The c340 is designed with simplicity in mind, although Garmin hasn't forgotten to add a touch of class. With a weight of under ten ounces and a width of 4.4 inches, the c340 is ultracompact and easy to transport. To keep confusion on the road to a minimum, the only buttons are a rotary volume knob and an on/off switch. The bright 3.5-inch-diagonal display features a touchscreen, making it a snap to input routing information and make quick selections on the road. The c340 sports dual integrated speakers for high-quality voice prompts, a USB port for PC connectivity, and an internal lithium-ion battery that provides power when you're planning your routes outside the car (approximately 4-8 hours battery life). In addition to an included 12-volt power adapter for in-car power, there's also an SD memory card expansion slot for use with other Garmin MapSource mapping products. I bought mine just before the christmas and even paid charges for the 2 day shipping as i wanted to have it before christmas. Anyways i tested the unit by taking it to a place i had never been to before and i must say it performed admirably.
The only drawback that i have seen till date is the text to speech feature doesn't always speak the names of the street or the Hwys. I did play around a bit with the settings when i received it so am not sure if it is a setting that i messed up or the unit itself has an issue.But initially it did speak a few street names but not all of them that it wanted to take me on.

So easy to use. I would definitely get the optional mount with it. We use it in 3 vehicles and we are impressed with the accuracy. Locally, we know shortcuts and it makes the adjustments very well. Fingerprints are our greatest problem.

What to buy my spouse? We're pretty plain people, trying to get our last child safely off to college and pretty much think we have everything important in life. But my love still likes gifts! I tend to be practical and somewhat like buying things that I might like to use but am too proud to buy for myself.
Still, no frills required but darn, it took hours of studying to find the right model after deciding what to buy! So-o-o I bought the Garmin 340. Unlike last year's iPod Nano (aforementioned child uses it for the parent) this baby was hooked up and ready to go instantly! A 600 mile trip later, I've been declared brilliant!
Didn't need the MP3, FM, traffic-stuff ----just plain, easy to read, intuitive, speaks to you device ---- and gets away with telling you where to go! Okay, so it only tells you how to get there.

This street pilot is awesome!! It is easy to use, the voice prompts are great and given earily enough that you can make a lane change in the worst of traffic if need be. I drive in Milwaukee Wi during rush hour traffic and am not very framiliar with the roads and this gadget has been a life saver for me with my new job. I highly recommend it especially if you are not great with electronic gadgets as I am not.

Good price, and excellent delivery. I chose this model due to it's price point (cheaper than the Nuvi)and Garmin reputation for reliability. So far so good. I am glad I got the "better" receiver, but do wish I had gotten the Text to speech (I.E. says the street names, not just "turn left"). The data base isn't quite up to speed (no record of the Atlanta Aquarium...one of the largest in the country?), but I'm hopeful I can update it online. Otherwise, good buy, and no surprises.

I haven't had to the opportunity to utilize the Garmin C530 much but playing with it seems easy enough to use. I have been using it around town and it seems to want to keep putting me on the highway instead of surface streets. Also had to buy updates seperately for maps. If I were to purchase another GPS unit I would go with the Navigon 5100 because it appears to have more features for the same amount of money'

I already own a Garmin gps device, and am very pleased with its performance, so much so that i purchased two of this model as Christmas gifts for my children. they were very happy to receive them ( 3 days ago ) but have not yet put them in service.

