You can use the 60Cx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. The unit comes preloaded with an Americas autoroute basemap that provides automatic routing capabilities including highways, exits, and tide data. There's also a preloaded marine point database. You can even get turn-by-turn directions when you're driving, and an integrated trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more.
The 60Cx's 2.6-inch, 256-color TFT color display is designed to present mapping and trip information clearly and accurately in any lighting conditions. Plus, the case is lightweight, rugged, and water resistant to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for 30 minutes). When using two AA alkaline batteries, you'll get up to 30 hours of battery life from the unit.
Another key feature of the 60Cx is the 10,000 point automatic track log; 20 saved tracks (500 points each) let you retrace your path in both directions. There's also a large-numbers option for easy viewing, as well as a dual-position display mode. The also unit includes built-in celestial tables for best times to fish and hunt, plus sun and moon calculations.
The 60Cx's trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more. Meanwhile, a fast processor allows the 60Cx to provide quick auto-routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts when you use the optional MapSource software, which can be stored on the unit's included 64 MB microSD card. Great Unit.......2007-12-03
Bought this unit so we can adapt it from the truck to the Harley to the boat to the snowmobile to the ATV's or while hiking/hunting. And it has worked well for all applications and easy to use without reading the directions. But that being said we may get a "regular" auto-type Garmin GPS for the truck only because of the ease of entering addresses (touch screen)and the larger display.

The 60cxs is the same as the CX except that the CXS has barometric altimeter for extremely accurate elevation data and an electronic compass, both features are found on the CX, but just not as accurate and I'm fine with that.
I did snap off the locking D-ring from the back of the unit (my fault) and Garmin customer service was great on getting me a replacement @ N/C, "no questions asked" which is unheard of these days.
Using the 60cx.......2007-11-18
The Garmin 60cx is one terrific handheld GPS with incredible reception and an easy-to-use interface. The only downside is that Garmin could do a better job with its maps. But here are the details...
Satellite reception - The 60cx has unbelievably good reception. In fact, in the last year I've never lost tracking even when hiking in tight canyons or under forest canopy. And where I got 3-4 satellites before I'm now getting 6 or more; that translates into tighter locating. This is the reason I chose to go with Garmin over Magellan and others.
Battery life - With new alkaline batteries I'm getting about two days' use. Note: for some reason new lithium batteries, which give me a bit more time, sometimes cause the unit to automatically shut down. If you drain them slightly in another device they work fine. Very odd.
Storage - The 64MB card that comes with the device is not adequate for my uses. Fortunately, you can replace the card - in my case with a 1GB miniSD card. Some people complain about the size of the included card, but I'm accustomed to the ridiculously small cards that come with digital cameras these days.
Maps - I'm slightly disappointed in Garmin's maps, hence the four stars. I have the City Navigator, U.S. Topo map and suite of national park maps. Generally, I've had no problem in city/highway navigation. But hiking using the topo and national park maps I've run into unexpected map gaps.
Screen - Little difficulty reading the large color screen even in sunlight. I went for the 60cx over the eTrek line because of the larger view and better receiver.
Handling - The device is a little big with the antenna at the top. When hooked to my belt, unless positioned carefully, it can jab me in the side when I bend over. But it's an acceptable tradeoff for the reception quality and large viewing screen. Having the buttons at the bottom of the device can be a little awkward - it would be easier to hold the device and page through with the buttons higher up (as on the 76 models) All in all, though, very easy to use.
Build quality - It seems very solid. I've dropped from belt high more times than I can count, drenched it in water at the bottom of a canoe, left it sitting in the desert sun for hours and propped it up in the snow with no ill effects.
Comparisions - If you're trying to decide between the 60CSx and the 76Cx, here are the key differences: With the CSx, the only difference is the electronic compass and altimeter. After perusing the message boards a while, it appears functionality of the barometric altimeter is not exceptional. The electronic compass, however, enables you to get a bearing when you're standing still, while the Cx version captures your direction only when you are moving. The digital compass would be useful, but it also puts more drain on your batteries, and when hiking I'm always carrying an analog compass as a backup anyway. The 76 is a marine model that floats and has a 128MB card included instead of the 64MB card in the 60. It has a rounded top and the buttons are above the screen - more ergonimic.

