Compared to Magellan's Sportrak line, the Meridian is bulkier both in weight (8.5 ounces with batteries compared to the Sportrak's 6.1 ounces) and overall dimensions--6.5 by 2.9 by 1.2 inches (W x H x D)--making it not quite as pocketable (unless you have cargo pants). The bright color screen measures 2.2 by 1.75 inches and has a decent 160 x 120 pixel resolution with 16 colors. Compared with the staid monochrome screens of most GPS devices, the icons and mapping details jump off the screen. We found it to be nicely readable in the car and in most outside conditions, though it wasn't at its best in direct sunlight. As with cell phones in the car, you will have to be wary with your usage. The Meridian Color can be a bit distracting while you're driving, as you have to read the screen for turning instructions (though there are audible prompts) rather than hear a voice providing directions.
With a selected map region loaded into the memory, simply press the GoTo button and select either a new or previously loaded waypoint or a point of interest (such as an airport or sports arena) to navigate to via a street route. After a bit of calculating, the Meridian Color presented us with a turn-by-turn journey that we could follow while driving. As we neared each turn, the Meridian Color emitted a set of beeps to warn us of the upcoming direction change. The set of beeps elevated to an urgent level when we were right on top of the turn. We used this to plot a course to Seattle's Space Needle, and it produced acceptable results. However, if you're familiar with the terrain, you may have found your way in less time with better shortcuts. If you turn off the Meridian while following a route, you can return right back to it once you turn the device back on.
Magellan's Meridian series offers Secure Digital (SD) memory card expandability, which is a bonus for adding a large amount of map data, especially for long trips. However, we were disappointed at its placement within the device behind the batteries rather than in an external slot. This won't be a problem for most users, but it could be annoying if you had a number of maps spread across several cards.
We experienced good battery life during our test--Magellan boasts 13 hours of continuous use with two AA batteries. If you do plan on frequent use in your vehicle, we recommend either purchasing the optional cigarette lighter power cable or using NiMH rechargeable batteries, which typically provide a longer battery life, as well as minimized cost in the long run.
Overall, we were pleased with this portable hybrid car/outdoor GPS receiver. The Meridian's color screen definitely provides quick viewing details while out hiking or mountain biking, while the driving navigation features were indeed helpful in unknown locales. However, if you do plan on using your GPS primarily in your car, you should think about moving up to either Magellan's Meridian Color Traveler (which includes a street map CD-ROM, vehicle mounting bracket, and power adapter) or the Magellan Roadmate (with voice instruction). --Agen G.N. Serious Navigation Tool.......2007-02-20
This is the best hand-held GPS. It is upgradable with new maps which you won't find on some others. The color screen is easy to read, bright and dims easily to save power. All in all, it fits the bill for the serious traveler. This powerful tool actually asists you in navigating your own route, far prefereable for my liking than others which tell you which way to go. I like to make choices, and I have experienced more direct routes and discovered many roads and foot routes less traveled all over the US and Europe with the assistance of this wonderful device. I have discovered marvelous places with my Magellan -- places only the locals know. I have used my Magellan Meridian Color GPS for three years, and I can't imagine how it can be improved upon. I consider it indespensible for traveling. Works great in the car, and then you can take it with you on foot, train or bus. If you apply yourself to learning how to use this device it will increase your satisfaction in traveling and knowledge of your surroundings.

