Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Choice for a First GPS.......2008-01-02

My work requires extensive travel in the Western USA. I have had 2 other Garmin GPS units (an old StreetPilot and a Nuvi 350). I prefer the Nuvi 200 overall. It is simple but has the features you need in a GPS. While it doesn't have an MP3 player, etc., that isn't what I bought a GPS for anyway. Also does not say the street name but has voice directions. Also, battery seems to last longer than the 350. It also seems to calculate as fast as the 350. Like all Nuvi it is small and easy to take onto an airplane. My opinion is this is a great value, thus the 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite New Toy!.......2008-01-02

I just love my Garmin. I only used it a few times to places I knew because I just got it! IT is so neat. It tells you exactly where to go, and if you take a different route, it recaculates for you. It lets you know your est. arrival times, speed, roads that are approaching. I like the fact that it tells you what's ahead because where I live a lot of our roads don't even have street signs, and it tells you the road and where it is. It is My Favorite New toy. I can't wait to travel with it. With my Garmin, the possibilities are endless! I can go whereever I want!

5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2008-01-01

This GPS works easily and reliably. You punch in the address where you're going -- an easy step. Then it instructs you how to get there. Watching its little map scroll by is fun.
If you miss a turn, or don't like the looks of a particular road it tells you to take, it re-calculates and helps you continue along.
In all, it does just as you'd want it to.

4 out of 5 stars A great navigation GPS.......2007-12-31

The Garmin nuvi 200 is great for navigation purposes. The interface is simple and straightfoward. Even my parents were able to figure it out. I was impressed by how many points of interest it had and the detail and coverage of the maps that came with the unit.

If you need something to help you get around town and don't need an MP3 player and fancy stuff like that this it the unit for you. This unit might not be good for hiking. It only allows for a maximum of two waypoints and will not remember a path of where you've been.

5 out of 5 stars Garmin 200Nuvi.......2007-12-31

This is #4 GPS in my possession, airplane, boat and 2 car. By far this is the best unit from a user friendly mode. It will get you there in the best manner possible. Jusst take a few minutes to review its features. I do have a built in, in my Subaru Tribeca-- terrible!!--it can never get me anywhere -- it actually gets lost!! I use the Garmin in that vehicle. Have driven from Fl. to Ct. to Canada to D.C. and always got there the fastest way possible. I have used it when towing my antique car to Indiana and it avoided tie ups for me. I can't say enough about Garmin.(or as we call her "Carmin Garmin".

Garmin nüvi 200W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Amazon.com Product Description

comparison of 4.3-inch screen to 3.5-inch screen

Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. View larger.

nüvi 200W accepts custom points of interest (POIs). View larger.

The nüvi 200W comes preloaded with maps for U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and features an ultra-slim design.
The widescreen version of Garmin's nüvi 200 offers a large, easy-to-read screen (4.3 inches diagonally to the nüvi 200s 3.5 inches) at an attractive price point. Like its smaller sibling, the 200W comes with preloaded maps for the continental U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. If you want maps for all of North America, check out the nüvi 250W. If you want maps for Europe, you'll need to go with the smaller nüvi 270, or you can purchase a set of European maps on SD Card or CD-Rom. While it doesn't have some of the more sophisticated features of higher-end nüvis, it does, like all nüvi 200-series members, offer a rock-solid navigation experience with an easy-to-use colorful touchscreen, 6 million points of interest (POI)s, and an ultra-slim design.

See More of What's Around
The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

Smart, Powerful Design
The nüvi 200W is built with a high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. All this is wrapped up in a package that measures 4.8 x 2.9 x 0.8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs just 6.6 ounces. The nüvi 200's 4.3-inch (diagonal) display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.

Navigate with Ease

In addition, nüvi 200W accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Garmin nuvi 200W is really cool!!!!.......2008-01-02

Garmin nuvi 200W is really cool!!!!

I did all my online research and red all the positive reviews of this machine.

The features and value cannot be touched by TomTom or Magellan at the same price range.

