I purchased this item as a Christmas gift for my husband. We recently moved to a new state and my husband was getting a little turned around. He loves the Magellan Maestro. He told me that it was easy to install and easy to use. He also told me that he would never be lost again.

First of all, map and firmware updates ARE available via the Magellan website - other reviewers have gotten this wrong. The 3100 is ready to go right out of the box, has a sensitive receiver, and ALL of its menus and features are intuitive. The display and maps are simple, yet clear, easy to work with quickly, and purposeful. There is no mess and using the unit doesn't require much toil and handling. Reroutes are fast, and instructions and tones are kept to a peaceful minimum.
One negative is that the unit comes with a car charger only, and does not charge via the USB port.

My wife caught this for a very good price. Even at the price tage of 150 bucks you can't go wrong. Download the update as soon as you get it and your set. I saw some people say it was short on the POI's and the update takes forever. It took less than an hour to get it from computer to gps. The added POI's and added items are fantastic. I don't think there is a better bang for the buck than this lil gem.

This is my first GPS. It seems to be OK so far, but I need to do the estimated 11 hour update. There are many POI that are not showing (ie gas stations and resturants). The price was great, but I hope I didn't sacrafice information just to save some money.

A good GPS to have.......2008-01-01
I bought mine just before the christmas and even paid charges for the 2 day shipping as i wanted to have it before christmas. Anyways i tested the unit by taking it to a place i had never been to before and i must say it performed admirably.
The only drawback that i have seen till date is the text to speech feature doesn't always speak the names of the street or the Hwys. I did play around a bit with the settings when i received it so am not sure if it is a setting that i messed up or the unit itself has an issue.But initially it did speak a few street names but not all of them that it wanted to take me on.

So easy to use. I would definitely get the optional mount with it. We use it in 3 vehicles and we are impressed with the accuracy. Locally, we know shortcuts and it makes the adjustments very well. Fingerprints are our greatest problem.

What to buy my spouse? We're pretty plain people, trying to get our last child safely off to college and pretty much think we have everything important in life. But my love still likes gifts! I tend to be practical and somewhat like buying things that I might like to use but am too proud to buy for myself.
Still, no frills required but darn, it took hours of studying to find the right model after deciding what to buy! So-o-o I bought the Garmin 340. Unlike last year's iPod Nano (aforementioned child uses it for the parent) this baby was hooked up and ready to go instantly! A 600 mile trip later, I've been declared brilliant!
Didn't need the MP3, FM, traffic-stuff ----just plain, easy to read, intuitive, speaks to you device ---- and gets away with telling you where to go! Okay, so it only tells you how to get there.

Tom Tom One XL like it better than my bmw 550i built in NAV.......2008-01-02
I have this setup with the extended arm in my wife's mercedes 2007 C230, and WoW! only took me about 5 minutes to learn how to use it compared to my 2007 Bmw 550I gps which may look superior but is difficult to use. I like this Tom Tom One XL interface way better. I highly recommend it to anyone that just wants a simple easy to use GPS, well worth the money.
Beginner friendly.......2008-01-01
It's a great GPS for beginners. I first used it to go from New york city to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It brought me to an exit which has construction going on and it did not know and just shows UNNAMED ROAD. So I got lost for a bit. Once I went to a small street it recalculated and gave me so much turns to reach my final destination. I turned it off and did it again and it gave me another way, a better way. I think it was part my fault coz I accidentally entered yes when it was asking if I want to skip tolls. But, feel confident because no matter where it instructs you to go, you are going to reach your destination, only longer if you don't know alternative ways to do so.
Good But Not Great...........2007-12-31
I have this and used side by side with a Garmin 200 W for several weeks before returning the Garmin. Overall this is a good product but a few annoying bugs keep it from being great...here are the pros and cons
Pros
It finds the satellites quickly and keeps the signal. The garmin took 2-3 minutes almost every time from a power up start (this was the deal killer)
The user interface is nicer and has a lot more options than the garmin.
The POI database (such as the POI categories it actually has - it is missing several major US retail chains - see below) is more up to date than the Garmin I bought at same time.
Allows you to set the keyboard to QWERTY mode which the Garmin did not.

