4 out of 5 stars Saving my slides.......2008-01-02

I was an avid photographer in the 70s and 80s and have accumulated numerous slides of my family. These slides are now starting to show signs of decay. Using the Nikon Cool Scan V has helped me to restore and retain the beauty of these slides. My only negative comment regarding this equipment is the slowness of the process. I can only scan one slide at a time and it takes roughly 45 seconds per slide. I am scanning them as TIF files and each slide is about 65 MB. The scanner does a great job of capturing all the details of the slides at this level of scanning.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing.......2007-11-29

Why spend $500 for a scanner that can only do one image at a time, when you can get an Epson or Canon flatbed that will do a dozen or more, in one pass? Well, because the Coolscan makes surprisingly high quality scans whereas the flatbeds (which were never intended to scan small pieces of film) do not.

In theory, you can get very high resolution files from a flatbed (and if you spend $20,000 on a Scitex, you'll see that flatbed scanners can, indeed make great 35mm scans). But the $300-700 dollar flatbed scanners do not have the optics or precision to get the best from a 1" x 1.5" piece of film. Worse, the quality varies across the bed, with the center usually giving the sharpest scan. These scanners can generate very large files but if the sharpness, detail and bit depth (shadow detail) aren't there, file size does not matter.

I wouldn't recomend the big Coolscan unless you are very serious because you can get pretty good scans of medium format film from almost any scanner that has a light in the lid. But with 35mm the Coolscan rules.

There are two drawbacks, however. While the Coolscan isn't terribly slow, scanning one slide or neg at a time, is. The more expensive model, with the slide feeder may or may not be worth it to you. The other drawback is the NikonScan software which has a unique property--it does not work reliably on a PC and it doesn't work on a Mac, either. True, cross-platform non-functionality! Here, the solution is to use VueScan which can be downloaded for $39 and is trouble-free.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Scan quality, Not very good speed.......2007-11-22

Bought the scanner to scan a collection of thousands of pictures that my dad has taken over the years. I started scanning some recent pictures without any processing and noticed immediately how many scratches were on the pictures. You can't really notice them by looking at the negatives. Enabled ICE, and it took care of the scratches. If you looked hard enough, you could barely see where the scratches were, but the overall results turned out great.
I found that using GEM and ROC in addition to ICE really enhanced the pictures. I scanned some negatives from the 80's, and without any processing, the colors were faded. When I enabled these features, it brought real life to the pictures. Keep in mind that it's trying to restore the original color of the pics, so it may not always be perfect. Under the highest resolution, which I use, some pictures look as if they were taken with some of the high-megapixel cameras of today. My dad used a canon eos camera since the 80's.
The biggest drawback of the scanner for me is the speed. It takes approx 4 minutes per frame, or 12 minutes for 4 frames with ICE, ROc, and GEM... not much less if you use ICE only. This does depend on how fast your computer is. Whenever I was scanning, the processor was being used heavily utilized with a 3500+ amd processor. So don't attempt with a slow computer! Another drawback is when pictures are scanned, there are white and black borders around the pictures which the software does not remove. I hope there is a tool out there that could take care of this. One last fuss I have about the camera is the batch scanning. I wish the software could let you scan strip after strip without having to click and adjust settings everytime.
In the end, if you have patience and determination, you can get very good looking pictures!

