Customer Reviews:
Love this product!.......2007-12-21
I've had my Zen for 7 months now and absolutely love it.
PICTURE: The picture quality is amazingly crisp and clear. The widescreen on this player really adds to the quality as well. When you convert a movie using the included software you will never lose any of the video quality in conversion. With this picture you are able to see a clear picture no matter what angle you have the player at. Another cool thing when you are watching a movie is when you pause, stop or shut off your player, when you turn it back on and go back on that movie it will be where you left off.
MEMORY: I have 27 full length movies on there, 1 one hour show, 92 podcasts, 249 songs and 185 photos and I still have 8739 MB of space out of my 30 GBs. It has a slot you can add a seperately sold attachment for a memory card reader, but I have no clue why you would ever need the extra space. I'm not sure if you could add photos using those cards or not, but I believe you can because there is a setting for copy from card.
SOUND: The volume goes up to 25 and is plenty loud enough when your in a room with not a lot of noise (I have 5 boys so quiet to me isn't the same as silence). When using headpones you will often need to turn the volume down because it gets extrememly loud. I've tried many other headphones and can not find any that compare to the sound of the ones that came with my player. While in the car I hook up an FM transmiter (Walmart for $20) and can hear the movies through the car stereo. This is a favorite for the kids to watch movies.
EXTRAS: There is a date and time setting, which includes an alarm. Under organizer there is a calendar that you can add events and scroll through years up to 2037! There is a tasks section seperate from the calendar as well and an address book. Also in the extras section is a removable device that says you can configure a portion of the drive to be used as portable storage. I have not used this feature though. Although not in the extra section there is a microphone setting that allows you to record voice. I have used this for things like lists and such and the kids singing, but not sure if it would do well with lectures and such since I have only done recordings close up. They worked wonderful for me. This player also has a FM Radio that uses the headphones as an antenna, which you must have plugged in for the radio to work.
BATTERY: The battery on this player has yet to let me down. Just the other not I watched two full length movies before it ran out and even then it didn't start out with a completely full charge. The AC cord that is included works great and you are able to watch the movies while it is charging. There is a lock on the power button that will save battery life while watching movies.
NEGATIVES: There are very few negatives I have found with this player. When fast forwarding or rewinding a video you can not see where the video is at to know when to stop. I've learned to pay attention to the minute and second counter when I do this. Another negative is when adding calendar appointments you must do this through your computer. You can not just go and add from your player. You can use the recorder section to remind yourself of the things you need to remind yourself to add. The only other negative is that it takes some time to convert movies for your player. I get it going on the computer at night then go to bed, so I'm really not sure the exact time it takes. When I first got the player we did one while waiting and it seemed like forever.
Not a single one of these negatives would deter me from buying this product and I would most certainly recommend this to anyone and everyone...and I do. I show this off to everyone I know and they are always very impressed.
My husband bought this for me for my birthday after doing extensive research. He uses the reviews on Amazon for many things he researches, so I hope this review helps someone else in their quest for a wonderful portable media player.
so glad i didnt get that other thing.......2007-12-13
Before the CZVW, I used a combination of my cellphone [512 MB] and a cd player to get musical entertainment while i walked, waited, washed dishes, settled down for a nap, etc. It got to be a drag, because I found that I wanted every piece of music that I owned all on one lil thing. I had my laptop, but it's terribly inconvenient. When it came down to choice, I was leaning more towards the ipod, then I remembered reading something about Creative, Inc having a few products that are amazing. It's been about a month since I ordered my CZVW, and I must say that it is the most amazing little machine I have. It is everything I've ever wanted and I'd be foolish to ask for more.
A GREAT product!.......2007-12-12
I've purchased 2 of these (the first one was stolen and I only lasted 2 days before I had to buy a new one) and couldn't live without one. My daily bus commute of 1 hr. each way is a JOY now. The picture quality is terrific, battery time great, and it has plenty of neat easy-to-use features.
