500 and is only 2 years old. I can get a computer repaired after 2years. They Really dislike to have to deal with customers and I would recommend you not purchase any products due to complete lack of support/customer care!

1 out of 5 stars Poor performance.......2007-12-21

Magellan was really promoting how great this unit was. Here is the reality:

- The Maps are OUTDATED! They were at least 4 years out of date when I purchased this unit. When I pointed this out to Magellan customer service I was given a one line response that there were no current plans to upgrade. (Now that they have upgraded the maps they want to charge me!)
- Very slow startup and satellite finding time. There is no excuse for this. Lost and need to find your way? Forget it! You'll be long gone.
- Klunky user interface. Confusing and not intuitive.
- Can't be used as a map! If you are interested in seeing where you are or want to plan an alternate route: Forget it! The unit is so slow and unforgiving it is practically useless as a map. Don't leave home without a MAP!
- Check your routes. Many times either because of outdated maps or who knows what, the unit will take you on a ridiculous route. Unfortunately this usually this only happens when you are lost!
- Poor customer service. Their stance on the maps and slow system response were very inadequate in my opinion considering what I paid for this unit. They gave me the feeling like they didn't care (They had my money!)
- Forget the MP player and the picture viewer. They are obsolete and always were from the beginning.
+ The one positive I can give the system is that where ever you are you can always find the nearest Starbucks!

Overall, the combination of the old maps, slow response time, poor customer service and lousy interface should lead you to NOT buy this GPS receiver. I would be very wary before purchasing any Magellan product in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy Magellan products. I did and NEVER will again!.......2007-12-20

If you are expecting post-sale support, including warranty, from Magellan, don't! It is non-existent!!! It is horrible. All you get is empty promises (read lies). Magellan does not stand behind its (expensive) products.

Lesson learned. I'm throwing this Magellan unit in the garbage. I will NEVER buy or use another Magellan product even they were to give it away for free. I will vote with my money and spend it on something else like GARMIN.

1 out of 5 stars NO customer support.......2007-12-07

Magellan customer service is nonexistent. The documentation packed with my unit says updates will be made available roughly every six months. I have had my Magellan 800 for nearly two years and not only has the company failed to make ANY updates available during that time, they gave me no response of any kind to four (yes, four) separate e-mails inquiring about their update policy. The company's web site now says an update will be offered in September -- but it is September 19, and the last time I checked the site promised an update in July...
The 800 works reasonably well, but be warned of a few things: (1) Although it includes an MP3 player, it will not play music while being used as a GPS (so much for tunes on road trips). (2) The unit is large. Very large. (There is a fairly big screen, which is nice; but the 800 seems larger than it needs to be to accomodate the screen based on competitors' GPS offerings.) (3) It can be incredibly slow to orient itself when you first turn it on. I usually have to wait between 10-15 minutes for it to connect with GPS satellites.
Even with these shortcomings, I'd rate this unit 3 stars if Magellan wasn't so abysmal at supporting its customers. I won't buy one of this company's products again if I can avoid it, and I can't recommend that anyone else do so either.
***UPDATE***: It is now October. The Magellan web site still promises a map update in September. I'll believe it when I see it...
***UPDATE #2: Magellan did finally make an update CD available (for over $60). I purchased it, then found it didn't work. Just made my third call to tech support, and spent my third lengthy period on hold. My update CD still doesn't work. Forget about buying a Magellan product -- I certainly will.

Magellan RoadMate 3000T Portable GPS Navigator and MP3 Player

Amazon.com Product Description

It's time to really get in the driver's seat with a new generation of vehicle navigation devices from Magellan. With a large, 3.5-inch color touch screen and buttons for one-touch access to key features, the Magellan RoadMate 3000T is intelligently designed to make GPS navigation easier than ever.