I love it, go buy it :)

1 out of 5 stars Trouble Aquiring Satellites.......2008-01-02

I picked this up as a second basic GPS at Dillards of all places for $150 today.

It is very slow at acquiring satellites. Takes a long time. My other unit that I own which is a TomTom acquires them immediately, even when inside buildings.

It is very basic unit. No frills at all.

Many of the POI's are incorrect and many missing. The POI database is very frustrating to use because of the inaccuracies and there is no way to make edits or updates to the existing POI's on the unit like I can do on my TomTom. You can also not create custom POI's on the fly on this unit like my TomTom allows. No MapShare feature like TomTom has, so you are stuck with inaccuracies in the map and POI's until Garmin releases a new map in a year or two and then you have to pay $69 to buy it.

Map detail is quite basic on this unit. My TomTom shows much greater detail with color shading of terrain and building footprints in many areas. This unit also only includes the continental USA, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. If you want full coverage including Canada and Alaska, you should buy the Garmin nuvi 250W for just a few bucks more. Routing is slow and you must have patience. I have no idea what speed and type of processor this thing has and the Garmin Website specifications tell you nothing about the real specs like this including how much memory it has. It must be a pretty slow processor based on the performance. Map drawing is slow too.

The form factor is pretty nice. Fairly slim and trim. The unit is kinda of slippery and it would be easy to drop. Garmin gives you no case, that is $20 more ! You better buy one before your new toy goes sliding across the concrete sometime and really gets messed up. The SD card slot is handy to put some photos of the rugrats on or for those extra maps you might buy that are not included.

If you want a basic GPS and you have to have Garmin I would recommend spending the few extra bucks and going for the Garmin Nuvi 250W with better map coverage.

I think I will play with this a couple of weeks and return it ( I have 30 days ) as I can tell right away even at the low price I paid it disappoints me since I have gotten spoiled by my TomTom.

Not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Local maps are lacking.......2008-01-02

A fine product, well designed. BUT I've discovered some of the maps do not reflect reality, specifically as relates to local businesses (couldn't find the entrance to the AMC movie theatre ... but I didn't miss the movie!). Also does not show some very sensible, logical "shortcuts" until you make the turn and it recalculates the directions from there.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent First GPS!.......2008-01-02

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband and he loves it. It is simple and straight-forward and doesn't have all those extras you wouldn't use anyway. We researched online and shopped around our area before deciding on this particular model.

5 out of 5 stars Great, simple, easy to use GPS.......2008-01-02

I received this for Christmas and just used it to navigate a 400 mile trip to the beach and back. It works great and found a path I normally don't take but turned out to be very efficient in time. The GPS functions are easy to use. The map has good detail and was very accurate. The only complaint is that it doesn't show elevation (I don't know if this is a standard feature on auto GPS units, as this is my first car GPS.) I am very happy with this device.

The 260 is the first 200-series nüvi  to offer text-to-speech, which allows the device to give directions with real street names (i.e. "turn right at Main Street," as opposed to "turn right"). Before the 260, the text to speech feature was only available on the 300-series and 600-series nüvis. Like the nüvi 250, it comes pre-loaded with complete, Navteq data-driven maps for the United States, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico. If you want maps for Europe, you'll need to get the nüvi 270, which does not have the text-to-speech feature, purchase a set of European maps on SD Card or CD-Rom. 5 out of 5 stars Great GPS .......2008-01-02

I purchased this item as a christmas gift for my husband who is sooo not techno savy. He took a 2 hour trip with it a couple of days after and absolutely loved it. He had also gotten directions from mapquest and he said he would have gotten lost without the gps. It took him straight to where he needed to go. I'm so glad I researched this product and everyone's review was very helpful in making my decision to purchase this garmin gps.

4 out of 5 stars Great basic GPS with text-to-speech.......2007-12-31

This GPS might not have all those fancy features like mp3 and traffic update of the high end models, but it does very well the basic functions of a GPS, with what I consider as the essential Text-To-Speech function.

