5 out of 5 stars Works Well with Blackberry Pearl.......2007-12-20

I have a Verizon BlackBerry Pearl 8130. The new version of Google Maps that shows one's current location peaked my interest in this. The default Maps version gives a rough approximation of your location by triangulating on the nearest cell phone towers. Although helpful, it can be many hundreds of feet off. I like this feature but wished for more accuracy.

After doing some research on Bluetooth GPS receivers, I decided to buy this unit. I've been using it now for a couple days and found it to be very impressive.

While sitting in my dining room and using Google Maps, the unit synced up flawlessly and displayed my current location with a blue dot on the map. I zoomed in and was amazed how accurately the dot was placed. I switched to satellite view and continued to zoom in. I then saw my house come into view and, to my amazement, the blue dot was centered on the roof, immediately over the location where I was sitting. Now that is accuracy!

The unit is built solidly built. The on-off switch operates with precision and is not flimsy. The charging connector is mini-USB and has a nice positive feel to it. It also came with a car charger and user manual. I found all the documentation online and downloadable. This is a great little unit and I'd give it six stars if I could. At $59.95 it was a bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Using with BlackBerry Curve 8320.......2007-10-25

I purchased this for use with my T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 8320. I'm using it with BlackBerry Maps and Google Maps for BlackBerry. It is working very well. The device is about the size of a bic lighter (just a bit thicker). Satellite reception is amazingly good even inside buildings and vehicles - good enough that it can be turned on and left inside your travel bag so that you don't accidently leave it in a rental car. Device charges from mini-USB so it is very convenient and includes a car adapter.

The included map software seems to be for windows mobile devices so was useless to me, but recommend Google Maps anyway as you can get traffic flow overlay.

No problems - just works like it is supposed to.

Holux GPSlim 240 Bluetooth GPS Receiver

Product Description

The GPSlim 240 proves that you don't need size to achieve power!

Measuring only 64mm long x 22mm wide and 15mm deep youll be hard pushed to find a smaller GPS that can out perform the latest creation from Holux.

It is small enough to sit comfortably in your pocket alongside your mobile phone or PDA. With a built in rechargable battery the HoluxGPSlim240 provides enough power to last for a full days walking should you decide to take it into the hills. On returning to your car you can recharge it using the in car adaptor to ensure you return safely home.

It communicates with other electronic utilities via Bluetooth, USB-compliant interface, and has a built-in rechargeable battery to save such satellite data as the status of satellite signal, the last location, and date and time of previous use. With low power consumption, GPSlim240 tracks up to 20 satellites at a time, re-acquires the satellite signal every tenth of a second and updates position data once a second. The power saving mode (Trickle-Power) allows the unit to operate a fraction of the time. It also provides a time and position fix function (Push-to-Fix) that will switch on the unit at a designated time, even when the receiver stays off.

3 out of 5 stars Sexy, portable but unreliable.......2007-12-13

This is my very first GPS receiver and it's a great looking product which is easily stowed inside a pocket. As I'd expect, reception isn't great when traveling between tall buildings or deep ravines; but oh well. Other than that it works wonderfully, five-star rating. I've tested it on hikes, bikes, and driving. In that respect, I cannot complaint whatsoever as it proved to be very trustworthy and was very excited about it.

But for only the first three three months. After that time (bought it elsewhere), this GPSlim 240 unit stopped reporting the position. Just like that. Although the Bluetooth signal was detected, the output was gibberish both on my mobile and computer, and the device even claimed it had a satellite lock deep inside a building! I went to the store, and asked for repair under the warranty.

After three weeks, a new unit was returned to replace the original. As soon as I step outside, I try it and now it works. Awesome!

But for only 1 mile when ... poof, no more Bluetooth reception from the GPS receiver! However, the two lights still blink (therefore it has battery, has satellite lock and, supposedly, has Bluetooth activated). This time, no receptor I have can find the GPSlim 240 by Bluetooth; and I only had this new unit for less than 10 minutes!

Although I'm disappointed by the perceived frailty of this device, both the performance it has demonstrated for the first three months and the fact that it's still covered by the warranty, gives me plenty of reason to hope it may finally work again some day with the same reliability I was already used to. I'm just hoping I'm not disappointed about it again.