Enter an address and get turn-by-turn voice guidance, while the built-in dynamic map shows your location, destination and route in traditional or "birds-eye" 3D for a clear view of your surroundings. Touch an on-screen icon for information about nearby services and get routed there instantly. Magellan's SmartDetour technology routes you around stopped freeway traffic. And because the 3000T is traffic-ready, you can simply add the Magellan TrafficKit to get live traffic incident reports. Plus, the unit features a built-in music player, photo viewer and rechargeable battery so you can take your entertainment on the road.

Design
The 3000T features a sleek and compact design for optimum portability. A large touch screen and buttons offer access to key features and the universal configuration gives easier access to buttons whether you're right or left handed. The unit tracks up to 12 GPS satellites simultaneously and uses the high performance SiRF Star III solution for optimal signal acquisition. It's also WAAS enabled, further enhancing positioning accuracy.

Lightweight and completely portable, the 3000T is easily transferred from one vehicle to another, so you can take it with you wherever you go. The built-in rechargeable battery lets you continue routing or listen to music or view pictures when unplugged, and its compact size and light weight enable you to easily take it with you on business trips or vacations. Vehicle installation couldn't be easier; choose from a selection of mounting accessories, plug in the power cord, and you are ready to turn it on and go

When you're traveling at night you'll appreciate that the displayed map background color switches to night view at sundown, and back to day view in the morning. Another function, SmartVolume, automatically increases the unit's volume at speeds over 45 MPH so voice and audio prompts are always at the right level for maximum clarity.

Navigation
Easy-to-use guidance screens Navigation with the 3000T starts with the unit's super bright, high-resolution display screen with bold and easy-to read icons and text. Your route is clearly highlighted, and you can zoom in or out on a detailed map. Touch the 3D map icon anytime to switch between a three-dimensional representation that gives a bird's-eye view of the road ahead and the more traditional 2D map view. Plus, you can select from nine different color combinations to personalize your view.

The Maneuver List gives you a detailed list of streets and turns; touch a street on the list to exclude it from your route and instantly calculate a new route. Meanwhile, the TrueView 3D function offers a detailed, enlarged view of the road layout for upcoming turns and information about intersection maneuvers. Dynamic turn-by-turn voice guidance tells you when to make the next turn, while an automatic map zooms in to show your highlighted turn and switches to TrueView 3D so you can confirm the direction at a glance.

Route optimization is a breeze with the 3000T. Let the unit guide you on an optimized trip with several destinations. First, use the Trip Planner to enter addresses or select points of interest (POI). You choose the order or let Route Optimization feature calculate the quickest route between each point from your present location. Add and subtract destinations as you go, and save your Trip to repeat the same route again.

When traffic slows or stops on the freeway, SmartDetour will automatically calculate a detour and ask you if you'd like to route around the congestion. You can turn the feature on and off, or personalize the settings for the maximum distance you'd like to detour. You may also choose to detour anytime by touching the enter button while you are in an active route, even on city streets to route around road work, closed roads, flooded streets or stopped traffic. Whenever you decide to take a detour or go off course, your Magellan RoadMate automatically calculates a new route as you drive.

Add the Magellan TrafficKit to receive live traffic incident reports that appear on the dynamic touch screen map. Touch an onscreen icon to view detailed information about the incident. You can also automatically reroute around accidents, slow-downs, road work, severe weather conditions and more. The TrafficKit service will be available in the Summer of 2006 and it will require a subscription.

And last but not least, a touch of a button shows the information about your present location so you can easily direct emergency services and roadside assistance to you. Or, save this location to your address book to easily route back to it later.

Maps and POIs
Built-in, detailed maps of the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Canada enable you to travel the country with no need to download new data. A single seamless database built in to the hard drive contains all major city streets as well as federal, state, and county roads and highways. Detailed maps of 27 European countries are also pre-loaded and can be unlocked for a fee.

An easy-to-use database of over six million POIs includes addresses and even phone numbers, in most cases, for businesses, services, parks, lakes, airports and more. It's simple to find the nearest restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and more, wherever you travel. A simple touch-screen menu makes it easy to choose a location by category or sub-category. So if you want to find the nearest Chinese restaurant, just touch the screen. You can also store up to 200 personal or business destinations. QuickSpell intelligently sorts, searches, and checks spelling for rapid address entry with minimal keystrokes, accelerating your data entry by matching letters to the available destinations.

