Trip Planning with Door-to-Door Convenience
Streets and Trips 2006 is an easy-to-use, hands-free trip planning and guidance solution. Whether you're running errands or planning a cross-country road trip, Streets and Trips 2006 offers customizable maps and information on more than 1.8 million points of interest (POIs), such as restaurants, ATMs, museums, campgrounds and more. Online or off, Streets and Trips 2006 provides updated maps that give you accurate, detailed door to door directions and puts 5.9 million miles of routable roads and highways throughout the US and Canada at your fingertips. While you're driving, verbal turn-by-turn directions let you concentrate on the road while the software guides you. Customizable trip planning features allow you to plan multiple stops, find nearby places to visit, calculate drive time, and more.

Taking advantage of the enhanced trip planning software is easy. To create a route and generate directions, you simply type in the starting and ending locations and click on "Get Directions." It's that simple. Your trips can include multiple segments, and you can instruct the software to customize your route by telling it what types of roads you want to travel, how much gas your car has, and the general area where you want to stop to gas up. Streets and Trips 2006 will do the rest, giving you your optimal itinerary, down to the precise gas station. Overall you'll have access to over 1.8 million local POIs such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations and ATMs, and by planning ahead, Streets and Trips 2006 will help you avoid delays with construction updates and other recent changes to your route.

Microsoft's "Locate Me" technology uses Wi-Fi hotspots to pinpoint your location, so you'll know precisely where you are as you're traveling. If you drive past your planned exit, a single click will get you back on track. The "Re-route from Here" feature quickly recalculates directions if you miss a turn.

To find a certain POI, such as a restaurant or gas station, you simply select from 35 POI types to display on the map. You have the option of searching within a certain radius of an address that you choose, your current location, a specific direction within a planned route, or all of the POIs along the entire route. Your results are displayed in a directory-tree listing. When you click on a POI, a balloon box pops up on the map with detailed information, including an address and phone number, and if you right-click on the POI icon, you can add it to your route list.

MSN Virtual Earth and Other Extras
To enhance to your travel experience, Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 offers a link to MSN Virtual Earth, Microsoft's online repository of satellite maps. Let's say you're viewing a map of the theater district in Manhattan. If you want to see a bird's-eye view of it, just click the Virtual Earth icon and a satellite image of the area will load into your browser. Another convenient feature is the "Night Map Style" which makes reading your routes at night or in other low-light conditions a breeze. The map's background is black, and roads and street names are shown in shades of green for easy viewing. Also included with Streets and Trips 2006 is Pocket Streets for your Pocket PC or Smartphone, which you can load onto your compatible Windows-based Pocket PC or Windows-powered Smartphone for greater travel convenience.

And best of all, once you register your software, you can access a full year of email and toll-free customer support, and you'll also have access to an online knowledge base dedicated to Streets and Trips 2006. So no matter where you're travels are taking you, you can drive with the confidence that you'll have Microsoft's extensive support and software behind you every click of your odometer.

4 out of 5 stars I bought this just for the GPS.......2007-10-06

The USB GPS unit works great. It also works in Microsoft MapPoint (NA and European versions). The 2006 version of S&T now provides voice guidance which lets you set up your laptop in the front seat before your trip, pop the GPS in the front window and let it give you guidance hands free while driving.

3 out of 5 stars Aggravating.......2007-06-07

Save your money and buy the Garmin Nuvi 350. MSST 2007 has managed to let me dwon, again. or rather it is MS. My BIGGEST complaint among many (and I will spare everyone)is the inability to take my planning as I set it up in route planning. It overrides my coices I add and reroutes me. VERY aggravating as the direction they give me is NOT the correct way! Another complaint is why should everyone have to buy a new version EVERY year. We should have the ability for a small fee to obtain updates, product maintenance and ACCURATE directions. My neighborhood isn't even on the map yet and we have been here 3 years!

5 out of 5 stars Better than any other mapping program........2007-05-25

Great for finding anything. Where the others are wrong, this is right on.