Creative Zen Vision W.......2007-12-08
I love my Zen Vision W. I have copied 130 short movies, 3500 songs, and hundreds of pictures onto it and still have 10 GB left to fill! It is easy to navigate through the menus and has good sound. I also like the built-in speaker for times when I don't feel like putting on my headphones. The viewable screen area is only 3 3/4 inches wide, not 4.3 inches, but it is still impressive.
Don't buy Creative Zen product.......2007-12-05
I bought Creative Zen PMC in November 2005. It stops working last month because of the battery swelling up. I have to break the battery door to get it out. I am afraid that it will explode and contact the company.
Response from Creative:
Unfortunately, your Zen PMC is no longer in warranty. This product is ending it's service life and has been replaced with newer and more feature rich products. We are no longer maintaining PMC stock or accessories stock in either retail or repair channels.
The most that I'm going to be able to offer to you is a 20% discount on the purchase of a new product.

Xtra Problems.......2007-12-12
I've had this product for about 2 years. Yes, it's been reliable and for the $ is probably okay, but I think there are better Creative Products available now. This thing has always been hard for me to use (both the software and the physical device). Consequently, I mainly use it as my "primary" storage device from which I load/download a smaller Creative Rock (which I highly recommend by the way). Anyway, when I use it in the dark, I always am hitting something wrong. As an example, last night I had it set to "Play Any Track" and this song came on and I thought "I wonder what song that is" and as I touched my Xtra (probably brushing a wheel or button in the process), it immediately switched to another song. Stuff like that happens all the time with this thing. I think it's the multi-use wheels and buttons that are the culprits. A primary requirement for any of my mp3 players is that they are Audible-ready and the Xtra is that. I wouldn't buy it again and as I said, I believe there are better Creative products out there now.
My Faithful Brick.......2007-11-25
Now, I can't remember if I got this thing in '03 or '04, but it has lasted this long and still runs great. Sure, the battery life is starting to wane, but it has been three or four years! Three or four year of continuous, if not constant use. It lasted me through the latter years of high school, and its lasted me back and forth on the bus to college for closing in on a year and a half now. The sound quality is great, and, because they're Creative, it comes with a sound equalizer than comes with presets like rock, acoustic, classical, auditorium, etc. It even lets you put in you're own settings if you'd like. To be honest though, the only settings I've used are off and (mostly) rock. Sure, this thing has (or had anyway, as they seem to have disappeared) a few problems. I'm a pretty lazy fellow so I'd leave it charging overnight and then just pick it up in the morning, and every once and a while it would lock up on start up, but popping out the battery for a second did the trick without memory loss. And at one point a few months ago it would see to go back in time and start playing a playlist I had be listening to the previous day. But all that has seemed to stop. Sure, its ugly as hell, and its carrying case (which its been in since practically day one) is ugly too, and its a brick, but its my brick. I love the ugly little troll. If you're looking for something thats cheap (now anyways) and functional, you can't really go all that wrong. The day I upgrade will be a sad day indeed...
Owned player for over 2 years, absolutley no problems.......2007-11-11
I bought my Nomad Zen Xtra almost 3 years ago. Great sound, huge capacity and obviously great reliability. Battery lasts 5+ hours consistently. Bought a second battery for those long plane trips. Original battery still holds its charge as well as it did when new even after many, many charges. Fabulous sound especially after using its built in graphic equalizer. I love it.
Do I have any complaints. Well, the software to download songs from my computer, while easy, does not seem to recognize my Windows folders as playlists??? I wish Creative allowed more creative flexibility.
My wife wanted an iPod Nano and it is cute, light, has wonderful touch operating functions and sounds good. But we paid $30 extra for a repair/replacement plan because it's batteries are known to fail and are not user replaceable. Should the iPod fail, how long will my wife have to wait for a repair or replacement? This is a question one should not have to worry about and I don't with my Nomad Zen Xtra 30 GB player.