5 out of 5 stars Can't Believe I'm Back In The Sixties At Last.......2007-11-22

My scanner arrived on 10/25/07 about noon. Hardware/software installation went very smoothly. I have a three year old DELL Dimension 8400 series computer with a Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system. I would guess I was up and running in about two or three hours, ready to scan my first images. Over the next two or three days I experimented with the scanner controls on my inital slides which I used as a learning tool. I had selected this scanner based on reviews and Q&A available on the internet and at this point I am very satisfied with the quality of the product. I bought it to scan something on the order of 1500 35mm slides and 600 126-film slides all of which date back to the 1960s and the early 1970s. At this point I have scanned about 375 slides -- mostly 35mm slides. For my purposes which are family slide shows and selected prints for a family album, I get very good results for about 85% of the slides using only the Digital ICE and ROC controls. The Digital DEE control has proven very effective for the few slides that have detail of interest in the under exposed areas of the image. For the remaining slides, I've learned to use the Curves control and the Color Balance (Brightness/Contrast)controls to improve images that were originally underexposed. I had initially been using Photobase 4.5 for brightness/contrast control for those slides.
I feel at this stage of my project I am still in the learning phase of the art and science of film slide scanning using the Nikon CoolScan V. I probably haven't read everything -- although I did try more than once -- in the Nikon print manual and electronic documentation about what a control does and why and how you might want to use it to improve on a given slide. In general I would say that their documentation is sufficient to get you started. But sometimes you need -- or at least want -- more than just a start. On a few slides I've tried to use the Manual Focus Adjustment to improve on the focus. The documentation on Manual Focus that I could find is very primitive. There is a Manual Focus Adjustment (Position) numeric slider control whose units are not identified. Further documentation in this area would be very helpful to me.
Over all, I am very satisfied with this product and can recommend it to others with a similar need.

4 out of 5 stars Good Scanner, but Hard Install.......2007-10-27

Great scanner after you get past the install. After many hours of trying too install, I had to call tech. support. Afteer several days of trying things finally got the scanner working and now does great scans. Nikon needs to improve on their install program. Still I love the scanner.

4 out of 5 stars It's The best But could be better.......2007-12-26

I have scanned over 30000 slide with my scanner with not to many problems one problem is that you get is over scan on lite colors white over black as an example as a bulk slide scanner goes it's the best one.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great, either.......2007-06-18

I've owned this scanner for about 18 months now, and also have the slide and roll feeders. I've scanned about 12,000 images during that time, both slides and negatives.

The good news is, that for well-exposed negatives or slides, this scanner is fast and does a very high quality job. The bad news is that the software is buggy, and Nikon's tech support is non-existent. There are still no 64-bit drivers.

I'm running XP-Pro on an AMD x2 4600+ ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe with 2 GB memory and around a TB of SATA disk. While scanning, one of the two CPUs is totally consumed, but this is probably because of the polled USB driver. There are 3 software errors that keep occurring. First is the well-known Nikon Scan has encountered an error and must close - sorry for trashing your data. This malfunction occurs about every 10-40 frames. It simply requires a restart of the application. It usually happens just after or during a preview setup, so the work loss is minimal, but annoying. Nikon support ignores all reports to their support site of this particular problem.

The second problem is that the scanner software simply freezes. This usually happens in multiscan mode. To recover from this requires that the scanner be power cycled and the software needs to be killed with the task manager. Nikon support has also ignored this bug report.

The third problem is that when a slide jams in the feeder, the application loses communication with the scanner and must be restarted. Not too bad, since I had to manually clear the jam, but really an indication of the poor quality of the software error handling.

The software is incomplete with the slide scanner, in that it doesn't allow a preview scan for each slide like it does for the roll/strip feeder. That is basically a software issue, although the sloppy handling and positioning of the $500 slide feeder is also in play, in that it is probably impossible to get a complete alignment of the second feed with the first. (It actually misses a bit with the strip feeder as well, although not enough to matter.

The slide feeder is a bit of a kludge. It will require some modification to get it to work reliably enough to walk away from, but after a bit of tinkering, cutting and installing a modified pressure plate, it now can feed slides that are in good condition well enough that it seldom jams.

Another problem I have is with the hardware specification - it claims a Dmax of 4.8, which is just the specification of the 16-bit A/D converter attached to the sensor. But the sensor has nowhere near that much dynamic range, so the specification is downright misleading. Because of that, this scanner continues the history of scanners having great difficulty with dense slides. While Dee helps some, the problem of the limited dynamic range of the sensor becomes readily apparent. The amount of smear across high contrast boundaries is intolerable when scanning some very nice Velvia or even Provia images. If you shoot slides for scanning, consider over-exposing by 1/2 stop or so if the subject can tolerate that.