I did a lot of research before buying this. I didn't want to be a sheep getting Garmin just because it's popular. However, after exhaustive looking around at other brands, reading review after review, I chose the C550 because it was the least expensive GPS of quality that has bluetooth, which allows you to make hands-free calls through the unit if you wirelessly connect to a bluetooth enabled cell phone. You can then call all of the points of interest in its vast system as well as all of your own contacts that are in your cell phone listings.
I also realized that I rented a car last year and also rented a GPS unit, and it was an earlier model of the same general type, probably a 330. Anyway, my experience with that was so favorable, that I knew I'd like this one also. You see, that rental was in Santa Fe, and if you know the streets of Santa Fe, you know that it would be hard to find a more challenging place to drive around. Tons of one way streets, small, short, out of the way streets, etc. The Garmin I had then never failed to find anything I put in, and made our trip SOOOOO much easier than it would have been without it.
Anyway, I bought the C550 and operation was as easy as I recalled. I just plugged it into the car and it was ready to go. It "found" my bluetooth enabled RAZR phone in a few seconds and within seconds, I was talking to people on the phone through the unit, and they said they could hear me, and I could hear them loud and clear.
Now I can't wait to find all of the shorter routes I know I will find to places of interest. I was also glad that the unit came with an adhesive disk to mount the unit on the dash. My recollection about the suction cup on the window deal is that it can fall off. (However, if you have a GPS and only use windsheild mount, the trick is to wet the suction cup a bit before sticking it on, and then it will stay like a charm. I, however, use the dashboard mount, and the angle is perfect for me, and of course adjustable to however you wish to tilt it.)
It also plays MP3s, so you can load your ipod songs to an SD disk and play them, though I admit I haven't tried this yet.
Love it. Couldn't really ask for more.

Great product for the price (I paid $306 w/ free shipping). Come with 3 free months of the FM traffic service. Comparable to a TomTom 720 w/o mapshare. The mount works on windshield only which is illegal in some states so you may require an optional dash or A/C mount. It has an optional safety feature that requires it to be at rest to program (which can be turned off). This is good because my wife has already had a near miss with a mailbox while trying to multitask. Mount it out of arms length for over ambitious types. Blue tooth works great with my phone. It automatically switches to night mode based on an internal clock. Great product I am considering a second one for my car

This is my first GPS. It's pretty easy to use, does what it's supposed to, is fun to have, takes a lot of the anxiety out of going to new places. Voice is loud and clear, having the street names (text-to-speech) helps a lot. So far have discovered at least one new restaurant from POI.
Drawbacks:
When it gives you a route that, for various reasons, you really don't want to go (questionable area, propensity for sudden traffic jams even if it is unclogged at the moment, etc.) I haven't found any good way to get it to give me a different route instead. Yes, you can choose between fastest and shortest route, etc., but that doesn't usually solve the problem. In one case, I found I could get around it by indicating Triboro Bridge as a stop along the way, but overall it's a limitation. Otherwise, I can go my own way and listen to the voice get kind of peeved as it repeats, "Recalculating," and tries to get me back to the original route until it finally gives up. But that only works if you're pretty confident of a good portion of the trip already. The traffic feature, which is one reason I got this model, hasn't been much help yet and doesn't work in some areas, but I still have to give that feature more of a try. The thickness makes it impossible to stick in your pocket when you don't want to leave it in the car, so you need some kind of bag or case to carry it in. The manual is skimpy and leaves a lot unexplained.
Those issues aside, though, overall I'm happy with it, and some of the drawbacks are probably common to other GPS models as well. Final analysis, I recommend it.

Amazon's price for the Garmin StreetPilot c550 is excellent and the GPs system has easy to use features...and it also talks! Unfortunately, the power chord does not fit a VW Passat or Audi A6 cigarette lighter. Garmin says this is rare but acknowledges that there may be a few car models that cannot use the product. The literature does NOT include this caution.

I was very impressed with the price. It is my first GPS unit. I came in a white box but I didn't care about this. Very easy to use. I loaded the included software and plugged in the USB. Wow nice Garmin software, just click and it does the update so smoothly. I thought I would try to create my own points using Google Earth and the POI loader. Once again it was slick and I put all the local arenas and family locations in for the wife. Really good value for what you get. The unit came with the windshield mount/power unit, 12v power cord , software, USB cable. I would buy another Garmin no question.

The Garmin has been been very helpful and easy to use. I moved to a new area and print maps are good but when you miss a turn ... it's not easy to find an adjusted route. Garmin provides this feature and takes the fear factor out of getting lost.

If you are on a budget and do not want to spend $ on subscriptions, this is the perfect GPS unit. The system worked great right out of the box and is extremely easy to use. The dash mount suction cup is extremely sturdy. Any point that I have looked for, has been found so far. Right before Christmas, I purchased this for under $160, so keep your eyes open and you can find it at that price as well.

this refurbished Garmin is terrific. it's a low end model without many bells and whistles, but we wanted a product we could try out before we invest in a nuvi or a high end TomTom. We tested it by changing our route midway on our trip, and it recalculated in seconds, sending us on our way with pinpoint directions. The voice is fine, too -- actually a human, not digital. For the money, you can't beat it!

