4 out of 5 stars A decent "starter" GPS for the price.......2007-06-03

The I-Finder GO, at $79, has a lot to offer for a bare-bones unit. It has a 16-channel, WAAS capable receiver which usually locks onto the satellites in one minute or less (assuming you have not moved more than about 100 miles from the last position with the unit turned off). A full cold start, where the unit has to re-orient itself after being moved several hundred miles or more, is still quite fast, maybe 5 minutes or less. The unit can be set to "require" WAAS in calculating it's position; this results in all positions and track points being generally accurate to 7 meters or less (With WAAS disabled, positions can be hundreds of feet off if satellite DOP is high).
The GO can usually get and maintain lock even inside wood frame buildings, automobiles, or under tree cover. Readability of the display is best in full sunlight, otherwise, the backlight offers two brightness levels. Battery life is excellent, and the GO uses two standard "AA"'s. The GO has a 4-pin serial output port for NMEA-0183 I/O so it can "talk" to other NMEA devices such as a chartplotter or autopilot. The unit can also be powered externally through this port by a 3 volt DC adapter (*DO NOT APPLY 12 volts TO THIS UNIT!*)

For only $79, there are obviously some features that the I-Finder GO doesn't offer. The most noticeable are the lack of removeable memory and the lack of a USB or RS-232 port for data transfer of Routes, Tracklogs, and Waypoints. The built-in basemap of the GO offers only major state and federal highways, andn only a few county roads and primary city streets (usually with no names). The built-in road map includes ONLY the Continental US and Hawaii; it DOES NOT include any road details for Alaska, or any part of Canada.
One other caution about the GO: panning the map and planning routes is very slow. The price you pay for excellent battery life is a very underpowered map display processor.

If you need more features, the I-Finder H2O may be a better choice. The H2O and H2OC use SD flash card memory to store extra mapping detail and record user data like track logs, so they are expandable, whereas the GO is not. Lowrance's add-on maps are about the same price as Garmin's - around $100 gets you the MapCreate DVD for the US, There is also a set of MapCreate CD's for Canada, also priced at around $100.

One other note about Lowrance I-Finders: The track logs (actually called Trails by Lowrance) contain the horizontal position ONLY, and do not include the elevation or time/date stamp for the track points. If you need your track logs to contain these extra data fields, you may want to consider the Garmin GPS models (E-Trex Legend/Vista, 60Cx, or 76Cx) instead of the I-Finder.

5 out of 5 stars Great little unit.......2007-04-10

Bought this unit to try out a mapping unit after having 2 Garmins and a Magellan w/o maps and I must say I am impressed ! Battery life is triple that of my other units. Accuracy is just as good as my units that I paid twice as much for. The maps are pretty basic low to medium detail but I wasn't looking for high detail maps. I have mapping software for that. This unit has many more features than I expected and is a great buy for the money.

2 out of 5 stars What you pay for is what you get.......2007-03-09

Pretty basic black and white unit; screen is hard to see in bright light situations. I'm going to sell it and upgrade.

5 out of 5 stars Lowrance iFinder GO GPS.......2007-01-10

This is a great product, with many quality features. Very well priced, quality, precision instrument. Recommend to others who need a low priced yet quality GPS.

4 out of 5 stars Great basic unit- but don't pay retail.......2007-01-08

I was looking for another GPS to replace my *old* Magellan 310. Something that had mapping. I found this unit after Christmas at REI (of all places!) on sale for $45.

Here is the short story on this unit. The road mapping is accurate, but basic, Major roads are shown, but no secondary roads. Images of local lakes are there, but not detailed (my lakehouse waypoint doesn't show it is located on the water) and are low resolution. The trail marking feature is right on and very useful. With this feature, I could (though I won't) put this in the pocket of the car and see exactly where my teen has traveled. On my boat I can exactly retrace my course with this feature. Battery life good, backlighting good (amber, with 2 levels of brightness).

All in all I am pleased for the money. If you are looking for super detailed maps and something to interface with a PC, then spend more. Would have been disappointed of I had paid $90-100 for it. It was an excellent value at price I paid.