My second GPS unit. First one was a DeLorme attached to a PC, which worked well but was VERY slow to start up, and cumbersome.
I agree with all the 5 star review comments about quality of construction and sattelite capture speed of the GPSMap 60CSx. I am, however, greatly disappointed in the "Base maps" sold with the unit. These maps are so limited as to render the unit useful for city to city navigation only. The base maps show major highways only (state/county highways or larger roads-interstates), and include no local roads, a fact Garmin does not disclose in any of the sales material I read. They should be clear that you must buy more detailed maps, and where to get them.
After looking over the Garmin web site, I purchased the suggested MapSource Topo maps on CD for almost $100, and was stunned at the poor detail on these maps also. On first use in my back yard, the unit indicated that I was across the street in a neighbor's yard perhaps 100-200 feet away, and that was in New Jersey with eight satellites in view. The unit also could not accurately locate the 100+ acre lake near my home. These maps cannot be useful to anyone attempting to navigate off road, hiking on trails, or travelling on streams/small rivers. The maps simply bear little resemblance to actual geography except they do seem to indicate location of 25 foot topogtaphical elevation lines fairly well (not too useful). I kayak a great deal and had hoped to use the unit to navigate around New Jersey rivers and the sedge islands in Barnegat Bay. Forget about it! There is no correspondence between the Topo map and the actual geography! Totally useless for kayaking intercoastal bays or any of south Jersey's fabulous streams. As it stands, I have invested just under $400 and have little to show for it. I wonder if my ten year old DeLorme maps will work on the Garmin GPSMap 60CSx? I don't know what to do. At this point the unit is practically useless.
takes a beating.......2007-11-13
I keep this unit on my off road motorcycle while trail riding in Montana. It keeps working and always seems to have a strong signal. I don't trust the handlebar mount without securing it with additional heavy rubberbands, but no issues to date.

This purchase was to update an older Magellan Map 330. I was excited to see the device and quickly found it easy to use. I purchased the Garmin MapSource 2008 and then disapointment set in. After loading a section of the local topo map, i went out of the house to test it. It had my location almost 200 feet to the north of my house with 8 stations in view. A driving test had me as much as three streets off at times. I would stop the car and check outside and the error remanined. A Dolorme LT-20 with a laptop on the car seat was dead on. After comparing a friends 60Cx, he had the same problem. It's a shame that Garmin does all this development and then provides such inaccurate maps. It is sitting in the glove box for emergency use only to determine north and south.... pitty...

Unclear instructions & unavailable service.......2007-03-17
I returned this product for a full refund due to unclear instructions and no repsonse from customer service. The instructions provided in the owner's manual on entering bearing and distance to find a new waypoint were unclear. I was unable to reach the Garmin customer service via email (maybe their server was down) or by phone. I tried to phone them 2 or 3 times during business hours and was unsuccessful in reaching a person. I wanted to enter coordinates, latitude and longitude, to find a new location and was disappointed that I never found out if this product could do this or not. Also, I was unable to enter a bearing and a distance to find a new location.
Piece of JUNK!.......2007-03-01
The maps that come with this unit are wortless. If you want good maps, be prepared to shell out $100. My biggest gripe is that my GPS WILL NOT talk to my computer! That makes it IMPOSSIBLE to load my $100 maps. I tried to connect to both of my PCs at home AND my PC at work. All came up with the same message - USB Device Not Recognized. My friend in Utah has the same problem - and a bad temper. He threw his Garmin against the wall and killed it. He bought a Magellan and is very happy with it.
I would have rated it ZERO stars if the option had been available. I will NEVER buy anything from Garmin again!
I've contacted Garmin NUMEROUS times and they are no help at all - and have completely ignored me for the past month or so.
Garmin GPSmap 60...better than I'd hoped.......2006-02-28
Last year I did a motorcycle trip from Kennedy Space Center in Florida to Edwards Air Force Base in California. Along the way I planned stops at every NASA related site I could think of and in preparation for that trip I purchased a Garmin eTrex Legend. After a few days of playing around with it, it quickly became apparent that while the Legend is a nice little unit, it was woefully inadequate for my needs.
So I picked up a GPSmap 60 and never looked back. The ability to load custom maps of certain area's was a very nice perk, but even the base map was very good for what I was doing.
As other reviewers have noted, it gets a good solid lock in the worst conditions (heavy tree cover, clouds, rain, and indoors) though sometimes the accuracy does degrade beyond what it would lead you to believe. As an example, with this unit I can get a four or five satellite lock, with an listed accuracy of under twenty feet, the reality is that the accuracy is closer to fifty or sixty feet...but at least I have a lock when most others don't.
This is a very solid unit, it feels like it was made for use and abuse. And this is one area where I was slightly disappointed in the unit. It feels rugged, but it only handled about 2000 miles of vibration from being attached to the motorcycle handlebars before the contacts in the batter compartment had to be "adjusted" to remain in contact with the batteries.
Which brings up another point. I don't even bother with rechargeable batteries in this beast anymore. It drains them quickly when compared with non-rechargeable batteries.
Over all I highly recommend this system, even over the color versions that are out. At this price its hard to beat in terms of quality and features.
Garmin GPSMap 60 more than I expected........2006-02-24
I am thourghly thrilled with my purchase. This little unit does way more than I hoped for. I am just looking for excuses to do some interesting treasure hunting and exploring with it on my side.
Although the map sourse products are quite expensive and I haven't yet purchased any I am anxious to eventually buy and use them. I am yet a novice with the unit I have, but it is easy to follow the instructions with it and if you don't know a thing about navagiting you will be adding way points and finding them in a couple quick practice sessions.
I am happy I bought the Garmin. I'm sure other units are just as good, but I liked everything I read about this one.