Magellan Promised Updates but Didn't Deliver!.......2006-07-04
We purchased this item two years ago when the item was truly hot on the market. At that time, the Magellan website indicated that regular mapping updates would be available for all the Meridian products. On the contrary, NOT ONE update has been produced, and now we see where the Meridian product line is being discontinued. We would not have purchased a Magellen had we known that mapping updates were not going to be produced as promised. Regularly during the course of two years, we emailed the manufacturer of the Magellan products to inquire about the updates. Our replies continually indicated that the mapping updates were 'on the way.' They never were produced! Basically, our investment is now obsolete with no hopes of mapping updates, Magellan obviously cannot be trusted, and we won't purchase another Magellan product again. With so many companies, including Dell, entering the GPS market, there's no need to invest in Magellan again.
What a Bringdown.......2006-05-20
After losing an older Meridian Marine, I decided to make use of my software and buy this unit since I LOVED the previous model for a few years. When I received this model it seemed to be working fine when I initialized it. It came with antique version 4.02 firmware, marked from 2002. The unit refused all my software (specifically uploading REGIONS off the Topo, Nav, and World Basemap discs) until I upgraded the firmware to anything above v.5. When I tried to install v5.34 from the CD or v. 5.40 which I downloaded, it kept freezing and wouldn't accept the firmware. I then called tech support (NOT open 24/7!...just California time 6am-5:30pm, weekdays). I spent a total of 3 hours on hold during my 4 phonecalls!!!! The obviously outsourced "tech experts" (trained British accents, probably in Pakistan) then repeatedly walked me thru the same steps to fix the problem as though they were encountering them for the first time! I even got the same guy twice. One said I'd get a callback the next day at 7:30 PM New York time. It never happened. After giving up, one of them transferred me to a "senior-technician" who did no better. After even she gave up, she said she had to look up something and would call me back within 30 minutes. Guess what....It never happened (again)! No matter how great the unit might be, I will never do business again with a sleazy excuse for a professional Company named Magellan (Thales Communications). Even the "worldwide basemap", which I bought the unit for, only gave me an OUTLINE of Panama...no roads, no nothing!! In all my 58 years, with all my toys (boats/radar/stereos,medical electronics, cameras, etc,etc, etc), this is the single WORST response I've ever had to asking for HELP, especially on a BRAND-NEW product!
Magellan Color is Tops.......2006-01-21
This is the 2nd Magellan GPS I own, I also have a 315 series GPS. I had prior experience with GPS's, (my 315 and military GPS's) so it was really easy for me to get comfortable with this unit.
Turning on the unit, the first thing I noticed was the VIBRANT color display, which was the main reason I bought the unit. I bought a Sport Trac, but really wanted the color screen.
I think there are 7 screen on this unit. Satellite position, the map screen, compass, large data display, speed, position and the road screen. Each screen has data fields that are totally customizable, with no less than 12 different data displays.
This unit does just about anything dealing with navigation, map datum, unit of measure, time format, mils versus degrees, it does projection based on time, contour elevation, everything.
I bought the software containing elevation, and when maps are downloaded it shows the contour interval, I want to buy the turn-by-turn software, but it is kinda pricey.
The software is easy to use, the hard part is getting past the limitations. I used a SD card reader to put the images directly into the card, but I also hook it to the computer with a USB to Serial adapter, as you can download your track history onto your computer and replay your entire trip back in varying levels of speed.
Really there is so much this does it is hard to remember everything.
Some of the things i don't much like are the fact you have to take the battery cover off and take the batteries out to get to the card, I use a 512mb card, and it is way more than enough space for whatever I need to put on.
You can put all your way points in the way the maps are put in, but I have not delved into that to much.
Another thing is when it is first powered up, you have to watch the screen for a disclaimer about using at your own risk, then have to hit enter to procede, if you don't hit enter within maybe 20 seconds it powers off.
Well, I have used it alot, and I love it, the only thing better would be a Roadmate, but you get about the same thing at 1/3 the cost. I would highly recommend this unit to a beginner or advanced user alike.

The limits that are placed on you: 1 sd card and 1 chart -It does not matter how much memory or how many cards you have do not buy any thing more than 32 mb!
So if you use the blue nav software on your boat be sure to pack your computer. If you are going out of the imposed restricted zone placed upon you by Magellens"map send" fire up the generator get your computer going and then load the next chart you need. I guess this should not be a problem if you have an ocean liner - boy hope you do not have a smaller boat.
I would be happy with this gps if they let you register let's say 3 additional sd cards or if they did not limit you to one chart on the one registered sd card! what is the point of only one chart at a time? one chart! the charts are not that big some one needs to get on the ball at magellan and lift restrictions ASAP! or maybe Ill go back to Garmen! You dirty sons of bitches!
Great technology hamstrung by poor functionality.......2004-03-11
Thinking it'd be great to get a GPS for your boat/ car/ hiking which will work for all three? Think again. The Magellan GPS MapSend software system makes it virtually impossible to use your GPS for more than one of these categories. Hard to believe, I know, I just got mine in the mail yesterday and I already feel duped. The killer is that the inability to crossover from the BlueNav charts to Topo or Streets is BY DESIGN. There is no software or memory restriction that would keep the unit from being able to use all three MapSend products. Plus... the waypoint managment is poor (can't load from PC to handheld or visa versa without erasing all of the waypoints stored on the receiving device), the file transfer is slow (unless you buy extra technology), the wrist strap screws in to the center of the mount area for external power/ computer communication cable/ external antenna so you always have to unscrew the wrist strap to attach anything else (I mean, come on!). I feel I've spent $500 for a nearly useless product. Avoid Magellan is my advice.

I purchased a Meridian Marine and was disappointed to find that the BlueNav Chart software has serious shortcomings. First you can only download one small chart on one SD card. Chesapeake bay, for example, has 3 different charts so you have to erase the SD card and re-load another map. If you are in a sea kayak it is tough to take a lap top. Also you can't download your track into a PC, which is a problem for sailboats. Your other option is to buy the extra large charts on an SD card which is quite expensive. If you buy this unit with the idea of loading Marine charts you will be seriously disappointed. Buyer beware check it out with Magellan, the website glosses over these shortcomings. The hardware works well if you want to download maps into the unit get an SD card reader it will save you hours of time over a serial connection.

I almost did not buy this unit after reding the reviews but as I suspected this is a well built GPS that fits in your hand with a large useable readout. The map software worked perfectly and had all the street info I needed even in remote areas of MI in the "UP".

