The Garmin eTrex Legend GPS receiver is modeled on Garmin's popular entry level eTrex, but adds the same base map found in Garmin's III+ and eMap models, along with 8 MB of memory, making it a solid midlevel offering in the eTrex line just behind the eTrex Summit. Housed in a translucent blue case, this powerful, 12-parallel-channel, global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver weighs only 5.3 ounces and measures 4.4 by 2 inches. It literally fits in the palm of your hand. The Legend boasts the ability to hold up to 8 MB of amazingly detailed information that you upload for the area you plan to navigate. In addition to all that detailed information at your fingertips, the Legend actually gives you a higher-resolution screen than the slightly better equipped eTrex Summit. The eTrex Legend's 8 MB memory enables you to download points of interest and map data from optional Garmin MapSource CD-ROMs to make your GPS unit more useful. The built-in base map of the Americas displays city and interstate highway information for North, South, and Central America, as well as U.S. highway exits. Address and business listings are displayed with data downloads. It also provides points of interest along lakes, rivers, and coastlines.
The Legend has a front-panel rocker switch that allows for quick and accurate map panning. View maps on a liquid crystal display with a resolution of 288 x 160 pixels. The unit is waterproof to an IPX7 standard, so it can withstand a dunk.
The Legend maintains a tight satellite lock, even in a forest. The unit can store up to 1,000 user waypoints with graphical icons, and it boasts Garmin's own TracBack feature, which reverses your track log and helps you navigate your way back home. Couldn't be easier to use.........2007-12-28
Don't understand the negative reviews on this unit. When I got it christmas morning, I pop'ed a couple of batteries in it, turned it on, and stuck it in my coat pocket. Did a bunch of driving, walking, etc... It followed my every move. It will initialize and find the satellites from INSIDE my house. I love it.
Great Unit But Not Perfect.......2007-12-21
Fantastic unit for hunting, hiking, Christmas tree searching, etc. We hike in the mountains and you can take waypoints as you hike then go to Google Earth and look up exactly where you were. Works the other way too. Input your waypoints and then tell the unit to navigate to it. Check the accuracy of your speedometer. Fun to use geocaching too.
There are things I don't like. It has the older chipset that loses signal easily. I have to put the unit on my dashboard because it loses signal in any seat of my car. I also wish it converted coordinates to decimal easily but it only uses standard GPS coordinates. I have to do a conversion each time from Google Earth's coordinates. There are some roadmaps but only major streets in most cities. Don't use this for address navigation because the maps are not very detailed. Wished it used a USB connection to a computer but it's using older serial port so many new laptops won't interface to it. Also, you have to move around for compass to work.

This has been one of the best purchases I have made.
I have put this unit to the test for over three years, as my GPSr for geocaching, on the handle bars of my touring and mountain bicycles, on the dashboard of my truck (with the 12 volt power cord) and interfaced to my computer, using Mapsource software, GSAK (geocaching Swiss army knife) via the "can't live without"Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter ( USA-19HS )!
The only bit of a problem I have encountered was with the rubber gasket coming loose, but fortunately for me I live within driving distance of Garmin headquarters and since my unit was still covered under warranty, the folks at Garmin replaced the unit and there has been no problems whatsoever thereafter.
I do highly recommend getting a transparent screen protectorUniversal Digital Camera LCD Screen Protectors for All Screen sizes up to 3.50" X 4.25" for the display and aGarmin Carrying Case for eTrex and Summit (010-10314-00) and aVehicle power adapter for 010-00190-00 and of course Mapsource software from the manufacturer.
I am hoping to get a Garmin GPSMap 76CSx Mapping Handheld GPSfor Christmas, but I will still be using the Legend on my bikes and as a backup for geocaching trips.
Of course this GPSr works fine with a PC (using the Keyspan adapter) but as far as I know will not "talk" to a MAC.

I would recommend this GPS for geocachers out there as a dependable hand held unit. If you want a car or truck GPS forget this product. It loses signal very easily inside anything, i.e. your vehicle. Outside with a clear view of the sky is no problem, even with overcast skies. Enjoy!

