Great GPS.......2008-01-01
I bought my Venture HC this fall and it's great. Picks up sat quickly and keeps working in the woods. This isn't a routing gps, If I wanted a routing gps I'd buy a nuvi. I also bought the TOPO 2008 which is great.

The Venture HC is great. Its easy to use and it is pretty accurate. The H in the HC means high sensitivity chip. This wont make it any more accurate but it will help you still receive a signal under tree cover.
If this unit is in your price range but the Vista is not then get it. Otherwise upgrade to the vista as it has better battery life and you can get the removable memory.
For me it was at the right price and has enough features for me. This was my first GPS unit and I havent had any issues with it. It has worked very well for geocaching.
Excellent GPS.......2007-11-20
I wanted a GPS primary for hunting and have used Garmins with good success in the past. This model provided all the features I was looking for and more. I never once lost reception while hunting even in the deepest woods. The unit worked equally well in a pocket or inside the truck which wasn't the case with the previous GPS units I've used. I've recently started using my GPS while running to track milage and speed. The Trip Computer will track distance, max speed, average speed, time spent moving and time spent stopped. While you have to reset the data each time it's still a very useful tool.

Better Reception with the eTrex Venture HC.......2007-10-19
I was very pleased with the purchase of my new eTrex Venture HC. I've used a Garmin Legeng Cx for geocaching for the last year and coords jump off too much under heavy canopy. This is not the case with the new eTrex Venture HC. I was also able to load Topo and City maps without any trouble using my old software. I also had no problems loading waypoints directly using GSAK software.

You can also use the Venture Cx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. Like on all eTrex units, the primary controls are located on the side of the unit, so you can operate it with one hand. I bought this unit in May 07 to geocache with. I also bought a 2GB micro SD card for $25 and City Navigator Ver.8 at the same time.
Pro's:
Small, this unit is tiny.
Incredibly bright crisp display.
Batteries last a long time.
Rugged and waterproof.
All US street maps fit on 2GB with room to spare.
Turn by turn navigation
Con's:
Side mounted buttons take some getting used to.
Becomes inacurate in deep woods. No big deal hunting deer, big
deal hunting caches.
Only holds 500 way points or geocaches.
No internal compass, makes geocaching more difficult.
No good car mount options that I found.
All in all this is an excellent unit. However if you need something very accurate or something you'd like to be able to use in your house or a parking garage get a unit with the SIRF II chip. With no internal compass this unit only shows heading while it is moving. If heading is important, get a unit with a built in compass. I just upgraded to a 76csx unit that does everything and only costs $120 more right now.
Color 24K Maps take GPS out of the Stone Age.......2007-12-01
Pros: High Contrast Color LCD - easily readable in sunlight or dark, the GPS position pointer shows where you're at on the map in real time, no transposing. Vast Memory with microSD, Incredible array of odometer functions, Full text editor to mark special points. Multi-day battery life. Surprisingly useful alarm clock.
Cons: Too many confusing buttons, loses signal occasionally even on bare ridges, would like a bigger screen.
This is my first GPS, before color maps they made no sense. Knowing your absolute position as Latitude and Longitude is worthless without context, maps provide the context. Far better to have the maps inside the GPS than a paper map blowing in the wind. I selected the Venture Cx because it is the lowest cost entry into a color mapper with a microSD card.
I loaded my Venture with Above the Timber's 24K Colorado Topo Maps, awesome!!! Being able to navigate with 40-foot contours inside the GPS is far better than a huge paper quad and trying to figure out where on that map you are. With the microSD card, I have the same detail as 1280 - 7.5-minute quads inside the GPS at all times with 600MB to spare. The GPS position pointer is always on the map at my exact location, all the time. If I have the tracklog on, usually do, then I have a "bread crumb" trail of the path I took to get to my present position. The tracklog is particularly useful for off trail bushwhacking.
I took a 4-day backpack into the Weminuche Wilderness in Sept. and all I had were the Venture and Above the Timber's Topos, no paper maps. It logged my trip, allowed me to enter special points with a text descriptor and various position and time parameters. The maps inside the GPS were more current than my Trails Illustrated maps. BTW, my spare batteries went into the camera, the Venture had plenty of power in reserve.
On a least four occasions since I got the Venture, I was able to navigate to distant small lakes, none of which had a trail to it. The lakes were each on the map and with the position pointer, I was able to determine my position relative to the lake. If I needed to, I could quickly determine the distance from me to the lake, using the GPS' distance function.
The only drawback to the Venture is the lack of a barometric altimeter, like the Vista. It's not less accurate than the Vista, it's just that the barometric altimeter is required for elevation logging. Because of the highly variable satellite geometry, satellite derived elevation has too much drift for elevation logging.
If you buy any of these Garmin mappers, be sure it has an "x" in the model name, or it won't have enough memory for color maps. X = microSD.