Lowrance iFinder Hunt packs GPS navigation into a rugged, compact device.
Simply plot a route via the easy-to-use keypad, and the iFinder Hunt follows the path precisely, with intuitive navigating that keeps you from veering off course. As with the best GPS navigators, the iFinder Hunt is so reliable that its 12 parallel channel GPS and WAAS receiver is accurate to within a few meters, making it appropriate not just for hunting, but also hikes, boating, and road trips. Each trip is completely customizable, with the ability to create new routes, waypoints, trails, and more. You can also easily recalculate your trip route should you get distracted and lose your way, and thanks to the MMC/SD card slot, the device can save and retrace up to 100 of your favorite plot trails, with up to 10,000 points in each path.

The device holds more than just previous routes, however. It also includes a built-in, medium-detail map of the continental U.S. and Hawaii, with all incorporated U.S. cities, state and interstate highways (with exits and exit services information), and large- and medium-sized lakes and streams. The iFinder Hunt is also compatible with Lowrance's optional MapCreate 6 custom mapping software, which offers a full set of searchable land features, including landmarks, streets, addresses, shopping areas, and points of interest. Users will need to load the mapping information on a compatible MMC or SD digital memory card, however (the iFinder Hunt accepts cards as large as 512 MB). Other electronic maps and charts that work with the iFinder Hunt include FreedomMaps, Fishing Hot Spots, LakeMaster Pro Maps, NauticPath USA, and Navionics. And folks with a zest for detail will appreciate the dual processors, which let you scroll quicker and receive faster screen updates. The processors are particularly handy when using the 40 map zoom ranges (from 0.02 to 4,000 miles), or when recording up to 2,000 waypoints or 100 routes.

It's as a hunting aid that the iFinder really excels, however. The compass option, for instance, helps you keep your bearing when the terrain is unfamiliar, while the barometric altimeter displays the elevation of your current location. Hunters will also dig the scouting function, which allows them to define their favorite hunting area by drawing a boundary on the map; the area subsequently appears on the iFinder Map, helping users keep abreast of their position within the scouted area at all times. The device also offers specific hunting waypoints with hunting-appropriate symbols.

Additional features include a three-inch white LED backlit screen with 240 x 180 resolution, a port for connecting an optional external GPS+WAAS antenna, backup memory for storing your GPS data and settings, a cigarette plug power adapter for car trips, and a built-in microphone for recording voice notes. The pocket-sized unit measures 2.54 by 5.58 by 0.95 inches (W x H x D) and runs for up to 12 hours on two AA batteries (not included). It also includes a one-year warranty.

For the hiking enthusiast, the iFinder map display allows you to see your hiking plot trail (path taken); key landmarks, such as streams, roads, railroad tracks; or even add your own event markers, such as deer, trees, tent, or cabin icons. Your present hiking position and direction go travel is easy to view and the iFinder provides a straight line course (dotted line) to guide you to a chosen waypoint destination.

Although the iFinder comes with a custom built-in map, Lowrance sweetened the deal by throwing in its MapCreate USA Topo 6 software CD-ROM, along with an MMC digital memory card and an MMC/SD card reader/writer (Plus Package). MapCreate 6 offers a full set of searchable land features and more than two million points of interest, including restaurants, lodging, gas stations, emergency services, airports, shopping destinations, and more. It's the ideal mapping software for getting from point A to point B, whether point B is across town or across the country. The included MMC memory card and card reader, meanwhile, help you transfer the mapping data from your PC to the iFinder. As a bonus, the iFinder also works with a variety of preloaded memory cards (no PC required), such as FreedomMaps, Fishing Hot Spots Elite, and LakeMaster Pro Maps.

To ensure efficient navigation for beginners -- and to simplify operation for everyone else -- Lowrance included both easy and advanced navigation modes. The easy mode minimizes the functionality but streamlines the features, and is ideal for situations that require simple, quick directions. Data-wise, the unit supports up to 1,000 waypoints and 1,000 event markers, along with 40 map zoom ranges (from 0.02 to 4,000 miles). Additional features include a 2.9-inch high-contrast backlit LED screen with 160 x 120 resolution, a port for connecting an optional external GPS+WAAS antenna (the FA-8), internal backup memory for storing your GPS data and settings, and support for FaceOffs face covers, which snap on and off effortlessly to give your iFinder its own unique flair. Lowrance sells FaceOffs in red, blue, yellow, black, and camouflage colors.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth for the money... and its made in mexico.......2006-03-12

This GPS unit is good for trecking but not for navigation. The builtin background US map has just interstates and notional highways. It find the exits to restautants and points of intrests from an interstate but doesnt give any directions to locate the needed place.