I've had this unit for about a month and a half now, and here are some pros and cons I've discovered:
Pros:
Excellent route mapping. Nearly always plots the route I'd plot myself.
Clear warnings well ahead of time (I think it adjusts when it gives the warning depending on your speed).
Also tells me to which side the next next turn will be on right before I make my next (upcoming) turn, so I know which side of the road to keep onto (good for traffic heavy roads).
Recalculations are fast: Driving downtown with those really short distances between intersections, this GPS manages to recalculate a new route if I missed a turn.
Bright screen, good, large graphics, nice day-time contrast, auto color switch for night time driving, intuitive interface for setting ur destinations

Cons:
Slow boot up, satellite acquisition can take a while in places with lots of tall buildings (up to 5-8min!) when boot up for first time (fast acquisition after that)
Alphabetically listed keyboard, no way to switch!!(bad for geeks like me)
POI search a bit slow if u're searching by spelling (search by pre-defined categories are fairly fast)
If you've set in a security code, u have to reboot the GPS if u misentered it (or go to your preset security location)

Overall, this GPS is great, performs all the functions of a GPS to near-perfection. So if you're just looking for a hassle free GPS that you can rely on to guide you everywhere you go, this is the unit for you.

3 out of 5 stars A map problem eroded my trust in it........2007-12-31

I've had my Nuvi 260 for a month now. The unit is small, good-looking, very easy to set up, came with the latest version of their maps but... if I followed its direction I'd never get out of my neighborhood.

Driving from my home on GA SRXX I need to turn right on Hwy YYY. My nuvi260 tells me to first turn left on ZZZ Rd. about 200 ft from the Hwy, and then make a right U-turn on HwyYYY. The problem is that ZZZ Rd. DEAD ENDS in bushes and there is no way to get to the Hwy from there. This problem makes me wonder where else my nuvi will send me to when I'm in a location I do not know.

Garmin's customer support was very apologetic about this snafu and directed me to the web site where you can report such map deficiencies. But that was it, no patches offered. I guess I'll have to wait until they have a new version released and pay another $70 to get it.

Aside from this one dead-end trap (that I've discovered), my nuvi260 has been giving me generally good directions in my everyday driving within ~100 miles from my home. I'm yet to test it on an out-of state trip.

Overall, I like having a "live" map in front of me with my location clearly marked, particularly when driving at night in a city. The voice prompts about upcoming turns, often with "funny" pronunciations of street names, are very useful in locations you do not know, and they can be muted if you find them distracting. The display of the distance to the next turn is particularly useful for me and saved me several times already from making turns too soon. For the price Nuvis can now be purchased for(~$260), it is a good driving aid to have in your car. But do not trust it completely...!!

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi 260.......2007-12-30

So far we have used this product three times - it is very easy to program, visuals are clear and voice prompts very helpful - as with all GPS systems, you should check a map as it has sent us a long way to a destination, when we knew a shorter route. We also purchased the friction mount for the Nuvi 260 and found it very useful.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for home health.......2007-12-30

I have really put my Garmin Nuvi 260 to the test and am very pleased.
I work in home health in a fairly rural area and search for several locations every day. So far I've been able to locate every address in the GPS, but sometimes it has taken a bit of trial and error. For instance, the location city in the GPS is not always the same as the postal address. You can enter 'search all cities' but I usually start with the closest small town and find it pretty quicklly. If the search gives me more than one similar address, I check out the map to see which one sounds similar to the clues my patient has given me. When entering an address on a hwy, you just enter the number of the hwy. With streets with multiple names, you enter the first name (except North etc) then it gives you a list of roads to choose from.
I have programed it for the fastest route and, with the exception of a bridge being out, have agreed with the route it has taken me.
I disable the Avoidances for dirt roads when using the GPS for work and enable the Avoidances for U-turns when using it in our truck when pulling the horse trailer.
Twice, when leaving a driveway or parking lot, the voice has prompted me to turn right when the screen showed the arrow correctly turning to the left. Once, the destination was some 200 yards beyond where the GPS said it would be. Other than that, I've had no problems.
I have not lost my satelite link for more than a second, even during a nasty thunderstorm.
I set the unit in map mode when not using the location finder so that I can see the names of approaching roads, especially at night.
I chose this particular unit because Garmin gets such good reviews, and because of the text-to-speech feature. I no longer have to fumble for directions in my laptop that may not be correct. I get to my destinations a lot faster and I'm a whole lot less frustrated when I arrive. It's a great investment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like Having the Yellow Pages for Every City With You (But Better!).......2007-12-30

