I have had this scanner for a little over a year. It has never made good copies/scans from a negative. I often have to rescan things. The software has now completey failed and I have to use a microsoft product to get it to work, and most of the time the scanner will not come on. It is very tempremental. I often have to jiggle cords and unplug things and mess around for an hour just to scan something.

The primary problem I have encountered with this scanner is more software related rather than the scanning quality or something else hardware related.
I usually need to scan a considerable number of pages at once. The way this HP scanner software is made does not allow you to scan quickly even though the scanning speed is relatively fine. First of all you are unable to use Adobe Photoshop with this scanner effectively for scanning a lot of pages because every time you need to scan another page the "Scanjet" scanning software needs to be restarted over again, in addition to that the HP software does not store the settings from the previous scan so that every time you restart the software you need to set the settings again. All these procedures aggrandize the time needed to scan a multi-page document tremendously.
Besides, the so called "Share-to-Web Upload folder" is created on the desktop when the scanner software is installed. Unfortunately, it is impossible to delete this folder unless you uninstall the entire program itself.
I am extremely dissatisfied with the software related part of HP scanners. All the HP scanner models I have seen have this very same problem with the software I have described. Basically the software makes you do a lot of unnecessary tasks; you waste a lot of time.
Previously I had been using a scanner by Mustek, it was not that perfect in terms of image quality but the software was written very easy to use. It had all the features that the HP lacks.
Basically I would not recommend purchasing HP scanners if you need to scan multi-paged documents (either BW or color), however if you only need to scan a couple pages at a time this choice might be a good one.
Bad scanner.......2006-06-08
I got this unit about two months ago. As other users have indicated with their units, my scanner has begun making a shrieking sound which is quite unbearable. The unit never scanned very well, and now it barely scans at all. This HP product is very attractive and well priced, but what does that mean if a piece of hardware is poor? It took me a while to figure out that the scanner was making the shrieking sound. I thought my computer was dying. I've had many scanners and never encountered anything like this before. Reading reviews here and elsewere has actually confirmed my suspicions that this is some type of design defect. I used an Agfa SnapScan 1212u for almost 8 years without a problem. I "upgraded" because I wanted a faster (USB-2 as opposed to USB-1) scanner, and a unit that had slide and film transfer capabilites. This scanner was never much faster than my Agfa and the quality is on much, much lower. Terrible. I would advise anyone reading this to buy another product.
Pretty good scanner.......2006-03-22
I've had this scanner for a couple years now and I like it a lot. It was given to me as a present from a friend. There are many things that this scanner does right, but it doesn't do some stuff properly.
It does have a film slot to scan negatives in, but it doesn't scan them properly. Mine always come out looking too bright, and I try to adjust it in my program but it never works quite right. I wish this worked, but I can live without it.
Like I said before, I have had this scanner for a good amount of time and never had problems. I don't have any beef with the software that comes with it either. I always hear about scanners being picky and always breaking, but mine is just as good as when I first was given it!
hp 3970 with streaked colors.......2006-01-01
I must now joinin and give my 3970 a poor review. I was happy with this product until recently after not using it for months. The problem is when attempting to scan in color, I get a bright orange tone one one half of the image and a bright yellow tone on the the other half of the image. When in black and white mode, I get a black image on one half and a streaked black image on the right. Since I have two computers, I loaded the software on my second computer and connected the scanner. In this case, the problem did not go away. I contacted HP via the chat format and after 45 minutes trying this and that nothing worked. Now I have a two hundred dollar paper weight.

The Case of the Lost Lemon Line.......2005-04-26
My last HP scanner went berserk on me a while ago, throwing out a random yellow line when it felt like it, always being sure to position said yellow line directly on top of the item being scanned. It had a particular preference for faces - often targeting the left side, connecting the nostril and chin like an off-color line of drool. This of course didn't go down well when I was scanning some family photos for my boss, so she kindly got me a new one.
This scanner is a definite improvement on my previous model, the 3570, being a little smaller, cooler looking and with easier to use features. It allows me to scan a document and edit it electronically, send photos by e-mail, group photos in neat little thumbnail pictures, and even make a movie with music, which can be saved on a CD.
It has a built-in transparent materials adapter (TMA) that allows me to scan 35 mm slides or negative strips, and I also scanned transparencies with very high resolution.
As if that weren't enough, it also doubles as a color photocopier, using my printer, so I don't have to go bother the secretaries, especially during Administrative Professionals Week.
The Instant Share button helps me with the boss' family photo projects, as I can create an album of all the pictures for sharing on-line, and the Memories Disc Creator helps with my "award-winning" multimedia photo shows. I also made some really cool company stationery for my department.
This scanner, so far, is great for the office, especially if you're in the marketing or advertising fields, and useful for school projects and family photo sharing. I'm still waiting to see if that malicious yellow line is stalking me.