The c320 comes with Mapsource City-Select award-winning software on CD (for installation into a notebook or desktop computer) and uses a 128MB SD card which allows you to download a particular region for GPS mapping as you drive. The c330, on the other hand, comes pre-loaded with highly detailed MapSource City Select street data of the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The database features an industry-leading five million-plus points of interest?including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. So, if you do lots of long-distance continental driving, the c330 may be the better value for you. It's also worth mentioning that with some GPS units the manual to use them is as thick as a phone book, but it was a pleasant surprise to find that the c330's manual was very easy to use and provided many screen shots to make sure the user understood the units capabilities. If you find yourself on the road looking for addresses often and just want a GPS to tell you where to go simply and clearly than this unit was made for you.

Ordered for two grown daughters and the husband. The girls loved them and used them right away. The hubby didn't think he "needed" it. (Genetic male flaw) Convinced him it would be helpful on vacations and he decided to keep his too! Very good screen view, very easy to use and just enough features. I wish I had purchased one for myself!

Never Worry About Getting Lost Again.......2007-12-30
After lots of research I chose this as my first Auto GPS. I have used it for the past 3 months around Atlanta, a medium trip to Alabama, and on a 850 mile trip to South NJ. I would buy it again.
Pros
-great windshield mount (holds well yet easy to take off)
-fast calculations
-easy to use
-clear audio
-precise location (I have used earlier Magellan hand held marine models that were sometimes off by what seemed dozens of yards)
-enormous database of attractions, banks, restaurants, etc.
Cons
-you may make an incorrect turn at complex intersections just because of the limited amount of time you have to chose the street the GPS has you taking
-loss of signal around tall buildings (normal)
-no real time traffic or construction info
-no one button addition of locations to your favorite list
The funny thing is that we have taken a 4 hour (each leg) trip twice and have been given different directions for all 4 legs ...although they all took about the same amount of time. You would expect you would be taking the same route each time. I don't mean minor variations either. We went to North Central Alabama from Atlanta via Birmingham (Central) AL and the return directions went through Rome (North), GA.
I have it set to the British Lady voice, I like the accent.
I have not updated the maps or software because I have read several accounts of doing so freezes up the unit. It works so don't fix it. :-)

If you don't know how to find the way home, its really help. But if you want to find some places new, then you may not rely on this GPS. As the map of this model is not new. If you want to get the latest map, you need to buy online for $69.99.

My wife and I have been using this for about a week. Just perfect for our needs: less-stress traveling to unfamiliar places, no trying to squint at maps while driving (I hadn't realized what a stress and how dangerous it is, trying to read a mapquest or map when driving, constantly referring to each new turn instead of focusing on the road) and it works like a dream. So easy to use, finds restaurants, gas stations, lodging, or tap in the name on the touchscreen and it'll find markets, stores, all kinds of stuff.
I downloaded and upgraded the firmware from Garmin, it's a breeze, just install the unit's software on your PC first (follow instructions to the letter and it's simple), then download the automatic upgrader from the Garmin site, and in a couple minutes, you're current.
It acquires satellites here (upstate NY) in 20 seconds or less, and picks excellent routes. If you want to go a different way, it instantly recalculates a new route and sends you on your way.
Wonderful product, does what it's supposed to do, simple to use, easy to pop out of the windshield mount and stick in your windbreaker pocket, purse or glove compartment. I love it! I can't imagine how I lived without it (I get lost all the time up there in these windy country roads)!

I found in using the GPS that I purchased thru Amazon that it did not have streets on it that are over 3 years old. I thought that I would be getting a more current version of maps.

I had a cobra navone 3000, compared to this one, it was so big, bulky and no touch screen. I bought this one for my dad who speaks only chinese and loves driving. He loves it! It has English too!! I can use it also! great direction and many navagation preference choices. I recommend to even non asian users!! for asian users, it is hell of a deal!!

I own this unit and here are the options on the the languages menu that you can select: The manual and box fails to mention Cantonese voice, which is a HUGE selling point for many Chinese people in the US.