As mentioned earlier, the multi-scan setting does not seem to work very well, due to the software crashing.

Scan image Enhancement is a totally useless piece of software. The ICE works well for dust removal, but may give some image deterioration on some Kodachromes, although most work out okay. ROC works quite well for faded images, such as pre-85 Ektachromes and older negatives. Occasional Kodachromes are also restored. But there doesn't seem to be any difference between the setting from 1-4 that I have been able to detect. And you'll get bizarre results if ROC is one and the n\image hasn't faded.
GEM is okay for grain reduction, but like most such programs it loses detail fast, so us it sparingly. Faster negatives need it, and some of the older or faster slides films also, but if you can get away without it, then don't turn it on.

Negative scanning is very good, with the colors either well-balanced or easy to correct (Reala, for example, needs some manual setting to get right). But the negatives are grainy compared to slides. So you either get dynamic range problems or grain problems. Pick your favorite imperfection. I find negatives a breeze to scan, but the ultimate quality is not quite as good as a good slide scan, provided the slide is not too dense.

So Nikon gets only three stars for this. The idea is good, but the lack of dynamic range and software problems, coupled with Nikon tech support's utter incompetence or non responsiveness turn this into a mediocre product. Unfortunately, there is nothing much better at a reasonable price. Drum or pseudo-drum scanners may be better (I wouldn't count on it, though), but I don't have 10k to invest.

You'll get as good an image quality from a comparably priced 10MP digital SLR, so unless you have a lot of old stuff to scan, this is not the way to enter the digital age at this point in time. D80, D200 and comparable Canon or Fuji DSLRs give images subjectively as good or better than the scanned images from this scanner and slide film.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Scanner.......2007-06-02

I have used several other film/slide scanners in the past, the 5000ED really performs. I really like the multi-scan functions for higher signal to noise and 8 or 16 bit files. I highly recommend this scanner for archiving slides and film and for get a good digital image to work with if Photoshop. I have no problems producing 16x20 prints from scanned image. Quality in and Quality out. Quick scans for such high resolution with very consistent work flow. I will be doing a more in-depth review at [...] in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Products out of the Box and Cost of Ownership.......2007-05-09

One star is not for how Nikon products perform once they work properly, it is a measure of the lack of product defects (quality) and the extra costs incurred by the customer to get Nikon scanner products to work properly.

I purchased a CoolScan-IV. When I received it, it was defective out of the box. I contacted Nikon technical support and they told me to exchange it for a new scanner. The new 12-Bit CoolScan-IV worked perfectly. When I was ready to upgrade to 16-Bits, I purchased a CoolScan-5000 and gave my CoolScan-IV away. What a mistake!

This "upgrade" scanner was a total piece of junk. The images were noisy. I immediately contacted Nikon technical support about the problem. After some back and forth, they told me there was nothing wrong with the scanner; I was the problem. I recently found an archive copy of an under-scanned photo that I scanned on the old CoolScan-IV. I compared the images. The CoolScan-IV produced a very good image. The CoolScan-5000 was horrible. Without spending hundreds of dollars to pay Nikon Service to correct Nikon's initial quality defects, I am stuck with a piece of junk.

NikonScan. NikonScan is the scanning software that comes with the Nikon scanners. When it works, NikonScan works acceptably; however, it locks up repeatedly requiring closing the program and reopening it. Earlier versions worked much better in this regard to locking up.

Bottom line, Nikon quality has deteriorated to become very poor. I just described four Nikon product quality problems (initially defective products). There is a fifth: Nikon does not stand behind errors that their technical service personnel make.

Each item described above had additional out of pocket cost or lost time associated with it. I know the scanners can perform exceptionally well once they are working to spec. I would recommend a Nikon scanner only if you are willing to unnecessarily pay out a lot of extra money and waste a lot of time correcting initial Nikon product quality defects and incompetent technical service advice.