The graphics are a bit grainy compared to the garmin
The bluetooth is useless, works only for data transmission/reception and that too with very limited number of phones. No, you cannot use it as a handsfree.
If you take a wrong turn or pass by your destination or do anything to pass by your destination on a 2 lane road, it will not tell you to turn around - it will navigate you through the next set of intersections. In rural areas this can mean a 20 mile trip instead of going back 200 yards.
The text to speech works very unpredictably - it pronounces some name very nicely but mangles others horribly such that you can't recogonize it.
Also it announces street names about a quarter mile before and then simply says turn left or right when you are actually at an intersection and want the street name to turn into. This is annoying. Very annoying.
There is an SD card slot. However the unit works either exclusively with the SD card slot or with the internal memory. Which means that you have to reload everything in internal memory onto the SD card which takes about an hour because of the incredibly s-l-o-w data transfer rates.
Also the internal memory is pretty much full so forget about any upgrades unless you spring for at least a 2 GB or more SD card
Strangely, TomTom doesn't know about major US retail chains like Toys R Us, Payless Shoes etc. This even after I updated the unit with the US Retail POI database file
The color schemes available on the unit and online are completely weird. Seems to have been done by people with zero taste and sensiblity.
The internal battery is useless in cold weather (i.e. if you leave the unit in the car in winter). This after a few weeks. It either dies in a few minutes or doesn't fire up at all. Will have to see how it performs in the summer.
The brightness and contrast are so-so in daylight compared to the garmin 200 w
Easy to use for mom & dad!.......2007-12-31
Purchased the Tom Tom One XL-S for 70 year old parents. We needed something EASY to use and large enough for them to see. We took it on a 460 mile test run and it worked very well and was easy to use. The only problem we had was in trying to find a post office in rural South Carolina...it kept leading us to intersections with no post office. It was good at finding restaurants and gas stations, however, which is what they will be using it for. The ETA was reasonably accurate, we always beat it but it may not have taken into account the different speed limit in different states.
Buggy Maps and Not Really Mac Compatible.......2007-12-30
On a trip to one of the built-in Points of Interest (The NY Hall of Science), my Tomtom XL-S told me to go in the wrong direction through a one way loop in the front of the museum. Then it told me to connect to the highway by going through the paid parking lot at the museum. My wife was onboard with the TomTom until that happened. Now she's back to paper street maps.
So I tried to fix the maps by downloading the latest ones. The package comes with a code for a free download of the latest maps if done within 30 days of first using the unit. Guess what? The link on the coupon now directs me to download TomTom Home 2.0 in order to update the maps. The problem is, there is no Mac version of 2.0. So there are no updates for me. Why advertise about Mac compatibility and then lie about it?
One last thing. On the TomTom website, the pulldown help menu does not list the TomTom XL-S model at all.

I bought this for my self for Christmas. The large screen is nice. Entering destination points is easy but it took me a few minutes to fiqure out how it wanted the data entered. (Street name first then then street number) It has a tremendous amount of menue options but the one thing I have not been able to find is a way to cancel navigation. That would be very helpful if you change your mind because it will keep trying to direct you to that destination.

The extra width was worth the extra dollars and the enhanced 3d effect is an improvement over the older TomTom One I own. If you need to hear the name of the street to turn on versus being told the distance to the next turn, then you will have to pay extra for the "text-to-speech" model. I personally don't have a problem reading the name of the street to turn onto from the bottom of the display.

I received a TomTom XL for Christmas. I love the size of the screen, and the easy out of the box setup. The navigation is simple to read and I like the turn by turn instructions.
Here's what I'd like see to improve the unit.

This street pilot is awesome!! It is easy to use, the voice prompts are great and given earily enough that you can make a lane change in the worst of traffic if need be. I drive in Milwaukee Wi during rush hour traffic and am not very framiliar with the roads and this gadget has been a life saver for me with my new job. I highly recommend it especially if you are not great with electronic gadgets as I am not.

Good price, and excellent delivery. I chose this model due to it's price point (cheaper than the Nuvi)and Garmin reputation for reliability. So far so good. I am glad I got the "better" receiver, but do wish I had gotten the Text to speech (I.E. says the street names, not just "turn left"). The data base isn't quite up to speed (no record of the Atlanta Aquarium...one of the largest in the country?), but I'm hopeful I can update it online. Otherwise, good buy, and no surprises.