I purchased the Garmin eTrex Venture CX after doing a lot of research on hand held GPS units. I picked it because of the batter life, waterproofing, and price. 2 hours after I opened my package I updated the software (firmware) as suggested by Garmin. After the update my unit wouldn't even turn on.
I called Garmin, they were very cool, sent me my new unit next day. I now very much enjoy the unit.
Easy to use, many many many extra features. I would have given it 5 stars if not for the firmware problem. I have no problems getting a signal except in multi level building (duhhh) no problems in the car, outside, etc.
The Bomb!.......2007-11-06
This is nearly the perfect GPS. I previously owned the Garmin 12MAP.
The 12MAP is a much larger unit with a fixed (SMALL) amount of memory.
With the eTrex Venture Cx you can buy a microSD card and put as many
maps as your heart desires.
I do almost all of my hiking/backpacking in The Sierras. With the
Garmin TOPO and Garmin National Parks West I'm golden.
With the NP West maps you can AUTO-ROUTE the TRAILS! With 1 click I
can see how far it is to my destination AND a profile of the elevation.
The unit is very small and fits into my front pocket. I keep it on
all the time while hiking. When I get home I can upload the tracks
and bring up Google Earth and see EXACTLY where I was hiking.
(All this is built into MapSource from Garmin)
With the Garmin 12MAP I would only bring a GPS when I knew I was
going off-trail or during the early spring months when there is
still snow on the ground. Now I bring the eTrex on every backpack
trip. By the way, the National Parks Maps are 7.5 degree so they
are as good as any USGS map.
If you are thinking of getting the more expensive Legend or Vista
I don't think it is worth it IMO. You can get the elevation from
the main screen and you can get a compass reading by just walking
in straight line.
You may want to consider the high sensitivity receiver but getting
a lock on satellites has never really been a problem. It's too
bad that they don't have an Venture HCx.
Anyway, I hope I helped some. I love this device! And Garmin customer
service is incredible if you have any issues.
Just looked and really the Legend HCx is pretty much the Venture Cx with
high sensitive receiver. It has 25hrs or battery life compared to
32hrs for the Venture Cx. The price is almost the same. I would buy
the Legend HCx at this time if I was buying a new GPS unit.

Roughly the size and shape of a cell phone, the Venture has six buttons that are easily accessible by thumb and forefinger. The Power, Page, Zoom In, Zoom Out, and Find buttons are along the side, with the big-daddy navigation button (a directional click-button akin to a thumb-operated joystick) on the front above the screen. The side buttons are stiff enough that it's nearly impossible to accidentally push one. However, we found the navigation button to be a bit too stiff, which caused us several errors in entering waypoints.
Text was very easy to read--highlights are discernible and menu bars and clickable objects are well defined. The unit also has an excellent backlight, which illuminates the whole screen with a white light, giving excellent contrast and viewing capability at night.
The Venture's interface is split into five different pages, each providing different functions. The main menu page gives you access to your saved routes and tracks, as well as setup for using WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation Service) reception, unit measurement, time, and display. These are all quickly rotated through with the click of the Page button on the right-hand side of the unit.
The map page displays the basemap included with the Venture, and for outdoor excursions it provides all the basics you'll need. It automatically tracks your movements and you can save individual tracks for later viewing. The map is zoomable from 500 miles to 20 feet depending on your preferences. You can place waypoints and places of interest on the map and name and change the icons of each to create your own personalized maps. If you decide you want to go somewhere, press the Find button and you'll get quick access to waypoints, your favorites list, and nearby cities.
The Venture features 1 MB of memory for downloading points-of-interest data--including lodging, business services, banks, and more--from optional CD-ROMs via the included PC cable. Unfortunately, for more detailed mapping you'll need to look to the Garmin eTrex Legend or Vista, both of which have larger memory capacities and the ability to download detailed maps.
Reception was, of course, best outside on a clear day, but the Venture retained most of its functionality under limited cover like small buildings or thick trees.