Entertainment
The 3000T make sit easy to take the fun with you wherever you go. Magellan RoadMate Manager Tools software enables you to easily transfer your MP3 and WMA files from your computer to a memory card (SD or MMC) that can be inserted into your Magellan RoadMate 3000T for hours of music entertainment. 3 out of 5 stars New Maps DVD Doesn't work.......2007-12-19

I bought the Magellan 3000t about 8 months ago and use it a fair amount with good results. When I saw new maps being released I ordered them via the Magellan Web Site. I received the DVD in 2 days and I expected to be wowed. I was but not the way you expect.

I loaded the DVD and entered the security code provided and it tells me I have a bad code!

I called tech support and got a promise of a call back within 48 hours. That was a month ago! I have called back several times and finally someone gave me a new code, same result! Email got me a notice saying call tech support. I finally got an email saying they are having issues and will send out replacements once they figure out how to fix the problem!

This is my 3rd Magellan but will be my last I can't stand the non English speaking support staff and non responsive email support.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth what we paid..........2007-12-13

My wife and I have had the Magellan 3000T for over a year now. At first, we loved this device and it saved us a lot of trouble with poor directions. Since "upgrading" to the latest version of software, the device has been much less consistent. There are times when the device will not update the miles to the next action (turn, etc) for long periods of time. It is not a poor GPS signal or anything else as the map still updates. We just missed a turn when not paying close attension as it went from 10 miles to "turn right". This cost us 20 minutes in rerouting. Additionally, we had expected to receive a map update in August. The date was pushed back multiple times, then published and quickly removed due to "technical issues with several customers". Now they have posted the map at a cost of $80. I think I'm going to spend an extra $50 and get a new device instead.

1 out of 5 stars Good unit when it works, extremely poor customer service.......2007-11-22

Unit work beautifully for the first 6 months (hence the ONE star). The unit started to freeze up occasionally and unexpectedly and would have difficulties locating the GPS satellites. Updated the software online to see if that would solve this problem. Unit deteriorated rapidly after the update and within a month not only would it freeze up on every session, fail to locate ANY satellite but it also would lose all recently and previously stored addresses and locations.
After obtaining an RA number, sent unit to Magellan for repairs. Called 4 weeks later and they gave me a repair number and assurance it was being repaired. Called 4 weeks later and they said it was fixed and in test and would be sent back soon. After 2 weeks I called back and they now claim that they never have received the unit and want proof of me sending it! Total time without unit to date: 10 weeks and counting.
I strongly recommend to avoid buying ANY Magellan product because of the risk of getting it repaired. Garmin sure looks good now.

5 out of 5 stars Great steal for the price.......2007-11-05

I had to put a quick review just to offset all the negative ones after I owned it for a month or so. I used it few times and it has not failed me so far. Got the right address in the boondocks of VA with quick re-routes after we missed quite a few turns the last night. I find no problems with the sound volume or bulkiness or any of the other "cons" some of the other reviewers were upset about. Not even trying to use it as a music player while driving - everyone has ipods and such nowadays!! So basically, it does the job it was supposed to flawlessly, update to latest version software and you should be good to go pretty much anywhere you want. Plus I got it refurb on another website for 150 after MIR, so overall, a great deal.

2 out of 5 stars It's okay I guess.......2007-11-04

This item is okay I guess. There are some things that I certainly don't like about it, but I was trying to keep the cost down when I decided to purchase a GPS. So, I can't really complain since I purposely went with the Magellan 3000T because it was less expensive than other brands.

I hate the fact that I can't touch this item ANYWHERE without hitting a button. I don't like mounting the unit to my windshield, so there is no good way to hold the unit in my hand or lap without a button being hit that changes the screen in some way.