I did a tremedous amount of comparison research (including Consumer Reports, GPS review web sites, and Amazon reader reviews) before deciding on the Garmin 650. I was looking for a GPS that had a 4.3 inch screen, spoken street names, was reliable and accurate, was pocket-sized, and wouldn't cost me a fortune. Amazon had the 650 for a great price before Christmas so I bought two, one for my 60-something parents (who had never used a GPS before) and one for myself. After doing a brief run-through with my parents on how to use it, add favorite locations, etc., they were off and driving! They have had no problems with the 650's easy-to-use screens. The arrival time is always right on, and the spoken directions are clear and given with enough lead time that you can exit or slow down for the coming turn with no problem. The spoken road names make it absolutely clear which road you should turn on and it eliminates the need to look at the screen to see the name of the road. Due to its small size (slightly larger than a deck of cards), when we arrive at our destination, I remove the 650 from its mount and slip it into my purse.

The other thing I really like about the Garmin is the extensive Points of Interest listings (such as restaurants, hotels, hospitals, amusement parks, Post Offices, etc.). It is like having the Yellow Pages for every city with you at all times but better! If you want to go to a Point of Interest, the 650, unlike the Yellow Pages, will tell you exactly how to get there. This is very useful when you are somewhere unfamiliar and are looking for a restaurant, for instance. You simply scroll through the restaurants in that city (you can search by type of food to make it quicker to scroll through), choose the one you want, and hit "GO" to get the directions. The phone number is also included in the listing, so you can call ahead to make reservations if you like. You can also enter the name of a favorite store, and it will give you all locations of that store near you, mileage from where you are, etc. This came in handy at Christmas when I was looking for a certain item and couldn't find it. Rather than driving to all the stores and/or calling information for the numbers for local stores, I simply searched for stores near me and called them from 650's Points of Interest listings. What a time (and gas) saver!

Garmin also has the "Garmin Garage" available on their web site. You can download different vehicles to make your road trip more fun, such as a convertible sports car, an SUV, a boat, a Christmas light, etc. We downloaded a blue-nosed reindeer for our Christmas trips. It's a fun little extra, very simple to download and install, and totally free.

Overall, I would recommend the Garmin 650 wholeheartedly for anyone due to its simplicity and accuracy, plus it is a lot of fun! However, I would recommend buying the Bean Bag Mount that Amazon sells separately rather than using the windshield mount that comes with the unit. The Bean Bag Mount is much easier and quicker to use.

5 out of 5 stars Our first GPS.......2007-12-29

The screen is great, and the vocals are surprisingly good (I was expecting to hear directions from Stephen Hawking). After a few test runs that always favored surface streets over freeways, I poked around in the not-terribly-complicated (but without much of an owner's manual, still a bit obtuse) menus and finally switched from the default shortest-route option to fastest-route. The screen is visible in all light conditions. We have bluetooth in the car, so we didn't need that. The sound quality is fine for the voice, but nothing like high-fidelity, not to mention that without a memory card, you won't get very many mp3's on there. All in all, we're happy with the 650.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful GPS Unit.......2007-12-29

I placed this review on CNET as well, but thought it would be worth adding on Amazon too.

I've read many reviews regarding the Garmin's, Tom-Tom's, Magellan, and other GPS units, and finally decided on the Garmin. This is a great unit and I am glad that I decided on this for my purchase.