I have used GPS for years for flying to driving, but a lumber man turned me on to this inexpensive gadget as an invaluable tool for calculating acreage for fertilization or liming of fields. Turn it on, drive around the perimeter of the field you wish to measure, hit the button and it tells you exactly the acreage inside the area. You will pay for it the first time you use it. You will never order more or less than needed again.
Used only a few of its features, but it performed great.......2005-12-06
I bought the Venture back in the summer of 2003 and I was never let down by it. At that time the speedometer on my car went out and as a cheaper alternative to buying the new, expensive gauge cluster for my car, I bought this GPS with a dashboard mount. So this product was used literally every day, sometimes several times a day, and for several hours a day for over 2 years.
First of all, I really only use it in navigation mode with the time, cardinal direction, and the speed being displayed, so I cannot comment an much of the other features of the unit. I have done some minor geocaching with it though, and it performed great for that, although it is tedious to enter in lat. and long. coordinates directly into the unit. I will say that using it as often as I do in my car, it is amazing. To be honest, I did not expect it to last this long. I have never had much trouble with tree cover causing a lost signal, but it does happen on occasion.
From the beginning I used rechargeable batteries and the unit has surprisngly long battery life, even with the backlight on. I replace the batteries about once every week or two, but remember, its on for up to a few hours a day.
All in all, this is a great GPS. Again, I can't vouch for many of its features, but I can vouch for its long life and consistant operation. I have gotten hundreds, if not thousands of hours of use out of this and it has yet to let me down.
Great GPS receiver for basic hiking and backpacking........2004-12-29
I returned a Cobra GPS 100 and upgraded to the eTrex Venture for the extra money. What a difference only a few dollars more can make! this is my first GPS unit ever, and I had no problems picking everything up within a day.
For starters, it only took about two minutes to locate a satellite for the first time (supposed to take up to five) and averages about 30 seconds to locate one in general. The screen resolution is easy to read and the options for customizing the map make it even easier if you have trouble reading small text. The waypoint markers are easy to define and edit. The compass seems to be very quick in picking up your movements. Almost everything is customizable giving you endless options for your specific use for the GPS unit. The unit is comfortable in the hand, although some of the buttons are a little stiff at first.
My satellite reception is excellent. I took it hiking in 40°F rain and hail (obviously very overcast) and only lost reception once while walking under heavy tree cover. On the way home I placed it on the dashboard and it tracked me 33 miles home without losing reception once. This was in 500 ft visibility fog on a one lane curvy mountain road. This unit definitely gets the job done.
My only gripes are there's no beep or sound when it loses reception and you have to press enter to acknowledge you have lost reception, thus it begins tracking you again. So if you hike by turning the unit on and placing it in your backpack, or even on your belt, you could have lost reception and not known it, and because you haven't acknowledged the unit, it's not tracking you anymore (as far as I can tell).
Other than that, this unit works perfect for getting you in and out of areas where there's no trails and finding that perfect spot to spend the night or fish and hunt.

This was a mild disappointment. It is the second Garmin product that fails me, I also owned a Pilot II, whose firmware at some point lost its marbles, and now it displays only some pages and refuses to get a GPS fix.
The Venture had, almost from the beginning, a problem with the display, which flickered and became alternatively all black or white, or lost some horizontal lines, creating a nice "blinds" effect.
The problem normally went away by moderate slapping. But it is not a nice start.
Second point: the battery contacts are sub-quality, you just need to shake the unit a little and the electrodes lose contact with the battery, causing the unit to switch off.
Third: when the memory is fairly full, the operating system goes in overload mode, sometimes it does not manage to acquire the user input, and you find yourself trying to use the buttons without actually managing to do nothing. Erase the memory and the problem disappears.
Four: a few leaves overhead and you lose the fix, the sensitivity and selectivity is not great.
Maybe I had a bad firmware, who knows, but I don't want to change my firmware every month, I expect the original firmware to be OK for a while.
I just bought a Magellan, I'm curious to see if it's better or worse.