It also takes the unit a long time to find me when I first turn it on - even when I'm right out in the open with nothing blocking the signal. Many times I have had to drive around for 10-15 minutes before the satellite ever finds me. That's very annoying & has caused me to make wrong turns many times.

And, if I'm on a very long trip, I've noticed that the unit will 'freeze up' after it is on for about 30 minutes or more. Sometimes I'll be driving down the interstate & realize that it has 'frozen up'. I have to stick a pin in the side of the unit to reset it & enter my directions all over again. This really gets on my nerves.

If I had it to do over again.....I would have probably paid a little extra for a nicer unit.

This powerhouse GPS unit just keeps gaining in popularity. Recently bestowed the honor of being named one of "Oprah's Favorite Things for Holiday 2004" it's just getting better and better every year. With the previous version of the RoadMate 700 lacking in included accessories this years RoadMate 700 hits a home run as Magellan has wisely included in the package a windshield suction cup mount, a 12V DC vehicle power adapter, 110V AC power supply, USB data cable, universal cradle and of course a user's manual.

The Magellan RoadMate 700 offers a powerful dash-mounted navigation tool with turn-by-turn voice prompts, making it easy to get to new and unfamiliar locales anywhere in the lower 48 U.S. states and Canada (For a fee it can be loaded European maps using the Magallen web site and the included USB connection cable). It also features a bright color TFT LCD screen (2.25 by 3 inches), touchscreen input, WAAS reception (for 3-meter accuracy), and multiple ways to select your route and then view it on screen.

True View 3D navigation shows you the actual road layout.

The RoadMate 700 is one of the few GPS devices that's ready to go as soon as it's unpacked. Its whoppingly huge 20 GB internal hard drive comes preloaded with detailed road maps for all of the U.S. and the southern (most populated) section of Canada, so you won't have to fiddle with selecting map regions from a CD-ROM and having to transfer the data from a PC. If you keep your addresses on a PDA with IrDA capabilities then you'll enjoy the RoadMate's ability to upload the addresses wirelessly and point you right to your destination. In fact each of the 3 profiles that the unit keeps track of is allotted space for 100 addresses, making a total of 300 addresses available. Of course the most important address, home, can always be accessed with just a few clicks and from any menu and the RoadMate 700 will guide you back with ease.

You can also choose a map view, or the maneuver list.
If you are planning on using the RoadMate 700 with an older car--make sure it has a cigarette lighter power adapter, or leave enough time to charge it up in your hotel room or office with the supplied AC power cord. This also means that you won't be able to use the RoadMate 700 as a handheld device outside of your car. As for mounting, the included suction cup windshield mounting hardware is quite easy to use and allows you to mount the unit on any glass surface in your car. The RoadMate unit easily clips into the provided windshield bracket and can be tilted and turned with it's adjustable arm so you can see it easily and safely while you navigate.
Quickly locate points of interest and amenities along your route.
One of the benefits of the windshield mount is that because it's a suction cup mount you can move it in seconds from car to car with no problems at all. This newer suction cup based windshield mount is an improvement over the older three pronged mount that used to come with the RoadMate units. The older three-pronged mount was inserted into one of the middle air conditioning vents on your dash; the prongs are bendable to help you get the most secure fit, but never gave as secure of a fit as the windshield mount does.

But the RoadMate 700 shines as a virtual co-pilot. During our tests, it consistently acquired a satellite lock quickly (within a minute) and displayed our current position. From there, we searched through the vast library of POIs (points of interest) to find our destination (Seattle's baseball stadium). The RoadMate 700 has four different modes of getting you to your destination--shortest route, shortest distance, least use of freeways, and most freeways. Selecting shortest route got us to this venue using very practical directions that weren't far off from what we normally would choose.

If you're traveling to a destination that's not a widely known POI (such as a friend's home), no problem. You can enter the exact address into the RoadMate 700--using the touchscreen to tap letters and numbers into several search screens--to have it create a route. (You can also save 100 destinations in the address book.

