4 out of 5 stars Good, too many things to install.......2007-12-18

The scanner itself is excellent, and having the power directly from the USB port is great, one cable less!!
On the minus side, Mac installation is not as straightforward as most hardware devices for a Mac (I mean, no installation at all!). Here, you have to install 5 software packages (yes, five), which is so an overkill for such a simple device.. Besides, the software has no integration with Mac software suites; it would be ideal just to use iPhoto to get scanned pictures..

4 out of 5 stars Good Product.......2007-12-08

I did not used it very often. The best thing is it is very compact, save a lot of space. Moreover, it only use USB port for power supply. One shortcoming is when you save the scanning pictures as Jpeg, it is a little slow. However, it is much faster to save as PDF files.

2 out of 5 stars N/A???.......2007-12-07

I was very excited to have purchased this scanner--it has been on my wishlist for many years now and I could finally afford it out of my own pocketbook ^_^ However, it turns out that this scanner is defective. I thought I was being technologically incompetent--I continued receiving the same error messages--but the Canon rep I spoke with today said it is a hardware problem and not a software or computer problem. And they are issuing me a new one under warranty (So I don't have to pay a cent). Right now it is Friday, and he said to expect it sometime around Monday. Warranty or not, the Canon customer service was AMAZING, and to be honest, I am not angry at all, albeit a bit disappointed that I couldn't use my scanner sooner. After all, sometimes these things do happen, right? So I plan to come home early as I can on Monday and try out my new scanner. And then I'll finally be able to write a review on its performance! So take this 2-star review lightly until then...

4 out of 5 stars Unique features with some minor flaws.......2008-01-02

I purchased this scanner for its ability to scan 16 slides at once. On the plus side, it does this as advertised. The color and scan quality are excellent and its ability to scan 16 slides at once unattended saved me the much higher cost of a dedicated scanner. On the downside, whereas my previous Canonscan was nearly silent, when this scanner moves internally it is both loud and I find the sound annoying. Rather than writing each slides file to disk as each slide scan completes, it waits until all are done, using a large amount of system memory. Also, even at moderate resolutions, 6-color 96-bit scans are slow taking about 3-5 minutes per slide. Much of this is the software, which for each slide starts at the top, scans the first 3 colors, back to the top, scan the next 3 colors, back to the top, start the next slide, etc., instead of perhaps moving from slide to slide. Finally, IMHO the documentation is poor, and it took me awhile to get everything operating in the manner I wanted. Still, for me it is unique in its capabilities and I'm happy I bought it, but it could have been so much better.

5 out of 5 stars HP Scanjet G4050.......2007-12-28

Scanner arrived quickly and has worked great since I plugged it in. I have used the feature that enables you to store images from slides and was impressed how clear the images were. I am using the scanner with iMac Tiger and it has worked well for me. I am extremely pleased with the product and the merchant service.

4 out of 5 stars HP Scanjet G4050 Photo Scanner (L1957A#B1H) (Purchased on 11/22/2007).......2007-12-25

WORKS GREAT! IT CAME WITH A CD FOR VISTA AND XP AND I INSTALLED VISTA WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING I CAN SAY IS THAT THE ADAPTERS DID NOT WORK AS THEY SHOULD ON MY EKTACHROME SLIDES AS THEY ARE 2.75 X 2.75 BUT WITH A LITTLE ADJUSTMENT TO THEM WAS ABLE TO SCAN 3 AT A TIME WITH REAL GOOD RESULTS. I DID CALL HP AND THEY TOLD ME THAT WOULD NOT WORK AT ALL SO I MADE THE SUGGESTION THAT THE ADAPTERS BE MODIFIED TO USE THESE OLD SLIDES. ALL IN ALL I AM VERY SATISFIED AND YOU COULD NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE $156.00, COMPLETE WITH SHIPPING.