Just got this unit. It's great! I think this will set the standard for handhelds for a while. The ability to add memory makes it fairly unbeatable right now. I've put down some thoughts of mine that might be helpful. The stats and whatnot are on the Magellan web site and Amazon so I won't go into those. Also go to the Magellan site for screen shots. They have a shot of each screen, it's helps to see them I think. Anyhoo, my thoughts, very random and probably not much help but....
- It's very easy on the hands. Fits nicely with all the buttons up front, no hidden or back buttons. Very nice. Also has dedicated zoom buttons for the maps, a great touch. Nothing's worse then one button for both. The rubber cover is very grippy so water will never be a problem. The battery compartment doesn't look very water tight, however the unit seems tight. I would guess water will never be problem.
- This unit come with the pc cable, although the blur above doesn't say this. So you won't need to buy that cable. Makes it easier really and saves a little money for other extries. You will only need the car cable, which is cheaper. The combo looks a little large and complicated, so I'll go for the straight cig lighter cable.
- The screen is very easy to see. It has 3 levels of backlighting, but I haven't needed that at all. The screen's large enough and bright enough for most folks. The detail is good, like any hand held it's somewhat limited but I have had no problems at all.
- The 16MB of info is really pretty good. The detail doesn't go beyond state, national, and some limited local roadways but that's to be expected. With the Mapsend CD-ROM I would think the detail is endless, especially with the add on memory. I haven't bought the CD-ROM yet, out-of-stock at Amazon at the time of writing. :( Can't wait to test that out! The marine points are good. Seems to have most of the local fixed navaids, including archaeological sites. I'm on east coast so marine points are plentiful and this seems to have most. Good enough most sailing and boating, especially since one doesn't navigate solely with a GPS anyway - I hope! I would think a future marine CD-ROM is in order though. I'm not sure if the gold or platinum has more road map detail or not. Probably, but they don't have the waterway points which is a neat feature. Also has lakes and rivers, for the fishers out there - has a fishers helper time-of-day screen.
- It's very easy to program and get going. I had it up and going in 15 minutes, including reading the manual. It's really easy. I'm a first time GPSer if that helps. No worries! Oh, it comes with batteries in the box. A nice touch. No running out looking for batteries when all you really want to do is play with the thing! A+ to Magellan on that one.
- It's very quick at getting the sats and giving your local. Since it's my first I cannot compare but I'm satisfied with the speed. It refreshes quickly and has a nifty compass. The drive screens are well thought out and uncomplicated.
- All of the prompts and menus are intuitive and easy to navigate, which seems logical for a navigation tool. But not always the case I guess. The learning curve is gentle, without losing the feeling that this is a seriously techno complicated piece of equipment.
- Extras. Includes a very neat sun/moon function. It will tell you rise and set times as well as phase of moon. The GPS lets you know your position to the sun and moon at all times as well.
I really like this GPS. It does everything I can think of and a little more. Heck it even has an elevation gain/loss recorder. Kinda cool after a major hike to see how far you climbed. Overall this is a must buy. If you're in the market for a GPS seriously look over this one. I think it's the top of the heap, and well worth the ticket price. Hope this helps! I just ordered my third one of these. The first two just quit working. I called Magellan tech support (clearly handled from Asia, by the way) both times and after a lot of diagnostic work was told my cable was no good.
Another irritation: why use a serial port connection? My laptop does not have a serial port so I have had to buy a cumbersome adapter (not cheap) that is itself finicky. Why not USB?

I was really happy with how this product worked. Even with batteries in, it is smart enough to use external power when plugged into my dashboard. I only found one thing I didn't like... the cords could be a little shorter so they don't get in the way so much. But that's a small price to pay for a product that works.

The only question I have is why *only* the cigarette lighter adapter? Very few cars (I know there must be *some* out there) have CD-ROM capable computers installed in them and hard as I may try, my car won't make it up the 2 flights of stairs (without damaging the banister or carpet) to get to my home office.
The only way I could use both power and data connectors at home was by purchasing a 3rd party 110v to 12v adapter to use with household current. It's a cheesy and unattractive solution to Magellan's lack of foresight.
Other than having to explain to everyone that Magellan's too cheap to provide an adapter of their own, the cable works fine.
I use a swivel mount as a desk cradle and so the cable connector snaps onto the back of the mount removing the need to mess with the ridiculously small connector screw (guess their designers all have extremely thin and dexterous fingers -- not to mention 12v power sources built into their homes). The swivel mount is excellent.
It's a cable and it does the job but, really, how many people are able to use a serial port connector and auto lighter adapter plug at the same time?
The cable is expensive but since the GPS connector is proprietary you have no other option.

I use this cable in conjuncton with a 310 to track vehicle movement, send email, and support emergency services using a system called APRS. I wore out the first cable after several years of use/abuse. The cable allows me to just power the GPS, update the flash ROM/BIOS within the unit, and/or connect it to a laptop or transmitting device. The mount has two small holes where I placed small suction cups for EZ window mounting in any vehicle. The mapping programs work very well, esp if you have a sound card with voice announcements! :-)
The 310/315/320 series were on the street before USB was stable. They are not small, fixed antenna only, and are power hungry. USB and smaller units are available, with WAAS, for under $100 bucks (TN 200) if you really need USB. You don't need speed as the GPS messages are sent at 4800 baud without data loss or overrun, 9600 baud preferred. If you don't have a serial port, then this is not the GPS unit for you, and never will be. Get the proper unit for the job. There is a reason these are still popular. Period.
