My mom and I have had our Targus's about a year now, and they're still very effective in cooling off our Mac laptops, but after about 10 months, we both noticed that they got a little louder than they had been originally - which still isn't super loud. They're just not as inconspicuous as they once were, and we can definitely hear the whir of the fan as it is still cooling the computer, thereby extending it's life.

I had been using this for many years before I discovered the Allsop Metal Art Laptop Stand. The CoolPad is great. The swivel feature is handy. But when I upgraded to a larger laptop (Dell Inspiron 9400), it was too small. The little bar doesn't help that much.
I tried several products until I discovered the Allsop. The CoolPad is still a great product and probably better for smaller laptops. It;s also more portable. I used to take it with me everywhere.
Both are good at keeping the laptop cooler. This is supposed to greatly increase battery life.

This is cheap. And that is the quailty you get. I do wish the fans were not so centered, but it did keep my laptop signifintally cooler, but after 4 months the wires came out of the swtich and one of the blades on the fan broke so i only have one working fan. but, for the price, this is what you get.

The Podium Coolpad is a fanless solution that helps cool the laptop simply by raising it up in back (and a little in front), and also provides a swivel function. Height is adjusted using Lego-like stacking column pieces (which can go missing all too easily, according to *actual* reviews of the Podium Coolpad).
The Chillpad uses fans powered by the laptop through its USB connection. According to reviews you can read here, it has a lot of problems with power switches and fans failing.
Until the review assignment error gets resolved, if you read a complaint about a switch or a fan or a USB port--it's about the Chillpad, *not* the Podium Coolpad!

I purchased one of these fans over the summer. It's incredibly loud, but I could handle that. Unfortunately, it completely died after a little over a month of use - wouldn't even turn on. I'll definitely be looking for another brand next summer.

This little fan has incredible power for its size. With 3 adjustable speed choices, I usually use it on the slowest speed, as it has more than enough blast for my needs. It also articulates up at down so you can point it at any angle, and it's only about a foot tall, so it's perfect for small spaces, such as under a desk. I would have gladly paid double for this little beauty. I've gone through a number of other small fans and this one is by far the best one of them all.

I got one at Target during the summer. Throw out that old fashion box fan, this is a turbo design and more power to it. It is loud at the highest setting but much quieter at med and lo settings. I've brought it along hiking trips and it has lived up to expectations -- durable construction, easy to carry, and clear optics. This is a thin, tall squirrel fan. It moves a lot of air, is quiet, and can be set to oscillate (moves back and forth).
The remote is very handy. I have mine set up over in the corner of the room and I put the remote on my desk when I'm using it. When I'm not, it stores neatly on top of the fan and clicks into place so it won't fall off and get lost.
I use it to get some of the hot air that my computer generates out of the room. It works very well.
Looks nice too! The black with chrome accents is very stylish while blending into the overall room.

This fan is pretty quiet and pretty efficient in blowing a nice breeze. My only concern is that the fan does not always respond to the remote. It could simply be a glitch with my machine but when I press the remote for operation, the red fan light blinks but no other response. The fan speed and oscillation don't change every time I push the button on the remote. Sometimes I have to push it repeatedly. Outside of those concerns, it is a pretty nice, fashionable fan.

I am using my cooler with my old HP notebook, which used to activate it's fans all the time and nevertheless was always kind of hot.
Now with the cooler it activates the fans, but not all the time, so it has improved and allows me to work quietly, by staying cold.
The only thing I would ask to be improved about the cooler is that the fans could be a little more powerfull. Also, the cooler is not portable, because it's a little heavy.