3 out of 5 stars OK with some problems.......2007-12-18

On the plus side, the scans have excellent color reproduction and the images are sharp and crisp. On the negative side, at 200 dpi it tends to pick out every little flaw in photos; matte-finish photos have a large amount of "noise". Worst of all, my unit arrived with a foggy film on the underside of the scanner glass. HP has directions for cleaning the underside of the glass on their website and it was just a matter of wiping it down with a microfiber cloth, but one shouldn't have to take it apart and put it back together after just taking it out of the box for the first time.

1 out of 5 stars Useless.....For Now.......2007-12-17

I would love to review this product, but I am unable to. All I can say is that it's difficult reviewing a product that you are unable to use. Despite the product being advertised as compatible with a Mac operating system of 10.4 or better, my 10.5 operating system did not work with the scanner. HP informed me that a compatible driver would not be available until the beginning of the new year. So it sits and does nothing as I wait for the new driver to become available.

4 out of 5 stars Saving my slides.......2008-01-02

I was an avid photographer in the 70s and 80s and have accumulated numerous slides of my family. These slides are now starting to show signs of decay. Using the Nikon Cool Scan V has helped me to restore and retain the beauty of these slides. My only negative comment regarding this equipment is the slowness of the process. I can only scan one slide at a time and it takes roughly 45 seconds per slide. I am scanning them as TIF files and each slide is about 65 MB. The scanner does a great job of capturing all the details of the slides at this level of scanning.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing.......2007-11-29

Why spend $500 for a scanner that can only do one image at a time, when you can get an Epson or Canon flatbed that will do a dozen or more, in one pass? Well, because the Coolscan makes surprisingly high quality scans whereas the flatbeds (which were never intended to scan small pieces of film) do not.

In theory, you can get very high resolution files from a flatbed (and if you spend $20,000 on a Scitex, you'll see that flatbed scanners can, indeed make great 35mm scans). But the $300-700 dollar flatbed scanners do not have the optics or precision to get the best from a 1" x 1.5" piece of film. Worse, the quality varies across the bed, with the center usually giving the sharpest scan. These scanners can generate very large files but if the sharpness, detail and bit depth (shadow detail) aren't there, file size does not matter.

I wouldn't recomend the big Coolscan unless you are very serious because you can get pretty good scans of medium format film from almost any scanner that has a light in the lid. But with 35mm the Coolscan rules.

There are two drawbacks, however. While the Coolscan isn't terribly slow, scanning one slide or neg at a time, is. The more expensive model, with the slide feeder may or may not be worth it to you. The other drawback is the NikonScan software which has a unique property--it does not work reliably on a PC and it doesn't work on a Mac, either. True, cross-platform non-functionality! Here, the solution is to use VueScan which can be downloaded for $39 and is trouble-free.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Scan quality, Not very good speed.......2007-11-22

Bought the scanner to scan a collection of thousands of pictures that my dad has taken over the years. I started scanning some recent pictures without any processing and noticed immediately how many scratches were on the pictures. You can't really notice them by looking at the negatives. Enabled ICE, and it took care of the scratches. If you looked hard enough, you could barely see where the scratches were, but the overall results turned out great.
I found that using GEM and ROC in addition to ICE really enhanced the pictures. I scanned some negatives from the 80's, and without any processing, the colors were faded. When I enabled these features, it brought real life to the pictures. Keep in mind that it's trying to restore the original color of the pics, so it may not always be perfect. Under the highest resolution, which I use, some pictures look as if they were taken with some of the high-megapixel cameras of today. My dad used a canon eos camera since the 80's.
The biggest drawback of the scanner for me is the speed. It takes approx 4 minutes per frame, or 12 minutes for 4 frames with ICE, ROc, and GEM... not much less if you use ICE only. This does depend on how fast your computer is. Whenever I was scanning, the processor was being used heavily utilized with a 3500+ amd processor. So don't attempt with a slow computer! Another drawback is when pictures are scanned, there are white and black borders around the pictures which the software does not remove. I hope there is a tool out there that could take care of this. One last fuss I have about the camera is the batch scanning. I wish the software could let you scan strip after strip without having to click and adjust settings everytime.
In the end, if you have patience and determination, you can get very good looking pictures!