    4 out of 5 stars Nikon CoolScan 5000 ED.......2007-05-07

I'm switching from a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 to this Nikon unit because of what I'd heard about the imaging quality of the latter. So far, I'm impressed, especially with the in-system dust and scratch remover with the color images. I do do a lot of b & w scanning and printing, so, in that realm, there's no great difference except that the manual handling of b & w film strips is a bit tricky (with the Nikon). All and all, I'm very pleased with my purchase.

3 out of 5 stars Should have come with the scanner.......2007-10-18

An accessory like this really should come with the scanner, especially prosumer gear like the Nikon CoolScan V ED for which I purchased this film strip holder. As an extra-cost accessory, something this rudimentary and flimsy should be priced at $5, not the $25 that I paid for it.

5 out of 5 stars Film Strip Holder.......2007-08-19

This is one of those tools that you either don't need or can't do without. If you want to scan 35mm positive or negative images in your Coolscan 5000 (or similar device), and you only have a single frame or two frames, you need this tool. There's simply no other way to do it. For its stated purpose, it works great. I also found I could use it to scan some smaller (Minox-sized) negative and positive images, and it worked fine.

5 out of 5 stars Nikon film holder, everyone needs one.......2007-07-20

The Nikon film holder works great, and the price was wright. The holder makes it easy to scan 35mm film, without having to cut the strip into small parts to fit in slide mounts.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have accessory for your Nikon Scanner.......2005-01-12

I returned from Iraq and instead of buying a new Nikon D-100 I purchased a new Nikon Coolscan 5000 and soon afterwards, I purchased the Strip Film Holder FH-3. I have found out that the Nikon Negative adapter (SA-21) may not be able to scan a negative on the edge of a film strip; using the FH-3 I was able to do so.
I have found it to be a must have accessory to have around when doing negative scanning.

Artixscan M1 Flatbed & Film Scanner 4800 Dpi

        Product Description

The Microtek ArtixScan M1 is a combined flatbed and film scanner for 35mm, 6cm and 4x5" film formats that also offers additional functionality to scan reflective art or prints as large as 8.5 by 14 inches. Equipped with Emulsion Direct Imaging Technology (E.D.I.T.), the Microtek ArtixScan M1 use 4800-dpi optical resolution, 16-bit digital output per channel, auto focus and new film holders with tension technology. The Microtek ArtixScan M1 offers extraordinary value to photographers, photo enthusiasts, and graphic designers in need of high-quality scans. By advancing the optical resolution to 4800 dpi with the E.D.I.T. scanning architecture, the film scanning capability will surpass the film scanning capability of dedicated film scanners while maintaining outstanding reflective scanning capability. Excelling at both film and reflective scanning, these new flatbed scanners will offer greater versatility and value to photographers, photo enthusiasts, and graphic designers. E.D.I.T. is a unique technology exclusive to Microtek that allows the optical system to scan the film emulsion without looking through the glass plate that supports reflective materials on the flatbed scanner. With E.D.I.T., the film is supported in a tray inside the scanner below the glass plate. The glassless scanning enables clearer scans of the film because it avoids the optical distortions, aberrations, and dirt that can appear in a scan that passes through the glass plate of a typical flatbed scanner. With 4800-dpi optical resolution and 48 bits per pixel, a scan of 35mm film on the Microtek ArtixScan M1 will produce results that will enable prints up to 16x24" while still holding 300 pixels per inch. In addition, large-format prints from 35mm scans can be made up to 24x36" while still holding 200 pixels per inch. Professional photographers and photo enthusiasts will be able to fully utilize the printable area offered by their photo printers f

5 out of 5 stars For medium format negatives, easily better than my local pro lab.......2006-12-21

I was astonished at what this scanner could do, in terms of preserving the gentle tones of my black and white negatives. My only regret is that there is no equivalent to Digital ICE for black and white. That problem is not unique to this scanner, of course.

The quality of the images I get from this scanner, with negatives from a basic 1970-vintage twin lens camera, trounces the images I get with a Canon 5D SLR.