The Legend HCx connected to the satellites from inside the house, car and the metal shed as advertised. Accuracy excellent. Definite improvement to the Legend. You will need to buy a micro flash card. The price was enhanced by $30 off when approved for Amazon credit card. Two thumbs up all round.
Ok but..........2007-11-28
This is my 5th GPS unit, and my 4th Garmin, including etrex Legend, eMap, Legend C, and now the Legend HCx.
The Legend HCx is an ok GPS, but not currently good for hiking/backpacking. It has a bug in it that makes it inaccurate at sensing your speed when you walk less than about 2mph. While usually easy to walk faster than 2mph, when you're backpacking in the woods, it's often tough to average faster than that. The result is you can walk indefinitely at
<2mph and this GPS will record that you've been standing still the whole time. It's odometer, moving time, and stationary time records are all incorrect when you've been traveling under 2mph.
Mainly just a pain. It does consistently give your position accurately though, so it's primary purpose is fulfilled quite well.
I've spoken with Garmin and they say they're working on a firmware update to fix this, although no commitment date was given.

I am very pleased. I had an old GPS III plus, and this one is much faster, clearer, and easier to work with. Very happy with the total price being less than anywhere else.
Terrific Handheld Outdoor GPS Unit.......2007-10-18
This is the second mapping GPS I have owned, and it is nearly perfect for my needs. I can't believe how much better this eTrex Legend is than my old eMap unit. First, the bright color display is clear and readable in direct sunlight. My laptop wouldn't even be visible in those conditions. Battery life - there is no comparison! I haven't yet changed the alkaline batteries in 4 weeks of use (modestly heavy as it is a new toy). Finally, it is so sensitive that it has never failed to get a satellite position while indoors. Again, the HCx is a major improvement over the previous model where I could lose reception inside my car with glass all around and in open countryside.
Pros: Light weight, small size, fits great in one hand.
Can be operated completely with one hand.
Display is amongst the sharpest and brightest I have ever seen.
Very intuitive and simple to use for anyone except possibly a newbie to GPS navigation.
Battery life seems endless.
Ability to map a route to a destination address entered at the unit with the City Navigator software installed - the entire U.S. and Canada detailed road maps and POI fit on a single 1 GB micro-SD flash card.
Useful in your car or outdoors for hiking, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, motorcycling, etc.
A true all-in-one GPS solution for a low price.
Cons: Small display compared to Nuvi series and other non-outdoor GPS units.
No voice directions - it has two types of tones to alert you to pending and imminent turns.
You need to add $120 worth of City Navigator mapping software to enable the auto-routing by address or point of interest functions.
The click-stick 5-way joystick navigation device is not the easiest thing to use to move around the maps and menus.
Overall I am very happy with my purchase and I expect to get at least 5 or 6 years of good use from this before I will be looking at replacements. Garmin quality and service has been excellent in my opinion; my eMap still works, though it will likely be relegated to a desk drawer.
Best All Around GPS.......2007-09-16
Excellent and versatile GPS that I use for geocaching, driving, mountain biking, and hiking. I previously owned the Venture Cx and the display cracked due to my carelessness in the airline luggage. I upgraded to the new Legend HCx with the high sensitivity receiver and this unit significantly outperforms the older units. The new receiver fixes your location much faster and provides much better signal coverage. I noticed this as soon as I turned the Legend HCx on, as I was able to get a fix inside my house.
The expandable memory option (Cx) of the etrex series allows you to store a tremendous amount of map info. I installed the TOPO and City Navigator Mapsets for the entire state of CA and I am able to switch between mapsets. When I am on the trail, I "hide" the other mapsets and "show"/use the TOPO mapset. When driving on the road, I switch to City Navigator to get turn by turn navigation to my destination.
The only cons about the etrex series is that they have a small screen to view while driving and the menus/control button configuration are complex. I had to install my unit right on the steering column for driving. It took me awhile to learn and use all the features of the City Navigator and to switch between mapsets. But, for a pocket size all around GPS with excellent battery life, these are acceptable compromises.

You can use the Legend Cx's memory card slot with preprogrammed microSD cards from Garmin (sold separately) that provide topographic maps, city streets, and nautical charts. In fact, the unit is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products, including BlueChart, City Navigator, U.S. Topo 24K, and U.S. Topo and Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots. The unit comes preloaded with an Americas autoroute basemap that provides automatic routing capabilities, including highways, exits, and tide data. WOW Are we enjoying this product. I already own two Garmin GPS products and this is truly a LEGEND. It is very easy to use and the screen is just right. It pin points our position everytime so it is right up todate no matter where we are. We went to a remote area of Georgia hunting and we were able navigate easily. I truly recommend this product.

This is my first GPS device. I like it and use it everytime I go anywhere new. I like the ergonomics and ease of use, nothing really complicated, you can basically fire it up and start using it without even reading the directions. Keep in mind you will want more memory and Map software to go with it.