5 out of 5 stars Can't Believe I'm Back In The Sixties At Last.......2007-11-22

My scanner arrived on 10/25/07 about noon. Hardware/software installation went very smoothly. I have a three year old DELL Dimension 8400 series computer with a Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system. I would guess I was up and running in about two or three hours, ready to scan my first images. Over the next two or three days I experimented with the scanner controls on my inital slides which I used as a learning tool. I had selected this scanner based on reviews and Q&A available on the internet and at this point I am very satisfied with the quality of the product. I bought it to scan something on the order of 1500 35mm slides and 600 126-film slides all of which date back to the 1960s and the early 1970s. At this point I have scanned about 375 slides -- mostly 35mm slides. For my purposes which are family slide shows and selected prints for a family album, I get very good results for about 85% of the slides using only the Digital ICE and ROC controls. The Digital DEE control has proven very effective for the few slides that have detail of interest in the under exposed areas of the image. For the remaining slides, I've learned to use the Curves control and the Color Balance (Brightness/Contrast)controls to improve images that were originally underexposed. I had initially been using Photobase 4.5 for brightness/contrast control for those slides.
I feel at this stage of my project I am still in the learning phase of the art and science of film slide scanning using the Nikon CoolScan V. I probably haven't read everything -- although I did try more than once -- in the Nikon print manual and electronic documentation about what a control does and why and how you might want to use it to improve on a given slide. In general I would say that their documentation is sufficient to get you started. But sometimes you need -- or at least want -- more than just a start. On a few slides I've tried to use the Manual Focus Adjustment to improve on the focus. The documentation on Manual Focus that I could find is very primitive. There is a Manual Focus Adjustment (Position) numeric slider control whose units are not identified. Further documentation in this area would be very helpful to me.
Over all, I am very satisfied with this product and can recommend it to others with a similar need.

4 out of 5 stars Good Scanner, but Hard Install.......2007-10-27

Great scanner after you get past the install. After many hours of trying too install, I had to call tech. support. Afteer several days of trying things finally got the scanner working and now does great scans. Nikon needs to improve on their install program. Still I love the scanner.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It works well; easy to understand.......2007-12-27

I bought this scanner specifically to scan MANY old slides. It was easy to install and operate - touch of a button. I like the button to make anything a PDF. The only issue that I had was that it scans only 5 slides per setting and I still had to move the cursor box to properly shape the slides. I also had a crop after scanning. It was time consuming because I had so many. Otherwise, a great scanner.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value.......2007-11-14

As of this review I have used this product for difficult color scans and it performed as expected. Great color and extremely sharp reproduction. HP has my vote on this impressive scanner.

5 out of 5 stars Photo Scanner.......2007-11-09

The product has exceeded my expectations. I had shopped locally for purchase, however, I found the Amazon.com price to be far better than a local purchase. I should have saved the gas money and started my shopping on line. In addition I did not have to pay shipping or taxes. I'll be back.........

3 out of 5 stars Initial experience was not good........2007-10-20

I ordered the scanner and planned to use it on an older computer with Windows 2000 SP4. It arrived promptly; unfortunately it was defective (made a clacking noise and the scanning light wouldn't move). Sent it back after a phone call and several emails back and forth to Amazon. Amazon sent a link to a web address that was supposed to show a return address label to print, but due to "technical errors" it only contained a label to put in the return box. Replacement scanner arrived, but software had been updated and wouldn't install correctly on Windows 2000 SP4 (HP sofware said no scanner was found, though Windows 2000 had no problem finding it). Installed the software on a newer computer with Windows XP, and was finally able to scan some slides and prints. Amazon credited my account for the cost to return the defective scanner.