Great Unit.......2007-09-04
This is a great gps... very easy to use. I didn't want a complicated interface, and this one is about as simple as it gets. The page key navigates you thru the different functions, and you can mark a spot with two keystrokes. It automatically leaves a trail of where you've been, so as long as it's on you can't get lost, (unless the batteries run down, but one set lasts for five or six trips, at least). I use it on my kayak and it handles getting wet and salty pretty well- I just dunk it in fresh water after every trip.
My only regret is that I didn't buy the next one up- the one with the maps and marine charts. But this is a great unit for the money.
Hard to use.......2007-08-23
I bought this specifically for geocaching. The instructions are insufficient to figure out how to punch in coordinates that you already know. Maybe I need a 13 year old to figure this out, because the 12 year old I know couldn't, and neither could I!
Good product for the price.......2007-05-24
This is my first GPS device, we started looking at different devices to track or mountainbiking rides.
At the begginig I tought buying a more specialized product, but this one is great for the price.
Getting the sattelites is not that fast but I'm not bothered on waiting 3 minutes, sometimes it loose reception if the woods are to dense but as soon as I can see the sky, reception comes back.
Anyway for my first GPS its a great buy!!
Im going out walking and riding my bike even more now that I can actually see wher I've been in Google earth.

This is a good, but higher level basic GPS. Picks up satelites reasonably well, except in heavier tree cover. Clear and readable display. The unit performs as advertised. What I don't like about it is the 1MB memory limitation. I'm interested in downloading National Park topo maps and the 1MB memory limits me to one quadrant in the typical western US MapSource Western National Parks. If your one day trail spans more than one map grid or if you plan a multiday hike you are out of luck. I'm not a geocacher, so I was looking for the basics -- altitude, direction, track some of my way points. The maps was a nice to have. But once I started playing with them, I liked them and wanted to use them more. That's when I ran into the head room issue. So I upgraded to the GPSMap 60CSx -- more money than I intended to spend, but....
4 Stars because of the memory limitations. If that is not an issue for you, then 4.5 stars.

The 60C's WAAS GPS receiver has an accuracy of 10 feet in North America. With the 50 reversible routes, 10,000 track points, and 500 waypoints, you're sure to have enough tools to find your way. The trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more. Meanwhile, a fast processor allows the 60C to provide quick auto-routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts when you use the optional MapSource software, which can be stored on the unit's 56 MB of internal memory. Downloading information is quick with the USB or serial port interfaces. Using the dedicated serial port, the 60C can share navigation instructions with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots. The four-position rocker pad and dedicated high-use buttons make navigating through the unit's features easy, even when your fingers are cold or wet.
Finally, the GPSMap 60C is packed with some extra fun features. An integrated outdoor calendar provides ideal hunting and fishing times, plus moon rise/set/location information. There is a dedicated geocaching mode for those of you into the hot GPS community treasure hunt game. Finally, there are indoor/outdoor GPS games to help you and your friends enjoy the outdoors.
Garmin produces some key accessories for the 60C. If you'll be on the road, Garmin's U.S. topographical MapSource CD-ROM provides the most detailed maps available. Or, for a combination of detailed U.S. maps and a car kit for mounting and powering your GPS, there's an automotive accessory pack for North America.

