For bulky items, HP designed a lid that allows clean scans from a sleek scanner--with the lid in its normal position, the scanner measures just 4 inches tall. The scan bed is large enough to process standard 8" x 12" photos.

The 4890 has four front-panel buttons that give you one-touch access to copies or scanning directly to specific formats. Enlargement/reduction is available onscreen in a range of 10 to 2,000 percent in increments of one percent.

Compatible with both Macintosh and Windows operating systems, HP software includes features designed to improve yesterday's photos along with slides from your childhood--dust and scratch removal, color restore, brightening dark areas of a shot and red eye removal are all included. A hi-speed USB connection (cable included) is compatible with USB 2.0 ports and offers exceptionally fast data transfer--about 26 seconds for a single 4" x 6" photo and about 28 seconds for a text document to Word. HP includes a one-year warranty covering parts and labor and provides free telephone support.

Get Something Else.......2007-12-06

I've had mine for about one year. Slide scanning: Unacceptable. B&W negative scanning: Unacceptable. Color neg scanning: passable. Print scanning: Excellent. Removing the glass for cleaning the underside: Nearly impossible. Software for Mac: Unacceptable. Scanning at high resolution: Unacceptable and not recommended by HP. Scanning documents as text: Unacceptable - you'll have to scan it as an image file.
If your medium goes into a TMA, the results will be inferior. I bought it specifically for slide scanning, and it is worthless for that.

Excelent machine........2007-08-01

The product was advertised as new and it is. Other than a slight cosmetic dent in the cover which is hardly noticible, this machine is what we were looking for. Old odd sized negatives come out as good as original prints. Delivered as promised. We couldn't be more satisfied.

exceeded expectations.......2007-05-28

I just purchased this scanner, and we had some operator foopaws, because being typical man, my husband was trying to just do it! with his previous scanner and electronic experience. He did work for HP as a tech. We got excellent detail on 14+ year old negatives. Our very old photo's came out crystal clear and detail was perfect. I wanted to use it for restoration and art. Just in the beginning testing it has met and exceeded all I wanted. To others users accept some responsibility in operator error!!!

It works great so why stop making it?.......2007-04-06

I have had 2 Epson and 3 HP scanners in the past. This is by far the best. I had a lot of old photos from early 1900's to computerize. It did great. It also did great with the slides and negatives. I highly recommend this. I can't wait to get started on the family documents. If they convert as easily as the photos, I will be extremely pleased. So the question is "Why did HP discontinue making something that works so well?

A versatle multi-purpose scanner that comes with easy to load and use software. It is large and heavy, but I have the desk space to place it. I picked it primarilty for it's capability to convert multiple 35MM slides to digital format.