4 out of 5 stars Read And Think About The Reviews.......2007-10-13

I was leery about purchasing this item after reading the reviews because I needed this to run on a Windows Vista operating system. But I checked the HP web site and saw that there were Vista drivers available. When I got the scanner, I downloaded the drivers and then followed the install directions using the downloaded drivers instead of those on the disk. The scanner works great. I haven't used the full potential of the device but it's been great to simply scan an item for saving, scan and create a pdf document and to scan and print.

4 out of 5 stars It's The best But could be better.......2007-12-26

I have scanned over 30000 slide with my scanner with not to many problems one problem is that you get is over scan on lite colors white over black as an example as a bulk slide scanner goes it's the best one.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great, either.......2007-06-18

I've owned this scanner for about 18 months now, and also have the slide and roll feeders. I've scanned about 12,000 images during that time, both slides and negatives.

The good news is, that for well-exposed negatives or slides, this scanner is fast and does a very high quality job. The bad news is that the software is buggy, and Nikon's tech support is non-existent. There are still no 64-bit drivers.

I'm running XP-Pro on an AMD x2 4600+ ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe with 2 GB memory and around a TB of SATA disk. While scanning, one of the two CPUs is totally consumed, but this is probably because of the polled USB driver. There are 3 software errors that keep occurring. First is the well-known Nikon Scan has encountered an error and must close - sorry for trashing your data. This malfunction occurs about every 10-40 frames. It simply requires a restart of the application. It usually happens just after or during a preview setup, so the work loss is minimal, but annoying. Nikon support ignores all reports to their support site of this particular problem.

The second problem is that the scanner software simply freezes. This usually happens in multiscan mode. To recover from this requires that the scanner be power cycled and the software needs to be killed with the task manager. Nikon support has also ignored this bug report.

The third problem is that when a slide jams in the feeder, the application loses communication with the scanner and must be restarted. Not too bad, since I had to manually clear the jam, but really an indication of the poor quality of the software error handling.

The software is incomplete with the slide scanner, in that it doesn't allow a preview scan for each slide like it does for the roll/strip feeder. That is basically a software issue, although the sloppy handling and positioning of the $500 slide feeder is also in play, in that it is probably impossible to get a complete alignment of the second feed with the first. (It actually misses a bit with the strip feeder as well, although not enough to matter.

The slide feeder is a bit of a kludge. It will require some modification to get it to work reliably enough to walk away from, but after a bit of tinkering, cutting and installing a modified pressure plate, it now can feed slides that are in good condition well enough that it seldom jams.

Another problem I have is with the hardware specification - it claims a Dmax of 4.8, which is just the specification of the 16-bit A/D converter attached to the sensor. But the sensor has nowhere near that much dynamic range, so the specification is downright misleading. Because of that, this scanner continues the history of scanners having great difficulty with dense slides. While Dee helps some, the problem of the limited dynamic range of the sensor becomes readily apparent. The amount of smear across high contrast boundaries is intolerable when scanning some very nice Velvia or even Provia images. If you shoot slides for scanning, consider over-exposing by 1/2 stop or so if the subject can tolerate that.

As mentioned earlier, the multi-scan setting does not seem to work very well, due to the software crashing.

Scan image Enhancement is a totally useless piece of software. The ICE works well for dust removal, but may give some image deterioration on some Kodachromes, although most work out okay. ROC works quite well for faded images, such as pre-85 Ektachromes and older negatives. Occasional Kodachromes are also restored. But there doesn't seem to be any difference between the setting from 1-4 that I have been able to detect. And you'll get bizarre results if ROC is one and the n\image hasn't faded.
GEM is okay for grain reduction, but like most such programs it loses detail fast, so us it sparingly. Faster negatives need it, and some of the older or faster slides films also, but if you can get away without it, then don't turn it on.

Negative scanning is very good, with the colors either well-balanced or easy to correct (Reala, for example, needs some manual setting to get right). But the negatives are grainy compared to slides. So you either get dynamic range problems or grain problems. Pick your favorite imperfection. I find negatives a breeze to scan, but the ultimate quality is not quite as good as a good slide scan, provided the slide is not too dense.