There are several key factors that make this a great product:

1. Screen - Bright in broad daylight, big at 4.3", easy to use touchscreen

2. Interface - Simple to use, especially for those who aren't tech savy

3. Favorites - You can save your favorite addresses and name them in the system so you can plan routes from often used addresses over and over (I can't believe how many reviews I read that said Garmin didn't have this - they obviously didn't know how to use the unit).

4. Points of interests - Lots of points of interest to look up as you travel along your route.

5. Reroutes - Quickly reroutes you if you miss a turn or need to get around traffic - a matter of seconds.

6. Satellite reception - Awesome - finds satellites in seconds and has great reception even in structures.

7. Variety of map views - The 650 has both 2D and 3D map views, giving you a variety of ways of looking at your route. This is helpful in trip planning.

8. Clear voice instructions - The route instructions are loud and easy to hear, even on the freeway.

Cons:

1. No zip code lookup - This is the one thing I wish Garmin would add to their nav system. Garmin has you input the state, then city, then address every time when inputting new addresses. It often finds the state, city, and address for you after a few letters, but it still would be much easier with a zip code feature. I think they may add this in the near future as most GPS systems do have this feature. It isn't a deal breaker, however, because of the overall performance of the system.

Things you'll want to buy:

1. Carrying case to protect the unit (Garmin makes one)
2. A/C adapter if you want to charge it in a wall outlet (in my opinion, it isn't necessary, since it comes with both a car charger and a USB cord for charging it on your computer).
3. Friction mount for the car if you don't want to use the suction cup mount (Garmin makes one).

Updating the unit - Garmin offers a utility on their website for updating the unit's software. The latest updates were already on the unit, but it is nice to know that you can update it online.

All in all its a great unit. If you are looking for Bluetooth and Traffic updates, then buy the 660, however, it does cost about $150 more currently.

5 out of 5 stars great unit.......2007-12-29

after a lot of research i decided on the nuvi 650...mainly due to the great reviews it got on amazon and cnet...after using it for a bit i figured i would write a review...in my opinion this unit is great...although...it does lack a few conveniences that i wish it had...for example...my friend's magellan gives him the alititude...and you also have the option to split your map screen so that half of the screen displays the upcoming turn and the other half shows you your position...the nuvi 650 does not have either of these...other than that i have no complaints...i dont need the 650 as a media player since i have an iPod...and i dont need it to have bluetooth technology since i have a bluetooth phone and a jawbone ear piece...as for its abilities as a gps unit...it recalculates your route faster than any other gps i've been able to use...it also picks up satellites very quickly when you first turn it on...the 650 also allows you to pick from a very wide variety of options when it comes to your route selection and many other things...i read one review saying that the voice guidance wasn't quite loud enough...but i listen to my music at pretty high volumes and the gps is loud enough to get my attention...so even if i cant make out what exactly is being said...its showing me the upcoming turn and how far until that turn...so i have no complaints in that regard... overall i would give this unit a 4.5 out of 5...but id rather give it a 5 than a 4 since amazon doesn't give the 4.5 option...i would deffinately recommend this unit to anyone who doesn't desire bells and whistles that most people already have in their pocket (bluetooth phone/etc)

Garmin nüvi 250W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

Amazon.com Product Description

comparison of 4.3-inch screen to 3.5-inch screen

Wider screen lets you see more of what's  around. View larger.

nüvi 250W accepts custom points of interest (POIs). View larger.

The nüvi 250W comes preloaded with maps for U.S., Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, and features an  ultra-slim design.
The widescreen version of Garmin's nüvi 250 offers a large, easy-to-read screen (4.3 inches diagonally to the nüvi 250s 3.5 inches) at an attractive price point. Like its smaller sibling, the 250W comes with preloaded maps for the continental U.S., Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Canada and Alaska. If all you don't need Canada and Alaska, you can get the nüvi 200W at a lower pirce.

The nüvi 250W is built with a high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. All this is wrapped up in a package that measures 4.8 x 2.9 x 0.8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs just 6.6 ounces. The nüvi display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.

Navigate with Ease
nüvi 250W comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty POI database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. In addition, nüvi 250W accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.

Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin's own navigation is easy to use

Custom vehicle icons

Custom vehicle icons let you ride in style, at least inside your GPS. See more icon options.

Beyond Navigation
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 250W features travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map. Optional plug-in SD cards for our line of Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts, so you can customize nüvi for your travel needs.

Note: Like most USB Mass Storage Devices, the nüvi is not compatible with Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows Me.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Garmin Nuvi 250W.......2008-01-01

This GPS is very easy to use and save information. Have used it several times and it has always been correct. The larger screen makes to easier to see from the dash. The voice directions are very clear and loud (you can change the volume level to make it louder or quieter). I recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Does what you want it to do..........2008-01-01

I have used the unit for several weeks. It does what you expect from a GPS. I have not had it direct me off on a 'why did it direct me here?" route.

Possibly a little slow to lock onto the satellites unless it is positioned correctly, but once it has a clear signal it works and does so very well.

The menus are easy and only take a few minutes to learn all of the options.

4 out of 5 stars great value.......2007-12-31

this is my first gps. so far it has been pretty good. its very easy to setup and use, its fairly accurate, the speaker has good range of volume and can get very loud if you need it, and battery life is good. the windshield mount is great! its very stable and doesnt vibrate even when my mirrors shake. the screen is awesome. i havent had any issues with brightness and the touch screen works really well. it feels like its pressure sensitive, though i dont think it is. you can run your finger over the screen w/o accidentally pressing "buttons." it takes a slight pressure to actually make a selection.

it does have its faults however. occasionally the directions are a little off and the preprogrammed addresses are usually close but not always 100% spot on. most of the time it will get you within a few hundred yards. the listings seem a bit outdated (listing locations that have been closed or moved for some time). very rarely, though, they are not even close. just recently it took me to a nonexistent restaurant right in the middle of a neighborhood. also, the unit doesnt deal with detours well (particularly long freeway detours). when on a long detour the announcements get a little annoying and distracting. though you dont really need one, it doesnt come with a user manual. im sure you can download one if you need it (i havent) but should would have been included. also, its a bit cumbersome to have plugged in. i try to keep the 250w charged so this isnt an issue. additionally, i have other usb style car chargers that dont work with the unit. this is a little bit of a disappointment, since it looks like i will have to buy a new charger from garmin if something ever happens to the original.

all things considered, this is a great value. if you dont need an mp3 player (i have a zen), bluetooth (i prefer mine white), an fm transmitter (the speaker is just fine), and some of the other accessories that the more expensive models have, this is the model for you! since i occasionally visit canada, i chose this model rather than the nuvi 200w. if you dont need canada maps then by all means choose the 200w and save some money. my dad liked the gps so much he bought one for himself.

4 out of 5 stars Simple with frills and affordable.......2007-12-30

I received this as a gift. So far, it works great, it is simple and to the point. I do not know why anyone would want more complicated software in it.

It also has a voice, so if yours does not SPEAK, it could be faulty or defective merchandise. The only minus is that you need the additional gimmick of buying a sturdy support base, which is easy to put on the dashboard but bulky. However, for this price Gamin should at least throw the protective case for the screen. This has to be bought separate unless you spend big bucks on an advanced model.

5 out of 5 stars GARMIN 250W.......2007-12-30

Absolutely as advertised right out of the box. This is a terrific GPS, no frills, no MP3 etc. It is very user friendly and my only negative experience has been knowing a better local route, in which case the GPS recalculates and moves on with your trip.

All of the nüvi 700s come pre-loaded with maps for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The nüvi 760 and 770 add Bluetooth capability for hands-free calling. The nüvi 770 adds maps for Europe.

New Features -- Where Am I?
Sometimes, you don't have a specific destination in mind. You just want to know what's nearby. Garmin's easy-to-access, "Where Am I?" feature makes this easier than on just about any navigation device. Just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. nüvi 750 even remembers where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

New Features -- Route Planning

Garmin has thrown some new features into the 700s as well. One of the niftiest is called "automated sorting for multiple destinations." Basically, this lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, Garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).