This is probably my 4th handheld GPS. I also own a bluetooth GPS for the PC. I use the GARMIN in my car sometimes, but mainly on my kayak trips.
Before this I had a Magellan Sportrak color. It was stolen and replaced with this unit after I tried a friend's Garmin.
I use this GPS frequently and it is hands-down my favorite. It doesn't do the same job a GPS meant for a car does, but for the outdoors it is great.
I have downloaded maps onto it (it appears to only like Garmin maps) and everything was easy.
The display is bright and clear even in open sunlight on the water, something I could not say for the Magellan.
I highly recommend this model for hiking, biking, and kayaking.

This Garmin hand-held gps unit has gotten me safely home countless times. It recalculates the directions for you if it senses that you have gone off course along the way. It remembers several "waypoints" for quick route calculations and it has tons of useful features like your mph or the amount of time left on your trip. You can also tag locations that you'd like to revisit. The only reasons I gave it four out of five stars is that it has a small amount of memory and it takes a while to get a reading from the satellites - so you can't use it, for example, if the sky is blocked by many buildings. Though, you can get the satellite reception from a clearing (like an intersection) and once you've got it you won't lose it unless you go into a tunnel or something. En Fin - It is great for short road trips.

Garmin has always been #1 in the GPS market. The other guys, have one or
two models and pack them with features like "picture viewing", that's
right now how is that needed in a GPS? Are you going to the photomat or something?
This unit is excellent. I've used it hiking and riding my ATV. This unit
just has everything an amature hiker/explorer could want. It's easy to
use, just take a few minutes and go through the menus. It's great easy
icons with text describing each one, and the screen is nice and easy to
see. And having the feautre of backtracking where you tell the unit to
take you back the way you came and you can see it clearly on the map
displayed on the screen is fantastic.
Overall excellent purchase, and I enjoy it everytime I use it.

I have been using this item nearly everyday for the past two months. It is a nice unit but has a few flaws. When walking with it and having it set to "track up" (point the direction you are going instead of always pointing north on the map) it doesn't always have you tracked up. I have had the unit turn off on me a few time for no reason and just little hick-ups a few times. Other then all that I wish I had purchased an upgraded model with larger internal memory as I like to have all the geocaches in my area on there (i can put 1000 on there right now)

If your using a 64 bit OS you will not be able to download maps to unit until Garmin provides driver support. Other then this it's a great product!

Lost GPS with this terrible cover.......2007-12-29
Clipped the GPS to my webbing using the clip/screw (with loctite), and the screw backed out-- lost GPS. Anything that is not a pouch with permanent straps to put on a belt is going to loose your GPS.
This thing is a terrible piece of engineering, but Garmin probably likes it because they loose and sell more units this way.
Do yourself a favor-- do NOT use this case. You will loose you GPS.

Protective case does protect, but does not enable you to have it protected and in your car holder or atv holder at the same time. Also does not provide a hole for plugging in the separate car charger. The cover is durable but when buttons are pushed it tends to be much harder than it should be. If the velcro closure on the bottom is put too tight, then the rocker or enter buttons on the garmin get stuck down.

The case fits perfect on my GPS Map 60csx - you can see through the front nicely. However, the plastic is snug against buttons and makes it difficult to push them. Sometimes when you push one - it won't do what you wanted. It is a great case though for storing or carrying. But you'll most likely take it out of the case for heavy use or hiking, etc.

This works very well. Hold the garmin gps securly. It does not allow you to have the protective case on at the same time as being in the holder though. This would be very handy when I am on my ATV.

I purchased two of these handlebar mounting units. One is used on my mountain bike and the other is used on my motorcycle. This mount is easy to install and easy to use. The GPS 60csx and 60cx fit perfectly. However, I have a couple of concerns.
1. The unit is completely made of plastic. While riding, the unit is in full sun--either mountain bike or motorcycle. I don't know how long before the plastic starts breaking down and falls apart.
2. The mount does not allow for minor angle adjustments--you have to find the right spot to mount it on your handlebar and hope it faces you correctly. Otherwise the GPS receiver screen may be difficult to read. Mine has a slight angle to the right but I can see the screen.
Overall, I am satisfied with this mount and would buy it again.