Excellent GPS.......2007-08-24
I was very surprised by the quality of this GPS. I bought it for a recent trip to England (had to send it to a friend in the USA and then here by UPS) and used the MetroGuide Europe 8 maps that I found online with a little trick that means them GPS routable. It worked great and got me to all the places (on foot) that I wanted to see. I did however have some qualms about it:
1. The autorouting doesn't distinguish good areas from bad, which can be a problem in London as you're happily following the directions in the late afternoon and suddenly find yourself in an council housing estate area full of hoodies staring at you. Nothing happened, but I felt very uncomfortable.
2. Whenever I told either MapSource or the GPS to find me a pedestrian route between (even nearby) cities it seemed to give up and told me to go on a motorway. Not being completely crazy, I took the bus instead and never noticed any pedestrian ways near motorways outside of cities. This remains a mystery. More so since it gives you the route like it were good instead of saying "sorry, can't do that."
Otherwise though, this is a really good GPS that performs better than I had expected.
Naive.......2007-07-29
I guess the picture of the unit with streets in the the image
made me suppose that is what you get. Apparently you do not. All you get is the main roads so once you zoom into your neighborhood you get a blank screen. To buy the street maps from Garmin cost $140 just for N. America. Looks like I should have just stuck with my laptop and Google maps. The Garmin web site is poor. I tried updating my software. Although I hit the update software it baulked because there were already files of the same name. Even after clicking "ok" the update box to extract the files never disappeared or changed to say it had correctly updated. I was left wondering if it had.

This was my first GPS. I did my homework and checked out the various features I was looking for. I'm very happy with this product and it has exceeded my expectations. Nice bright screen and good battery life.

I paid only $139 for a refurbished unit, complete with a full factory warrenty, and couldnt be happier!
Be advised that this is a discontinued unit, and the base map can not be changed, but it was always my intention to buy the current City Navigation maps, so the point (for me) is moot.
This WASS capable unit does everything the big boys do, at a faction of the price. Being water-proof and with proximity and off-anchor alarms, and Blue Chart compatable, it make a great marine unit as well.
You can import waypoints, POIs, Geocache chests, routes, and tracks thru the fast USB port.
I also can get over 45 hours of battery life with lithium batteries.
My only concern, is that the memory is built in, and can not be increased, but with each detail map being about 5 megs, you can enough data to get you just about anywhere.

I am comparing this to my old etrex Venture. This is not a mapping grade GPS, meaning that there is no NMEA output. Typically, this does not mean a dang thing to the typical user. If you are a bicycling, hiker, fisherman,hunter, then this will be a great choice. The display is easy to read. Right now I am sitting in my house with the unit plugged into the computer (which uses the computers battery source) and I have 6 satellites. There was no way I could have used the older models indoors. In other words, the satellite reception is great. For the money, it may be worth choosing a different model, as this one is now discontinued. Makes me wonder if that is a sign from Garmin??

This GPS is amazing. I recieved it as a Chrismas present several years ago. I primarly use it when driving in the car. After using it for a while and researching the mapsource software I decided to buy it. This software is worth the $$. The software lets you download maps. With the maps you have dl'ed to the gps you can search for intersections, addresses, parks..you name it. One really cool feature is you can search for a business by name get driving directions to their location and their telephone number so you can call ahead (say to order takeout). The software ads another dimension to the versatility of this unit.
The only downside is no expandable memory. This is a bit of a dated version. Newer versions come with micro-sd slots. The bigger the sd card the more maps/info you can cram into this pocket sized travel guide.
For the legend c shop around I paid $180 for mine.

Fantastic on longer trips or for use at night.......2007-12-15
I took a six hour road trip last summer and this device was fantastic in that I was able to use the backlight on my Garmin all the way and never had to worry about running down the batteries. I also use it at night when a backlight is pretty much essential. It conveniently plugs into the USB plug on the unit, and works fine with my dashboard mount. Yes, it is expensive, but I told a friend I would get him one for his Garmin as he was going to try and rig up one homemade in the hopes of saving some money. I thought that a car fire or toasting his Garmin is not worth the meager savings, or the risk that his homemade rig could go terribly wrong, so he will have a proper power source for his Garmin this Christmas.
I took one star away because I do think it should have been priced less for what it does.
WAY OVERPRICED.......2007-10-09
No matter how much I want continuous power to my Garmin I just can't pay that much for a little power cable that costs probably $1 to make. It's the principle of it.
Instead I did some research and discovered a nifty little item called a USB car adapter for as low as two dollars! - then I can just use the USB cord that came with the unit! Only the wires needed for supplying power are used and not those for the data (they are separate wires in the cord). For more info do a search on Wikipedia for USB, and Goggle and right here at Amazon for USB car chargers.
I found a great dual charging unit elsewhere for $15 including shipping. With the dual unit I can charge my eTrex Vista HCx and phone or PDA, both at the same time. Just make sure the power output is 4.75 to 5.25V, that's the USB power specification. All but one of the units I found where in the proper power range though one was 7.2V, which is too high.
BTW, the little connector at the eTrex is also a USB connecter, just a different type (shape) then you may be used to. They call it a `mini USB,' while the larger one on the other end (of the cord that came with the unit) is a `USB type A', the same you typically see for computers and flash cards. It doesn't matter though, they are just differently shaped connectors that do exactly the same thing.
Don't pay Garmin's outrageous prices. Get a USB car adapter and power your eTrex through the USB cord supplied with your unit. It's the same as when you plug your unit into your computer's USB port and the computer supplies the unit with 5V power. Enjoy