The 9000ED comes with a 35MM carriage, 35MM slide carriage, and basic MF carriage. For the price, I would have preferred if they had included a larger variety, including the glass-covered or the rotating 120 unit.

5 out of 5 stars Best solution for what I needed.......2006-11-11

The device has worked exactly as I had hoped allowing me to archieve hundreds of old negatives that would have been lost or cost much more than what I paid for it. I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing scans of seriously degraded film.......2006-05-30

I bought one of these units primarily to digitally archive hundreds of old photos shot and mounted as 6x6 and 35mm slides, as well as lots of B&W 35mm negatives. The 6x6 color slides are as much as 50 years old, with some mounted in glass -- which was a bad idea, as those slides have had exceptionally severe color shifts and many have been partially eaten by fungus trapped behind the glass. The scanner's digital ICE and ROC were downright magical (GEM less so, and DEE was sometimes great but touchy to adjust for some slides). With just a few exceptions, even gross over and under exposed slides still yielded usable images. Infected slides that I could barely see through came out perfect except for little pink splotches where the fungus was particularly nasty. The only other defect observed was that interference rings were highly visible on 3 out of about 50 glass-mounted slides... which I suspect was due to the slides having been overheated years ago when they were viewed by projection. Some non-glass mounted slides had significant heat warp damage, but I didn't see serious problems in their scans. BTW, scanning 6x6 slides requires an optional adapter... it's a pitty that the adapter doesn't hold at least three 6x6 slides at once and it does take a little time to put a new slide in, but that time was hidden by the processing time using my 1.6GHz Turion laptop.
The 35mm slides are better exposed, newer, and in better condition; the worst of them was handled very well by this scanner. I haven't yet tried scanning the B&W negatives.

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-04-19

The quality of this scanner is amazing. The detail that it picks up from slides and negatives is incredible. The only drawbacks are that you have to scan bw negatives without Digital Ice (so you'll have a lot of manual cleanup to do) and the fact that there are no trays to scan 110 and 126 negative film (you could conceivably rig the existing trays to accomplish this). Still, it definitely gives you professional results. Sometimes the tray does go off track, but it's sporadic and so far nothing that can't be fixed with a reboot. A true value for your money - paying to have your negs and slides scanned would cost much more than buying this unit.

        5 out of 5 stars Distorted Ratings.......2005-10-29

The low ratings for this scanner are due to availability problems. The scanner itself is excellent!

        1 out of 5 stars Don't buy one.......2007-12-24

It's not even worth pulling out your wallet. Results are about as good as trying to draw your photos with a very blunt crayon. I get far better results using a flatbed Epson with the film adapter. Not that using a flatbed is the best idea but it is 100 times better than the 1800u. If someone gives it to you consider them a mean person and don't take it. Unless you need a rather ugly 2lb piece of plastic to clutter up your desk and spill coffee on. Even then, there's probably something better to accidentally caffeinate .

        3 out of 5 stars Slide Scanner.......2007-10-11

I had read critical reviews before purchasing. When I first tried it, the color was badly distorted and I was not able to adjust to compensate. However, as a last effort, I tried scanning in the "raw" setting. This largely solved the color distortion problem. So, overall, I am pleased with the scanner. When you consider how inexpensive it is, it is a real bargin.

        4 out of 5 stars Slide Scanner.......2007-06-28

While cleaning up my garage I found a large box with slides from our travels dating back to 1976.
The cost of buying a slideprojector and screen surpassed the cost of the scanner.
I have scanned about 200 slides already and am currently preparing a show to watch on TV. You really can not get any one to watch an actual slide show anymore.
An other beauty of this transfer from positive film to digital is that I have been able to share these pictures over the internet with old friends.
The initial quality of the scanned immage is okay, but the included Photoshop software lets you make wonderful restorations.
Although I wished that it could scan faster I am very pleased with this product. Speed it up and I will give it a 5 Star rating.
Thank you for such a wonderful opportunity to share old data so easy with old friends and new ones.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for a specific purpose.......2007-03-16

I purchased this item about a week ago, and because of the widely varying reviews, thought that I'd chime in. Normally I just buy books through Amazon and haven't been motivated to review them since I usually know what I'm getting. I am NOT an employee of Pacific Image however (or any sort of camera or computer store).