I haven't had to the opportunity to utilize the Garmin C530 much but playing with it seems easy enough to use. I have been using it around town and it seems to want to keep putting me on the highway instead of surface streets. Also had to buy updates seperately for maps. If I were to purchase another GPS unit I would go with the Navigon 5100 because it appears to have more features for the same amount of money'

I did a lot of research before buying this. I didn't want to be a sheep getting Garmin just because it's popular. However, after exhaustive looking around at other brands, reading review after review, I chose the C550 because it was the least expensive GPS of quality that has bluetooth, which allows you to make hands-free calls through the unit if you wirelessly connect to a bluetooth enabled cell phone. You can then call all of the points of interest in its vast system as well as all of your own contacts that are in your cell phone listings.
I also realized that I rented a car last year and also rented a GPS unit, and it was an earlier model of the same general type, probably a 330. Anyway, my experience with that was so favorable, that I knew I'd like this one also. You see, that rental was in Santa Fe, and if you know the streets of Santa Fe, you know that it would be hard to find a more challenging place to drive around. Tons of one way streets, small, short, out of the way streets, etc. The Garmin I had then never failed to find anything I put in, and made our trip SOOOOO much easier than it would have been without it.
Anyway, I bought the C550 and operation was as easy as I recalled. I just plugged it into the car and it was ready to go. It "found" my bluetooth enabled RAZR phone in a few seconds and within seconds, I was talking to people on the phone through the unit, and they said they could hear me, and I could hear them loud and clear.
Now I can't wait to find all of the shorter routes I know I will find to places of interest. I was also glad that the unit came with an adhesive disk to mount the unit on the dash. My recollection about the suction cup on the window deal is that it can fall off. (However, if you have a GPS and only use windsheild mount, the trick is to wet the suction cup a bit before sticking it on, and then it will stay like a charm. I, however, use the dashboard mount, and the angle is perfect for me, and of course adjustable to however you wish to tilt it.)
It also plays MP3s, so you can load your ipod songs to an SD disk and play them, though I admit I haven't tried this yet.
Love it. Couldn't really ask for more.

Great product for the price (I paid $306 w/ free shipping). Come with 3 free months of the FM traffic service. Comparable to a TomTom 720 w/o mapshare. The mount works on windshield only which is illegal in some states so you may require an optional dash or A/C mount. It has an optional safety feature that requires it to be at rest to program (which can be turned off). This is good because my wife has already had a near miss with a mailbox while trying to multitask. Mount it out of arms length for over ambitious types. Blue tooth works great with my phone. It automatically switches to night mode based on an internal clock. Great product I am considering a second one for my car

This is my first GPS. It's pretty easy to use, does what it's supposed to, is fun to have, takes a lot of the anxiety out of going to new places. Voice is loud and clear, having the street names (text-to-speech) helps a lot. So far have discovered at least one new restaurant from POI.
Drawbacks:
When it gives you a route that, for various reasons, you really don't want to go (questionable area, propensity for sudden traffic jams even if it is unclogged at the moment, etc.) I haven't found any good way to get it to give me a different route instead. Yes, you can choose between fastest and shortest route, etc., but that doesn't usually solve the problem. In one case, I found I could get around it by indicating Triboro Bridge as a stop along the way, but overall it's a limitation. Otherwise, I can go my own way and listen to the voice get kind of peeved as it repeats, "Recalculating," and tries to get me back to the original route until it finally gives up. But that only works if you're pretty confident of a good portion of the trip already. The traffic feature, which is one reason I got this model, hasn't been much help yet and doesn't work in some areas, but I still have to give that feature more of a try. The thickness makes it impossible to stick in your pocket when you don't want to leave it in the car, so you need some kind of bag or case to carry it in. The manual is skimpy and leaves a lot unexplained.
Those issues aside, though, overall I'm happy with it, and some of the drawbacks are probably common to other GPS models as well. Final analysis, I recommend it.

Amazon's price for the Garmin StreetPilot c550 is excellent and the GPs system has easy to use features...and it also talks! Unfortunately, the power chord does not fit a VW Passat or Audi A6 cigarette lighter. Garmin says this is rare but acknowledges that there may be a few car models that cannot use the product. The literature does NOT include this caution.