So Nikon gets only three stars for this. The idea is good, but the lack of dynamic range and software problems, coupled with Nikon tech support's utter incompetence or non responsiveness turn this into a mediocre product. Unfortunately, there is nothing much better at a reasonable price. Drum or pseudo-drum scanners may be better (I wouldn't count on it, though), but I don't have 10k to invest.

You'll get as good an image quality from a comparably priced 10MP digital SLR, so unless you have a lot of old stuff to scan, this is not the way to enter the digital age at this point in time. D80, D200 and comparable Canon or Fuji DSLRs give images subjectively as good or better than the scanned images from this scanner and slide film.

5 out of 5 stars Great Scanner.......2007-06-02

I have used several other film/slide scanners in the past, the 5000ED really performs. I really like the multi-scan functions for higher signal to noise and 8 or 16 bit files. I highly recommend this scanner for archiving slides and film and for get a good digital image to work with if Photoshop. I have no problems producing 16x20 prints from scanned image. Quality in and Quality out. Quick scans for such high resolution with very consistent work flow. I will be doing a more in-depth review at [...] in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Defective Products out of the Box and Cost of Ownership.......2007-05-09

One star is not for how Nikon products perform once they work properly, it is a measure of the lack of product defects (quality) and the extra costs incurred by the customer to get Nikon scanner products to work properly.

I purchased a CoolScan-IV. When I received it, it was defective out of the box. I contacted Nikon technical support and they told me to exchange it for a new scanner. The new 12-Bit CoolScan-IV worked perfectly. When I was ready to upgrade to 16-Bits, I purchased a CoolScan-5000 and gave my CoolScan-IV away. What a mistake!

This "upgrade" scanner was a total piece of junk. The images were noisy. I immediately contacted Nikon technical support about the problem. After some back and forth, they told me there was nothing wrong with the scanner; I was the problem. I recently found an archive copy of an under-scanned photo that I scanned on the old CoolScan-IV. I compared the images. The CoolScan-IV produced a very good image. The CoolScan-5000 was horrible. Without spending hundreds of dollars to pay Nikon Service to correct Nikon's initial quality defects, I am stuck with a piece of junk.

NikonScan. NikonScan is the scanning software that comes with the Nikon scanners. When it works, NikonScan works acceptably; however, it locks up repeatedly requiring closing the program and reopening it. Earlier versions worked much better in this regard to locking up.

Bottom line, Nikon quality has deteriorated to become very poor. I just described four Nikon product quality problems (initially defective products). There is a fifth: Nikon does not stand behind errors that their technical service personnel make.

Each item described above had additional out of pocket cost or lost time associated with it. I know the scanners can perform exceptionally well once they are working to spec. I would recommend a Nikon scanner only if you are willing to unnecessarily pay out a lot of extra money and waste a lot of time correcting initial Nikon product quality defects and incompetent technical service advice.

4 out of 5 stars Nikon CoolScan 5000 ED.......2007-05-07

I'm switching from a Polaroid SprintScan 4000 to this Nikon unit because of what I'd heard about the imaging quality of the latter. So far, I'm impressed, especially with the in-system dust and scratch remover with the color images. I do do a lot of b & w scanning and printing, so, in that realm, there's no great difference except that the manual handling of b & w film strips is a bit tricky (with the Nikon). All and all, I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty pleased.......2007-11-29

I have to admit, I didn't care for the Brother printer at first. But it has definitely grown on me. Glad I gave it chance! It does a very good job of printing, and I'm very pleased with the scan capability. So far it's been a very dependable printer. I had assumed it would come with "sample" print cartridges, but was pleasantly surprised to find they were "full-sized" cartridges.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad for the Price.......2007-10-30

I got this printer for my girlfriend who mainly uses it for her grad school assignments so nothing fancy. It's easy to use, and the quality is pretty good. One shortcoming would be the photo prints, we tried to print a photo with the photo paper which came with the printer but it kept getting jammed...does anyone have a hint to share?