A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.

First Rate Map Data
The nüvi 750 is preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps for the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. This map database features nearly six million points of interest (POIs), including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

See Better, See More
The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views.

Easy To Use Interface
Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Garmin's own navigation is easy to use

Smart, Powerful Design
The nüvi 750 is built with a high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. All this is wrapped up in a package that measures just 4.8 x 3.0 x .8 inches (12.2 x 7.6 x 2.0 cm) (W x H x D) and weighs just 6.2 ounces. The nüvi 750's 4.3-inch (diagonal) display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.

Trick Your GPS Ride

With this GPS system on board you'll be prepared to steer clear of traffic with the integrated FM TMC traffic receiver. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars OTR Trucker Loves Nuvi 750.......2007-12-26

I gave a Garmin Nuvi 750 to my hubby as an early Christmas gift after he had a harrowing experience in Jersey City. He called me from the road and I asked him how the Garmin was working for him. His reply: "God, Garmin and my wife! What would I do without them?!". It didn't bother me that Garmin usurped my position briefly as I was delighted that he was able to find his middle of the night destinations to unknown places in unknown cities with poorly marked streets because his NUVI 750 guided him right to the door! Er....make that DOCK. In the past 4 weeks he has been to TX, IL, TN, SC, OH, Maine, PA, MI, IN and WI amd points in between....AND not necessarily in the previous order stated. He NEVER GOT LOST ONCE. By the way. What is a SIRF?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Device.......2007-12-23

I have owned this unit for about 3 weeks now and thought it was time I shared my two cents worth.

After reading the reviews before purchasing my 750 I was greatly concerned with some of the comments I had read regarding long satellite acquisition times, tinny sound from the speakers and poor navigation at times. Over the years I have bought several other Garmin devices (60CS and Forerunner 305) and absolutely love their products. In 3 1/2 years of using their products I have never been disappointed so thought I would take a chance based on past experience and give it a try.

WOW, what a device! Once again Garmin has come through big time. With my biggest concern being long satellite acquisition times I was very please when I first powered the unit on and walked outside that it acquired my position in less than 60 seconds. Thinking maybe I had gotten lucky I decided to put it to the test. By traveling to other areas with the unit turned off I would then turn it on to see if I could duplicate the problems others are claiming but have had no success in doing so. It has never taken more than a minute to acquire a position and show me my exact location, in fact most times I would say it is closer to 40 - 45 seconds.

Speaker quality I find is excellent. This is my first GPS navigator of any kind that speaks turn by turn directions so maybe I'm speaking from ignorance because I have nothing to compare against. That being said, text to speech on this device is very clear, understandable and volume is good. Volume level is currently set at 80%.

Navigation is bang on. There have been times when I have thought that it was going to miss the mark but it has always performed as expected and location has always been accurate.

The one thing negative that I do have to say has to do with the POI's. Although current with relatively new restaurants in our area, it also list several that have been out of business for more than a year. One has been gone for almost 5 years. I would think they could do a better job of keeping things current and I assume this would be typical for other places as well.

Screen is bright and clear and easy to read in almost any lighting condition. At sunset the screen automatically back lites to make it easy to see. The 750 of course only comes in silver but looks great. Additional vehical icons can be downloaded from Garmin's website.

I give this baby a two tumbs up!!!

5 out of 5 stars No Satellite Problems.......2007-12-21

After reading the reviews here, I was very concerned about buying this product as a gift because of the negative reviews related to satellite problems, but it was on sale locally at a price that was hard to turn down. I decided I'd try it out before giving it as a gift, and if I had problems I'd take it back.

So far the nuvi 750 has been performing very well. It took about 45 seconds to get enough satellites the first time I used it, and every time since then I've never had to wait on it. It makes a big difference if I have it mounted on the windshield (and the windshield mount supplied with it works great). If I'm holding in my hand between the front seats, it's not so great, so I don't know how well it would work if you plan to mount it low on the dash or on a center console.

It has performed almost perfectly so far on picking out routes and tracking my prog