Gadget is not user friendly and too confusing for a 1st time user.

Its too big in size to put it in a pocket and doest come with any other accessory. MP3 player of this size is not of much use.

Lowrance wants money for all detailed maps which cost apx $100 for each. They even want $50 for a suction mount which is rediculuous for a $150 gadget. SD/MMC card slot in built below the AA battery slot and the maps can be loaded to SD card only by buying a USB SD slot adapter. This GPS doesnt have a USB port to connect to the computer directly. Thus lowrance wants more money for all these accessories.

I guess lowrance should make market by competing with its competitors for lower prices and giving more quality products. But its hard for a mexican made gadget to compete with the existing market

4 out of 5 stars Lowrance iFinder Go2.......2006-12-03

Unit is mostly used for hiking/hunting in the fairly rugged terrain of Eastern Tenn. and Westewrn N. Car. The iFinder is up and running in less than 2min, with a clear view of the S. horizon. It is just as accurate and dependable as other, more costly GPS WAAS units in our hunting club. The included US map is fun to use but not something for anyone wanting/needing a serious road navigation unit. I experience no major problems using the unit while driving. I highly endorse the iFinder Go 2.2 for anyone seeking an accurate and dependable WAAS capable GPS. If you need expandable memory and detailed road navigation, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent maps, but a tiny screen..........2006-06-29

We use this GPS every day to find residential lots by boat on large lakes. Most important to us, this unit has excellent, accurate maps, better than the Garmin or Magellan. For the price, it is impossible to beat.

Like any new tool, it takes a bit to get used to it. The menus could be easier to navigate, and in the light, the screen contrast and small (2") B&W display are hard to read, especially if you have trouble with the little displays on phones and such. The screen is best viewed at night with the backlighting. Manually entering coordinates and names is also clumbersome, as you have to scroll through each letter using the ^v <> keys. Battery life is good, but with 1/4 of a battery remaining, it may have trouble getting it's fix, so we always carry a spare charged set of batteries.

5 out of 5 stars Lowrance iFinder Go2.......2006-02-19

I am a newbie to GPS and there is definitely a learning curve. The Lowrance manual that comes with the unit is excellent to getting you started quickly, but you absolutely must get the advanced manual, available on-line at lowrance.com, to really enjoy the features. It does take some study and practice, but it is worth the effort, it is not that bad and the unit is (to me) impressive. It does not have street-by-street navigation, and it doesn't talk to me, but units that do cost $hundreds more. When I am in my car, it is quite usable; otherwise, street-by-street navigation is unnecessary anyway. I have recommended this unit to family, and feature-for-feature, I thought it was the best value of all the units I found in its price range. It quickly locates the satellites, often faster than the documentation would suggest, and I have found it remarkable that it has maintained the signals in very improbable situations. It is much more sensitive and reliable than I expected after reading another review that complained about signal acquisition and maintenance; I have no comlaints whatsoever about that.

I do admit that when I get the extra available $$ I may get a color street-by-street unit that talks to me; it would be safer in an urban environment while driving, but I really don't need it. I would also like a slightly larger screen for when I don't have my glasses.

A couple of words about service. It is a truism that modern solid-state electronics either fails very quickly or lasts a long long time. I had a defective unit and it failed during the first couple of weeks. (This also underscores the importance of putting it to a lot of use, testing out its features etc., to give it a good burn-in). Call to service was easy, the technicians clearly knowledgeable and when it was discovered that the problem couldn't be handled over the phone authorization to return the unit was readily provided; and they sent me a replacement unit within 24 hours of receiving it. About the only complaint was I had to pay the cost of sending it to the factory which wasn't too bad, except the post office raised its fee for insuring the parcel.

In any case, I unreservedly recommend this product.