I have 2 of the smaller NotePals for my 15" screen laptop - one at work, and the other at home, which do WONDERFUL work keeping my laptop cool. So I was anxious to get the wider version for the new 17" laptop, and I find that the 17" model is similarly narrow - the laptops hang over the back edge by about 2 inches. Therefore the back support on all the laptops actually rest on the case, not on the laptop's rubber feet. It doesn't seem to hurt anything. I'd rather the aluminum extrusions be deeper so that the laptops rest fully on the cooler. Given the front lip of the cooler is about the same depth as the laptop overhang in back, I'm guessing the intent was to be able to also fit the cooler in a laptop bag. This is not a feature I desire, but one some people may. The design is excellent, very sturdy, and the workmanship top notch. I have both the silver and black now - the black is a bit prettier, but the aluminum is very professional looking, too.
Stays cool but falls short.......2007-12-31
On the pros side it does its job and keeps the laptop cool and runs so quietly I wasn't even sure it was on at first.
Now for the cons, its isn't deep enough for a 17" widescreen laptop (as another viewer shows above), so I balance my laptop on the front lip (which also allows me to use my headphone jack on the front of my laptop and provides a bit more stability.
Sadly when it comes to 17" widescreen coolers this is about your only choice for now.

Let me tell you, this certainly cools my laptop very well. I have a customized 17" HP notebook computer. It has 4gb of ram, a high powered graphics card, and several other specs that get very warm. The stickers on the bottom of my laptop were actually singed from the heat my laptop generated.
This cooler has been perfect by dropping my computer down over 12 degrees and preventing it from potentially overheating. It sitts very well in my lap and is very light weight. All round a great product.
Some minor issue I personally have is that my HP DV9000Z (17") is too deep. So, what I mean is it is not too long, it is not too wide, it is the depth going from front to back. It hangs off of the back of the cooler. So, if one is not careful it could be easily tipped off the back. Also, the USB cable that comes with it is too short. It could easily be another 6 inches longer.
A 4 out of 5 is appropriate, it does what it is meant to, just some minor "bugs".

i have a 17 inch HP Pavillion and the cooler does the job for me. Cools the computer and elevates it, so when i am typing a long essay it relieves stress off my wrists. But this cooler is clearly for desk use, meaning, dont put it on your lap. obviously its made of metal with sharp corners on the bottom, therefore its not very comfortable to place on your lap. the only real issue i have is that my laptop has the headphone jacks in the front, so when i plug in my speakers i have to rest it above the little hidge thing , other then that no big issues. better then the other coolers i have purchased before.

I took a chance on this fan for my Xbox 360 and PS3. It could not have worked out better. Being USB the fans power on and off with the consoles. The variable speed option is great for noise level control.

It helps to cool my 8800gts 640 and also my core2quad 2.4. My computer is in a small box that gets locked every night, so i had to buy a fan. Its easy to drill some holes and buy some long screws so that i can mount this fan directly over one of the holes of the box. It keeps the whole box ice cold even when running with the doors closed. I overclock my 8800 to 700mhz and it keeps it at a steady 85-90 deg. C. Buy this product.

I wanted to see for myself the difference, both came with good reviews.
Both are nice and work well, only the Belkin one is a better FANning system. It produces more air and a better air flow.
I gave my item away and have since ordered the Belkin for myself as well.
It depends how much cooling you need / how often you use your computer...

I bought this because my lap would get uncomfortably warm after using the computer for a while. This cooling pad solved the problem. It works, but don't expect too much. It has three fans in a plastic case that suck air out from under your laptop and exausts it away from you. It's sized for a 15 inch computer, and while it works for a 17 inch the fit is off. It's quite, I don't notice the sound. The computer runs much cooler now.

Unlike other reviews here I actually recommend the manual. It is a very funny read, like something from the movie Brazil. The fan itself worked great longer than most fans do these days. Right now it is on its last legs: needs a push on the blades to get them turning and can't remain running on anything but the highest power. That said, it's lasted 2 years; longer than more expensive fans that have come and gone through this house, er, like the wind.
Power was and is pretty good, and the remote control features are great. There's even a mystery button that is for "testing purposes." I hope that button is still there.
I might buy this one again when its predecessor finally dies.
Noisy and badly designed.......2007-12-14
I should've realized that you get what you pay for. This fan was comparatively inexpensive, and really not worth much. First of all, the fan blade was unbalanced, so on the 2 lower speeds, the wobbly fan action was really loud. At the highest speed, it was less wobbly, but at night that's too much air. Secondly, the height adjustment control was badly designed and just plain didn't work: while assembling the fan, the first time you try to use the height knob, the threads on the screw will get stripped. The manufacturer actually knows this, so has included a second one -- THAT one is sturdier, but it turns out it STILL doesn't function due to poor design. Therefore the fan can't be raised to the normal height of a floor fan -- it's too short.
I'll be sending this turkey back.

