The eXplorist 600 is an ideal GPS guidance tool--both in the city and in the country. Magellan has no support!.......2007-09-27
I have the explorist 600. Using this GPS in the field is a pleasure. Uploading the detail maps are a total pain. Not intuitive at all. My major complaint is the proprietary usb/charging cord has been unavailable for over two months! Magellan support has no clue as to when the cord will again be available. Therefore I cannot charge the battery and cannot use the gps. I will never buy their products again.

Hi, I just got the 600 and my first question was how do you charge the battery. I had to search the web because Magellans web site was not at all helpful. The usb/charging wire should go down across the battery case incase you (I would think it would go the other way so you can easily lay it on a table while charging)are curious. Bad support, Bad design, Bad functionality, bad product for the cost........2007-08-12
I knew I was in trouble the first minute I opened this product up. The USB plug they use to connect your laptop to the GPS unit is the worst design I have ever seen on any product. Getting to your battery or SD card is very difficult and the battery cover is clunky and hard to put back on.
Other notes I did not see mentioned here or on their poorly written owners manual. The owners manual is very vague about directions. It will tell you one step of the directions where you need 5 other steps to actually complete. It will state something you might need to do, and not explain those steps at all, anywhere. You cannot upload maps larger then 64 megs even if you have a 2g SD card like I do. Which mean you can upload CA and parts of NV at best. I'm using Mapsend Directroute.
I wanted to use the GPS Guidance feature on my laptop. Which means my laptop would be a giant version of my handheld but there is no way to get this to work since my PC with XP does not recognize this hardware. Their website does not help at all or customer support.
The user interface is also designed poorly. The Mapping program will crash for no reason. It will also lock up on you and the only way to turn it off is to remove the battery which is no easy chore. They show fast link buttons but they seem to have their own mind. Sometimes you can click on Menu and you go right there and the next time you have to click a series of buttons to get the menu to come back up. This product has been very frustrating from A-Z. I can't think of anything that was easy to do or complete. Every step has a bug. Nothing works the way you hope. Temperature gauge, Altitude, NOTHING. The mapping software is also about the same. Its amazing how you can use Goggle Maps and their live traffic and everything works as you hope for or better then expected and its web based. Goggle earth is even better. This software is the EXACT opposite, and I'm using their latest firmware from their website.
The screen is bright and nice. The tracking works perfectly on Sunny days, outdoors. Forget about using in your car, house or rainy days.
Battery life is good. Once you get it setup it works ok. I would recommend you looking at other products in this price range. I'm also looking at the Navigon 7100 for my car and Motorcycle which is technically advanced and better graphics or I might just get a Iphone.

I use the 600 for hiking and driving and it works very well. It is small, light and waterproof. I would change the power management feature to allow the user to completely turn off the backlight (instead of just reducing it) to save battery power. The electronic compass is a nice to have feature, but I find that it uses too much battery power, so I turn it off. I carry a spare battery, and for a long outings I also carry an AAA battery pack (sold by Cabela's). I have found that I only need the added MapSend TOPO map as it includes all the driving information I need. The only thing it won't do is compute and display turn-by-turn directions. I have a 1 or 2 GB SD card loaded with most of the US, including Hawaii (where I used it on 4 islands in rental cars and a cruise ship). New users probably should be prepared to read the manual and perhaps buy the instructional DVD, also sold by Cabela's. It has a very sensitive antenna that keeps sat coverage most of the time in canopy and mountains. I had an old Garmin, which did not work well, but I've not had any experience with the new models.

I had an Explorist 600 and am considering buying another. Helpful hint: They won't tolerate being run over by a car. I found it to be an excellent GPS but found the support from Magellan to be quite lacking. The lack of auto-rerouting is a bother too since I use it most on bicycle & motorcycle. Overall A good Product.