Do not upgrade the firmware!!!.......2007-10-24
Do not upgrade the firmware in this (or in fact in any other Creative) MP3 player and it will work forever. Creative's USB drivers are not reliable and their forum is useless.
worth it??.......2007-09-04
I had this player for about 2 years. The drive crashed on me within a year, and creative did take it back and fix it. About a year later, the buttons broke, and I was no longer able to turn the volume up. Although it held up ok, I think that for the impressiveness of the outside case, it was very poor. The user interface is horrible, I couldn't stand using the player without having a pre-made playlist

Great Amazon & Creative support!.......2007-07-05
The player does all that it says. But everyone's worst nightmare is getting a bad one out of the box, which happened to me. I called Creative support and the helped me confirm the hard drive was defective. Then I told Amazon and in 5 minutes had a prepaid return label and a new player within the week. That is great in anyone's book. Still getting used to the player, but it works great!
Good product for the price.......2007-03-30
Pros:
A lot of features such as Video Playback, MP3, Organizer, Alarm Clock, Voice Recorder, FM Tuner. Using their software is basically like opening up explorer in Windows. Resolution and sound quality are nice. Having buttons instead of a touch pad allows for more precise control. Removable battery pack is nice. There is an additional extended battery pack available for purchase. Has a speaker so you can blast ghetto music in a fancy restaurant if you'd like. Can take a CompactFlash card to transfer data. Many other fun features.
Cons:
OMG is it HUGE!!! I honestly wasn't expecting it to be THAT big. I thought "hm... maybe a little bit bigger than the Zen Vision M...?" This thing is almost the exact same size as my Nintendo DS! I just can't get over how HUGE it is. It's a bit of a turn off for those who might want to use it to exercise and walk around with. Think super old school Walkman but significantly heavier! When the delivery guy dropped it off, I was shocked that the box was so HUGE!! I thought they had sent me the wrong item! And then I opened it...!!! I was almost repulsed by how prehistoric it looked!
More cons... The thing LAGS. It definitely doesn't operate nearly as fast as the iPod when switching menus. I guess that's because of all the things it offers. It does get to be a little bit tedious and frustrating.
Even more cons... Lack of accessories. I guess I probably won't need a toughskin or protector for this thing, because if I drop it, it'll damage whatever it lands on, purely by its size.
Overall, as far as the functions of this player are concerned, I'm happy with it. However, I'm still trying to get over the ridiculous size of the thing. Do I dare bring it out in public? What would my friends say? Would people stare?! I highly suspect that they will laugh.
Oh well... I guess I was really only going to use it to play music in the car. I must remember to hide it in the glove box before I let any passengers in the car.
Creative Zen Vision 30 GB Multimedia Player (white) .......2007-03-12
I just love my Multimedia Player. I can play songs, listen to books and store pictures to carry around with me. The screen is big and sharp so you can see pictures very well. I have not tried to play videos on it yet and I have not had any problems so I don't have any complaints.

Good product.......2007-01-14
Have had this for almost a year now.
Pros:
The battery life is good.
FM radio and recording.
Video out.
Removable battery
Can also double as a portable hard disk for photos during travel (bought the flash card adapter for SD card use)
Cons:
The video angle can get irritating as you have to look straight at it but when (if) found, its very good (but not as good as PSP)
I would recommend this over the iPod as I've used both. Its also easier (and MUCH faster) to transfer videos to the Zen than to the iPod.

Great for the Price.......2007-04-22
I bought this mp3 player about 18 months ago because I needed a large amount of hard drive space for a smaller price than the overpriced ipods. After being satisfied with the Amazon reviews on this player at the time, I decided that this was the player for me. I've used it regularly since I've had it and I've had no real problems with it.
You do have some naming and genre errors when you load in new songs, but I think it's a small price to pay for the deal you get. This doesn't have any of the fancy video capable technology in newer models, so if you want that, look elsewhere.
I also don't recommend this for people who want a mp3 player for mostly exercise purposes; it is heavier than half of the other players out there.
For those who don't mind the little extra weight and a little time in checking the song information, I'd recommend this player if you want a good device with a large song capacity.