4 out of 5 stars Lacking.......2007-03-07

Needs full screen mode, especially for those of us who have smaller displays... This is fixed in 2007 edition, so I recommend getting that one rather than this one... Other than that, this product is awesome... Easy to use, and works great with the GPS receiver that comes with it (optional)...

5 out of 5 stars how do they do it ?.......2007-01-12

having the whole country right at my finger tips has been really usefull. very east to install right on your hard drive. i use it often. again how do they get all those roads on that little disc.

Taking advantage of the enhanced trip planning software is easy. With a customizable viewing pane, you can display turn-by-turn directions, including street names, in large type for easy viewing, and large, easy-to-see arrows that indicate the direction of your next turn. The pane displays the distance to your destination in miles or yards, and for a quick "at-a-glance" view, a thermometer-style bar shows the relative distance you've travelled. With the GPS receiver plugged into your laptop, you'll always know exactly where you are. The GPS panel shows your current latitude/longitude, direction of travel, current speed, and GPS signal strength. This is also the control panel for arranging and customizing the map display, and you can even create a "bread crumb" GPS trail, making your return trip a breeze. Voice-prompted directions announce upcoming turns with precise instructions, such as, "In one point two miles, turn left on Andover Street." If you drive past your planned exit, the software will tell you immediately that you're off track. A single click will get you back on track. The "Re-route from Here" feature quickly recalculates directions if you miss a turn.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very nice program ..........2007-11-22

Purchased this program for my older laptop PC because it was compatible with Win2000. Program worked right out of the box, no troubles installing. Has very nice features, easy to read on the screen. Now if I just could afford to drive my car anywhere ... :)

4 out of 5 stars It works.......2007-11-10

It works, it is a tad akward to use and would be much more conveniant if you could upgrade it rather than just buy a new one every few years

5 out of 5 stars got me from California to Florida straight out of the box.......2007-10-31

Bought this to help me on a 1700 mile cross country drive while moving house. Did just what was required, and made for stress free navigation. Only slight criticism, it would be nice to be able to change the brightness of output. I found during night driving that I had to switch on the screen save to keep my night vision.

I bought the 2006 version as it was a lot cheaper than the 2008 version. I realized up from that the maps might be out of date, but this was no issue for me during the trip.

3 out of 5 stars Behind the times but it has a niche for "techies".......2007-09-28

It is very annoying when you make a wrong turn. It will just keep repeating "off route". It does not recalculate unless you force it to.

Because of danger of theft, you have to hide the laptop computer every time that you stop. There are a few too many cords with laptop charger and GPS sensor cords strung around the car.

I like the built in options for distance, mileage, nearby attractions and large screen. I will use the vehicles built in navigation to get me to my distination, but I will use Streets and Trips to locate any nearby attractions. It is nice to be able to plan my trip on my home computer and then transfer the information to the laptop for travel.

It does have a lot of roads that are not on most other GPS guides. I like the simplicity of choosing a route and being able to send that route to other people over the internet. It does give GPS coordinates and elevation. If you are a tech oriented person then this might be for you. If you like hands free, then a voice operated system is probably a better choice. This is an inexpensive alternative to the expensive navigation systems if you have a laptop computer.

3 out of 5 stars Should be better than Google but isn't...........2007-07-08

I bought this a while ago and found it useful as a laptop GPS but as a route planner I found it to be lacking. First off, it is not as intuitive as when I try to do directions on Google Maps.

For instance, when I have pushpins set on a map, I should be able to simply right-click and select another pinpoint as a destination. Or at the very least click and drag one pushpin to another to get directions. Instead if you drag a pushpin, it gets move yet still retains the address of its original position!!! Even thought it's obviously a different location. I can't for the life of me figure out why they would even allow dragging if the information isn't going to be updated. That type of drag serves no useful purpose whatsoever.

It kind of shocks me that the biggest software company on the planet can't figure out how to make things intuitive. You would think they'd have the best product out there. But they don't. Streets and Trips is useful for getting a map when you don't have an internet connection but if you do, it's easier to make a map from Google and print it to PDF which you can have onscreen while you're driving.

With GPS it's pretty good for navigation but that's it.