I am a graduate student in history who needed to be able to scan microfilm. I searched everywhere for a product that would let me do this. The strips fill an entire spool and are many feet long, and since they are borrowed, I can not cut them to fit a standard film scanner or flatbed with a 4-6 frame holder for negatives. Products designed for this purpose are thousands of dollars - not in a student's budget! I'd just about given up when I found this machine, and figured I didn't have much to lose since Amazon has a good return policy, so I took a chance.

Is it perfect? No. The TWAIN software that came with the computer crashed every time I tried to do more than a preliminary scan. The Adobe Elements is nice, but I have an ancient copy of Paint Shop Pro 4 I like just fine. After several crashes, I emailed the company and got a fairly useless response from them. However, an online tech reviewer who liked this product had recommended a compatible scanning program called Silverfast. I downloaded the trial version of this and lo and behold, it worked. It still took some skill and some trial by error to find good settings for the film. It didn't match any of the settings, of course, so I had to try different film options until I found one that worked. I also had to play with the detail of scan and such to avoid blurring. But after a couple of hours, I determined the settings that work. I would assume it would be easier with a standard film type. I have some slides and negatives I'll probably try also just to see how they work, and if I get remarkably different results, will comment again.

Is it fast? That depends on the detail you want. It does only scan one image at a time. However, I didn't find it hard to center the image in the scanner. It scans the pages faster than I can translate them, which is all that matters to me! If you aren't in a hurry, I don't think you'll have a big problem. In the week I've had it, I've run it some days for 3-4 hours at a stretch. I haven't had any problems with grinding noises. The scanner isn't silent, but it's in line with my old Microtek C6 - the only other scanner I've ever had. If it does break, I'll see how the company treats the warranty.

So to sum up, if you have a specific need as I did, and you're willing to take a little time to learn the Silverfast software, you can make perfectly good images with this machine. I haven't printed any of them, but I am using them on CD enlarged so that just a few words of the original hand-written records fit on the screen, and the detail and sharpness are just fine.

1 out of 5 stars Good - Before It Stopped Working.......2007-02-07

My experience with this scanner hasn't been much different from what others have reported. I've owned mine for about 5 years. From the very beginning, the scanner made a grinding sound, which continued for awhile until it warmed up (while "grinding," the scanning mechanism appeared not to be moving). The software which came with the scanner produced less than satisfactory results. I bought Silverfast AI, which provided excellent images from both negatives and slides, but which (unfortunately for me) is specific to this particular device and will not work with my newest (replacement) scanner. After two or three years in the closet, the 1800u scanner was used again for some additional slides and worked satisfactorily (after the usual grinding). Two weeks ago, however, I again attempted to perform some scans -- this time without success. The grinding sound never did stop. Dozens of attempted phone calls to tech support were unsuccessful (the answering machine continuously reports that the staff is out to lunch). I did email Scanace (the manufacturer), and received a reply instructing me to open the unit and apply vasaline to the screw drive and the track bar. I did so, without success. The motor (as has been said elsewhere) lacks sufficient power to drive the traveling scan head. As the unit is out-of-warranty, the manufacturer wants a minimum of $75.00 to service the scanner (more if the problem takes more than one hour to resolve). I was offered a motor to install myself for about $18.00, but without any assurance that this would resolve the problem. I estimate that I have performed about 150 scans. Including the cost of the unit and software to use it, that figures out to about $2.00/scan! Definitely not a bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Works for me.......2007-11-12

I had a brief interlude with APS film during 2000-2001, so I only had 16 rolls to scan with 25 shots each. The APS film adapter has performed well for me, no jams. In the Nikon Scan software, I am able to specify a crop and rotation for one frame, save the settings, and then apply the settings to each frame of an entire roll; the auto feeder lines up the frames accurately. I can walk away while 25 frames scan automatically, a real timesaver. I scan using ICE/GEM (no ROC) at 4000 dpi; the scans have much more shadow detail than the original prints, and the GEM does a great job of smoothing the very grainy APS film. Because the original APS prints have the date/time each photo was taken printed on the back, I use free Exifer software to apply date/time EXIF information to each jpeg file.