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased! .......2007-10-09

Overall this is a great all in one printer. Good size/design. Not many of these type of printers have the hidden tray/bin for paper. Some printers the paper sticks out on the top. The HP C3180 doesnt have a place for paper storage, everytime you print need to fold down front flap and add paper. This design is really clean. Impressed with the printing/scanning quality as well. Wont top laser but does the job. Good deal, sign up for the credit card to get $30 off. Cant go wrong with this printer...period!!!

Only thing I wished is that there was a photo printing software. There arent much option when printing photos. I printed a 4x6 and wasnt able to adjust the positioning. It does print the photo well but could be annoying when some parts get cut off. This is just a minor issue. But then, who really prints photos???

I give this printer an A+. Printer is good to go, quite and built in card reader.

5 out of 5 stars works great!.......2007-09-20

After looking at the reviews, here, I decided to get this printer, and after a month it still works really well. Good prints, and relatively fast. It took a couple times of running the programming disk through, due more to my lack of expertise, I suspect. A good buy!

This is great compact multi-function device for the price. However I would recommend you purchase the product somewhere else rather than paying more than $50 in shipping for a 20# box.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HP Scanjet 5590 is an Excellent Buy.......2007-12-28

The Scanner arrived within a few days of ordering with the plate glass broken. The return was so easy and Amazon was so accommodating - I received a new one within a couple days. The scanner is great for my small business use. Quality of documents and photos - and even slides - is excellent. The scanned images are easy to work with, edit and move around. Well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Works Great.......2007-11-09

I saw some bad reviews for this product but I have had no problems with it. It works great and was easy to set up. It is a little noisy, but for the price it was definitly worth it.

3 out of 5 stars HP Scanner Decent Product.......2007-10-23

The HP Scanjet 5590 has performed pretty much as described. It was an excellent value, providing lots of features, such as transparency/negative scanning and document feeder, usually found in much pricier units. The user interface could be much better, especially when stacked up against other HP products...and the transformation for negative scanning is needlessly cumbersome. But on the whole it is a solid product, and if you're running Vista 64-bit, it's absolutely the best buy to be had.

1 out of 5 stars If you buy this product you're a damn fool.......2007-08-16

I am sure if you have read all of the reviews up to this point then you understand that this product is a complete and utter piece of crap. That being said, I am going to post a review anyway due to the fact that this scanner is NOT a 2 1/2 star piece of machinery, the average rating is way too inflated and I figure another 1 star review will help balance things in the right direction.

I have experienced all of the same problems that have already been listed, most notabley:

1. random jams
2. the scanner randomly stops scanning a page for no apparent reason in the middle of the scan
3. lamp light errors

I try to use this device at work and sometimes I will put a stack of documents in only to watch the same stack jam on the 2nd or 3rd page 20 X in a row. On the rare occassion that the moon, the sun, and the stars are all alligned the scanner might get through a few pages, but it will inevitabley jam...someone mentioned a 60% success rate, that number is WAY too high, I have experienced well under a 20% success rate and that is being generous...the real number is closer to 5%.

TOTAL AND UTTER PIECE OF CRAP.

5 out of 5 stars Great scanner!!.......2007-07-12

I bought my 5590 3 weeks ago. Since then, I have scanned over 5,000 pages, half of which were double-sided, and about 10% have been scanned in colour. Most are A4 in size, but there have been some mixed size batches of pages. Almost all the output has been to searchable PDF files, with the rest to jpg picture files. The quality of all scans has been excellent. I have had about 10 jams in that time, but most of those were my fault - left a few staples in! I have nothing but praise for this scanner. The setup on my XP computer was simple and worked first time. The interface is great. The OCR program that is supplied with the package - Readiris V8 (not the latest version) - works superbly to produce the searchable PDF files for Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is fast enough for me - my timeline is not critical. It is not intrusively noisy. So it has all been good for me.