QuickSpell minimizes typing.
The voice prompting was clear and audible (thanks to the two built-in speakers), and we were given ample warnings for upcoming turns. One of the RoadMate's nicest features is the Repeat button (which is smallish, but the only button found on the top of the device). If you miss a turn instruction, press it to repeat the previous voice prompt. Of the three view modes, True View was our favorite--it displays a 3D street-level view that helped us orient ourselves to our surroundings.

Overall, we were quite thrilled with the RoadMate 700's features: the color screen was bright and readable even in direct sunlight and the voice prompts were clear and not distracting to our driving. Best of all, the UI (user interface) screens are easy to navigate and--thanks to its large hard drive and map database--it's ready to go as soon as you open the box. While the price is not for the faint of heart, it will be a very valuable tool for many drivers (from business folk to parents) who need to get to unfamiliar locations quickly and smoothly. -- Agen G.N. 2 out of 5 stars way better than nothing.......2007-11-16

Only good thing about this unit is it is a lot better than nothing.
Here is a partial list of problems.
1 When you want a low numbered street ie 3rd, you have to scroll back from all the higher numbered streets in the hundreds to get to it.
2 There is a scroll bar on the right of the "touch" screen which should scroll but when it is untouched the display goes back to the beginning.
3 The corners of the touch screen are hard to get to respond when you have fat fingers or cold dry fingers.
4 If the map is outdated the unit will dump you at the last known address on the street instead of telling you it does not know.
5. When not using or needing to exit it tells you to keep to the left on a freeway instead of saying nothing. Why would I exit?
6. On the same point as 5 but in reverse it will sometimes not say anything when it should at forks etc.
7. When it says keep to the left sometimes there are more than one lanes on the left so at the next junction you will be too far to the left to take the right.
8. There is sometimes a delay in units response so you push it again and again but then it all of a sudden will catch up but way beyond.
9. On number 8 this will happen with the touch screen and the direct navigation buttons.
10. Only way I found to pre-program is to tell it you are going then cancel so it will be in previous destinations. Has no more than one stop. No way points.
11. Company non responsive for support or unable to help by upgrading.
12 Updates for map are currently late. No firmware updates to help these issues in foreseeable future.

1 out of 5 stars Good GPS but has a weak spot. Do not buy.......2007-10-10

I have owned this unit for 2 1/2 years. Thought it was great. The unit receives its power from a cradle that it snaps into. It seems that these cradles have a tendency to fail and then the unit is useless until you buy a new cradle for $50.00. The failure rate is so high that Magellan was out of cradles for three months. This is a definate defect in the cradle and Magellan should replace all of the Roadmate 700 and 760's with a free unit of comperable features. I paid over $700 for my unit in May, 2005 and another $100 to upgrade it with new maps and firmware one year later. This is my biggest regret to date.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy Magellan, Buy a Garmin.......2007-09-30

You never know if the magellan will find the satellite when you turn it on. It can take up to 15 minutes. I turn it off & on trying to cycle it. I've used a Garmin 330, Works perfectly. You'll be throwing your money out the window with mine if you buy a Magellan!

1 out of 5 stars DON'T PURCHASE ANY MAGELLAN PRODUCTS.......2007-08-31

The Magellan 700 Series worked wonderfully for 19 months then it stopped working completely. It stopped working a few months after I decided not to upgrade the system.
I contacted Customer Service located in India and was told there was nothing they could do for me and refused to give me an address to where I could send my GPS to be repaired.
I would never recommend anyone to purchase a product from them.

1 out of 5 stars Great for the first year.......2007-07-23

It worked for the first 15 months. It stopped acquiring the satellites after 3 months past the warrenty. I called the tech support, which is India, and was told to try a few things. They did not work. I paid 155 dollars plus shipping to have it repaired. It came back, without an explanation of what was wrong. It worked for 3 weeks and the same problem happened again. One thing that I should mention is that there was no problems until I upgraded the software (another 100 dollars). Could it be that they have a bug in the upgrade????
I would never buy anything from that company again.