Cable delivers power (as one would expect a power cable to do). No particular "features" to note other than the cable length seems to be quite ample to reach from the lighter socket to the device.
Garmin Power Cable for Etrex Vista C........2007-06-27
The Etrex Vista C uses a USB port connection to the computer, and the power cable matches the GPS end of the cable. It functions well, supplying power as needed. However, the cable attaches at 90 degrees to the back of the unit. Thus, the GPS cannot lie flat on the dashboard, in contrast with the previous Etrex Vista model.
The user must either buy the Garmin window mount, or come up with a way to hold the GPS unit off the dashoard. I use a dry kitchen sponge wrapped with a strip of rubberized drawer liner. I would have preferred the cable enter the GPS unit parallel with the back.
Works great with the Garmin GPS.......2007-05-14
This adapter works great with the eTrex... It allows you to set the display lighting on all the time while driving... A big plus for visibility. And it saves on batteries.
The only negative I've found so far is that the USB connector fits my blackberry, so I thought I could charge it with this cable. This power adapter must have some curcuitry to detect the load being drawn, though. When my blackberry's power level is low, the power cable switches off every time I plug the phone in to get recharged.
Overall, no problems using it with the eTrex.

Amazing Sensitivity.......2007-10-11
I've had my Legend HCx for about a week now. I upgraded from a standard eTrex Legend. It has amazing sensitivity for receiving signals. I can pick up 5 or so satellites inside my house and track my movements from room to room!
Functionality wise, it's about the same as the model I replaced. I did add a 1 gig flash card and plan to pick up the topo dvd's from garmin shortly. This unit rocks! Don't hesitate to purchase it!
Finest Upgrade Available from Garmin.......2007-09-04
I won't waste your time if you are a previous Garmin user. I upgraded from an EMap, bought in 2001, that has served quite well. However, after all that time there are features one desires that scream for an upgrade. Yes, the color screen, the USB capability, far larger (and commercially available) Micro SD Memory, improved maps all contribute to the many reasons to buy.. This is the tops, absolutely.
However, I saw this was coming out about 6 months ago and I waited. Why? The "H" in "HCx" stands for high-sensitivity. From my EMap experiences, I knew that GPS units were very sensitive to signal. My old EMap literally had to sit on the dashboard of the car on road trips, sitting in the sun, and sometimes still losing satellites. Well, friend, that's all over.
My HCx arrived today, and I opened the box, securing two AA batteries, and turned the unit on after about 45 seconds of perusing the Quick Start Guide. Sitting in a concrete building (dormitory, with a steel door, the HCx immediately began acquiring satellites and within mere seconds had found three...inside my little "bunker". Impressed? You couldn't wipe the grin off my face. I set a waypoint for Home - in the room - and then trudged over to work. Entering another concrete building, the signal strength was still fine and I set a waypoint at my desk. I marveled over the `track" I had wandered on the way to work, zooming in to 20 ft. resolution.
Friends, this is fantastic technology. The unit is small, comfortable to operate, feels solid, well-actuated controls and is far faster to acquire satellites than my expectations. Needless to say, it's worth every penny. It fits in my shirt pocket, not a great deal larger than a pack of cigarettes, and it is the best thing I've spent money one since the thrill of buying a VIC-20 PC at K-Mart in 1985. And a lot of technology has been issued (and passed through my hands) since then. I admit it - I'm geek - I carry daily 3 phones, a digital camera and a Space Pen.
Buy this unit. Amazon's price is current market price, so don't feel compelled to shop - I did and it was a huge headache to attempt to save $20. Your time is worth far more - don't delay another day. Hands-down, it is the one to buy, and you will be on cutting edge for several more years.
You will not be disappointed.

We bought this for fun and it is. Moderately user friendly it is good for geocaching, but not very useful as a general GPS devise.