2 out of 5 stars mine jammed too.......2007-04-14

It jammed after about 40 rolls, so I sent it back for a warranty repair and to extract the film cartridge. When it came back it jammed again on the first roll. I sent it again and now it's working (12 rolls and counting...).

That said, when it works it works well, and I did some research and couldn't find a better way scan all my old film. So be prepared for some frustration if you decide to use this adapter.

2 out of 5 stars It broke down after a few rolls.......2006-02-19

It started reporting error messages that the film cannot be loaded after a few rolls. The Cool Scan V scanner is of course very nice and still continue to work with the slide and 35mm adapters. The successful APX scans were very nice. I was disappointed to see it break down only after a few (about 20) rolls going through it. The latest is that one of my APX roll is stuck in it and it won't even eject it. I am planning to send it to Nikon with the roll in it and see what happens. Since it has only been a month, it is still under warranty.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality WILL NOT LAST!!!.......2005-09-12

This item was such a HUGE disappointment. Initially, it worked well. BUT the more it was used (we are only talking 50 rolls or so) the more it started to deteriorate. First came the noises. Then the grinding. Then the failures to load film. Forget trying to load the rolls of 40 pictures, it would bring this thing to a grinding halt in many cases. This thing was only built to scan maybe 25-50 rolls tops. Read the reviews on other websites. Others have had the same thing happen. Inevitable failure. AND this is my SECOND one, both with the same result. For Nikon to release such a poorly constructed product is surprising. Especially since the scanner (I have the Coolscan V) it goes in is actually a well built and excellent product.

Bottom line...WAY too much money for a hunk of plastic with such poor construction. It will do the job if it is a small one (25-to 50 rolls, keep the number of rolls of 40 pictures to a minimum!). Be prepared to use that warranty and send it back to Nikon at least once or twice. And wear a headset, becuase that grinding squeaking noise as it rolls your film out is unbearable!

4 out of 5 stars APS adapter works great with Coolscan V.......2005-04-28

After researching the best way to scan APS film, I purchased a Coolscan V scanner from Amazon and this IA-20(S) adapter from Adorama thru the Amazon site. I never really found any reviews concerning scanning APS film, so I stuck with the scanner that had the best reviews and bought the APS adapter to go with it.

I found that these units were bid up on auction sites to within fifty dollars of the price of a new unit. My plan is to scan all of my film, then sell the scanner and adapter.

The film scans are beautiful! Much better than scans of the prints and much quicker and simpler. The software has many nice tools, especially Digital Ice, which eliminates all dust and spots with no apparent effect on the scan quality.

This is an excellent way to scan APS films, which are much easier to scan than 35mm strips. You just put the roll in the adapter. You click one button in the Nikon Scan software and it displays all 25 or 40 thumbnails in a minute or two. Since I had around 100 APS rolls to scan, I set up the defaults so that it would automatically have the normal parameters set when I scanned APS films. Then I just had to rotate the images to the correct orientation, select all of the thumbnails and hit the scan button in the software. It asks about the file name structure and the folder they will go into, and presents a few other options, then it spends about an hour to scan a roll of 25. I go do something else during that time. I haven't had any computer crashes during scanning, even while browsing or running other software on my computer (a low-end 2004 Sony VAIO desktop) simultaneously.

You can preview all of the frames and adjust all of the scan parameters for each individual shot before the final scan. I found this to only be useful on films with mostly dark shots. It takes about 15-20 minutes to preview a roll of 25. It is time-consuming to correct each shot. If there are only a few dark shots on a roll, then I preview and fix the ones I am sure will need additional software cleanup. Then I scan the whole roll. After scanning, I reopen the files, perform auto contrast on most shots, make any other adjustments, then resave them. Very efficient.