As others have mentioned in prior reviews, the instructions are about as clear as mud. I would also agree that the bolts included to secure the fan to the base are a tad bit on the short side. However, they go in fairly easy if you can get them started. Also, that nice white plastic piece on the base is somewhat difficult to snap in place. Even once it is in place, one does not feel very confident that it will STAY in place. The fan housing also left a similar feeling of "not-quite-togetherness".
Despite the issues I experienced setting up the fan, and its less than spectacular fit and finish, this product has performed flawlessly eight-plus hours a night, every night for the past several weeks. I would say the price on this one is just about right and is certainly worth the money.
Cost Savings Fan.......2007-11-13
I had read the reviews but I ordered it anyway. The fan is quiet, so that's a plus. The manual is almost useless so I assembled it without the manual. I did buy 1-inch long bolts to fasten the base. I had to loosen a large screw in order to tip the fan blade housing. Attaching the blade housing unit (over the blade) was a chore because they provide only one screw. So I had to use a large screw driver to tip the housing into the track. (How much did they save by eliminating metal retainer clips?)
It does have a remote. I wonder how long this unit will last?

Everything about the 'working' of this fan is fantastic!! I particularly LOVE the remote control. The only reason that I wouldn't give it 5 stars is for the same reason that others have stated......putting it together is crazy. The directions are less than adequate and thankfully, after reading the other reviews, I knew that I would need to go to the hardware store and purchase longer screws. I did and was then able to finish putting the fan together. That was a nuisance - but other than that....I love the fan! It is no louder than any other fan would be, and I have it at the foot of my bed blowing directly on me and have no trouble sleeping with the sound.

Pros:
I like the light color.
It's light weight makes it easy to move around.
Can tilt upwards up to 90 degrees.
Airflow is good for it's size.
Nice size base for stability.
Cons:
Much louder than I expected, even on low, with the fan near (which you need if you want to feel cooler). I am somewhat sensitive to noise and sound, YMMV.
Doesn't tilt down, so you have to prop up the back a little for that effect.
Airflow is still not as strong as I would like, I guess I'll have to get a larger fan.
Improvement Suggestions:
It would be helpful if the grill came apart for cleaning.
It would be nice if the cord was 1'-2' longer, and could neatly wrap around the base for storage.
Note:
Though I buy many things through Amazon, I needed a fan right away, and I was able to find it at Target, and for a little bit better price.
Bottom Line:
If you are looking for an inexpensive, small, lightweight fan, and don't need one that is "whisper quiet", then you will probably be happy with this one.

I bought this fan in the summer of '05 and it turned out to be great. It still works wonders with its amazing power, but this year I took it out of my closet and there was dust all over it. I tried to clean inside but the screw are so weird looking I don't have a tool to take them out. I recommmend gettin at least the black on so dust won't show or just getting another fan if you would keep it in a closet with dust.

Great Card for Older Games.......2007-11-30
I configured this card with a system in April 2007. It's a great card for games that came out two years or so ago and older. Far Cry, for instance, runs smoothly at high settings but jitters a bit at maximum settings. The same can be said for Age of Empires III and Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault. I can run Unreal Tournament 2003 and No One Lives Forever II at maximum settings with pefectly smooth gameplay.
The latest games really could use a better card than this one. Crysis, Bioshock, and Unreal Tournament III run decently and are playable, but the graphics jitter a lot and don't look nearly as good as 2007 graphics might.
My verdict is that unless you MUST play the latest games at high settings with smooth gameplay, then this card is very good. For the price, it's an excellent value. But if you want a good card for the latest games, then definately pass on this card.

You'll want to download the latest drivers from nVidia's web site. This isn't the fastest GPU, but with 512MB I think this card packs the best performance for the price. The ability to run 2 monitors is also a plus.