Not for fashion victims.......2005-11-21
I spent the best part of six months looking for an mp3 player before finally buying one of these. Okay so I don't look like the height of fashion, because I don't have a clickwheel and it's not white, I don't get to wear "mug me now" ipod headphones
but guess what... this works really well, storage is massive, I keep around two hours of mpg video on mine as well as the .000's of tracks I've uploaded. The side mounted button does everything easily and I've not yet had to refer to the instruction book. Best feature though is the fact that you get a much larger amp in this kit than you do in a comparable ipod - fantastic when my main use for it is listening through a motorcycle fitted system - ah the joys of Metallica in lane 3 of the motorway. For those who complain that the accompanying software doesn't get the names of their cd's etc right, just load your cd's onto your pc using windows media player - it'll identify the albums for you then just select and export via windows explorer - simple. I like this kit, creative issue updated drivers pretty regularly and with the £100 I saved I bought a ton of tracks. Don't be a victim.
this so called .......2005-02-12
When i first got my mp3 player I was so excited to use it. Then I tried to put my CD's onto the Creative Labs software. But I had to name all 5,000 of my songs because the ... software doesn't have the CDDB to figure out the names unlike the fabulous iPod (which i now own and is 5 billion times better than the Zen Xtra).
Also when I was at the Gym, I was using the treadmill and all of the sudden my song stopped playing and I noticed that the screen had gone blank. When i went home I contacted customer service and they said I needed to pay 20 Bucks to send it to them and then they would repair the Hard drive and just charge me for it.
When I complained that I had a warranty they said that my warranty wouldn't be valid by the time they would've received my Zen Xtra.
Finally Creative Labs talks about how this piece of ... is "portable". C'mon, do you really think this lugnut will fit in my pocket, this thing is practically a mechanical brick.
The only thing I say that satisfies me is the fact that the battery can be taken out of the player so i can replace when the darn thing fails(which happens wayyyyyy to often).
DON'T BUY THIS!!!.......2004-08-04
This is the only product I have ever purchased that I would ever IMPLORE people NOT to buy. I actually bought one and had to have it replaced after 6 months when it just stopped working. The second one is full of bugs that screw up song sequence. The battery dies quickly and the player likes to shut off for no apparent reason. Customer service is a joke. I'm not saying spend the extra money on an Ipod but STAY AWAY FROM CREATIVE!!!
There's a Reason Why This Player is So Cheap . . . .......2004-07-27
I've been following the specs and prices of jukebox MP3 players for a couple years now, just waiting for a bargain to pounce on and digitize my whole music collection. A few weeks ago, I noticed the impressive price drop of the Creative Zen Xtra (30 and 40 GB models) and couldn't resist.
I guess I should say now that I own an iPod instead.
Why? While this brand and model might be suitable for some, I feel that only one word describes this gadget: CLUNKY. First of all, it's a pretty hefty device, it's size and weight comparable to an old cassette tape player. The screen isn't very sharp, and the menu scroll button is cheap and takes careful "balancing" of your fingertip (you'll know immediately what I mean if you try it). Furthermore, the model I received was either defective . . . or there just might be something to the gripes on this site about the battery life on these models - as my Zen Xtra would chug with juice for only a pathetic 80 minutes. While the Creative Zens are unique (to, say, iPods) in that you can remove and replace the battery, the claims of the company are just downright misleading. That's why I bought it over a variety of other brands: the advertised "12 hour battery life!" Nope.
Of course, there are some things that made it hard to send back for a refund. The sheer memory size, 30 or 40 GB, is HUGE. And Creative DID get one thing right - the SUPERB sound quality. Absolutely amazing, it makes the iPod sound bland. With cool effect equalizers that turn the sound into environments such as "Concert Hall," "Indoor Arena," and "Auditorium," a whole new experience is added to old musical favorites.
But altogether, the bad far outweighs the good. If you're terribly strapped for cash, go for it. But unless you plan on keeping it plugged into the wall for home use, this isn't the player for you. Shell out the extra $50-70 for the iRiver or iPod.