The adapter worked flawlessly for me for about 3 weeks, scanning about 55 APS films, mostly with 25 exposures but a few were 40-exposure rolls. While scanning the last 10 of those films a squeaking noise developed and worsened, but I ignored it because the scans did not have problems. Finally the adapter choked on a 40-exposure roll. The motor made a high pitched whining noise, like some gears had stripped or something. I did manage to open the door and get the roll out...That roll had a couple creases in it (but I later managed to scan it.) I returned the adapter to Nikon for warranty service. They returned it a couple weeks later. I completed scanning my remaining 45 rolls without incident. Because I'm not sure about the expected lifetime, I wouldn't advise buying a used adapter.

Overall my experience with the scanner and the APS adapter was good, but there are a couple things they should add:
        1. A reader for the APS film's embedded magnetic strip. Inclusion of the date as data was one of the advantages of APS film. This data could be used to adjust the file date or included as part of the filename. This would make sorting easier.
        2. A "Select All" button for easier selection of a whole roll.

I gave the APS adapter only 4 stars due to its mechanical failure after only 55 rolls. Nikon Coolscan V is an excellent scanning system for APS film as well as 35mm.

        Product Description

The PrimeFilm 3650u is a value-priced film scanner with high optical resolution and Digital ICE3.This film scanner is a high resolution upgrade to the company's basic model, and is designed for the hobbyist or photography enthusiast who is looking for image enhancement features and easy handling of large image files. The inclusion of Digital ICE3 by ASF (Kodak Austin Development Center) allows the user to digitally clean, correct and restore film images to optimize the image quality. The PF3650u operates at 3600dpi optical resolution, which produces a digital image of approximately 17.9 million pixels (3, 456 X 5, 184). An LED light source is used, versus a CCFL (cold cathode florescent light) to assure consistent and exact color conformity in scans. With a 3.2 dynamic range, 48-bit color capability and 3600 X 3600 dpi optical resolution, the PF3650u is capable of producing a high quality scanned image of up to 10" x 14". The unit, which is lightweight (2.2 pounds) and measures just 2 3/4 X 6 5/8 X 11 inches, connects via the USB port to any Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Power Mac G3 or later system. The PF3650u is equipped with a USB 2.0 interface and back-end support for USB 1.1, the system used for both PC and Macintosh. The USB 2.0 interface allows data transfer as fast as 480MB per second, which is comparable to transfer speeds using an IEEE1394 interface.

1 out of 5 stars I think it goes bad just sitting there.......2007-10-10

I've had two of these. The first one failed after about ten scans. I returned it. The second one failed about as fast, however, since I had not used it much and it was outside the warranty the only option was a factory repair (too expensive compared to just buying a new one) or to buy a replacement part based on the factory diagnosis of the problem for about $40 and fix it myself. Based upon my experience with the quality of the parts in these scanners, this did not seem to be a good alternative as the part could not be returned and was without any guarantees at all. Based on my limited experience, it appears to me that the scanner fails if it just sits unused for a period of time.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality images -- unacceptable.......2007-09-12

I bought this with the intend to digitizing a large collection of slides and negatives. After struggling with the scanner for most of a day, I gave up on getting decent images. The product ads and literature say 3600 dpi, and one can set 3600 dpi, but the scans (as read by Photoshop) never exceeded 1800 dpi, and a very poor 1800 dpi at that. All images were noisy with very little dynamic range and extremely poor color balance. Even Photoshop, which has been able to greatly improve scans from an inexpensive Canon sheet scanner, could not resurrect the terrible images produced by this scanner. The best scans were not even close to the inexpensive prints produced by a bulk print producer. The slide scans were much worse than the view of the slides held up to the light, let alone projected by a Kodak Carosel. It is possible that I received a defective unit (I can't imagine that anyone would find the results acceptable), but after many hours struggling with marginal software and poor results, I decided to return the unit instead of trying another one from the same manufacturer.