5 out of 5 stars Just Works, What more can you ask?.......2007-12-13

Since there is no physical interface other than the On/Off Switch and the charging port theres not much to complain about. The unit is really small, shorter than a stick of gum. I paired it with my Nokia phone (6120 Classic, S60 OS), went outside, waited for a few minutes for the flashing light and ran google maps with the myLocation feature set to GPS. -Bingo-. Now you need to understand that this unit is only a GPS sensor. You turn it on and it starts sending serial data over the blueTooth port. You still need a PDA , Cell phone, or Lap Top that has a Navigation or Mapping program, but there a several available including Google Maps which does not do map matching like most Personal Navigation Devices (PND) (Garmin, Magelian) but is still very useful for finding your way around. If you have a smart phone or PDA with blue tooth, this is a great toy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little GPS Receiver.......2007-12-04

I bought this to go with my T-Mobile Blackberry Curve 8320. Setup was a breeze, and now I can use Blackberry Maps for directions. (Google maps for Blackberry has some issues with bluetooth gps, but that's not the fault of this device.) The thing is incredibly portable (just thicker than a pack of gum), and works with the same mini-usb charger that my blackberry uses. For the size, features and price, you really can't lose. Highly Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Great small GPS unit!.......2007-11-19

Great unit for the size, bluetooth is great no wires needed, decent battery life.

The unit sometimes will not pickup sat lock, you have to wait a while or turn it off and back on again, but usually keeps a good lock once it gets it. Also location is important, needs to be out in the open and unobstructed to get a solid lock.

If you need something that works every time you need it and 100% of the time and very quickly, go with another device. Unit can be a pain when it's not picking up a sat lock and you are in a rush.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Product.......2007-10-30

A GPS receiver that I can put in my pocket and use with my PDA! What could be better? It works flawlessly, connects quickly, and charges via USB cable, which I can easily get adapters for to charge while on the road! I use it for Geo-caching and navigating on the road. It works great! Highly recomnded to turn your PDA into a very capable GPS system (though you will need a GPS app as well)

1 out of 5 stars doesn't work with TREOs, Customer Service is beyond horrible.......2007-11-15

This is probably the worst product for the Treo smartphones. I got convinced to buy it because of its size and functions, but what do you know, it doesn't work. In less than a week I tried returing it, but they kept telling me random and incorrect procedures to try to get it to work. They thought I was a fool. They clearly gave me instructions that would have me going in circles since my phone did not have any of the functions they were suggesting. Finally, after 2 months, they said they would take my item back. It's been 4 months, and I have not yet heard from them. I still write emails every 2 weeks asking or an update. They appear to have received it, but nothing more has been done. Don't buy it if you have a TREO. So far its just $100 down the drain.

4 out of 5 stars Four Months with the VGPS-700.......2007-07-23

I've used the Visiontac VGPS-700 extensively since March, and it works extremely well. It's main advantage for me is the extremely small size, since I carry it with me everywhere. It takes only a few seconds to turn it on and connect it to my Dell Axim x51v PDA, and I immediately have access to directions to all my contacts. It is accurate and generally fairly fast to first fix. It recovers quickly from signal loss. Battery life seems close to the 10 hours claimed (although I've not run it to depletion). The only less-than-stellar performance issue I've found is that it is not as sensitive to the GPS satellites as my wife's Rikaline 6033. In side-by-side comparisions, the Visiontac seems to lose track a little sooner and take a little longer to regain track after a drop-out. There isn't much difference, and it is probably because the antenna is so small, a necessary evil to get the whole package so miniturized. Overall an excellent product.

5 out of 5 stars Smallest and most powerful GPS I have come across.......2007-07-13

The Visiontac VGPS-700 was smaller and more powerful than I expected. It paired with my Dell Axim X51v with no problems and I was up and running. There is also a "coolness" factor with this product. I have yet to have it lose a signal.

5 out of 5 stars Ultra slim gps with knock-out design factor.......2007-07-13

I must confess that I'm a sucker for design and on this aspect the VGPS-700 outshines everyone else. It's a real knock-out with its piano finish and the Zippoesque appearance. The reason I bought a bluetooth gps is that I can use it with several other gadgets: laptop as general purpose gps; PDA for use in the car; and (most importantly) together with the Blue2CAN receiver with my Nikon D-200 for geotagging. The slim design and easy setup of the VGPS-700 makes it the obvious choice for someone encumbered by photo equipment as it is.

The VGPS-700 functions flawlessly with my other devices and once again I must stress the design factor: it will reduce the barriers posed by your spouse against buying yet another 'vital' piece of equipment ;-)

4 out of 5 stars OK receiver for a OK price.......2007-07-11

I need a SiRF 3 blue tooth receiver for under $100 and this product falls in my budget. The size is actually not my big concern -- any decent blue tooth receiver seem to work perfectly in a small pocket, not to mention in a vehicle, IMHO. Just as one of the other reviewers mentioned, the receiver has little problem locking satellites when its moving. Other than that, it worked just fine. Well, all in all, not a bad receiver. But if you don't mind to invest more money you certainly can get a better one.
